I kissed his cheek. "It's okay." I returned my attention to my family. They seemed to be talking about me and Kai, but mostly me. "What are we going to do?" my step-mom asked. "I don't know, but she's my daughter. I have to protect her." replied my father. My step-mom frowned at this. "I know how much she means to you, but I have my children to worry about." "Our children," my father corrected. "Melina is my daughter, and I will not abondon her." He gazed up at the ceiling, as if he could see Mount Olympus. "Her mother wouldn't want that."

I thought about what they were saying.It made me think of my mother.I missed her so much.Everything made me think of mom lately.

I reached for Kai's hand, almost knowing that he was thinking about his mother. I kept my eyes on the room my family was in, but I kept my hand in Kai's, just so he knew I was there for him. My step-mom was furious at my father's last comment. I could tell by the look on her face, but she didn't show it. "Oh, her," she said distastefully. My father returned his attention to my step-mom. "Athena is good mother to Melina, and I respect her for that. Like it or not, but I knew Athena before you, and she'll always be my daughter's true mother," my dad retorted.

I swore.How dare she disrespect AThena?She may have not been my mother,but I had a lot of respect for her.Athena had most of my respect.

I turned to Kai. "It's alright," I nodded, then looked back at my dad and step-mom. My siblings sat there silent, as if this was just the beginning of the real matter. They were right. "Whatever you say, Eric," she replied. "But I will not have my children be put in danger because of Melina. If I were you, and if you really did care about our children, then I'd do so. Most demigods have died in battle, or some other accident anyway. Even in Ancient Greece." At this point, my father was fuming. "She's my daughter, I won't betray her."

She was so predjudiced! I nearly blurted it out.But thankfully stopped myself.She made me furious.She was almost as bad as Noah's stepmom.

I sqweased Kai's hand. My dad would never kill me, never! I thought. He scratched the stubles of hair on his chin. He was deep in thought, as if pondering on whether to give into my step-mother, or stand by me and Athena.

I sqweased his hand tighter. I was trying to be as courageuos as I could, but I was a little nervous. What if my dad did decide to give in to my step-mom? I began to feel a little guilty. My step-mom was right, I could be the cause of her children's death. My gut clenched, I couldn't bare to hear this anymore. "Let's go," I wispered. In all his rage, my father stomped out of the room. I pulled Kai and scampered away, but it was too late. "I know you're there. Kai, Melina, come join us."

I walked into the room, balling my fists. I couldn't be afraid of her, I just couldn't. But those big, cold, brown eyes made me want to crawl under a rock. "Step-mother," I stammered. "Children, please leave the room. I must speak with Melina and Kai privately." she said. With that, Sadie, Harper, Aaron, and Nathaniel exited the room.

"You were eves-dropping on an important conversation," she reported. "Why is it that you have done such a thing, Melina? You could have at least gave everyone a chance, and got to know them better." Why were things always so complicated? I thought.

"Yeah..." I said halfheartedly. Mom, please help me. Please! I've never been this scared in my life. It was worse than that time the furies ambushed me and my father. "You little rodent!" she excalaimed. "If you speak like that again I'd so much have you dead!"

"Even demigods have an end," my step-mom retorted. "You may have the same capabilities as your divine parent, but you are still vulnerable to death. Even an idiot would know that. Think about heroes from the past. Heracules, Achillies, the list goes on. And from the looks of it, it still does even to this day." I was about to say something, but nothing came out. The fact is, she's right. Many demigods have died because of the war with Cronus, and there is going to be more in the next battle.

"How... D- Do you know this?" I studdered. I looked at her in her cold, brown eyes. It was frightning, but why was I afraid of her? A mere mortal. She was not a monster, an enemy demigod, nothing. She was the just a mortal that could see through the veil of the mist.

I stepped in front of Kai; placing my hand on the blade of his sword. "Kai," I began, "No." I looked at him in his blue eyes. I was thankful that he cared, and was even willing to blast my step-mom to pieces for even threatning to kill me. But I couldn't let him do that. No matter how much I hated her, she was still my step-mom, so she isfamily. "Our weapons are unable to slaughter mortals," I wispered. "They are like that for a reason."

"Thank you," I said. I returned my attention to my step-mother. I had to gain some courage, just like Kai did. Why was I so afraid? I've taken down furies, harpies, empusas, hellhounds, just about anything. And here I was, cowering at the face of a mortal. Something looked off about her. It just didn't feel right. The way she stared at us was just unnatural. Something was going on, and I was going to find out.

This lady seemed familiar.I couldn't put my finger on it.I'd seen her somewhere before.Where was it?

She wasn't a monster, I knew that for sure. My dad would never marry anything like that. Her expression just didn't seem right to me. She had something planned for us. I was beginning to feel sorry for my half-siblings. Were they treating Kai and I like this out of fear of their own mother? I was unsure, but thoughts rummaged through my head. "We'll be in my room."

"We'll figure it out," I nodded. "I think she's up to something, but I have no idea what." I recited the entire conversation my dad and she had. She said she wanted to protect her children, and the only way to do that was to have me executed. What if that wasn't the reason? What if there was another purpose?
