"I mean you can do anything to just frighten people," I said. "I'm sure that you can't make them talk because they are just shadows. But maybe someone else could do the talking. That would be so cool, and a great way to scare people."

"I-I guess. But, they couldn't see the shadow talking. Shadows are j-just the outline of a person filled in. You can't see their m-mouths. When I was l-little I tried to make my shadow talk. T-that was before I knew who I-I was." Inside, I had a mini heart attack. I had sworn to myself about back stories and not to say them or even remember them.

I smiled lightly. "When I was younger, if I ever got really embrassed or angry, my skin would turn ice cold. It would be so cold that if you touched me, you would burn yourself. It still happens now, but my father had always pointed it out to me as if I was a freak." I shrugged. "I guess he was right in a way."

"W-well I suppose were all 'freaks' a-at camp half-blood."I said."But, it's n-nothing to be ashamed of. I-I grew up on a farm. The o-only friend I h-had was Gunther." I rememberd the day when Gunther and I were attacked. It wasn't the best of my memories.

"Who's Gunther?" I asked out of curiousity. I looked at Kat. She still looked uncomfortable. I wondered what was bothering her. Maybe she was just that shy but something told me otherwise.

"H-he's just a friend. A-a friend. Nothing more." I didn't want Alaska to think that Gunter and I were...dating? No way. He was just my closest friend that happend to be a boy. There was nothing weird about that.

I smiled. "Don't worry. I understand that totally." I assured her. "I have dozens of guy friends." My thoughts drifted to Conor...was he more then that? I shook that thought away. I have a lot of guys friends. "That aren't boyfriends."

I nodded, understanding. I hated it when people would alwase tease me and Gunther about kissing and whatnot. I looked at Alaska, who was faced the other way. Something was bothering her. I was about to ask if she was ok-but something held me back.

The snow that had fallen around me was now melted. It left a couple small puddles and some dropless where swerving down the raggety rock. I didn't know what to say next. I had just met Kat, and it was always hard for me to keep a conversation going with someone I just met.

I glansed away from Alaska and thought. She seemed trustworthy enough. We could even be friends...it was just I was terrible at making conversation. I glansed back at her. She hadn't said anything yet and neither had I. It was several moment's of ackword silence. "So, w-were did you grow up?" It felt wierd making up conversation, but...I felt like I had to do it too.

"New York City," I tell Kat. "That's where my dad met my mom and he kind of just stayed there. He was a drug addict so he was never home. I learned to do everything by myself. That was when I was eleven. I'm a year rounder here now and I don't mind it one bit. How about you? Where did you used to live?"

"I-I grew up on a small farm in Wisconson. My...my mother re-married but she was never able to have another child. I only h-had one friend, Gunther. About a week ago Gunther and I were attacked by emposi. A satyr came and told my mother that he would take me to Camp Half-Blood." I almost gave away my biggest secret. Immediately, I went up to my necklass and began fiddling with it.

"I guess Gunther is still back in Wisconson?" I asked. She didn't really say he was a demigod, so I doubted he was. I couldn't think of anything else to say but that.

"Y-yea he's not like...us...I-I mean demigods." Gunther was my best friend. He would give my parents letters and then they would send them to me. "I-I don't know why but they, I-I mean my parents never gave Gunther my new adress, so they alwase send me his letters."

I felt a little selfish not telling Gunther that I left. He probobly thinks that I'm at some strange boarding school.

"I bet he understands completely." I said. "I mean, kind of. If he is your best friend, I'm sure he wont hold a grudge. Although, I really don't know the guy, so I can't really draw any conclusions."

"I-I guess." Gunther wasn't the kind of person to hold a grudge. "What a-about you? Did you have any mortal friends?" I wanted to stop talking about my life. I felt bad enough lying to Alaska about my parents.

She asked me about mortal friends and my thoughts wandered back to my old school. "Nope," I said darkly. "I came here four years ago, but even at eleven I was an outcast. I wasn't really an angel in school if I might add."

I smiled, witch was rare for me. "Me too, but Gunther was as well. Outcasts become friends I guess." Then, I realized that I hadn't studderd. I smiled again-extremly happy with myself.

I smiled when she did. She looks a whole lot happier now. "It's not really that uncommon," I said. "Most demigods aren't really on the popular side. Unless your mom is Aphrodite."

I lauged, wich was was another rare for me. I began to think, perhaps I could trust Alaska...could I even tell her the truth about my mother? "Yea" I say. "All they do is gossip, or so I've noticed."

I shook my head regretting that I even brought it up. "Nah," I said, "They aren't all like that. My best friend is from cabin ten. If you met her, you'd be like, 'Your mom is Aphrodite?' She get's that at least twice a day. She is still new, so it'll take her a while to get to know everyone and make sure they know, she is all her own in that cabin."

I looked at Kat. She was stuttering again. "Uh, yeah sure." I said. "Go ahead. I'm listening." I wasn't usually someone people opened up to, so I was a little surprised.
