New Camper (Open)

Subject: New Camper (Open) Thu Mar 22, 2012 12:21 am

Pender was running from well he didnt know what it was but it was definitely some kind of monster. He had never seen anything like it. He stopped to catch his breath behind a tree. Bad idea the monster was getting really close. Pender started climbing the tree. He got about 20 feet up and pulled out his bow and took aim at the monsters left eye. Wham! The arrow whistled through the air and got him right in the eye. Pender quickly fired another at his right eye but the monster turned and he got him right in the nose. Pender wasnt settling for that so he fired another. This time his aim was true. The monster fled and Pender climbed down. Not knowing where he was he wandered up the mountain and came across an arch that read "CAMP HALF-BlOOD" Pender walked under the arch and into the camp. "Hello? Can someone tell me where I am and what this place is?" he asked

"So I jus' go through there?" Edith turned around in the saddle searching for her escort but he was gone. Sighing in frustration she turned back around and adjusted her hat. "Wonderful." She murmured. With a slight nudge she urged Duke into a walk and passed beneath the sign. They hadn't gotten more then a few steps inside the boundary and someone was standing there.

"Hello?"

Pender turned around. "Oh hi there. Umm nice horse. Im Pender. Do you know where we are?"

Edith chuckled dryly and shook her head. It seemed she wasn't the only that had just arrived. After close consideration she swung down from the saddle so that she was on his level. Duke was 17 hands tall and could be a little intimidating. Taking the reins in her hand she walked around to him and gave Duke a pat.

"Howdy. I'm Edith and this here's Duke." She said her southern accent in evidence. She looked around and shrugged. "Far as I know we are at Camp Half Blood. Not 100 percent sure why or what exactly it is but there ya go."

"Camp Half What?" "I guess we should find someone who knows. Would you like some help with your horse?" he asked

Edith bit back the reply that came to her lips, not without some effort. They were both in a strange place and had no idea where here was or even why they were here. Not to mention that she hadn't had a good nights sleep in three days. To say that her temper was stretched thin would be an understatement.

"Good idea." She looked up in surprise at his suggestion of help. "No thanks. Duke is pretty touchy about new people and there nothin' to be done till I can git him to a stable." She cleared her throat. "So should we make our way down tha hill?"

"I guess so" Pender replied. He felt relieved when she declined his offer for help. He wasnt afraid of horses but this horse was huge! He followed her down the hill. "So Edith, as my first new friend why don't you tell me about yourself if you dont mind. Oh and how old are you?"

Slightly out of breath from her daily jog, Taylor glanced at the two newcomers. She bent down in exhaustion, hands on her knees as she just stared at them. She hadn't recognized them before, so Taylor figured they were new. And obviously they were demigods, since ordinary mortals can't really pass through the camp's magical boundaries. The two demigods seemed tired as well--Taylor wondered if they were chased by monsters on the way in. That was usually the case with newbies.

Taylor wiped her neck with her handy face towel and waited for the two to come down the hill. She wasn't exactly in the mood to go back up and meet them halfway, seeing that she was tired. Taylor straightened up and put on her best smile.

"Hey," Taylor yelled as soon as they were in earshot. "Welcome to camp."

Well wasn't that a loaded question. Picking her way down the hill she looked at her new companion. He seemed harmless enough. Tipping her hat back she thought about her answer.

"I'm 14 and came from Montana. My momma died given birth and I've been with my adopted daddy ever since. Three nights ago we were attacked and he was hurt bad." A lump threatened to choke her up but she refused to cry in front of a stranger. Swallowing it down she got a hold of herself and continued. "A centaur helped me git him to a hospital and from there he brought me here."

She wasn't going to mention the dreams and the strange man in them. Then her new friend would think she was nuts. "What 'bout you?"

At that moment a girl was waving at them from the bottom of the hill. Edith waved back as they approached her. "Heya."

Centaur? What is she talking about centaurs arent real. But then again the weird monsters that had been chasing him he didnt think were real either so he just acted like the centaur remark meant nothing. "Wow sounds like you have had a rough life. Oh look we found someone who might be able to help us already." Pender said. "Hello!" he shouted back down at her.

Taylor grinned at them. She caught some bits of their conversation but it was hard to focus on what they were talking about when she could hear her heart pounding in her ears. Guess she was that tired. Taylor waited until they got down, she was getting tired of shouting.

"I'm Taylor," she introduced herself as she observed the two of them. The girl on the horse looked rather calm while her friend looked a little confused. Taylor sighed to collect her breath before saying, "Yep, you're definitely new. So how much do you know about camp?"

Taylor was somehow used to welcoming newcomers, since during her daily jogs she usually greeted newbies and answered most of their questions before they get settled in. Her breathing was a little ragged at this point, but her smile said that she was still welcome to conversation even at her condition.

"Hi Im Pender. I know the name from the sign thats about it" Pender felt embarrassed that he knew so little about this new place. "What can you tell us about this place?" he asked

Taylor turned to Pender as she rubbed the back of her head. He sounded like the type of newcomer who was just told to come to camp without any reason why. Or he had probably run away and wound up in here. There were a lot of possibilities, but Taylor chose not to dwell on that. She was not too sure about the girl though--she looked like the kind of person who already had an inkling on what the place was. Taylor cleared her throat before speaking.

"It's a place for awesome kids. Hm, kids of gods and goddesses to be more specific," Taylor said, knowing that the boy would be more or less surprised to hear that. "Well, you know anything about Greek mythology? It would be a lot easier to explain that way."

"Well actually yeah, it really interests me but I didnt think any of it was real." Pender stated. "Ive been on my own for so long but I got to read lots of books all over the country."

Taylor nodded slowly in understanding. At least it would be easier for her to explain now, as opposed to explaining to kids that had no idea about mythology. Gods, she remembered doing that once, and it took her hours to explain everything to the kid. Taylor was glad that she didn't have to do it this time.

"Well, it's real," she said simply, tucking some of her stray hair behind her ear. "Camp Half-Blood is some sort of a safe haven for the half-bloods, demigods, or whatever you wanna call us kids of the gods. Like me, for instance. I am a daughter of Khione--the goddess of snow."

Taylor paused, her gaze shifting between the two of them. "You know your godly parent yet?" she asked, but she was almost sure that they didn't. But maybe they already got claimed, but didn't understand what it meant.

Pender was shocked or he would have been if it wasnt for all the monsters that had been chasing him. "Umm no. At least I dont anyway. I dont even know who my birth mom or dad is. Ive jumped around from foster home to foster home. Exactly a year ago today I turned 15 and ran away from my last home. Ive been on my own ever since running from monsters. The only thing thats kept me alive is my speed and my trusty bow here." Pender held up his bow for Taylor to see.

Taylor eyed the bow with interest. She began assuming who the boy's godly parent was just from his weapon, but she didn't dare voice it aloud. For one, she might be wrong, and that would be pretty embarrassing. And besides, it wasn't only Apollo kids who used the bow and arrow these days.

"I see," Taylor said, nodding slowly in understanding. "Is it made of celestial bronze? Or only mortal metals?" Taylor asked, forgetting that she was talking to people who didn't know much about this world yet.

"Actually I dont really know. I woke up one morning where i had camped in a tree and my bow was gone but hanging on a branch right in front of me was this magnificent weapon. I tried to find who it belonged to but couldnt so I kept it and its come in handy. As for this quiver its magic or idk something anyway I never run out of arrows but I dont know what they are made from" Pender said

Taylor looked slightly confused. Why would an obviously magical bow suddenly appear in front of a demigod? Taylor would assume that it would be a gift from your godly parent, but then the chances of that happening were really slim, especially if you haven't got claimed by your godly parent yet. She racked her thoughts, trying to remember if any of her friends had any contact with their immortal parents. Nope. Nada. Taylor hadn't even met her mother yet, and Taylor didn't think it would really happen. Gods just had a lot of things in their minds, not to mention a lot of children. Taylor brushed off these kinds of thoughts--it was amazing how she can drift away in her thoughts so easily.

"Well, you must've had a good friend somewhere," Taylor remarked cheerfully, this being the only other reason she can come up with. "It's looking good. Well, you can tell if it's made of celestial bronze. Just shoot at a mortal. If it just passes through like the mortal wasn't there, then yep, it's made of celestial bronze." Taylor paused, chuckling. "I wouldn't advise you to try that though. If it isn't celestial bronze then you might end up in trouble."

"Haha your funny. Im sure we can find out somehow. Maybe my God parent was looking out for me because that day was the start of the monsters. But i dont know, but im not complaining." Pender looked over at Edith. "Hey shes gone? She probably went to look for a stable for her horse or something. So umm Taylor, how do I get claimed?" Pender asked curiously.

Taylor laughed along, but couldn't help but feel a little resentment. If what Pender said was true, then... oh gods that was favoritism. Taylor chuckled at her line of thoughts, but in all honesty she did feel a little bad about not being able to have any kind of contact with her mom. She was supposed to be the last family she had left, after all.

"Just take it to a Hephaestus kid. They can probably tell you what it's made of," Taylor said. She then realized that they had been walking quite a distance away from the hill now, and it seemed like the girl on the horse didn't follow them. Taylor figured Pender was right, but she was a little anxious. Camp was a huge place and it was easy to get lost.

"As for being claimed... You don't really have to do anything. You get claimed if the gods feel like claiming you already." It sounded a little harsh, but it was the truth. Some demigods never even get claimed at all and just get stuck in the Hermes cabin. Taylor opted not to mention that to Pender though.

"Hmm" Pender got his first view of camp and when he saw the archery range and the archers practicing, his heart skipped a beat he loved archery. Suddenly a bright gold fiery sun appeared above his head. He tried hitting it away but his hand passed right through. "What the heck! What is this? This can't be good." he said sounding alarmed.

Taylor laughed at Pender's attempt to swat the sun. It really looked rather comical. "Dude, calm down," she said in between laughs. Her eyes swept over the symbol above his head and the bow he held. Yep, seems like her guess was right.

"Congrats, son of Apollo," Taylor said, grinning at Pender. She found it cool how Apollo claimed him right after Pender asked about the whole claiming process. Maybe the gods really paid more attention to their kids than Taylor thought. "Well, I guess that explains the whole claiming thing."

"Yeah I guess so. Hah the Gods should send in a warning note with their sigh so kids like me dont have a heart attack." Pender said " So Im a son of Apollo, that explains alot. So do you know alot of people here?" Pender asked

Taylor liked Pender's sense of humor. He was great friend material, Taylor could see that. She shrugged at his question as she looked over some kids who were practicing archery.

"More or less," Taylor said. "I know most of the people here by face. But I have issues trying to remember their names. There are just a lot of them! You'll get used to it though."

Taylor looked over the cabins formed in a U formation not far ahead. "At any rate, you can go meet your half-siblings over there," she said, pointing to the cabin that seemed to glint golden under the sun. "Apollo kids are a happy lot, so don't worry about them."
