James very rarely felt as if he was happy, especially as of late; his feelings came in bursts and thunders. Some days he woke up and just couldn't leave his bed, knowing that the day would just bring dread and pain and bull, even if it usually was bearable. And, on other days, he just wanted to wake up and climb and fall and get back up again, not giving a single shit about what the world had to hurl at him. Today was one of these days: it did not bother him that he had awaken from his slumber unnaturally by ten in the morning by his noising siblings. His first instinct was to grab a shower and get out into the cold, winter air. Carter was not bold enough to wear what had only months before, however. Now he has chosen to appropriately dress in denim jeans, a plain white shirt beneath a scarf and his woolen jumper. He had never been one to care about he looked like as of late, and it was no wonder that he had bought this old, baggy jumper in a flea market. He liked the vintage look, if that was possible for him to like something other than himself. Practically skipping from the door of his cabin, he traced the path that he had many times before to the cabin closer. He took the back route: he had climbed in through Faye's window many times before - it was only natural, seeing as it was against the rules for boys and girls to be in the same room in a cabin, and James loved to break rules - and closed it delicately with his hand behind him, keeping the frosty bite out of the warm room. Trying to step as softly as he could, James tip-toed over to the bed that his girlfriend was lying in, waiting until he was right at the side before flopping forward, sprawling heavily on top of both the duvet and Faye's legs, a smirk on his face as he hoped to wake the girl up as annoyingly as possible.

Faye McJean
Faye had never been a heavy sleeper, but for some strange reason that night was a breeze. Maybe it was the sleep medication that she had borrowed from the infirmary, or the fact that she had hot chocolate before she slipped under the covers. Whatever the reason, she didn't have the consciousness to question it. Her sleep was dreamless and peaceful, all the things the teenager had been missing. Six hours of sleep had become difficult for Faye recently, so the good ten hours she was working on was welcome.
The demigod had herself turned so that her back was towards the clear window, her blankets twisted around her body like a cocoon. She was wearing her fuzzy polka pot pajamas with a worn camp shirt, obviously not expecting any company. Her dark brown curls were randomly splayed across the expanse of her patchwork pillow. Shivering at a hint of chill, she hid farther under her quilt.
When a large force hopped into her bed, the demigod's eyes snapped open, her fingers wrapping around one of her spare knives. Inhaling, she spun around, expecting a monster, or at least an intruder. Pressing the metallic blade against the stranger's neck, she propped herself up, only to find her blankets wrapped around her feet, causing her to collapse lamely onto the figure. In an attempt to reclaim some of her dignity, Faye glanced up at the demigod, groaning when she saw starling blue eyes. "Damn you, James," she muttered, tossing the knife onto the carpet. Rubbing her eyes, she sat up and ran her fingers through her curls. "What time is it?" Faye asked, raising an eyebrow as she tugged her hair into a ponytail.

The son of Ares should definitely have expected the reaction that was received: Faye was always the one to choose to defend herself at instinct, which was wise, yet he found it ironically funny how it was directed at him. "Feisty." Not being the first time he had had a blade at his throat, James just held out his arm in a surrender motion, but the smirk on his lips seeming to just grow wider and expand on his face. He found things similar to this always amusing, and especially if it was from Faye, because it would mean that he was able to tease her about this to no-end in the future. He just winked at her, his startling blue irises watching her as she pulled her hair back and away. "Damn me?!" He just scoffed, his eyebrows raising incredulously up at her once he twisted to lie on his back, still half covering the girl on the lower half of her body. "I'm not the one who just put the blade to someone's throat, darling. And it's ten. Usually you're the stupid one up at this time." James was the sleeper out of the pair. Faye was usually the one that dragged his sorry-ass out of bed and into the cold, indecent air. They both knew that. James was always the stupid one, however, even though he tried to accuse the girl of being it this time. Once he had watched Faye finish putting her hair away, he reached up with a tired groan and gently took her wrist within his clumsy and worn hand, moving her own slender hand into his curly, still-damp hair as if for her to play with it. James actually enjoyed little things like that, as Faye had provably learnt, although he was only really like this when the to of them were along together: if they were around camp around others, James would just try and seem as unromantic and closed as possible. Everyone knew they were dating - it was the gossip of camp at one point - yet James still didn't want people to seem his weak and attached, even though he allowed Faye to see all sides of him. "Please tell me you don't have any plans for the day." James mumbled, closing his eyes and enjoying the feel of the duvet beneath him and the warmth radiating off Faye and the familiar sweet smell that seemed to follow her everywhere. He could fall back to sleep back then and there, and probably would have if it wasn't so eager to go on a little adventure.

Faye McJean
Faye found herself smiling along with him, glancing down at the celestial bronze metal, which had been discarded somewhere under Livia's bed. She couldn't help but laugh at his gesture; it was strange how distantly close the two had become since his return to camp. Really, the teenager had forgotten how much she enjoyed his company. The demigod had also forgotten how a simple wink could make her insides melt and her cheeks hot. "Yes, damn you," she insisted, pinning back a few stray hairs. "I could've blasted you with morning breath or something," Faye reasoned, shaking her head at how lame that sounded.
Watching him turn over, she took the chance to readjust herself, leaving her feet where they were, trying to maximize physical contact. Faye smiled. Darling. She shrugged innocently, agreeing with him. Normally she couldn't ever fall asleep, making the sunlight streaming in a new feature. "I missed morning training," she stated, feigning distaste. Honestly, one training session wasn't going to make or break Faye. Fighting in numerous battles had kept her alert and fit, which was obvious when looking at the knife on the floor.
She relaxed her wrist as he took it, bending her body with the movement so that she needed to prop herself up with her unused elbow to keep herself from getting a face full of pillow. Sliding her fingers between his curls, she tried to calm her grin, but failed. Faye wouldn't ever admit it, but she often wondered if they would have children, and if they would inherit his gorgeous curls. Personally, she hoped for both of those things. Inhaling, the teenager felt her insides melt that much more. "You always smell so good," she mumbled softly, twirling one of his curls around her fingertips. While James was already attractive, the scent of him increased that tenfold.
Smirking at the question, she halted her efforts to stay upright and relaxed into the fluff of a pillow, adjacent to his face. "Nope, I'm free," Faye lied. The demigod didn't want to train today anyways, she had a warm feeling spreading over the expanse of her small frame that told her responsibility was overrated.

Times like this, James was able to forgot the terrible three year he had had and just enjoy the moment. Enjoy the moment with someone who was different to everyone else. James had never felt like this before, and he had thought for a long while that he didn't own the capability of actually loving someone. He had thought he was in love with Taylor. He had thought he was in love with Tori. That all seemed so childish and measly in comparison: James could not describe how he felt when he was with Faye, but it was unlike any feeling he had ever experienced. "You're such a nerd." he just snorted, burying his smirk deeper within the blanket, "Keep your morning breath away from me, though." James opened one eye slightly to see if his teasing was working, peeking at her expression. Jame moved his hand across to rest it on Faye's hip, hugging himself closer to the girl, if that was even possible. "Would you rather go to morning training, or just lie here with me?" James answered, his cocky self knowing the answer without having to even ask, because he felt the same. He would much rather lie here with her for days on end than do anything else. It was comforting and nice and real when he was just able to embrace and hold the girl. The smirk on the eighteen year old's face slipped into a smile when Faye started to play with his hair, his eyes closing once more and having no choice but to flow into a calm, relaxing state. "I know. You smell terrible, sorry." James twisted up his nose as if to feel repulsed, his English speech coming out husky and amused, "I don't know why we're dating, I can't cope with your stink." The son of Ares grinned once again then, kissing titling his face up to kiss the palm of the girl's hand whilst she toyed with his locks. Opening his eyes once more when Faye laid her head down by his, he stared intently at the girl. "Good. I want to take you out for the day." He finally revealed, using his hand on her hand to pull the girl closer to him, his nose brushing against her chin, "Out of camp. How does that sound for you, McJean?"

Faye McJean
She really hoped that her breath didn't smell that bad. The taste of not brushing your teeth was gods awful, and she knew it. In all honesty, Faye just wanted to keep her relationship with James steady, which implied that they kept all of their limbs and that they didn't die. While most of her other relationships had ended in ways beyond her control, she still felt entirely responsible for them being cut short. She felt like she always ended up with frayed strings or blood on her hands, and no matter what she did, it was always there. With James, she felt sure of herself, like their burdens were no longer theirs to bear alone, because they had each other. The reassurance allowed her to sleep at night.
She smirked at his comments, still running her fingers through his hair as she caught the glimpse of icy blue from behind pillows and blankets. Faye loved how the term 'nerd' had lost its harmful meaning and taken up an affectionately sarcastic tone. "No kisses for you today then," she replied, raising both of her eyebrows in a challenge. Faye felt his suggestion to move closer and did so, closing a never present gap between them. "Hmm, that's a difficult decision," the teenager mused. There was hardly ever a choice when it came to James; she would always chose him. Still feeling the lazy haze from sleep, she nodded, temporarily shutting her eyes. Even without seeing, Faye felt like she could observe everything in her small little world, as if everything was perfectly in tune with each other.
The demigod opened her eyes a few seconds after closing them, studying James' face with a reoccurring interest. His smile reflected back onto her face as she slowed her movements, savoring every second. Faye scoffed at his remark, almost withdrawing her hand. She tried to come up with something exceedingly sarcastic to say, but nothing came to mind. "You're right, we should probably just quit now," the demigod replied casually, smirking all the while. Her smirk melted into a smile as his kiss warmed her fingers.
She tried not to blink as she stared into his eyes, one eyebrow slightly raised. Faye let her arm go limp around his neck, their closeness reminding her of her bad breath. Her lips curved into more of a smile at his suggestion. "Sounds pretty good, Carter," Faye whispered, tilting her head away from his as she spoke. Her stomach buzzed with excitement, even if her tone was laid back. Would this count as their first actual date?"I think I'll need to clean up first, though," she admitted, turning her face back in line with his.

Raising both of his eyebrows to match the expression pulled across Faye's face, James just laughed a deep chuckle, his chest shaking. "Fine." James just nodded, a smug look playing within his eyes, "although i bet you anything that you're going to want to kiss me and you'll break." The son of Ares felt uplifted to be in this mood, and he didn't really care about anyone else but the two of them. Liv - Faye's sister, whom he tried to avoid at all costs - was thankfully not in the bed across the room, yet he was in the mindset that if she had been, it would not have fazed James from climbing through the window like he had. He felt as if it was impossible for someone to bring him down right now, which was very uplifting for him. "No it isn't. You'd pick me for sure." He boasted, thinking this and knowing that it was true. Laughing, James leant his head down away from faye's face, leaning in to place a kiss on the underside of her jaw. "It doesn't count if it's not the lips." he defended himself, finally pulling back again to back where his face had been by faye's. His hand moved up to brush hair away from the side of her face, wrapping it carefully around his fingers as he did so and staring at it with curiosity, admiring her hair internally. "It's settled then: we're breaking up." James agreed in a mumble, although he was obviously only joking, moving on to stroke Faye's cheekbone with his thumb. James stayed like that for a moment, the only sounds in the room being their breathing. You could hear the talking from other rooms and the shouts from the training process outside, yet James didn't focus on that. Snapping out of it, James let out a huge sigh and rolled over onto his back, looking up at the ceiling and moving his arm off Faye. "Go on then. Get ready. I'll wait here." James closed his eyes, his ever-present smirk still wide on his face.

Laughing as he mirrored her teasing expression, she relaxed further into her bed sheets, stretching out her legs. "Bull," Faye quipped, putting large effort into rolling her eyes. The demigod would've completed the phrase, but she was either to tired to care, or afraid of being bothered by James for being a potty mouth. She didn't swear often anyways, at least not aloud. Now that the sleep medicine was surely out of her system, Faye knew that all of the warm buzzes and electricity she felt was not the drugs, but the person across from her. This feeling was new, despite the other interactions they had, each time felt knew and fresh. She would never be bored by the magnificent enigma that was James Carter; every bit of him fascinated her.
"You must have a loose definition of 'for sure'," the teenager responded, an amused expression fixating itself on the curve of her lips. Her short giggle was cut short by an inhale as James' lips graced the underside of her jaw. "For sure," Faye agreed, grinning. She stared at his icy blue orbs as he caressed the side of her face and played with her hair. Sliding her hand from his curls, down his arm to his hand, she ran the pad of her finger over his knuckle."I'm glad we could end this so peacefully." Her grin widened, if that was even possible. For once, the silence between them was acceptable, exceptional actually. Faye knew they didn't need to speak for their emotions to be explained.
Unlatching her arm from his neck as he moved, Faye sat upright and stretched out her limbs, yawning. " 'Kay," she breathed, hopping out of the bed and over to her dresser. The teenager selected a pair of skinny jeans and a pale blue sweater before dashing off to the bathroom. When she emerged, her locks were tied half up and half down, and - most importantly - her breath was fresh. Faye also smelled of raspberries and amber. Rolling back onto the bed, she stopped her movement with a kiss on his cheek. "Ready."

Just smiling to himself, James listened to the sound of Faye's voice. It was warm and kind and familiar, which he liked. He had always been annoyed by the American accent - back at home, the English found it funny that even though the Americans loved their accent, they were usually annoyed in return - yet he had lived in her country for three years, and had had no choice but to adjust. But James could listen to this girl talk all day as long as it was affectionate, and that really meant something. This was the boy whom usually just loved to beat people up and get nothing in return. That was his second love, and Faye was scarily now his first. He had fallen deep, and it was impossible for him to imagine not being this far in. James could have easily fallen asleep as he waited for Faye to re-emerge, and he was lucky that he didn't. However, he didn't open his eyes until a few seconds after he felt her warm lips press against his cheek, his smile growing wide and curling up his face. Finally, he turned his head to have his blue eyes look at her, a glint of mischief making it's way into his orbs. "You look great." James told her, his naturally sarcastic tone finding it's way into his voice yet meaning every word he said. Leaning forward to break his own bet and press a kiss against Faye's lips finally, James quickly pulled away and rolled off the bed onto his feet, smoothing down his clothes. "Right. We've got a lot to get through. Shall we go?" he asked as he looked down at her, extending out his hand for her to take.

Faye McJean
Faye never spent much time on her appearance, but with James lying in the bed a few feet away, she wanted to try a little harder. While she changed into fresh clothing and preformed her daily routine, the girl's mind wandered past that, towards the future. The demigod always thought she knew what she wanted, a safe life with a degree and a house. Faye thought that was all she wanted, but now her plans were changing. Success wasn't her first priority anymore; she wanted to protect her loved ones first. James, her siblings, the campers - all of them. She hadn't even realized this desire until she stared long enough at cabin six's group picture that had been pinned up against the mirror. She would protect them to her last breath.
Her heart raced as she burst out of the bathroom and greeted James, smiling all the way. "Oh - thanks," Faye replied distantly, glancing down at her outfit as if to remember what she was wearing. His kiss surprised her, but she smirked as soon as she felt it. "So, what do you owe me?" the demigod asked cheekily, her eyes sparkling. She straightened up, glancing around the room for her small backpack. Slinging the leather bag over her shoulder once she found it, Faye turned back to James and took his hand. "Sounds exciting," she stated, grinning. "I can drive, if you want," Faye offered.

The son of Ares was rarely kind and generous, yet Faye was different. He did want to treat her. James found it crazy that, two years ago, the pair had hated each-other. He could remember being stuck in a room with her during cabin leader meetings, trying to get under her skin as much as possible and doing whatever he could to get at her. He used to make comments about how Vinnie would go on a leave her - which he now felt guilt about considering everything she had been through, although they didn't talk about it - and that time in the arena where they had nearly ripped each-other's throats out. The turning point of their relationship had been the dance where he had, randomly, asked her if she wanted to dance. He had always teased her about she had probably never even kissed a boy and, now, two years later, he was the one kissing her. A Taylor and a Tori later, here was Faye, and he couldn't be happier because of this. He had cheated on both: seeing Tori whilst having been speaking to Taylor, and had kissed another deceptive girl whilst being with Tori, yet he would not cheat of Faye. He didn't really look at other girls anymore, which was new to him. He could find them attractive, and that was something that would never change, yet he would never want to cheat on this girl. She meant too much to him. "Oh shit yeah, um, whatever you wish is my command for the day, darling." he answered, pretending to bow. Matching Faye's grin on his own face, he felt warmer once she had taken her hand, looking down at her next to him. "Oh yeah, that sounds good. I don't have my license so I couldn't drive anyway, so I was hoping you'd say that or else we'd be hitchhiking there." he admitted, leading her out of her room ad through her own cabin, vaguely knowing the way through. there were few campers here, yet the looks he got as he walked within their haven made his grin even wider, knowing that he had at least threatened or punched many of the people residing in this cabin, and would happily do it again.

"Cool beans," she replied nonchalantly, grinning as he bowed. The spring in her step was undeniable as the pair wove in and our of cabin six's halls, passing other demigods who both glared and grinned. She knew very well that some of her siblings didn't approve of the 'bad boy' from the Ares Cabin, but she could care less. Those whose judgements she cared about were normally positive towards him. Except Liv... but she was working on that. In a perfect world, all of her dearly beloveds got along. Then again, this wasn't a perfect world; it was a world filled with despair, betrayal and premature death. However, all negativity had evaporated from her mind while James' fingers were laced with her's. Faye felt like his strength was flowing through her as well, stabilizing her.
The crisp air greeted them as they exited, stepping out into grass sprinkled with snowflakes and a teasing wind. The demigod's hair billowed around her face as they walked, rather briskly. "I don't think I've adjusted to winter," Faye commented, squeezing his hand. Despite growing up in Minnesota, she still felt the cold through her sweater and jeans. Camp's parking lot wasn't more than a quarter of a mile from cabin six, but it felt like longer.
Once it came into view, Faye slid her free hand into her pocket to search for her keys while she scanned for her grey impala. The car was far from new, but it worked, which was all the teenager cared about; she didn't leave camp long enough for distance to matter. Unlocking the car, she broke their contact and skipped the rest of the way over, turning the key to warm it up. "We might need to stop for gas," she admitted, shifting in the cloth seat. The heater audibly attempting to make up for the lack of warmth as the Athenian turned off the radio and messed with her mirrors.

too late to run
James had not sat in the passenger seat of a car for a while, and even longer before he sat in the driver's seat. He used to take his mothers and friends' cars ut for spins around the estate when he lived back in London - illegally, of course - yet he had never taken a proper lesson in his life. But sitting here, he realized that he would never be able to really drive again, as there was only so much driving he imagined he could do with only one hand. He decided that he should speak to the Hephy kids and see if they could create a robotic hand for him to function and use, as that should make life much more easier. Like the type you found on Game of Thrones, or something that hospitals could usually provide. He imagined that he could threaten a few dorks to do his handy work. "'ll pay for it." James just told her, resting a hand of her knee for a brief second before pushing the seat of his chair back a little, giving him more leg space. He wondered if Vinnie had been the last person to sit in this seat. That idea unnerved him a little, as he didn't want to feel that he was still competing with the ghost of her past boyfriend, but there was no way that he would ever mention him again to the girl. James thought that he had been Faye's first love - even though he was aware that she had dated his Ares brother years before - and he would never want to do that to her, no matter what effect it may have or had on him. "Where do you want to eat? When we get to the center, I mean." James knew that he didn't have lots of money in his wallet, d he would need to withdraw some after they picked up gas and before they ate, but he had enough morals that he didn't want or expect Faye to pay for anything when they went out, which was very rare for the odd couple.

Faye McJean
Faye hadn't been in any car recently. She had shut herself off for a few months after the apocalypse, and then her responsibilities had kept her locked at camp. Occasionally she could feel the shyer, hesitant little girl inside of her creeping out, pressuring her to avoid social contact for longer periods of time. She could get locked in a project for hours without sleeping, but when she didn't want to speak to anyone, Faye knew it was time to get her act together. She was stronger than that. At least, she liked to think so.
As she finished adjusting her mirrors, she caught his comment and smiled. "Oh, thanks," Faye replied, internally grateful. The teenager had her wallet stowed away in her purse, but the amount inside of it was limited to about ten dollars with a handful of drachmas. Her lack of money wasn't why she was thankful for James paying; it was that he cared enough to. The gesture had initially reminded her of something Vinnie would do, but the thought turned to ash in her mind instantly after. He was dead, but not dead to her. He was her ghost, and Faye knew he would follow her around forever, despite her strong love towards James. His hand on her knee hadn't even registered with her until he withdrew it, which left her body craving the heat that the Impala was failing to deliver. The vehicle was about ten years old, but still.
Faye set the Impala in reverse and began to exit the parking lot, her limbs stiff. While the demigod didn't hate driving, she surely didn't enjoy it. She felt like she was solving a constant problem when on the road, as if everything she could try wouldn't work. So, naturally, she wasn't very talkative. "What?" the teenager asked, glancing over at him for a moment. She noticed he had changed the passenger seat from Livia's settings. Oh well. "I'm not sure - I haven't been in the city for a while. Maybe fast food. I could go for a milkshake or fries. Or both," Faye rambled, tapping on the brakes to rest the roads. The last thing she wanted to do was go in the ditch. "You can uh... turn on the radio if you want," she added, motioning over to the dash vaguely, her eyes glued to the road.

too late to run
The trees that surrounded the car flew past quickly, even though they weren't travelling very fast. It was nice for James to get out, even though things had gone wrong in the past when he had been out of camp. But, this reminded him of when he had left for a few weeks a few months before, on his own, yet this is how he would have wanted it to be: with Faye coming alongside him. He ran a hand through his locks of wavy hair, making a mental note of how the sides needed to be cut a little. He would get around to it, even if he had to hack at it himself.
James studied the side of Faye's face when she focused ahead, his icy eyes admiring her features with an amused smirk, knowing that she was putting all her concentration onto the task ahead of driving. "We can go wherever you want. I don't care." He tried nit to sound blunt, but gentlemanly as he was trying to be thus, yet he wasn't sure if it worked. He wasn't one to care. He had annoyed Faye many times in the past, yet he was sure that she loved him. "If we see somewhere that looks nice, we can just go there." He shrugged then.
Pushing a lock of hair back to Faye's ear from her face, James then reached forward to adjust the knob on the radio, playing a local charts-station quietly in the background, saving them from the silence. "Can I try and drive? Before we get on the roads?" A devilish grin lit up James' face, suddenly as excited as a child at the thought.

Faye McJean
Faye watched frost bitten trees pass by as she ground her teeth together, intently watching the dials on her dashboard. Being ticketed for speeding wasn't exactly on her bucket list. Her bucket list included much safer, more innocent endeavors like sleeping for twenty four hours or riding in a passenger train across the country. But being stopped by the police? Yeah, she preferred that it didn't happen, especially since she wasn't sure of where her license was. Her nose itched too, but she wouldn't scratch it because a) James was right next to her and b) she didn't want to veer into the ditch. She didn't want her father dealing with the same emotional warfare that she had when he was in the hospital, all because of an automobile accident.
She could feel James' eyes on her and tried not to smile, but her efforts failed as she let out a small laugh. "Alright," Faye replied. In all honesty, she didn't care where they ate. Anything could be better than camp food. The food wasn't awful by any means, it was just the same kind of style from week to week. She was looking forward to something different. When he brushed a strand of her hair behind her ear, the demigod flinched, but she didn't move. "Thanks," she breathed, slowing down as they reached an intersection.
At first, the teenager wanted to reject his idea immediately. She stopped at the stop sign, scanning the gravel road for any other vehicles. Hearing and seeing none, she unbuckled her seat belt. His anxiety frightened her a bit, but Faye trusted him."Okay, don't kill us," she quipped as she slid out of the driver side and jogged around the car to hop into the passenger seat, trying to keep calm. She trusted James. She did. She just didn't trust cars, or other drivers.

James actually was unable to believe that Faye was trusting him enough to have a go at driving. He was probably one of the least responsible people that lived at camp, and his hyperactivity meant that he was unable to concentrate on the same thing for too long, so it was easy for him to become distracted, so he concurred that she must've been crazy. He gaped as she got out and moved over to his side, before getting out himself with a smirk and hopping into the passengers seat. Once he had strapped himself in, he looked over to wink at her, remarking "I'll try my best, babe."
There were many differences from the cars he had driven before to this one. Firstly, there was no gear box like the ones that were driven in Britain, so he wouldn't have to worry as much about trying to control the vehicle with only one hand. He definitely wouldn't have been able to drive if the car hadn't been an automatic. The other was that the side was on the left instead of the right, and that he was supposed to drive on the left, although he doubted it mattered now as he would only be driving on quiet pathways. He slowly lifted his foot of the clutch and pressed down on the accelerator, yet he did this too quickly and the car jolted forward a little. "Sorry." he said with a sheepish smile, finally controlling the car to smoothly drive down the road.
When he was sure that he had gotten the car into a comfortable speed down the long road, James looked across the smirk at Faye. "I'm good at this. Better than you, at least." He pushed the speed up, enough for a sensible person to worry.

Faye McJean | 'This was a really bad idea' she thought to herself as she opened the passenger side door. Faye wasn't overly concerned with James driving, she trusted him with her life, but she was concerned about herself. The last time she had been a passenger was with Vinnie, and that car ride and been a step short of terrifying. Males tended to drive a little recklessly, as she remembered, and the teenager wasn't sure she would be able to keep her nerves under control. Casting a glance at James, she caught the wink and laughed, fiddling with the tag on the back of her sweater.
She inhaled as the car jolted forward, her heart stopping in her chest. "No worries," Faye mumbled, her cheeks hot. With one hand she gripped the arm rest tightly, as the other twirled a spare strand of hair. Whenever the demigod was nervous, she could be found twirling her dark locks. On a particular awful day, if one paid close attention, it would be likely that one strand of hair would be a perfect curl, while the rest would be wavy. Ever since her father nearly passed away in a car accident, the teenager had been cautious with vehicles. If the distance wasn't very far, she would chose to walk rather than drive.
The soft hum of the impala's engine didn't soothe her as she felt them increase speed. "James, uh - the speed limit's fifty five," she commented, glancing over at the speed dial. Faye could hear her heartbeat pound loudly in her ears. Hopefully he'd slow down. She glanced in the mirror, making sure no one was behind them. It revealed an open road, free of any other occupants. The teenager turned her gaze back to the road, her foot tapping the floor uneasily.

Carter was so lost in the reckless fun he was having that he didn't at first notice that his girlfriend besides him was growing nervous. it was just too exhilarating for him to be here right now: a couple of months ago, when he was lying in that infirmary bed after the same girl had both dismembered him and saved him life, he had thought of all the things that he would never be able to do again. Driving was one of the things he didn't he would properly be able to do - even though he could never drive legally anyway - along with playing playstation and trivial things such as that. To be in the position he was in, everything around him just seemed to blur out as he made the most of it.
The grin on his lips did not fade, yet grew once Faye had pointed out the speed limit. He eyed the dial, seeing that they were already bordering over that, yet he didn't care to stop there. He pushed him foot down a little, squinting a little, "Let's see how fast I can push this bad boy." he laughed, his english accent seeming to add a slightly aggressive passion to the mix. "Sixty. Sixty four. Sixty nine." the seventeen year old kept an eye on the dial, his eyes continuously flicking from the dial to the road every few seconds. "Seventy two. Seventy bloody six. Jesus." He laughed then, his eyes finally flickering to the rear-view mirror. He saw a car pull up onto the road behind them from a side street, and his gut turned when he spotted - what he thought was - sirens on the top.
"Shit." James grunted, his smile fading. He poked out his tongue as he concentrated, thinking quickly: he didn't think that the police car - if it even was that - had clocked his speed, so he little time to act. He pulled off the accelerator somewhat, forcing the car to screech a little and wobble ever so slightly as it slowed down quickly, the speed dropping back down to forty odd in little time. James' eyes stayed fixed on the car behind him, realizing as it got closer that what he had mistaken as sirens were merely just top-car luggage boxes. Was his eye sight just getting worse, or had he been seeing things? He didn't let himself dwell on that thought, staying under the speed limit having lost his reckless feelings. He looked over at Faye, an eyebrow tipping up, "What's up?" He asked, finally noticing her grip on the armrest.

Faye McJean | Faye was calculating the possibility of them crashing as they of them drove along. Road conditions were prime, so that wouldn't affect them. The only factors she could determine were lack of attentiveness from James or random animals running out from the treeline. Occasionally she would pry her eyes from the road to see that her boyfriend was euphoric. That made her smile for split second, before she noticed a pot hole in the road and went back to mentally crunching numbers.
She was hoping that once she informed James of the speed limit he would respect her comment and slow down some, but the grin on his face said otherwise. Her eyes widened as she felt the vehicle speed up, mentally slapping herself. "James," she stated, eyeing the mirror in fear of seeing someone else on the lonely road. If her heart rate was fast before, it was about twice as fast now. Faye could feel her palms getting sweaty where she gripped the arm rest, her nails digging into the fake leather. The demigod calculated their probability of crashing again as he called out the speed, her eyes flicking from the mirror to the road every other second.
While his English - infused tone of voice was kind of sexy, the demigod was too nervous to consider relaxing. Her brain froze when she saw a car come up behind them, with something on the top. She couldn't see very clearly - she hadn't put in her contacts. Without an arm, and a licence, the chance of the two of them being cleared by an officer was very slim. Faye cast a glance at James, waiting to see what his reaction. When the impala slowed, the seat belt slammed against the teenager, casuing her to gasp. But when she looked over at the dial, it read around forty. Maybe they'd get lucky.
As the other car neared, Faye noticed that the 'sirens' weren't sirens, and that the car wasn't going to pull them over. "They'll probably pass us," she muttered breathlessly, attempting to return her heart rate to an acceptable number. The demigod rubbed her hands over her jeans in attempt to rid them of the perspiration that had accumulated. "I was doing the math for our chance of crashing," Faye replied swiftly. "Nervous habits," she added, twirling that strand of hair once more.

Even though James now knew that the car behind them was not actually the police or someone that could book them, he still kept glancing at the rear-view mirror as if the car could change into a police car at any moment in time. He didn't even process the sound of Faye gasping, just keeping a watchful eye out until the car had surpassed the impala, and James finally let out breath that he didn't even realize he had been holding. He wanted to turn the radio down to silent, but doing that meant that there would be no hands on the wheel, and he didn't think that he was feeling risky enough to do that after the last shock.
The demigod had always been sensitive at heart: despite the reputation he had for punching people about and just being a bad person, he still has insecurities. The reason he probably pushed people around so much was because it was so easy to tip him around the edge, and then that anger was the only thing that controlled him, and took place of his mind. Because of this sensitivity, James' lips pressed into a line, his eyes moving to stay firmly on the road in front of him. "I get it. You don't trust me and my driving. Good to know." He sarcastically nodded once at Faye, all the happiness that had been inside him only a moment before completely gone. These mood-swings were the things that constantly scared him, yet he didn't realize they had happened until he was able to look back on it. He didn't want to dwell on why they happened too much, either.
"If you would prefer for me to get out and you drive, faye, by all means, knock yourself out." his fist clenched around the steering wheel, his knuckles slowly turning white, but he was too focused on the road in front of him to notice.

Faye McJean | To an Athenian, doing math was a daily and uninteresting task, certainly one that most wouldn't take offense of. But Faye hadn't thought through her comment until after she said it, and now that she had, she realized that it sounded as if she was criticizing his driving skills. The demigod hadn't meant to offend him, especially not when he was driving a large piece of machinery that could easily kill both of them. She found herself glancing at the car as it passed, wondering if they noticed the shift in driving style over the last few seconds. Faye definitely had.
Hearing him exhale, she smiled softly, glad to see that James was at least slightly concerned about their well being. The radio's soft music suddenly changed to static, causing the teenager to quickly press it off. Just as she did, she caught the emphasis of James' comment. His tone was dry and cold, so different from the tone he had used a few moments previously, when they were speeding down the road. "What? No, you're doing fine," she replied, lowering her gaze to her shoes. Faye didn't say anything more, scared to increase the sudden burst of anger that he had displayed.
She had done plenty of research on post traumatic stress, and now assumed that James' mood swing was a side effect of it, but she didn't mention it. Hopefully the atmosphere in the car would return to normal in a few minutes. While Faye waited for the storm to subside, she looked out the window as trees passed by.

it's like you're trying to get to heaven in a hurry
but the queue is shorter than you'd thought it would be
one, two, three, four, five... james started to count to ten in his head, trying to tell himself that there was nothing to get mad about: it was only faye being faye, and he wasn't be very mature himself. he was just quite an angry guy, and it took the shortest of things to make him snap. so he just listened to her assure himself, not taking his eyes off the road or unclenching his jaw. he wanted to remain in silence for a minute or two, telling himself that everything was fine. he had always had to control himself temper-wise, and most at camp knew that he had a reputation for just punching the next random kid that came along. he was trying to stop, but it was hard.
he let his hand relax around the steering wheel, choosing to drum his fingers on the top of the leather instead. the silence echoing around the car was making his more tense, if anything, but he was sure that all his temper towards faye had deflated, and now it was just an urgency to get into the city. he turned a corner, knowing that there was just one shorter stretch of path before they pulled out onto one of the more busy roads. he looked over at faye when he was on the straight again, keeping the corner of his eye focused on the road.
"I didn't mean to snap at you." he finally told her, looking forward once more. it wasn't often he said words like this, and the next was even rarer, "sorry."

Faye McJean | As she watched the trees pass by, she noticed the occasional stir of bushes, most likely from a squirrel or a bird. However, the shadows were deceiving to the daughter of Athena, and she could've sworn she saw something. Was that a pair of eyes glowing back at her or just a trick of the light? Her heartbeat increased again, not from the speed or her nerves, but out of paranoia. 'I'm just on edge' she told herself, deepening her breaths. Her grey eyes flicked back into the dashboard of the vehicle, checking to see if he was still tense. He was, but Faye made no movement to help ease the situation. Instead she twirled a strand of her hair, trying to forget the yellow eyes she could've sworn she saw.
When she glanced over at him again, he had relaxed, a soft, patterned tapping filling the air. Faye preferred the noise over the silence, it gave her something else to think about. She wanted to relieve the elephant in the room, but she didn't. Faye wasn't good at that. When James finally did speak, she exhaled, not realizing she had been holding her breath. "I know," the teenager responded softly, looking over at him. She loved him, unconditionally so, and the worst part? She wasn't even sure why. Okay, maybe Faye had an idea. He was, despite his exterior, a sensitive, protective, charming guy. But everyone had their flaws. She still loved him though, even in his moments of anger. Love was very illogical.
"Do you want to switch back before we get into town?" she asked, staring back out the window. The yellow eyes seemed to return, as if they were taunting her.

james was somewhat relieved that faye hadn't snapped back at him or not have forgiven him. although, that wasn't their relationship: james was usually the one that had the emotional spurs and turns whereas faye stayed calm and collective. he would not have been able to keep his cool if she had been to one to snap at him like he had just done to her. he would not have been able to saw off her arm under pressure like she had. she was his rock, and he knew that she knew that even though he never told her.
James allowed Faye words to hang in the air as he finally checked the rear view mirrors one last time, knowing that they were very close to the city. He nodded then, slowing down and pulling to the side of the dirt path. When coming to a stop, he popped open to door and jumped out, stretching his legs quickly as he started to make his way around the car to Faye's side. the sound of a branch snapping in the woodland around him made his head snap up and his muscles flew out of habit, looking like a dog whom had just heard a squirrel.
his eyes squinted as he scanned to horizon the sound had come from, yet he saw no movement or heard any further noise. "I swear to the Gods I thought I heard...never mind." he shrugged it off, telling himself he was just being irrational and slouching down once more, continuing to get in the passengers seat.
