Anstice: The Life and Times of a Nerd

I sighed, pushing the door into the Arts & Crafts building. I wasn't here to make necklaces, nor paint a picture. I was here to read, as it was always seemingly empty, and it felt better on a hot day like this to stay inside. I sat down at a table, flipping open my book, Romeo and Juliet. Yes, I had decided to read it, y'know? Not really the original, but I had seen the play, and now I wanted to read it. I began reading, turning page by page, pushing my glasses up every once in a while.

Hair tied in a messy bun, I looked up as a tall boy entered the arts and crafts building. Setting down my paint brush, my light blue eyes watched as he sat down at a table to read. Strange that he decided to read in the arts and crafts area but who was I to judge. "I hate that story." I said, my voice cutting through the silence like a knife. "Tragic stories with tragic endings are depressing." Even though I was a daughter of Aphrodite and my mother enjoyed such tales, I liked it when the stories had happy endings. "Melinda Larkin, daughter of Aphrodite."

I looked up from the book, pushing my glasses back in-front of my eyes. "Oh, er...hello, I'm Anstice Young, son of Metis," I said, introducing myself. I laughed a bit. "Yeah, I haven't really read much of it, I just saw that play, and wanted to read the book..." I felt a bit shy, mostly nervous, in the company of a girl. I mean, it's not that I was afraid of her...I was just...okay, yeah, I was afraid of her.

"Huh." I said, turning back to the painting. "You read a lot?" I asked, picking up my brush and dipping it in a peach paint to continue working on my painting. It was a flower, a rather pretty flower since I detested painting/drawing unattractive things, but I had switched the colours around a bit to suit my taste. Peach was one of my favourite colours. Actually, I liked all colours equally. Maybe I liked peach a bit more. Just a little bit.

"P-Pretty much, yeah," I said. "Erm...whaty're you drawing?" I asked, tilting my head a little. I pushed my glasses up a bit. "Damn glasses!" I muttered to myself. "It looks like a flower to me," I said quietly. It looked pretty nice, actually. She was pretty good, if you asked me, that is.

Tilting my head like a mirror to his, I chuckled before straightening. "Yeah, it's a flower, not quite sure what it's called I saw it once before though." I said, turning to it and judging it before continuing. "Why don't you wear contacts? They don't get in the way as much as glasses do, and since you're a half-blood if your glasses get knocked off you'll be half-blind." Realizing that I had paused, I cleaned my paint brush in a jar of water before dipping it in white to add to the painting.

I shrugged. "I dunno...I never thought about contacts," I said, pushing my bookmark into the page, closing the book. "You do make a good point though..."

"How long have you been here?" I asked curiously. Since he had closed his book, I decided to rinse my paintbrushes and put them away. Pouring the coloured water into the sink, I rinsed that as well and put it away. When I came back, I sat at a different table from his but I turned a chair so I was facing him.

"This is my first year," I said, watching as she cleaned her utensils. "I'm pretty new to things here...so, what about you?"

"I've been here nine years." I said, pausing to frown. "And I'm sixteen. That means I've been here since I was seven, isn't that sad?"

"A bit..." I said. "How come you were here so long?"

"I'm not sure." I admitted, looking down to think about it. After not saying anything for a while I looked at Anstice curiously. "So, how old are you?"

"Sixteen," I said. "I look a lot younger than my actual age though..." I said, looking down a bit.

"Sixteen, huh, and you just came here? Man, am I jealous." I said, refraining from glaring at him. It wasn't his fault. "So do you like it here so far?"

I shrugged. "Yeah, pretty much." I laughed. "I don't know if you should be jealous...I mean, life at home wasn't so great..."

"'Cause of your dad or because of a step-mother?" I asked, wiggling my eyebrows at him to make him laugh. I wasn't as wary of him as I was of other people, and my eyes showed it. Maybe I was just getting tired of protecting myself from people.

I laughed a bit more, and smiled. "Mostly because of my step-mom. I mean...I like her, but she's a clean freak. She disinfects me before I go places," I explain. I pushed my glasses back up the bridge if my nose.

"Oh gosh, people like that are hilarious," I said, chuckling. "But why before you go places?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.
