I walked into the ball, feeling very akward. I wasn't a party person, and my sister Fae had made me go. She couldn't make it tonight, and that made me even more unsure of how this night was going to go. I walked over to a nice glass table, and got some punch. I straitened out my dress (which wasn't the most comfortable thing) and sat down, alone, at a table. I was wearing a short green and black dress, with a furry shawl. I was weaing very fancy earrings and necklace, with short high-heels. And as Fae's idea, a tiara.

Fae had told me that I might find the guy of my dreams here tonight, but I doubted it. Fae was the pretty one. Fae was the popular one. And, Fae was the party person. I thought it couldn't hurt me too much to go, so I had agreed. So, I sat and waited, not knowing what to expect.

Harold "Hal" Jackman was not the kind of guy one would expect to see at a ball. He was a 6'4", 210-pound son of Hephaestus, with ripped muscles and callused hands from working in the forges. Typically, his crooked nose, messy blond mane and two missing teeth made him look like a stereotypical redneck. However, that was far from the truth. Hal was a friendly, easygoing guy, and enjoyed a nice, relaxing party once in a while. He actually looked handsome enough now, with a sharp-looking orange suit, trimmed hair and a bit of cosmetics work done on his face to conceal the bruise over his left eye.
Hal scanned the area. Not many people were present, but he spotted one girl in a green-black dress sitting at a table close to him. She was rather pretty, so he decided to strike up a conversation.
"Good evening," Hal said, approaching her.

I blushed slightly, which was one of my terrible characteristics. I blushed at every guy I saw, and everything that happened to me. "Um... hello," I said, still blushing. It seemed as if every second, a new person came in. When that guy showed up, there was a good amount of people were there. I hoped that the amount of people stayed as it was. Now that a guy was actually talking to me, I felt bad that I didn't wear any makeup.

The son of Hephaestus offered his hand for a shake. "Name's Hal. Well, technically Harold, but that's no fun. Call me Hal. I'm one of the Hephaestus dudes. What about you?"

I giggled a bit at his 'no fun' comment about his name. I shook his hand, and smiled as best I could without looking embaressed. "I'm Fauna. My dad is Pan," I said.

"You're a child of Pan? Sweet, I always wanted to meet one of you," Hal said, genuinely excited. "I mean, given that us Hephaestus guys are always working with mechanical things, I've always wondered what it's like to be at the other end of the spectrum. What is it like, being so connected to nature?"

I looked up for a moment, condidering his question. "Well... you always feel... healthy. Well, like, everything is your friend... except monsters. Being a child of Pan, and special for me and my sister, being from the past, it's just so different," I answered.

"Healthy. Everything's your friend. That sounds nice," Hal commented, smiling. "That sounds really nice. So, how long have you been at this camp? Personally, I've been kicking around here for a full seven years."

I laughed, and also considered that question. Time was a fuzzy thing for me, since I'm supposed to be about fifty, not sixteen. "Two months? At the most," I said finally.

Hal nodded. "So you're new here? Well, allow me to formally welcome you to Camp Half-Blood. In case you were wondering, this place rocks, despite a few minor issues, so don't worry." The son of Hephaestus chuckled, showing off his two missing teeth--the one defect of his appearance that makeup and hairstyling couldn't cover up. His facial bruise was hidden, his unruly mane trimmed.

I almost burst into a fit of giggles when he smiled. Not the kind of giggling to make someone feel bad, just that it looked a little goofy. And a little cute. I smiled, my face a bit red from the strain of hiding a laugh. "Thank you," I said.

Despite her best efforts, Hal noticed Fauna's attempt to conceal her amusement. He quickly switched to a closed-mouth smile--although because he was embarrassed.
"It's the teeth, isn't it? Yeah, it's gotta be the teeth," said the son of Hephaestus good-naturedly. "Don't worry about it--I've seen myself when I smile. It does look funny."

I frowned a bit at his comment. "Oh no, no! It's not that it looks bad! It's just... different. It tells me that you can be tough as well as kind."

Hal blushed in spite of himself. "Aw come on, that's nothing at all. I knocked those two out when I fell off a ladder, not when I fought off a bunch of hellhounds or a gang of muggers or anything. It's not that tough--not compared to some of my friends."

I shrugged and tried to smile reassuringly. "It doesn't matter. I bet you've done some very brave things in your life. And if you haven't, I'm sure you will soon enough," I said.

Hal blushed a little bit harder, although he willed himself to calm it down. To tell the truth, he'd never gotten compliments from a girl like this. Sure they had admired his metalworking before (and sometimes his muscles), but never anything really sincere. This felt...different.
"Uh, yeah, thanks," Hal said. "I've uh, not gotten that before. From anyone."

I smiled again, but not reassuingly. More... sincerly. "Well, it's an honor to be the first," I said. "And who knows? Maybe you'll get it froma thousand people in the future, but I can always have the honor of saying that I was the first."

At this Hal ducked his head a bit, trying to hide a slowly spreading grin. "Oh, come on. What are you trying to do, make my face turn red? Cause I have to admit, you're getting there."
The song on the dance floor changed to a funky, hip hop beat, and Hal instantly began nodding his head. "Aw yeah, I love this one."

I laughed, and smiled widely. When the song came up, and Hal said he liked it, rather boldly, I got up. I wasn't as good of a dancer as Fae, but I could still dance. I grabbed his arm and asked, "Care to dance?" I knew as I said it, I was going to make a complete fool of myself.

Hal was somewhat taken aback--again, no girl had ever asked him to dance. He wasn't very good at it either, not horrible, but certainly not great. However, being as upbeat as he was, he decided to just go with the flow.
"Sure. Long as you don't mind two hundred and ten pounds stepping on your toes from time to time," Hal replied with a chuckle.

I laughed... a true laugh that time. I was honestly having a good time. I grabbed his hand tentatively, and walked out onto the floor. I started to dance, not failing completely... yet. I smiled at the pure joy of it all.

When most people danced, they typically focused on their partner. Hal took another approach--he focused on enjoying the music, and for him, dancing with a girl was hardly different from moving his own body to a song that he liked. A natural series of movements. Since he loved this hip hop track immensely, his dancing was also quite good, smooth with no mistakes.

I marveled at how Hal danced. He really wasn't bad. We danced until the song was over, and I blushed. I had never really danced with a guy before. Well, actually, I had never even gone out on a date. I didn't know if this counted as a date, but I hoped it did.

"Man, I do love that song," Hal remarked as he and Fauna sat back down. "You know, I don't even think I stepped on your toes. That's a new record."
The son of Hephaestus chuckled. "Been to many balls like this before?"

I shook my head quietly. I smoothed out my dress, and listened quietly to the songs. A song just started that I actually liked from this time. Telephone by Lady GaGa. I reached for Hal's hand, and asked, "Mind if we dance to my favorite?"
