Kayla Debacker

Kayla looked over her shoulder as she ran through the forest.  The girl was hopelessly lost in the forest, and there were monsters all around that would just love to have some demigod for a pre-Christmas snack. The girl had changed before coming out here, wearing her white peacoat, leggings, and her winter boots. All of it was white, save for the black lining on her coat and her leggings were black as well. Even as the demigod ran, her sword was forming in her hand from the ice crystal necklace she had taken off and was currently holding. She had to get back, but with the darkness around her, and the constant tripping over tree roots as she ran; Kayla began to doubt that would happen. Ever.

She was so stupid for ever coming out here. The girl; in her anger over Cas being his jerk self and pushing off when she had tried to help him be happy, after she had already helped him when he had passed out mind you, had somehow decided that he would probably be in the forest in camp this night which was nearly two weeks after she had met him. The girl had wanted to find the self-centered jerk and give him a good slap for being a jerk. Now she was hopelessly lost and hoping to find some way out, she was tired, and some monster(s) seemed to be hunting her as well. She needed somebody, anybody to help her.

Being lost in that reflection on the events leading up to her little situation, Kayla didn't see the log coming until she tripped over it. This sent her tumbling over the edge of a small cliff, only about 5 feet high. But still, the girl wasn't able to control her fall as she tumbled head over heels and landed on her left arm. A sickening echoed as the bone broke. Kayla yelped loudly with pain. All around her she was aware of the pile of branches she had managed to land in, which tore her clothing and opened cuts all along her pale skin. She must have looked like a beat up mess, the girl knew it. At that same moment the girl felt another flash of pain as something grabbed her leg and began to pull her. She screamed for help loudly, tears in her eyes as the monster that had taken her leg into its mouth began to drag her towards it's lair, where Kayla knew she would die. The demigod clawed at the ground to try to stop the momentum,  and grab her sword laying just out of her reach. She couldn't focus past the pain to use her ice powers, and her kicks at the beast had no affect. Worst of all, the oppressing darkness yielded no visual of the monster. Kayla had no idea what kind of beast was about to claim her life. She was terrified, more scared than she had been nearly a year ago during the New Year's attack. She screamed another cry for help, hoping her desperation fueled her screams to be loud enough for somebody, anybody to come help her.

don't worry. my standards are so high even i don't meet them.
Winter in the forest was frigid and fresh, and the scents of the night lingered like evaporating peppermint. Conrad liked it when it was quiet, and the forest was just that. During the few months of hibernation, the forest was silent as a grave, and interrupted only by the occasional soft thump as a tired bough slid off the heavy clouds of white that had gathered on it. Gone were the sounds of pattering feet and rustling leaves. Only the occasional hoot of owls remained, and movements of hidden things that were more than just mere animals.

Conrad had entered the forest to clear his mind for one reason, and perhaps, look for some activity. Unusual for campers to venture into such a monster-infested area past midnight, but then again, he wasn't the usual camper. There was nothing in that forest that Conrad felt he couldn't handle—such was his confidence.

He was, in fact, trying his hand at tracking a monster, which earlier that afternoon had chased three demigods back into camp. The only information they had gathered before running for their lives was that the creature was fast, quiet, and very vicious. Conrad had yet to identify the monster, but he was sure he could figure it out. His mind had never failed him yet. The first thing, of course, was to find tracks. The forest floor was carpeted by a blanket of white, very white, snow. It glistened through the worn paths and at some places, reflected the bright moonlight so that it blinded watching eyes. Dropping on one knee onto the ground, Conrad pressed the fingers of his right hand into the the cold flakes, sinking them in deep and extending his mind's reach into the surface and beneath.

Suddenly, the son of Athena winced as a piercing scream cut through the clearing. Suppressing a sigh, he pulled his hand free and shook it dry. So much for quiet. Conrad turned to the source of the cry and headed towards it immediately, his sneakers getting damper with every step in the hard, cold snow. Help those who call for help, right? It had better not be another Cyclops. Conrad was getting tired of those pretenders.

Kayla Debacker

Kayla screamed for help the whole time the monster was dragging her, and her screams only picked up when noticed the blood in the snow from where a couple of the more stern twigs had pierced her. Eventually the monster, whatever it was, got annoyed with the girl and turned hit her on the head with something that felt like a hoof. Knocking the girl unconcious and cutting her off mid scream. The sound of her head getting hit echoed off the trees and through the forest. The girl's head fell to the ground as her eyes closed, her tears still running down her face.

It was warm, and she was bent over. She could feel her hair falling past her face. As Kayla slowly came to, these were the first thoughts through her mind. Slowly her eyes opened and she saw that she was suspended in mid air. Held up by a rock structure that she was draped over. The girl thought that this was going to be how she died.

Conrad quickened his pace further as the screams got more intense, reverberating throughout the forest. The trees got thicker and thin branches whipped at his neck and hands. Just as he approached a rocky hill, the screaming cut off abruptly. But Conrad didn't need directions anymore.

He stopped as the line of trees receded to form a sort of curve around the forbidding rock structure. It was not very high, but it exhibited an air of gravity unlike any other monster lair Conrad had seen before. In the middle of the wall of gray stones, he finally found what he was looking for. There was a a dark opening that whistled softly as the winds danced to and fro, singing a shrill, lonely melody on the cold, cluttered stonework. Conrad took in the multitude of scratches on the base of the entrance, the feather or two that fluttered in the breeze near the snowy ground, the size and location of the lair itself—and it all made sense to him.

A Gryphon. Of course. One of the rare monsters that were actually intelligent and didn't usually prey on campers, or humans in general. This Gryphon however, was obviously straying from normalcy. Maybe it was hungry, maybe it was something else. Conrad didn't particularly want to kill it, but it seemed to be at the start of terrorizing the camp. With Kronos arisen and the battle and everything, they didn't need the risk of more diverting trouble.

Then he suppressed an annoyed hiss. The three campers earlier that day were all oh it was fast, it was deadly, I couldn't see it there were too many trees, but it was fast and deadly—they didn't once mention that it could fly. What incompetency.

Letting his consciousness reach out, Conrad surveyed a little into the cave. There was a camper in there all right, and he could just identify her exact location. But the Gryphon was in there as well, and he didn't know was it was doing. Conrad couldn't risk it harming the camper before he took it out. The most efficient way was to attack and draw the creature out with a distraction while the girl made her own escape, because it would ultimately be stupid to go in the cave only to have the Gryphon cut you off from the entrance and end up fighting your way out in utter darkness.

First, however, Conrad needed to make sure that the camper was conscious and alive. He mentally reached to where he had felt the camper before and prodded at her mind. Are you awake? Just think your words, I can hear you. And all the while, Conrad contemplated the best way to stage an effective offense.

Kayla Debacker

Kayla looked around suddenly at the feeling of somebody else talking within her mind. Who are you? Are you here to help me? It caught me by surprise. I'm scared. The girl thought as she swung here head back and forth trying to find the source of the thoughts touching her mind. At her new motion the Gryphon turned towards the girl ready to attack. As it lunged Kayla screamed and the sound of a monster slamming something hard echoed throughout the chamber. Kayla opened her eyes to see an ice wall, which was cracking, between her and the monster. It stumbled back and screeched at her. Kayla knew she didn't have the energy for another ice wall...

The moment Conrad heard the girl's first sentence, he withdrew the touch of his mind and focused on the rocks piled up on the stoney hill. Just as he telekinetically loosened a few of the larger cobbles, lifting them vertically up and directly above the cave, a huge thud echoed out from the chamber, followed by a series of cracks. Ice splinters flew from the mouth of the cave. Khione registered in his mind, but Conrad focused and the rocks rose steadily higher.

A second later, he released his hold on them and they dropped, well, like stones, shaking the cave and threatening the foundation of the hill. The wall of rocks groaned at the sudden pressure, joints cracking. Conrad had already searched the cave with his mind and far as he could tell, there was only one Gryphon in the cave, so there was no danger of multiple monsters coming out. He hoped that the camper had the sense to run.

A small cave in was occurring in the lair, and as Conrad expected, there was a flurry of movement as the Gryphon gave a screech, launching itself out of the cave mouth and into the harsh moonlight. There, out in the open, he saw a majestic creature of bird and mammal scrambling to finding the source of the disturbance. As it focused its fierce eyes on him, Conrad got his first clear and long-awaited look at the Gryphon.

It was the front of an eagle and the hind of a lion. It had an eagle's head, coupled with an eagle's eyes and an eagle's signature cruel, curved beak. Its ears however, were like a cat's, but feathered like a bird. Right now, they and all their feathers flattened and quivered in fury. Two wings lay folded along its flanks, the colour of dark silver moss. As the Gryphon bent down to pounce, Conrad caught sight of muscular hind-legs that lay under a rippling coat of glimmering bronze fur, and the tail that swished behind its butt body. Though somewhat more diminished compared to a Sphinx, Conrad considered it one of the more beautiful creatures that roamed the demigod world. It was truly a symbol of power and intellect.

It was also about to eat him.

Kayla yelped as the cave suddenly started to shutter and the thing holding her up gave way. The girl fell and hit the ground hard. After hitting the ground however, the girl realized that she had to get out. She limped outside with as much speed as she could muster between the blood loss as well as the wave of being tired that passed straight through her. She could feel her leg dragging slightly and knew that something had happened, most likely she had pulled it or something. As she slowly emerged to the outside and saw the night sky, then the boy engaging the gryphon.

For a moment, they stared into each other's eyes, creature and demigod, then the Gryphon pounced with an ear-piercing screech. Conrad threw himself out of the way, landing on his side before rolling and coming up in a kneeling position. Once again, for too many a time, the thought that he should have brought a sword flitted through his mind. It would have made things easier. But Conrad didn't take the easy way. Besides, he had always managed to get out of scrapes without a physical weapon—and he knew he could do it again.

Out of the corner of his eye, Conrad noticed the girl dragging herself out of the cave, but as the Gryphon took a swipe at him, he returned to his own situation. Taking a few careful steps back so that there was distance between them, the son of Athena started circling the Gryphon. Instinctively, the creature followed, matching the change of distance accordingly but in the opposite direction. In the next few seconds, Conrad maneuvered it so that he was closer to the camper. They were only a yard or two away from each other now, but so was the Gryphon, which was inching ever closer.

Another distraction, then. Of course, Conrad's first thought was leverage. After all, weren't Gryphons referred to as protectors? Even carved into statues which were placed before important buildings? But they didn't just protect churches or mansions or museums. That was ridiculous. That was human self-centeredness, thinking they could simply use any animal's spirit for their own benefit. Gryphons guarded treasure, and not just any treasure. They guarded their own treasure.

Lifting a hand slowly, the son of Athena made a swiping motion, pulling on the contents of the deep cave and sending them hurtling out into the wintry open. Rock and ice fragments came flying through the air, hitting the Gryphon which Conrad had conveniently lured into standing directly opposite the entrance of the cave. Then came the actual cache. Coins, gauntlets, swords, sheets of armour, all gleaming a bright gold in the pale moonlight emerged from the opening. Conrad sent them rushing upwards into the night sky. The Gryphon made a sort of choking noise, as if it didn't know whether to be furious or anguished, then launched itself upwards and into the air, towards its dispersed hoard.

Immediately, Conrad darted to the girl, aware of her injured leg though there was no time to heal it now. He opted for the fastest method. "Can you run? We have to get to the trees."

Kayla looked at the boy who saved her and shrugged a little bit. "I don't know but I can try." She says softly and grab's the boy's wrist with her good arm. "In case I start falling behind" She explains to him without waiting to see if he was going to even ask her why. Kayla watched the boy in front of her, she was ready to go, but at the same time felt like she would collapse and pass out from blood loss at any given moment. The girl hated that feeling and was hoping that if she was going to collapse, then she needed to be as far away from the monster as possible.

Conrad took one look at the pain in the girl's eyes and knew that she would be needing a lot more than just a guide. He adjusted his pose, then deftly shifted her good arm up around his shoulders and secured it with one hand. At the same time, Conrad reached around her waist with his other hand to complete the support. It was standard first aid they taught at camp for assisting injured companions.

Aware of the pieces of gold thudding to the ground behind them, and the shrieks of the distressed Gryphon, Conrad's sense of urgency rose. They had to reach an area with many trees and narrow pathways so that the creature could not follow them.

"Come on," he said in low tones, carefully directing their way back into the thicker parts of the forest.

Kayla looks at the boy as he adjusts her arm around his shoulders and she nods in thanks. "The faster we get out of the better." She says and moves as fast she can. Grunting in pain as she limped along with the boy. Up ahead the girl saw an ice crystal laying on the ground and recognized it instantly. "My Sword! Please grab it. It doesn't magically come back to me" She says as she notices it happened to be near a big line of trees. Which was probably their best bet of survival anyways, so getting her sword should be doable. Kayla grunted out pain as she moved towards the sword the whole time and muttered multiple curses that would probably get her slapped by any normal mortal for such foul language. All of them were directed at the Gryphon, her stupidity, and Cas for being such a jerk and making her try to find him to slap him.

They walked and limped in that fashion at a quicker pace than Conrad had expected. It was worrying, unable to move freely while a danger was at their backs, but he focused his efforts on getting them to safety.

The girl started muttering and Conrad raised a brow slightly at the words she uttered, though he made no comment. Then he noticed what the camper was attempting to do despite her injury and said with uncharacteristic reassurance, "It's okay, I'll get it." As they passed the line of trees into a safer zone, the crystal rose steadily and followed their path in midair.

Knowing that campus was too far away to walk in this manner, Conrad maneuvered the girl towards a break in the line of shrubs where a gnarly tree stood thicker than normal. At the foot of the tree were bleached, twisted roots which formed a sort of uneven platform that sat a little higher than the ground. All covered in snow, of course, but that was easily dealt with. The son of Athena gave it a look and the powdery snow threw themselves aside in a hurry, leaving the roots bare and dry.

"Rest here first, we need to see to your leg."

Kayla sighed aloud as she sat down on the exposed tree, as flares of pain shot up her leg and her broken arm (which she had tried to use to lower herself down) in protest to her efforts. As she raised her right leg, the material on her pants fell away so that she only had just enough remaining to cover her undergarments. Seeing as the rest had been torn up during her fall or by the Gryphon. She groaned aloud at the sight of one of her favorite pieces of clothing falling apart like that and looked at the boy. "How bad is it? I know my arm's broken but what about my leg?" The daughter of Khione says through a grunt of pain.

The sword in it's crystal form dropped to the ground beside them. As the girl extended her leg, Conrad knelt to inspect the deep gashes inflicted by the Gryphon's sharp claws. Sticky rivulets of crimson flowed down profusely, but Conrad could see that the bleeding was already slowing due to the freezing air. A light frown crossed his face. The claws definitely tore into the calf muscle.

"The cuts are muscle-deep, but not to the bone. You're lucky, there's no sign of ruptured arteries and the bleeding has almost stopped." Conrad paused as something else registered. "They'll have to be washed first."

He stood up, brushing new flakes of snow from his sleeve. It had started snowing again. Small, cold crystals of white floated down from all around. The thousands of branches in the trees above hindered their progress a little, so that only a little more than half of the falling flakes joined their companions on the ground. The son of Athena reached out a hand and gathered some of the the descending crystals in a swirling flurry, as if summoning a mini blizzard. When they were massed enough to fill a bowl of water, he increased the temperature of the snow, melting the whirling ivory into a warm, spinning disk of fluid vapour.

Conrad then reworked the water into a shifting sphere of water that hovered patiently in the air. Moonlight refracted through the clear liquid, casting dapples of light on tree trunks and fallen twigs and recesses in the snow where there should have only been shadow. Dropping on one knee again, Conrad gently directed a channel of the tepid water onto the girl's wounds to clean out any grime. Streaks of russet ran down her leg, dripping onto her ruined clothing and staining the carpet of pale white.

Conrad was surprised at his own initiative. A year ago, he would likely have left the camper sitting there after he had helped her out of danger, deeming it her own fault for getting into this mess. Besides, she could walk back anyway, even if it was a slow going. Living at Camp Half-Blood must have influenced him more than he thought.

As he worked, he asked absently, "Did you bring any nectar?"

Kayla nodded and began searching the pockets on her coat, to her pleasure she soon found the pocket that she had left some nectar and ambrosia in. She pulled them both out and set them down next to her where the boy could see them. As he cleaned her wounds, Kayla held back small cries of pain. It hurt but Kayla was not about to attract the monster again. She watched the boy, being thankful that he had helped her. "Thank you, I mean it. I would have been dead if not for you." She whispered awkwardly. Then girl was beginning to sway a little bit, the blood loss making her woozy and closer than ever to passing out.

Conrad finished the washing and removed the water quickly before the cold air froze the droplets to the camper's skin. Pale fingers closing around the bottle of nectar, he unscrewed the cap and started carefully applying the golden liquid on the dull red gashes. Almost immediately, they started to close, the muscle knitting back together. As Conrad poured the last dregs of nectar, he realised that there wasn't enough to heal the wounds completely. Long pinkish streaks still remained, but the wounds had closed, seemingly weeks old instead of just inflicted.

"You're welcome," he replied automatically. "And yes you would have." His characteristic directness was seeping back again. A slight crease formed between his brows. "What exactly were you doing out in the forest in the middle of the night?" Conrad held back the words if you couldn't cope, recalling from experience that it was not something to say in polite conversation if the sensitivity level of the other party hasn't been determined yet.

Then he noticed the girl's dizziness and looked right into her eyes to keep her awake and focused. It was at that point Conrad recalled the name and cabin that went with her face. She was Kayla Debacker, from cabin sixteen, which he had just found out earlier and now accurately cross-referenced it to a match in his memory. Not that he would give any indication of knowing.

Kayla looked at the boy in front of her, then past him as she finally seemed to notice the snow. She moved forward a little bit after the nectar had been applied to let the cold and snow fall on her. The cold always helped her feel better, probably a side affect from who her mother was. Kayla brought a hand to her forehead and shook her head. Obviously ashamed at herself. "I came out here to try to find Cas. I'm mad at him because I tried to be nice to him and he was a total jerk and I was gonna... I don't know. I regret it. I know what you were going to say, something about why would I come out here if I couldn't handle it, right? I thought I was strong enough after all that training I did. Guess I'm not strong enough. Look let's get back to camp, I don't want waste your time anymore than I have too. You probably got better things than almost dying or helping a girl who almost died" She said with a sad half-smile the girl's self confidence issues were showing. Although even as she said this and looked at the boy, her eyes showed no desire for pity.

See, Warrington? Conrad congratulated himself dryly. This is what comes of being chatty. You get to listen to someone's entire life story. These biting reflections were normal for him, a perfect match for his stoic personality, and so his expression remained unrevealing of any thoughts as he listened to the girl's monologue. Conrad slowly capped the now empty bottle and set it on the snow where it sat before.

Then sensing the girl's shame, he didn't really know what to say. On one hand, he had no idea how to comfort someone, on the other, he felt annoyed at even thinking he should. Emotions were pathetic, so Conrad pushed them aside. He had felt enough concern for one night. The afterhours were always different from daytime. It was as if the corporeal darkness was a subconscious cloak over things that light habitually revealed and held in disdain.

Tilting his head slightly to the side, the typical careless, sardonic glint that the son of Athena was so renowned for came back into his eyes. "You don't have to explain yourself. People mistake that for self-pity." Conrad considered her last statement before replying matter-of-factly, "As it happens, you led me to the very thing I came out to find."

Changing the subject, he picked up the ambrosia and tossed it onto Kayla's lap. "Also, you had better eat this."

Kayla listened to the boy and nodded whenever he threw the ambrosia bag into her lap. "Yeah, that's probably a smart idea" She says with a small smile. Opening up the small bag and taking a little bit of the ambrosia out. Careful to not grab too much. Kayla wasn't exactly in the mood for burning up today. She had enough pain for the day. After she ate for a little bit Kayla noticed the shadow behind the other camper seemed to be moving slightly. "I think it followed us." The girl whispered softly. Leaning forward and reaching out to slowly turn the boy's face towards the monster. Hopefully she moved slow enough so the beast would not take notice that they had noticed it yet. Kayla looked at her ice crystal on the ground. Knowing if the beast attacked she had to move fast to get it.

The first thing he noticed was Kayla's eyes, which seemed to be tracking something behind him. Conrad assumed the worst and was starting to get a little irritated. Was there no end to this monster trouble? He knew it had to be some other creature for anything the Gryphon's size could not possibly have fit through the gaps between the trees. Unless it were to plow into them and knock them down, which would obviously have made a lot of noise. Conrad wouldn't have stopped there otherwise. Still, he kept his voice low. "Don't be rid—" He got only a momental indication before the girl reached up.

In a sudden but short movement, that it could've been missed by anyone standing farther away, Conrad grasped her wrist and stopped her hand just before her fingers touched his face. There was a closed, wary expression on his defined features and his slate gray eyes held an intense measure of warning. It was actually mostly instinct. Either way, he wasn't used to unwarranted physical contact. Conrad released his hold, expression unchanged.

Straightening up carefully but still facing the tree Kayla had her back to, he extended the radius of his mental reach, but could find nothing substantial. So there was only one likely possibility.

"Stand up," Conrad commanded quietly. "Can you fight, or run?"

Kayla stood up slowly and grabbed her ice crystal which formed instantly into a sword covered in frost. "I'm going to fight" She said, glaring into the darkness as she watched the movements. At that moment a loud screech was heard and the shadow rushed forward, the loud smashing of trees echoing through the clearing. The Gryphon was coming straight for Conrad, full speed and aiming to kill. Without even a moments hesitation, Kayla thrust her arms out. Out here she was much stronger than before, the cold, the moisture in the air, and already present ice and snow making this fight take place in home court for the girl. A thick sheet of ice appeared below the Gryphon. Though it soon formed into a ramp. When the Gryphon hit this patch it went down hard and screeched as it slid off the ramp and into a nearby boulder where it was laying, dazed. Kayla looked at Conrad then back at the Gryphon. She heft ed her sword up and got ready to fight
