alone (jess and wicked)

Kellie stayed in the back corner of the room, watching campers arrive, dressed in what seemed like their best. She herself wore a black lace dress that she had had forever. James, her murderous father, had bought it for her as a funeral present and she had worn it ever since to parties, even to prom. Mostly it was because she had nothing else nice to wear, but it reminded Kellie of the daddy she used to have, before he went all crazy and killed Kathryn. She one day hoped that if she held onto this dress and cried over it enough times, that James would come back to her, normal. On her feet were black flats she wore all around camp, they were quite worn and faded, and there were light grey spots where sequins used to be but had long since fallen off. Those Kellie had bought herself, with her own money. She had a fabric flower pinned in her hair, the color of ash. And really, the only thing different about Ghost Girl tonight was that she had, for the first time since prom, wore makeup. Kellie's red hair was pulled back into a bun, but some of her thick hair hung down in elaborate ringlets. Tonight, she was sparkling.

Then Kellie looked at her pale hands, which werethe color of snow. She twisted the pink gemstone ring on her finger, humming along to the words of the song. The Fray was her favorite band, next to Green Day of course. Ever since that fateful night, their lyrics had always spoken to the girl, and she buried herself into listening to every song that was available to her. She swayed gracefully to the music, like a ghost. No one noticed Kellie for the most part, and that was fine with her. John, her boyfriend, was somewhere else. She needed sometime apart from him. As much as Kellie loved John, he could be a bit clingy and over protective, but that was mostly because she had summoned spirits from the underworld on their first date. He was worried about her. Kellie could understand that. But sometimes to much looking after made a person a bit crazy.

The truth was, Kellie was happy being alone. She was used to it. With no friends in the world, you didn't miss human companionship. She eyed a nearby table, where her thick book lie on the table, its cover flipping up and down, as if whispering to her to come and have Kellie read it. But she didn't. It was rude to read and be reclusive during a party, Ghost Girl knew that much. Every boy and girl went past Kellie, chattering away and not even acknowledging the pale and ghostly girl. But one boy with Grey vans came over and stood by her and like everybody else, didn't bother to say hello. Kellie wasn't much for conversation, so she just stood there, mouthing the words to the song and scanning the others with her chocolate brown eyes.
