| June Prenston ♣ -- ares June shuffled through the crowd of rowdy party goers after having decided long ago that she was the only one not shoving food into her mouth. A pig was being spun on a stick next to the food table, and it made her feel a little proud—Ares liked boars, right? There appeared to be a table of alcohol hidden somewhere nearby, but June hadn't gone looking for it, finding that the only kids who should be drinking during the party were the Dionysus children. They could handle beer. The other drunk and out of control kids didn't appear to have very high alcohol tolerance.
One boy stumbled in front of June and blocked her path, so impatiently, June strode past him, searching the crowd for someone inparticular. The farther she got away from the roasting pig, the less idiots she ran into, though it had gotten quite dark, even under the lights strung across the volleyball pit. "Caleb?" June shouted, stopping abruptly and spinning in a tight circle. There were too many people. Maybe going to the party in the first place was a bad idea. It was dangerous for the both of them, but at least in the giant crowd Ares wouldn't mess with him. His demon spawn June wasn't so sure about.
She'd been avoiding her siblings all day, but that would be merely impossible in the large crowd. Ares got around, or at least he must have. He seemed to have millions of children, and the majority of them hated June and her friend, Caleb Wright, a critical but brainy son of Momus. That was who June was desperately searching for. It shouldn't have been hard to find the cripple, but she wasn't even sure if Caleb was still using his crutches. She hadn't seen him in roughly 20 hours, and he hadn't liked those immobile-making leg casts. Who knew how insane Caleb could be when making decisions.
Basically, June wasn't sure what kind of boy she was looking for, but she wanted to see him more than anything.
Impatiently, June began running back through the crowd, back into the life of the party, before a strong hand grasped her shoulder. Believing it was Caleb, June turned around excitedly. "Kni—oh. Hello Peter." Though she should have been trembling at the sight of her brawny older brother, she stood firmly, remembering the bravery she used to always walk with. "Could you let go of me? I don't want to catch your ignorance." Peter only grinned at June and tightened his grip on the same sensitive shoulder that weeks ago had been struck by an arrow. "Seriously, eff off." June grabbed Peter's wrist, but he shook off her weak grip.
"Looking for that son of Momus? You know I can't let you do that. He's bad news, you're bad news, and Dad hates you both." Peter rolled his eyes at June's attempt to sneak away again, and the daughter of Ares eventually wound up bringing her knee to Peter's stomach while he rambled. She snaked away from him, then took off in a sprint through the crowd, faking a smile and she caught sight of a few familiar faces, none of them Caleb. He was the only person June cared to see, especially after her very recent encounter with Peter. They would be left alone together, but apart, anything could happen to either of them.
Once the crowd grew too thick for even the small girl to navigate effortlessly, June slowed to a walk, still scanning each face carefully. "Knives?" she shouted again, furrowing her brows helplessly. This was exactly why social gatherings sucked. There were too many people, but as soon as she found her friend, June expected to relax a little bit. "Caleb? It's June!"
Angrily, June stomped away from the crowd, standing just a few feet away from most of the group. There she rooted her feet defiantly, still trying to catch sight of Cripple Sticks. "Oh yum, food." June's eyes lit up at the sight of snacks, but she didn't let herself budge, determined to meet up with her best friend before going anywhere, secretly afraid of running into Peter again if she did.

Caleb still couldn't believe how he had gotten roped into this.
Maybe he had been too tired that night to process June's request. Too tired to figure out the consequences behind their decision to meet once more. Sleepily, Caleb brought a hand up to rub his still sleepy eyes. He promised himself that he won't ever keep himself up until around three in the morning again. Not that he wasn't used to staying up late, but he could count on one hand how many times he kept his eyes open until after twelve. Grumbling something about being an early bird in the mornings, Caleb tensed his jaw as he limped to the supposed party, nose already wrinkling at the prospect of a social gathering. He already knew that something bad was about to happen here. He got a feeling in his bones. He had briefly considered not going, but the thought of leaving the daughter of Ares all alone in there was too much to bear. Not to mention that June would probably kick his ass if he stood her up. Due to the circumstances, Caleb couldn't deny that he'd be helpless if that ever happened.
Just as he neared the site, Caleb paused to lean against the post in the volleyball pits. He gripped his crutch tightly, barely registering the hollow sort of numbness and pain coming from his lower extremities. He got the casts taken off, even if it was still way early for that. Ambrosia and nectar can work wonders, and he had persuaded some of the older Apollo kids to give him more of the standard dosage. The risk paid off in the end, and Caleb could've sworn that disappointed looks plagued the healers' faces when he didn't burst into flames from overdose. Caleb allowed his lips to twist into a smug smirk at the thought.
He could hear music blaring from the party site and frowned. Why did people like that kind of noise? Caleb had yet to understand how having to shout at the top of your lungs to make yourself heard amidst the music equated to fun. Heaving a deep sigh, he proceeded to draw circles on the dirt using his only crutch to distract himself. He had no intention of searching for June in the crowd. The action would only bring forth harm to either of them, especially with the war god spawns prowling about. No, he best stay here in the volleyball pit, hoping that she at least had some sense to look for him in the area surrounding the pig roast. As if he would ever join the party crowd anyway.
The son of Momus tuned out the whispering and laughing behind his back as demigods passed. He recognized some of the faces to be ones he had wronged before, and now they were paying back the favor in kind. A few took the trouble of shouting scathing insults at him as they walked by. Caleb only replied to these with a smug smirk, unnerving them because of how eerily calm he seemed despite his current situation. They knew nothing.
"Come on, Prenston," he muttered to himself, looking up to scan his nearly bare surroundings. He grew restless, wanting to just enter the party and look for the girl himself. Agitatedly brushing some of his hair away from his eyes, Caleb sucked in a deep breath of air and dug the stick in the dirt, propelling himself to move towards the party. Come what may, he thought. Ares could send all his demented children raging at him if he liked. He just needed to find the daughter of Ares asap.
The whispers intensified as more knowing looks got thrown his way as he entered the outer circle of the ongoing party. They were just insignificant little ants with nothing better to talk about, he told himself. He would've loved to give each of them a smirk but he knew that he should focus on the task at hand. He must find June. His resolve strengthened even more as he took every limping step, eyes darting around for any sign of the wavy-haired girl. Where was she? Knowing her, he knew that she must be weaving in and out of the crowd, looking for him too. Caleb gritted his teeth. At this rate, the night will end without any of them catching even a glimpse of the other. Was this perhaps another of Ares' plans?
As he neared the snack bar, Caleb suddenly stopped in his tracks, growing aware of the gaze of a muscular boy gazing intently at him. As soon as their eyes met, the boy turned white-faced and his features contorted into a scowl. Not knowing whether to attribute his paleness to fear or sheer anger, Caleb smirked at him, having some sort of inkling on who the guy was. Seething, the brawny boy walked over to him, all the while cracking his knuckles and making the muscles on his arms bulge through the fabric of his shirt. "Looking for my sister, huh, punk?" the kid said, eyes narrowing dangerously. "She's not here. Why doncha scram, before I give you much more to worry about than a pair of useless legs?"
Unfazed, Caleb tilted his head to the side and gave him a challenging look. He knew better than to believe his words. "Still haven't changed, Peter? Why don't you go home and kiss your daddy's feet while you're at it?" Caleb's fingers hovered dangerously close to the hilt of his trusted knife as he observed the boy's face turn scarlet under the colorful party lights. Great, barely five minutes in and he already got himself into some trouble. Never letting his eyes leave the son of Ares, Caleb stood his ground and hoped that June wasn't anywhere nearby. The last thing he needed was to get the girl involved in this.

| June Prenston ♣ -- ares It was just "perfect" luck for Caleb that June happened to be gazing longingly over at one of the long white tables piled high with delicacies, and soon recognized him. The distance between them wasn't too great, so with a dilusional chuckle, June began running towards her friend. She stopped moving abruptly upon noticing Peter. Though the logical part of her brain screamed for June to do something, to warn Caleb, she couldn't move. The ache in her knee was a reminder of why she should be worried.
June shivered upon hearing Peter refer to her as his sister, and cracked her knuckles. She was trying to come up with some sort of plan but couldn't think of anything. How staying silent and observant in the background helped, the daughter of Ares wasn't sure, but it didn't seem like an appropriate time to catch Caleb off guard. His hand was already reaching for his knife. 'She isn't here,' Peter had growled. That was a blunt lie, but something told June that Caleb didn't believe it. He was much smarter than the majority of her siblings, and he knew how their brains worked when harrassing someone. June could honestly say she didn't know what it was like. They were more violent than intimidating when dealing with their sister.
June's heart stopped as her eyes traveled down to Caleb's hand and she caught sight of the knife. No, he wasn't going to get himself in trouble with a weapon, especially on Peter. He could turn everyone in the party even more against Caleb and June then they already were, and it was supposed to be just that, a party. Impulsively, June strode behind Caleb and rested her hand on his back gently, as to not startle him. "Hey." June spoke to Knives in a friendly tone, but her eyes wandered to Peter, unwilling to let him out of her sight. "Let's go," she mumbled, a scowl plastered across her face.
She didn't want a fight then. On another night, June would have already made some sort of move, but it was the first social gathering she had attended since arriving at camp, and it seemed like others were actually having a good time. "Don't get too drunk, Peter. It'd be pretty easy to fall off a cliff." June spun on her heels and latched her arm in Caleb's, wanting to steer him away from Peter and into the crowd, where they could disappear. Out of the corner of June's eyes, she could see Peter shifting uncomfortably, probably waiting for Caleb to do something. June herself was eager to see what kind of mood her friend was in that night. He wasn't using crutches, which was odd, but somewhat expected.
"He's not worth it," June whispered, standing on her tiptoes so that she was even with Caleb's ear. "You're not going to risk getting Ares worked up just for knifing scuff like Peter." June attempted a reassuring and understanding smile, but it came off as more of a grimace. Her wrist was burning and bright red because of Peter's powerful grip. She hadn't been aware of exactly how tightly her sibling had been gripping her over on the volleyball courts, but now the stinging was a reminder. She felt much more obligated to steer Caleb away from the trouble as a faint ache developed in the leg she had used to knee Peter.

Someone up there must really hate Caleb to give him the very thing that he hoped wouldn't happen. Oh wait, someone already did. While he was relieved to have finally found the person he was looking for, he certainly wasn't pleased with the fact that she had to come at that very moment. Luckily for him too, considering how he almost did something he would regret later.
Caleb's fingers danced around his knife a few seconds more before he let his hand drop to hook around his pants pocket. With the other hand wrapped around the handle of his crutch, he half-heartedly listened to June as he continued to stare at the son of Ares. The way Peter carried himself seemed almost as if he was waiting for Caleb to make the first move. Before he can act on the impulse, the son of Momus took a deep breath to calm himself. June was right. If he continued on this path, hordes of people would come at him. As much as a scandal would be of some thrill to him, he figured that he shouldn't put both his and June's lives in danger all because of a single careless action on his part. "Drunk or not drunk, it'd be pretty easy for him to fall off a cliff," he muttered under his breath, but with some luck, no one else but June would be able to hear it. Okay, so he couldn't help himself. Perhaps now June can see why he quickly got on her family's and other people's bad sides.
"Got lucky this time around, didn't ya?" Caleb managed to taunt, keeping a smirk up as he reveled in Peter's obvious discomfort. He played a dangerous game here. One slip-up and he might as well be digging his own grave. But then, hadn't that been the whole situation from the start? Before Peter can respond with something less witty, Caleb half-turned to face June, taking a wobbly crutch-supported step to the direction she led him to. "Let's go - "
He cut off as his eyes flickered to the angry blotch of red on June's wrist. "What happened?" he asked urgently, looking up to meet her gaze. Caleb's voice took on an emotionless edge, but he didn't seem to be as good at controlling it than before. It shook a little when he spoke, which was quite uncharacteristic. Because for some reason, Caleb felt angry. Angry that June's wrists bore bright red marks. "Who did this to you?"

| June Prenston ♣ -- ares June relaxed as Caleb let his hand drift away from the knife, though she wasn't sure if she would have stopped him from stabbing Peter. Her indecision likely would have led to more trouble. Peter had a reputation of hiding weapons on him, and if Caleb had revealed the knife, Peter likely would have taken on a sword or spear. June had made the mistake of coming unarmed, and she wouldn't have been much help unless she took a blade from someone else. June had a quite special ability when it came to battle, you see. She can hold a weapon in her hands and almost instantly learn how to fight with it. This doesn't always mean she's good at swinging nun-chucks or shooting an arrow, but it gives her a one up in some cases.
June snorted at Caleb and covered her mouth quickly, an understanding smirk poking into view in the cracks between her fingers. "That's also true. But maybe we'll get lucky and he does just that: falls." June was fine with hurting Peter if she had to, but she wasn't planning on murdering someone that night. She was pretty sure neither her nor Caleb ever had that kind of burden on their shoulders, and there were already too many regrets floating around. June risked a glance over her shoulder, pleased to see that she had been the only one to catch Caleb's comment. Even Peter was trying step closer to hear the pair.
June sighed contently and nodded, though her skin was flaring up. It felt hot enough for someone to burn themselves touching, but of course that was ridiculous. "Yeah, come on . . ." Before June could take another step, she felt Caleb's gaze float to her, so she spun around and met it. Immediately she wished she hadn't. He had seen her arm. How was she supposed to explain that without getting them into trouble? Caleb didn't seem to be taking it lightly. "Don't do this here," June whispered desperately, attempting to tug away from the food table.
'What happened?' June looked away from Caleb, towards the ground, and she sighed. "Nothing. Come on," June looked back up at Caleb and tried to move along, but a part of her wanted to stick around. She wanted to see Peter get it handed to him. At the first thought of her half-brother, June's eyes drifted in his direction, where she caught sight of him snorting and shoving his face with food. When the girl's eyes finally found their way back to Caleb, June realized his voice was shaking. It wasn't out of fear, so what was it? Anger? "It doesn't matter, I'll be fine. Please—"
Peter cut June off, a devilish glint in his small eyes. "No one else's going to take credit? No one? Alright, I guess that means it was me." Peter popped his shirt collar and June rolled her eyes before it hit her. This wasn't going to be pretty.
Grabbing both of Caleb's arms, June winced because of the ache in her shoulder. "And he probably has internal bruises on his stomach. Come on," June wanted to lead Caleb away, but knowing him, she didn't anticipate it being easy. "It's nothing. My shoulder's really much worse. It's nothing." June let her right hand fall, the red one, because it sent a sharp pain through her arm to grab onto her friend. Her eyes were pleading with the boy, trying to stop any impulsive and easily regrettable rage decisions.

For the time being, Caleb forgot that he walked with a limp and a crutch. He forgot that he had just left the infirmary and would be coming back to it before the night was over. Forgot that he was physically inferior to the Ares boy. Hot inexplicable rage flowed through his veins, almost enough to make him see red. He didn't know where this newfound anger came from, just that it was there and ready to fuel him into action. With dangerously narrowed eyes, the son of Momus slowly directed his gaze to the boy currently pigging out in the snack table. You are going down.
"Feeling so cocky now, are we?" he said, the words forced out through gritted teeth. He barely registered June holding his arms down, his fingers finding the rubberized hilt of his electrifying knife. Peter just had enough gall to meet his gaze with a challenging one of his own. The older boy was daring him, and blinded by rage, Caleb almost gave him the exact response he was hoping for. Almost.
Caleb could hear the pleading note in June's voice and he faltered slightly. Didn't she understand? It was wrong for Peter to do that to her. Caleb would make him pay for it. Whoa, since when did he have some straight sense of morality? At that train of thought, the more logical side of the son of Momus awakened, rushing to calm him down. Just in time too. Inhaling deeply as he counted from one to ten in his thoughts, Caleb relaxed his stance and let his hand move away from his weapon. Yes, he was still furious, but that didn't mean that he would act the way Peter wanted him to. That would have been plain foolishness on his part, and Caleb never let himself get away with doing unwise things.
"Count yourself lucky this time, brainless," Caleb muttered venomously, still glaring daggers at the Ares boy. He had himself under control now. No way was he going to let himself respond to Peter's childish antics, no matter how he was provoked. "We're going," he told June, turning away from the scene, walking away as the bigger man.
But Peter had other ideas. Disappointed by how the situation hadn't escalated into a full-blown fight, the son of Ares let out a harsh laugh, before sneering, "What's the matter, Limp Wimp? Too much of a coward to come and fight? Is Cripples so scared?" Peter broke into a fit of hysteria, doubling over when suddenly, a bright red apple came flying at him and connected with his jaw. Snarling, he looked up and saw Caleb, half-turned with his hand outstretched, his lips curled up into his signature smirk.
No, maybe Caleb didn't have as much control on himself than he first thought.

| June Prenston ♣ -- ares June felt like a child, or a dog, allowing Caleb to lead her away when she was supposed to be in charge. Caleb was tall enough to look like a body guard in comparison, and June was small enough to look less like a 15 year old, and more like a squirt. (okay, so this is a bit of an exageration, and anyone looking at June could tell she isn't a kid, but that's how she felt.) For the first time in her life, June was glad that she looked tiny. She wanted to blend in and escape the looks they had started receiving. "Don't," June snapped, wanting Caleb to quit pushing Peter. He really would fall off a cliff, but that would make him lose his mind.
"Oh, piss off, Peter," June groaned as she rolled her eyes. His jeers had been taken personally, especially because the son of Ares didn't know what he was talking about, and June balled her fists tightly. "If you make Dad too happy, he'll grow bored with you, and what other reason do you have to live?" June's voice was edgy, but reserved. She was holding back. She wasn't going to be the one to push too many buttons, at least not with the reminder of his chest pressed against her, the uncomfortable closeness, the surge of fear. June clutched her stomach and moaned quietly, not wishing to draw any attention, but probably failing. A small shiver traveled down her back, and she looked away from Peter. June blocked his voice out of her head and clamped her eyes shut, trying to press to memory of touch out of her head. Why had Peter needed to invade her personal space? Why couldn't have let it stop at the wrist? How could he have known that June hardly ever let anyone touch her?
Did Ares posses an ability to read her fears? Was it another poison effect?
Caleb must have had been angrier than June, because just after the son of Ares stopped talking, she heard the oaf grunt. Instinctively, June pivoted sharply on the souls of her feet and grabbed Caleb's shoulder. "He's going to hurt you now," she hissed, an unmistakeable mix of anger of fear bubbling in her eyes. Other than that, her face had gone pale and tight. She looked much more solid than usual. "Gods, Caleb!" June released her friend's shoulder, but found the already bruised splotch of Peter's chin satisfying. "Are you trying to get yourself killed?"
The discoloration became so satisfying, that she laughed to herself. This wasn't a good move, seeing as Peter was still completely mobile, but she couldn't help the involuntary sneer. Her wobbly brother came charging, and desperately, June grabbed a silver dinner knife off of the table and flung it at his foot with just enough force to impale it. This seemed to distract him, and if she had gotten lucky, with it a large amount of pain. Turning around quickly, the daughter of Ares grabbed for Caleb's free hand, trying to hurry him along. She didn't want to stick around and see where her knife had landed, or to play food fight with her least favorite sibling.
"Peter's just another Ares asshole. Ignore him." June's eyes looked cold, although she felt grateful. He had deserved it. He had deserved worse. A chin for a wrist. That was how the saying went. There was also a chin for a wrist makes the whole world blind, but most violent children didn't live under that motto. "Oh, Caleb?" June was whispering now, trying to remain hushed. "Nice aim."

Caleb noted how June seemed to shiver slightly, most likely from an earlier memory. Frowning, the son of Momus raised his eyebrows at her, wordlessly demanding for answers, but the son of Ares was going way too far. That was when he chucked an apple at the kid's jaw. His aim was a little off though - Caleb meant to hit his eye.
It took Caleb a brief moment to realize the magnitude of what he'd done, and it took more than the beefy son of Ares charging at him to know it. "Oh? I think I've already sentenced myself to death since day one," he said, a little amused at how much June resembled a ghost at the moment. Before he could say anything else, a flash of silver gleamed past but a sudden tug made him turn away before he could see where it landed. Caleb moved as quick as his limp could permit him, thinking it a wise a move to get out of the scene before the son of Ares could retaliate. He did doubt how much time it'd take before he did, maybe as soon as he stopped screaming in pain.
"Kind of big coming from someone who threw a knife at his foot," he responded snarkily. At the compliment, the son of Momus's lips turned up in a half-grin. "Why thank you. I'd say the same to you."
As Peter's voice slowly began to fade, Caleb risked a glance back to see that quite a few people huddled around him. Imagining the blood pooling around his feet from June's attack felt oddly satisfying. Caleb shook his head, only feeling a little disgusted at the turn his thoughts had taken, before shifting his attention back to June. "Why'd you look so scared?" he asked without as much as a second thought. "Peter's only a chip off the old block. You of all people should be able to handle that." | |

| June Prenston ♣ -- ares June looked over at Caleb in time to see him raise his eyebrows at her. He wanted an answer, but June wasn't going to give him one, even if it was her best friend. Maybe later that night, or in a few weeks, or months, or years, when the situation was just a distant memory. That was, if they were alive in a few years, or months, or weeks, or in a few hours. Things had gotten so unpredictable that if June was forced to make a guess, she would assume that they wouldn't be breathing the next day, the way their luck seemed to lean. "Ask again later," June mouthed, a serious expression on her otherwise stoic face.
••• June didn't look back, though she could see Caleb turn. She didn't want to know what was happening behind her, nor did she care to ever find out. She couldn't hear Peter's inaudible screaming anymore, and that was all she had been focusing on. "Maybe we should . . . lay low when we go out in public," June snorted. She was relieved enough to burst into a fit of hysterical laughter, but a few snorts were all she got out before Caleb began asking her the questions she had wanted to put off.
"I didn't look scared," she replied harshly, the sharpness in her tone evident to the deaf. "You're blind, how would you know?" June was angry at everything for the feeling in her stomach, and the blush on her face, and the concern that she didn't care to deal with. She was so angry, she had gone from protective to mean with her best, and only, friend. If you didn't know about June's anger issues, you might think she was acting hormonal.
The red in her face worsened, but June found her power and relaxed. "It's like he knows . . . it's like he was able to find out what scares me. Or makes me uncomfortable . . . I don't know. Something felt wrong. Peter knew where I was. He knew what made me tick." June shook her head, frustrated with how her night was going. She wasn't supposed to be worrying about anything, she was supposed to be hanging out with Caleb, and having a good time. That didn't seem like a possibility anymore. "I'll be fine, follow me. We're getting away from this crowd." June grinned at Caleb and grabbed his hand, stepping ahead of the boy to lead him along. "And this sound. Music my ass."

Caleb held back a scoff. "You think? I'm actually a little surprised at how we managed to get away without exchanging real blows." Well, Peter did end up having a bloody foot and a bruised chin, but the two of them, June and Caleb, left the scene unscathed. While the son of Momus felt incredibly smug at the thought, a little part of him wondered if this was going to be the rest of their lives. Could they enter a sociable scene and walk away without anyone getting hurt, physically or emotionally? No, he thought firmly, convincing himself. This is the path we chose.
The sudden mood shift caused Caleb to tense, but he at least figured that it was a product of June's psychological disorder and anger issues as an Ares child. Or, well, he had heard that teenage girls had very frequent mood changes, so that was a possible reason too. "That's why I have glasses," he tapped the rim of it with two of his fingers. "Haven't you noticed? Maybe you're the blind one here," he drawled sarcastically, an amused glint in his eyes.
Caleb threw June a weird look. "Peter? Are you serious? Haven't you forgotten that he's as dumb as a bag of nails?" True, Caleb might be exaggerating, but still. "You and your imagination never cease to amaze me, Prenston." He breathed a light laugh, shaking his head. June was becoming too paranoid for all of this, he assumed. Caleb refused to believe any other reason. He didn't know how he was shunning every other thing aside, didn't know that June's accusation might just hold true. That he was becoming blind.
"Fine," he muttered under his breath, letting the girl lead him anyway. It was quite hard to keep up (Damn legs couldn't move any faster, he thought), but he at least managed to avoid bumping into every demigod in the way. Well, that part was kind of easy, seeing as most people hastened to move aside as they passed. "I never understand why they find this kind of noise enjoyable. I can barely tolerate it as it is."

| Code: June Prenston ♣ -- ares "If Peter had hurt you, he would have had to answer to me." June's eyes flashedwith an obviously dark and demented idea for punishing her brother. "I am his cabin leader now." June dropped Caleb's hand, sure that he was following her. She wasn't caring much about his injury. Caleb was Caleb. He would be fine. He wasn't one to wine, and he was a big boy. He would be fine.
June dropped her cocky sneer and rolled her eyes at Caleb. "Sorry, I'd rather not put myself at that sort of disadvantage." She didn't mean much that she said to Caleb when teasing him, but it took her mind off of the bloody and bruised Peter they had left behind and reminded June that she was at a party, even if they were pretty much ditching the gathering to go off by themselves. That was how their entires life felt to June. They were with everyone else, but they were alone together as well. An island surrounded by land. Just different enough to be completely shoved aside.
When Caleb took her comment as a joke, June faked a laugh, though it came out very uncomfortable and awkward. "Yup, dumbest knife in the drawer . . . or dullest . . ." June rubbed her eyes and sighed deeply. She couldn't pretend that everything with Peter was something to laugh off. "That's not it, Caleb. Sure, Peter's a dumbass, but Ares isn't." June bit her tongue to keep from saying anything else. She wasn't going to get Caleb worked up. She wanted to have fun. They needed to wait to have this conversation later, if there was going to be a later. "You know what, never mind. You're right, Wright. It's just my crazy imagination." June didn't dare look back at Caleb. She didn't want to face him. Not with the sickening churning in her stomach as she lied to the one person she didn't have to lie to. Caleb would understand, surely, but he didn't seem to get it. Why didn't he get it?
June cracked a grin as she listened to Caleb complain, grabbing his hand once more to steer him through a rather dense group of demigods struggeling to catch the volleyball before it dropped. In a surge of adrenaline, June kicked the ball just before it fell into the open arms of an Apollo or Poseidon looking boy. Damn Apollo kids . . . "Fetch," June barked as she picked up her pace and began jogging away, careful not to lose Caleb in the crowd. (which was thinning as they walked.)
"Not much longer," June assured, tightening her grip around Caleb as the grass grew longer and thicker. The field that connected the sand volleyball courts to the beach and strawberries was a place demigods often didn't go. There was nothing interesting there, and it was completely abandoned the night of the parties. Not even the drunken beach kids wandered aimlessly through the grass. "We can stop here." June was taking charge again, but she didn't care whether Caleb minded or not. She liked having control, and being alone seemed a lot better than being in a crowd. She felt exceptionally close to Caleb, as if the days they had been spending together had been enough to bring back their old friendship, though of course the unanswered questions drove a wedge between the two. June didn't want to leave, but she wasn't sure how she felt about staying around Caleb. Warm, sure. Positive, not really, but June isn't ever positive. Happy, of course. Uneasy, completely. Concerned, definitely.
"My legs hurts. I'm sitting," June scrunched up her face upon remembering who she was talking to about legs, but plopped down anyway. "Oh, sorry, I didn't mean it like that—" Oh, whatever. Caleb would live. "While we're on the topic, mind explaining to me why you have only one crutch and are walking on both of your legs? That can't be good for you." June looked up and down Caleb's body, groaning at the sight of the crutch. Her heart suddenly stopped when she realized they hadn't properly met up. She hadn't gotten a chance to say much to him.
"I'm glad to see that you came," June noted with a dull but warm smile. "Peter's been angrier with me lately than usual, because I outrank him now. Sucks to suck, I guess. I got my own room, too! With a back door. I got some of those Hephaestus kids to cut a hole in my wall, and they did it, just like that! So you can come in if you want, whenever. No infirmary sleepovers, no sleepovers in your cabin, no abandoned cabin sitting. I've got my own place." June seemed genuinely happy as she spoke, forgetting that she was supposed to let Caleb talk. She was excited, but also relieved. Her siblings couldn't push her around anymore, or kill her in her sleep. Her room and new rank solved both of those problems.

Cabin leader? Did June actually say that she was a cabin leader? Caleb didn't notice that she had already let go of his hand. In fact, the boy was stunned enough to actually stop in his tracks. Somehow, cabin leader and June didn't quite mix, and they were the last things that he expected to be in the same sentence. Well, who would vote for her anyway? Caleb knew that her siblings seemed quite averse to the girl and couldn't imagine how they would put her in that kind of position. Unless of course she intimidated them, but still. His jaw clenched and he felt put off all of a sudden, but he continued to follow the girl albeit keeping a short distance from her. He barely caught her next words but he didn't retort as he usually would've done, as his mind was still preoccupied with previous matters. June. Cabin leader. Caleb scowled slightly. This was going to take some getting used to.
Caleb quickened his pace, slightly distracted by June's comment on Peter. A wide smirk played on his lips and he made no move to stop the next words that came tumbling out of his obnoxious mouth. "Sure, your father isn't a dumbass. He's just an ass." He was really pushing the war god's buttons, he knew. He wouldn't be surprised if a pack of mutts suddenly leapt out of the shadows to attack him or something. "'You're right, Wright.' I'm liking the sound of that," he added under his breath, still feeling smug.
Being a keen observer, the son of Momus noticed the difference in June's tone and how she didn't want to meet his gaze but refused to point them out. Doing so would only mean the return of the serious conversations he had honestly grown tired of. Well, he understood that they needed those kinds of talks every once in a while, but he wasn't exactly keen on making it a regular routine. June's shift in mood had no doubt been implanted in his mind though, and he would certainly bring them up when the time was right. If the time will ever be right, anyway.
Caleb bit the inside of his cheek to keep from laughing as June became mean to the kids who were only innocently playing volleyball. "You're worse than I am," he mused as he once more quickened his pace, but jogging was hard with a crutch and a pair of legs that hadn't fully healed. The running didn't take long thankfully, for soon enough the sight of the barren field met his gaze. His eyes disdainfully swept over the place that had nothing but grass, grass and more grass. He had nothing against grass, but too much of something can get a little irritating. Caleb closed his eyes and took a deep breath. Heck, he was getting annoyed by grass, of all things. He needed to get a grip on himself. Badly.
"Sit or not, I don't care," he said wryly. It took him a few more moments to sit down himself, plopping next to June and holding back a wince as his legs protested. They were a lot better than before, but they still couldn't stand sudden movements. Carefully stretching his legs and placing the crutch across his thighs, Caleb grinned crookedly at the daughter of Ares. "Ah, well, I asked for a bit more ambrosia than what was prescribed. And some more nectar too. It worked wonders! The healers were probably giving me less than the supposed prescription," he shrugged, not voicing the other alternative. Perhaps the healers were playing safe, administering the required amount, when he played the game of chance. Caleb chuckled, flipping back some of the hair that got in his eyes. "Well, they looked disappointed when I didn't overdose. Quite funny actually. You should've seen their faces."
Caleb's face turned sour the moment June brought up the cabin leader business. He looked away, frowning. His hands busied themselves by forcefully pulling some blades of grass out of the ground. Caleb wasn't sure if it was his ADHD kicking in or if it was a psychological attempt to vent out his frustrations. "I'm not setting foot in Cabin 5 even if you paid me," he said bitterly, disgusted by the mere suggestion. Caleb wasn't about to make himself an easy target for all the offsprings of the god that hated him, even if June became one of their leaders now. June. Cabin leader. No, they still don't mix.
"How'd you become a cabin leader?" Caleb asked, not even bothering to remove the suspicious edge to his voice. "No one in their right mind would actually - never mind," he quickly caught himself before he could continue on. June was his... friend. There was no reason to question just how she got the position. In fact, shouldn't he be congratulating her or something? Why did he keep acting like it was the worst thing in the world? "Forget what I said. I'm sure they have their reasons." Caleb snuck a glance at her, only meeting her eyes for a split-second before turning away once more. "Congratulations, anyhow."

| June Prenston ♣ -- ares June rolled her eyes at Caleb, picturing an annoying smirk on his face, though since she was unwilling to turn around, she wasn't sure what Caleb looked like. She hadn't seen the surprise on his face when she announced her power, or the hint of jealousy that he was doing a nice job of hiding. June would have already complained. Caleb was doing much better at keeping his emotions quelled. His egotistical comments only lead June to stray her mind from the topic. "You know, most girls are just all over guys who can't stop talking about how great they are," June sarcastically mused.
June turned around abruptly to face Caleb, slowing her pace as she began moving backwards. "I'm not sure whether that's a compliment, or a huge insult." She laughed, flashing Caleb a rather large smile before turning around again. She was already in the field, and there weren't exactly obstacles to avoid, but she liked being able to know what was ahead. She couldn't see into the future anymore. Before, her life had been so predictable, but now, she needed as much knowledge over surprises as she could get her hands on. If that meant looking around for what was in her line of vision, then so be it, but she was determined to get some control.
"I wasn't asking for you permission," June informed Caleb, smiling smugly at her own sassy back talk. That kind of response would have gotten her in trouble with most adults, even Thalia, but June hadn't learned many manners. (or you would think she hadn't, considering the way she acts is worse than the average fifteen year old girl.) Still, she was glad to see Caleb sit next to her, and she tried her best to ignore his struggle. Caleb was well. He had to be. There wasn't another option, all things considered.
June's jaw dropped and she gently smacked Caleb's shoulder with the back of her hand. "You could have caught on fire!" The daughter of Ares thought back on the situation and smirked. "I wish I had been there. I wasn't up to much. Mostly I was just throwing knives. That made a few demigods happy. I think I made their day." June nodded violently, sure that pretending to aim at other children, then missing by a few inches, sometimes more sometimes less, was something everyone simply must have enjoyed. A mutual fun occasion. What could they say, really? June was Cabin Leader. She had the power.
June crossed her arms as she watched Caleb turn away, nudging him forcefully and frowning. "I told you, you only have to come into my room, but whatever. If you're going to sass me about it." If the roles had been reversed, June wouldn't want to go into the Ares cabin at all, but they weren't, so she couldn't understand Caleb's reservations. Her room was completely set apart from everyone else's. Why was he so moody? June gently pressed her hand to Caleb's shoulder again and pushed, trying to get him to lighten up. Nudging never worked, but it seemed to be the automatic reaction.
June stopped nudging Caleb when he spoke a bit more rudely to her. Instead of reacting with the anger that she wished to conjure, she somehow felt a sharp tinge of disappointment. Caleb wasn't pleased with her. Even his congratulations was likely fake. He couldn't comprehend how June had got the position, which hurt more than getting bit by a snake. "I didn't run," she mumble dejectedly, looking in the opposite direction of Caleb. "James picked me. I'm scary. Scary is power. Bada bing, bada boom, cabin leader." June was still too upset with her friend to elaborate, but as she looked back, she met his gaze for a short second. It hurt more to look at him, so after he averted his eyes, so did she. "Thanks," June whispered, speaking as quietly as she could. She was going to not respond, but the part of her that was used to speaking to Caleb had become more dominant, and by instinct, she was polite.
June suddednly felt very sick. "Sorry, I won't talk abut it anymore." June rubbed her eyes, attempting to see into the darkness. This is what it was like for Caleb without his glasses. "What do guys usually want to talk about? Football? Girls?" June snorted. Caleb wasn't your typical guy. He was aggressive, but other than that, he stood alone, just as June did. They were so similar, and so different, together. "How was school without me?" she finally managed, breaking her own silence. Normal conversation. That stuff was awkward. "I'm not good at this . . ."

"Try both?" Caleb innocently suggested with a smirk to rival June's big smile. It was true. He didn't know whether to admire June for her guts or tell her off for it. Well, what she did wasn't something he would really do, he thought. He preferred using the power of words, though the occasional physical violence sounded welcome in some cases, like Peter for instance.
Caleb chuckled slightly at June's display of sass. "Nor was I giving you one," he shot back, not minding her attitude. He was glad for it, actually. Call him crazy for wanting people to actually respond in a sassy manner, but he enjoyed it a little more than people losing their temper. It was just how Caleb rolls. However, if there was something he enjoyed more than that, it was being seated there with June. He had never enjoyed this privilege before, or maybe he did at some point in his life the first time he became friends with the daughter of Ares. Either way, he knew that this could certainly be something he could get used to.
Barely feeling June smack his shoulder, Caleb couldn't help but laugh at her reaction. "But I didn't," he said, smirking. The idea of June throwing knives at scared campers strangely brought him amusement. "I'm not quite sure about that. I think they're more in the lines of being plain terrified than happy." He wouldn't have been surprised if the campers had fled the scene in terror just when June started to throw knives. While others felt differently, he seemed almost immune to her intimidating aura. Nevertheless, it struck him as rather peculiar at how at ease and happy he felt being around her, considering that other people ran from the opportunity of being in the same room as someone who used to have sociopathic tendencies.
The change in topic brought about a drastic change in Caleb's mood. He didn't want to hear about June being cabin leader and having all of the privileges that came with it, no matter how bad it made him sound. Growing annoyed with all the nudging, Caleb caught June's wrist as she pushed his shoulder and looked at her darkly. "Quit it," he simply ordered, before letting go of her wrist and firmly planting his palm back to a grass-free patch of ground. Blades of grass he had pulled out lay scattered around him, and at this rate, he will soon find the surrounding area bare of any plant life.
Caleb had expected June to respond in an angry manner that when she could only mutter bleakly in response, the son of Momus twisted his neck to throw her a confused look only to see that she was staring off into the opposite direction. Caleb shifted on his seat, feeling no more comfortable than June with the sudden turn the conversation took. "Forget what I said. It's nothing. I'm sure you're more than capable for the job," he said, but it did nothing to take back the ease they both felt with each other before. Why couldn't he have kept his opinions to himself? Why did he have to question June's newfound power? The situation only worsened because of that. As Caleb bridged the gap between him and envy, June's spirits swooped down the depths of misery. He let his eyes flicker to the crutch laying across his lap, too ashamed of himself to meet June's gaze (not that she was even looking at him, but still).
Noticing that both their moods hadn't improved even if June attempted to open up a new topic, Caleb let an exasperated sigh escape his lips and focused his energy on not letting any form of negativity creep into his voice. "I have no interest in neither," he said, his tone becoming a little too formal from too much effort of controlling his emotions. Angry at himself, Caleb wrenched even more grass off the ground, crumpling the weeds in his hand before hurling them away from him. "A bore, I'd say. Nothing important happened, not that I can recall any." He paused, quickly exhaling to keep his cool. "Neither am I."
