With Eyes Wide Shut

She held a tissue to her eyes, watching as her husband packed. His camouflage uniform suited him well, according to everyone else. She thought it looked silly, but she knew that she only resented it because it was what was making him go. She begged for him once more to not leave, the twelfth time in the last half hour. He kept reassuring her that he would be fine, and would be home by Christmas. He promised. The husband gave his wife one last kiss, before he walked out of the front door.

Going back to the day the two first met, it was a warm spring evening on one night in April. She had long, wavy, sandy brown hair that cascaded down her shoulders. It fell in place perfectly, according to him. Her skin was a perfect tanned colour, not too light, not too dark. Her emerald green eyes always popped against her skin and hair. She had an hourglass figure to die for. He had short, cropped black hair that never grew past his ears. He had stormy grey eyes that always looked as if he was angry, when he was actually happy. He wasn’t very muscular, but had muscle on his bones. He was very pale skinned, making him look sickly. How they met was a complete accident. A funny accident, at that. He was skateboarding down the sidewalk with an ice cream cone in his hand. She just happened to be walking on the same side walk. He lost control of the skateboard, tripping and falling. His ice cream landed on her shirt. Angry at first, she stomped over to him. Seeing him on the ground, she began to laugh, which made him laugh. And it all went on from there.

It wasn’t fair, it just wasn’t fair. She hollered and cried it out when she gotten a visit from the U.S. Army Colonel. She was told that her husband had died in combat, saving young children from an ambush in Iraq. The Colonel gave her an envelope that had her name written on it in her husband’s writing. Opening it, it held three photos. The first was a picture of them in their teenage days. She sadly smiled to herself. She knew when and where this photo had been taken. It was taken on their first date, when they went to go see a horror movie. They both looked happier than ever. She looked at the second photo, seeing that it was of them right after they had gotten married. She looked beautiful, and he looked handsome. They both looked happier than the first photo. The last photo was of her. It was her senior picture. She had the same smile on her face on the day the met. She cried silently, moving on to the note that he had written her.



“You made me the strongest of all men
I'll remain the happiest of men”



At the funeral, she was the only one there. It was how he wanted it. There was no wake, no notification to his family, just her. The girl he loved all his life. She walked over to the six foot deep hole in the ground, where her husband would make his permanent resting place. She threw down a single red rose, landing on his casket. She stayed and watched as the cemetery workers began filling the hole. She stayed even after that. She sat next to his grave, all through the first night. She went inside her purse and pulled out the note he written. Noticing something written on the back side, she turned over the paper and read;



“I miss you
Baby close your eyes
Lets meet
In our dreams tonight”
