Riley shook his head vigorously. "Definitely not either, you look fine." He replied, his voice finally calmed and steady once more. He smiled again, another weird feeling. This wasn't going too well. Maybe now she'd think he's some soft-hearted Ares kid. He didn't mind her, but eventually it'd reach others. Damn, today isn't going well.

He sighed. "And you don't look so good yourself," he replied, it came out as a whisper. Not what he had been hoping for. He wanted to take his eyes off Luce, but somehow he couldn't. As if if his eyes left, something terrible would happen.

"Yeah, whatever. I don't care whether or not I look ugly. I'm dorky that way." Luce rolled her eyes, she had meant to say that, it felt right.

"You know, you're different from other Ares kids. You seem, well, friendlier. Or is it just because I'm a girl and I'm what people call 'pretty'?" It was indeed a sensitive topic, Ares kids having pride complexes and all. She had crossed a line, it wasn't right to be pushing Riley's kindness too far.

"Don't mind what I just said" Luce said, turning away slightly so that her body faced the ocean.

Riley hadn't expected Luce to say that. She was after all a child of Aphrodite's. And... Looks meant everything to them. At least that's what it seemed to him.

"I'm not any different. And you're pretty... But that's not the reason." He avoided eye contact, looking blankly at the sea, just past Luce's shoulder. Can't look at her anymore, these feelings won't be any better...

"Then, what is it?" Luce asked, still facing the sea. The fog had died down, giving way to the sinking sun. Luce never quite understood why she was attracted to sunsets, sunrises and starry nights. Perhaps it was because she believed they were better than any painting, photograph or sketch. They were real, within grasp.

"The sunset is beautiful. I think I'll watch, you can leave if you think it's boring." Quietly, she sat down on the sandy ground, listening to the oceans crash, the birds chirping overhead, the whisper of the breeze; the calls of nature. Luce closed her eyes.

"To be honest... I'm not sure myself." His voice was soft, Riley just noticed that fact. Quickly overriding his mistake, he continued. "However, sooner or later I will find out." His voice was steady, calm, but not in any way aggressive. Quite impressed with his own results, he smiled.

Riley shrugged, "I'll stay. I have nothing better to do-- even I need to take breaks from training..." He sat down closely beside Luce, his eyes wandering in the sky, letting his body relax from it's usual tense state.

He was so close now, it sent tingles against Luce's skin to sit so close to him. It was as if she were having her own static shock, unable to move or to speak. What did he mean he'll find out?

Luce pointed upward, towards a swirl of pink and orange clouds tainted with the gold of the sunset. "I wish I could make a painting of that, I would be proud for life."

Riley was just right beside her now, she couldn't breathe or stay aware of her surroundings. All Luce could do was blink, for once she felt helpless, open; vulnerable. What was this?

Riley hadn't noticed the close distance between Luce and himself. His eyes were still closed. He could feel the orange light shining into his eyelids, giving the darkness in his vision full of light. He opened his eyes, and when he turned to Luce, he was surprised her face was so close.

He could feel an odd sensation carried out throughout his body. He was frozen, unable to move from his position, his eyes drawn onto Luce. It was like being hypnotized, and his body just refused to do what he wanted it to do.

He was glad when she pointed, quickly taking his look away, regaining control. "Yeah. It's nice." He said simply. He had no interest in those things-- especially not now. His mind was elsewhere. He kept his mind away from Luce, but to no avail.

His body felt hot, especially his cheek. It was a weird feeling that you just couldn't get rid off. He hoped Luce wasn't looking, she might think he's some weird guy. Not a great start. Wait. What start? His thoughts were confused.

Luce's eyes wandered off into the golden brown sand, she had taken a sudden interest in staring at the ground or anywhere except Riley's gaze. This was an extremely awkward experience, probably Riley felt the same way.

"So, umm..." Luce began but was distracted by the ground near Riley's hand, it was blood stained; brown and red, in fact, the color of dry and fresh blood. Without speaking, she traced the source of the bleeding.

"You're hand is bleeding." Yes, indeed she stated the obvious but she couldn't help but feel concerned. Luce took Riley's bleeding hand, tore some cloth off the bottom part of her dress then wrapped it around her acquaintance's injured hand. "That should stop it for a bit but I suggest you go to an Apollo kid now. And take care of yourself more, okay? Just because you have to fight doesn't mean you push your body too hard. You'll make people worry."

Riley shrugged at Luce's concern. "I'll be fine," He replied. But that didn't stop her from bandaging it with her own clothes. He sighed, he felt bad to just take it away. And her hands were so close too. When she was finished and spoke again, he smiled. She worries too much, he thought. "It'll heal within time. I don't need to go to anyone." He said simply, his eyes wandering away from Luce once more.

"Plus... No one really cares." He shrugged, laying back against the sand. "But you seem like you do." He grinned, his eyes closing to relax his stiff body.

"Hey, don't think you're special. It's only natural to care for the injured," Luce pointed out, her teasing tone clearly audible in her voice. "It's not like you would walk away if I were injured.."

Then, realizing what she just said, Luce looked away. Her quickly brightening cheeks unmistakably red with embarrassment. Oops, slip of the tongue. She cleared her throat then quickly changed the topic "So, uhh, camp is cool huh?" Luce mentally criticized herself for saying that as well. What was happening to her?

[Riley grinned again, yet another strange action. "I guess not, and you're right about caring for the injured." Of course, Riley didn't really care, but it seemed right to tell her that he did. Maybe deep down, he did care. Somehow, something told him that she was right.

Riley could see her turn scarlet cheeks, even when she turned away. Deciding not to push and ask what's wrong, he spoke after she asked her question. "It's alright... I've been here for years, it's always the same. Nothing has really changed over the years."

"Yeah, life is so slow paced here. Except of course when you're training for battle, but that's another story entirely." Luce said, carefully thinking through all the words that came out of her mouth. Slip ups would never escape her mouth from now on, she assured herself.

Riley nodded. "Yes, it is. But that's what we're really here for. Training for something that may never come, yet we do it anyway. Sometimes, I just don't get why we exist." He sighed, opening his eyes a little, staring into the clouded sky. "But we're here, and nothing chan change that."[/center]

So everything did happen for a reason. There apparently was a reason why she was sitting here next to him, a reason why she felt this way towards Riley. "Why was I even born, anyway?" Luce managed to blurt out. She actually questioned her existence, it wasn't like her at all.

Riley shrugged, like he'd know the answer to a question like that. Maybe someone from the Athena cabin would be able to, but Riley? Not a chance. Sighing, he spoke. "I don't know." He said simply, his eyes were opened again, turning his head toward Luce's direction, his eyes gazing into hers.

Luce looked away, obviously startled by the sudden action. This was getting more and more awkward every second. In pure boredom, she started playing with the strands of her hair, twisting it around her index finger then letting it fall back. Then she would twist it again and the process would turn into a cycle that seemed to hypnotize her. No, she did not want to look into Riley's eyes, her feelings for him were mixed and unrecognizable. Taking a deep breath, Luce decided she would muster up the courage to gaze back at his expecting eyes. But perhaps that would have to wait.

Riley could see Luce gazing back into his eyes, it was a weird moment, and it had a strange feeling to it, too. They were beautiful, Riley knew that much, and though he thought of how beautiful it is, it never seems to get old. The shade of turquoise and sea green mixture, the way her eyes were gazing into his, it was simply amazing. And Riley himself never thought he would fall for anyone, let alone a child from Aphrodite. It was simply shocking. He could feel his body inching closer, but at the same time he was not actually aware of it, or if he was, he made no attempt to pull away.

"Riley, I-I.. What exactly is going on here?" Luce held his gaze one last second then peered into the sea, her brows furrowed and lips pursed. It had stung to look away, she was even reluctant to do it but she had to- it was the only way to fight temptation. Luce was afraid to fall for Riley and yet, at the same time, she felt a longing to hug him very tight and never let go. She was trapped with nowhere to go, cut in half by her own conscience.

Riley shrugged, looking away as she turned. "I dunno..." He said back. It wasn't a lie, the truth is he didn't know exactly, just plain guesses. Everything looked so plain, he had just realized that, after gazing into Luce's eyes, nothing was simply the same anymore, the once beautiful scenery turned into a plain site with some trees, the plain clouded sky, or just a rising sun with nothing special about it. It was a weird feeling.

The sun was quick to set. It bathed them in orange light, warming their bodies as if it were a punishment for being so awkward around one another. Luce’s skin bristled with the warmth and the strange intensity of the moment, the cool breeze was yet to come when the sun was completely devoured by the black-blue and silver of the night sky. Would they be like this- sitting here, waiting for nothing- until the sun rises again? Or would they leave, forget the moment and pretend in never happened. Luce found herself choosing the latter.

Without a single word, she stood and brushed off the excess sand on her purposely damaged dress. This dress would be a reminder of this moment, she had to repair it immediately. As she was about to turn and run off to the cabin, a cold breeze stopped her and the sun’s light lessened in luminosity. What did it mean exactly? Was it a sign?

Luce stood inches away from where she was sitting. She was waiting for something, the breeze told her that much.

Riley could feel the blazing sun slowly set, the once golden ball of flame had been replaced by something darker, orange to be exact. The heat was still there, but it was faint compared to the brilliant rays that emitted from the sun before. Natural process. Soon, it set completely, hidden from the night sky. The sky was dark blue, the clouds were drifting endlessly carried by the light breeze, and it felt cold against his skin, too. Riley couldn't think of anything to say, so he simply remained quiet, waiting, hoping that Luce would speak, or at least stay.

He was wrong, he could hear her shoes against the dirt, standing up to take her leave. Why though? Was she finding Riley awkward, or disliking? But then again, why did Riley care? It was confusing, but he was sure he felt something for Luce, that much was clear. He was expecting the footsteps to continue as she stepped toward the cabins, but she stopped.

Riley turned his head toward Luce's direction again, she wasn't far away, but she didn't move anymore, either. Was she waiting for something? Was this Riley's cue for some kind of action? He didn't know. But acting on instincts, he stood up to follow Luce, and without thinking, he wrapped his arms around his waist. "Don't go yet," He began to speak, his voice soft and low, his hands lightly held onto Luce's waist.

Luce’s eyes focused on Riley’s, she tried not to mind his hand on her waist and shrug it off. It’s true, the action left her breathless, weak, helpless and her heart was racing; she felt warm all over but somehow it comforted her. She felt like such a weakling and was on the verge of tears, Luce wanted so badly to cripple down and sob but Riley’s hand stopped her; it was strong and firm, it supported her and made her weak at the same time.

Riley lightly pulled Luce closer against his body, his heart was beating fast. A little bit too fast. It was pounding against his chest, like he had done twelve hours of exercise without break, was this feeling strange? He had never felt it before, but then again. He always seemed cold to people, nobody approached him. His lips were beside her ear, and his eyes gazed into hers. "You'll stay, right?" His voice was hopeful, it was boring being alone, but it was much more than just that.

"I-I.." Luce stuttered, wondering what to say and how to feel. She was dizzy now, light headed and barely conscious of her surroundings. "I promise.." she smiled then wrapped her arms around him, holding on tightly and reluctant to let go.

"Good," He said simply, his hold on Luce tightening to bring her even closer. He felt good inside, to have Luce with him. It was strange, because before Luce had come, he hadn't felt the emotions he could feel now. Was it love? Maybe. But to Riley, he just didn't want to let go. Luce's body was soft, and Riley knew not to hold on to her fragile body too tightly.
