Faye McJean
| When Faye was young, her eyes had been distinctly grey, devoid of all color except that of a foggy morning. As she aged, colors slipped into her irises. Specks of honeyed browns and twists of mossy greens seemed to show as her maturity did. Recently, Faye's eyes had not been the only in between of her life. This spring she had graduated with her bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota at 20 with honors, and now she was back in between spaces once more. While the daughter of Athena is famously responsible and intelligent, employers do not appreciate panic attacks in the work place (as she had found out).

So here she was, back at camp for a summer.

Really it was the last place Faye had wanted to spend the summer. Normal kids her age were applying for internships or co-ops, succeeding in every way they saw fit (whether that was networking or spending Friday nights passed out on the floor), but not this demigod. She was far too stubborn to seek help from her mortal family - they had already sacrificed so much for her over the years - and instead she chose to go back to the only familiarity she had left. Monsters were passing threats for Faye; the real monsters slipped into her dreams at night and hid under her footsteps during the day. Her memories left her with dark circles under her eyes and uneasy smiles on her lips. Faye was fine, but by what definition?

She had only packed necessities: clothing, toiletries, her laptop, and her trusted owl ring. Her cropped hair was tied in a loose bun, leaving dark strands snaking down the back of her neck where the scrunchie couldn't reach. It was early morning, six maybe? Faye couldn't sleep after her flight, so she had just taken the first cab she could. The morning mist bit at her palms, forcing them to hide under her sleeves. She recognized the scent of camp as home and as struggle. Camp Half Blood had made her into the woman she was, and apparently Faye wasn't through with it yet.

Hearing a rustle of grass, the demigod's head turned. "Morning," Faye muttered, raising a hand in greeting.

To Nicholas Smythe, sleep was but a dream. There was a time when he still tried. Tossed and turned in one of Cabin 11's numerous beds. Closed his eyes but opened his mind, the nagging fear in the back of his head keeping him up and about, aware of the snores coming from his left and right. He used to count the hours, used to watch the sunlight streaming in through the blinds. It was only a matter of time before he had enough.

Camp at night was so different. Empty. Nick learned to explore. He put his hood up and wandered across the land in search of nothing, not knowing where his feet would take him in the next adventure. Here, as he lay down on the roof of the Big House, watching the dawn arrive, Nick found solace in the fact that the universe was such a vast place that everything in his life paled in comparison.

Oh how he wanted to sleep. If only he could stop fighting it...

As the sun rose he caught a flicker of movement on the hill. He tucked his cigarette between his lips and sat up. Nick wasn't afraid of getting caught smoking and he did nothing to hide his curiosity. As the figure drew nearer he started to scale down the wall, half-wondering if his tired eyes were playing tricks on him or it was the real thing. Nick casually made his way to the newcomer, and a small smirk pulled on his lips when he realized who it was.

"Morning," the girl said, a hand up in greeting.

Nick chuckled and pulled his hood down, showing the dark circles under his eyes and his sunken cheeks.

"Now there's a face I haven't seen in a while."

He took a puff of his cigarette, eyeing her with great interest.

"It's been a while, Faye McJean."

Faye McJean
| The mortal world had dulled Faye's battle reflexes, and sharpened others. She had become accustomed to certain boundaries and grown hesitant of others. Useless data had piled up in her brain from the two years she had spent in Minnesota. The corner store isn't busy at ten in the morning. Maisie, who owns the apartment over, walks her french bulldog around 4:30 most days (she'll let you pet him too, if you ask nicely and look like you've slept recently). On sunny Sunday afternoons the second floor of the library is the best place for a nap. It was apparent the demigod had forgotten how to over-analyze her surroundings, even in her misleading safe haven, Camp Half Blood.

Even in her nostalgic daze, the girl recognized the laugh of whomever she had greeted. Head tilted, Faye's eyes widened as her thoughts were affirmed. Nick. She couldn't place his last name, but the way he spoke her's with a perplexing curiosity gave her a strange sense of relief. "Nick," she replied. The Athenian stole a glance at the Big House, assuming it was where the son of Hermes had come from. How hadn't she heard him earlier?

Recalling the last time they had spoke, and remembering the hazards of secondhand smoke, Faye kept her distance. "Yeah," she murmured. "Maybe it hasn't been long enough." Their previous conversation began playing over in her mind. You can trust me, you can trust me, you can trust me. Faye shivered, from the memory or the cold or a combination of the two. "I can't sleep either." Not tonight, not tomorrow night.
