| A R I A N E C L A R K S O N Ariane strode slowly on the shore of the beach. Her bare feet made a path in the sand. With a barely audible sigh, she sat down in the sand. Ever since she had come to camp, people had told her she had found a place where she finally belonged. But after two years, how could that even be possible? She had always been a loner, even when she was a child. Everyone always knew she was different, and she'd scared them all for good the time a boy had made fun of her and her eyes began to glow.
But once she'd made it to camp, that was supposed to change. She was supposed to fit in with the misfits. She snapped out of her reverie when she saw another pair of bare feet trudging through the sand.

| Quell walked to the beach from the Athena cabin, refusing to let his leg slow down his unusually brisk pace, one of purpose and meaning. Quell had almost forgotten how to walk without it, even though he didn't have any purpose to this walk. Sometimes, Quell forgot to do things for his own enjoyment, he was so used to having something to do or somewhere to be. But today, there was nothing. Quell was almost glad for it, except for the fact that it left him feeling like he was putting off things. Quell was not a procrastinator because he hated the feeling that he was feeling right now, that he should be doing something and wasn't.
The beach was almost empty at this time of year, when the waves were ice cold and the sand seemed to be moist, even all the way near the dunes. Quell walked along the tideline, his boots making imprints on the damp sand. It was low tide, and Quell watched the water line recede and come forward with each wave, feeling comforted for the first time in almost a year. The beach provided comfort no human could, it calmed him without needing to use words. Quell appreciated the silence and solitude of the beach, the only sounds being of the waves and gulls. Until he heard footsteps, and Quell knew he was not alone. | |
