Son of Aphrodite

The snow was sticking just like it should, blanketing the ground in a nice, fresh, white coat that gleamed in the early morning sunrise, giving off a beautiful palette of orange, blue, pink, and white. That frosty nip was in the air that just made people want to bundle up, but still venture outside and frolic in the weather's production. The trees around the camp were bare, with patches of snow clinging to their branches. All except Thalia's and a couple of other evergreens kept their green coats.

Perhaps in a morning like this it would be a good idea to stay close to the fire, or to a heater, and watch the sun rise above the trees through the frosted panes of a window. But rather, the camp was alive with activity from the very first moment of the morning. And there was one main cause: the Winter Festival. This attraction brought campers from their cabins at the earliest sign of daybreak. The Khione campers had to rush to get into position and open shop. Soon after, they were followed by the rest of camp.

Mathieu was not keen on the Winter Festival. In fact, he wasn't too keen on winter as a whole. It just meant pasty-skin, large jackets, fumes of peppermint, cinnamon, cookies, and fires everywhere. His olfactory senses were acute, and he hated being too disturbed by them. Moreso, he hated crowds. And the extravaganza that was the Winter Festival gave him all the more reason to loathe the winter holidays. One might say that he was a scrooge-in-training.

It is unclear what exactly made the reclusive Son of Aphrodite venture from his hovel and out into the open, frigid winter air. And yet, there he was, with an old-fashioned dark green trench and winter boots tromping through the cabin courtyard on course towards the festival. He took strides with his eyes focused forward and his attention on nothing but his destination, trying to zone out the impending crowd before him.

Once he got past the cabins, he found the festival. There was a large line of booths extending out in front of him, and at the very end was a large tented area. Across from the line of booths was a fenced-off area in which campers were busily working on their snowman projects, working hard to win the prize of best snowman. It seemed as though a few were picking up progress from the day before.

Ignoring a majority of the attractions, Mathieu began to make his way towards a small-ish booth that looked like a miniature log cabin, but instead of a front wall with a door there was a counter with two campers behind it, and hot chocolate fix-ins like marshmallows, whipped cream, chocolate shavings, and more all on the counter. Unfortunately, as Mat observed, there was a large line. It wouldn't be unexpected, given Mathieu's temper, for him to just cut to the very front. However, the boy was intelligent, and he knew that half the campers there were very strong, especially those from the Khione cabin, who moderated the entire thing. Knowing that he was at a tactical disadvantage should he start a fight, Mathieu assumed a position at the back of the line, shoving his hands into his coat pockets and waiting.

It seemed that jack frost had decided to lay siege one again on camp half blood. Transparent snowflakes stuck to the window panes, making the world outside too bright and too blurry to see anything. Archer had woken up before the sunrise and had started to build his model house again, making sure that every detail was perfect and exact, because his deceased mother, father, and sister deserved nothing less. The rooms, though scaled down and less furnished, still had tiny reminders of what it once was. There was a little plastic plant in his parents bedroom, almost exactly like the real one. In Mallory’s room the sticks that had been glued together had been painted the exact color of her walls. Archer Thrush was a sucker for detail, and so maybe that was why he noticed and appreciated the translucent snowflakes on the window and thought that they were a work of art. Everybody else in the cabin was asleep, and Archer was very bored. But it wouldn’t have mattered even if they were awake because they wouldn’t talk to him. They had no means of communication as Archer was mostly deaf, only able to hear his heartbeat and screams. HIs deafness was so bad even he couldn’t make hearing aids to help him. But the time for moping was over; Archer now had a best friend and for the first time since the explosion felt like he had an actual chance in life. So he did something he wouldn’t normally do on a cold, wintry day like this: he got out of bed and got dressed.

Today’s outfit was relatively simple; shiny ink coloured shoes and black semi-skinny jeans that were almost brand new. Archer wore a white shit with a print on it, though of what he wasn’t completely sure, he just grabbed it off the rack because he thought it looked cool. Over that to keep his arms from freezing he donned a ed plaid jacket, the variants of colors making a striking motive towards boldness. Archer contemplated wearing some fake glasses, and as a last minute decision threw them on, as well as a black beanie and a couple of necklaces with charms on them. Slipping out of bed quietly, Archer tried not to make any of the old wooden bunks creak, but that was kind of hard to do when, you know, couldn’t hear basically anything. The common room, as expected was pretty much empty save for one camper who was known to have insomnia, and was watching movies on the television quietly. Archer wished that he could do that when he had restless nights, but movies to him seemed a bit pointless, and so he mostly just stayed up to build his house or do some math equations. What he really wanted to do during those dark hours was archery, but it wasn’t allowed because of curfew and the boy wasn’t about to break another rule.

By the time he’d actually gotten outside there was a beginning of a sunrise starting to peak through the dark grey trees. His grandfather had finally started to make his trek across America, lighting the day and banishing the night. Archer exhaled and shivered, noticing the white puffs that emitted from his mouth like clear crystals. Evidently it had snowed overnight by the looks of everything, though it wasn’t particularly deep. It was colder than the boy had anticipated, but it was much too late to go inside now, for fear of waking everyone else. So Archer decided to walk to the hot coca hut to hopefully get something warm inside him. Problem was, as he walked up there Archer saw how long the line was, and he was heart trodden. The wait would be about a half an hour by the looks of it, and then about five minutes more for the campers running the booth to complete his order. Maybe it would be best if he just went back to the cabin after all. Or maybe he could cut through everybody. After all, Archer’s light and thin frame allowed him to slip past others practically unnoticed. Sure, it would be dishonorable, but at least he’d get his drink. But Archer decided not to do that, and was about to turn around when he bumped into a boy. Without a pad of paper and a pen, Archer really had no way of communicating to the boy, because he assumed that the stranger didn’t know ASL. He stood there, fingers uselessly fumbling for words he could never use, mouth opening and closing with words he could never say. Archer, to say the least, was a fish out of water, and he probably looked stupid.

ooc- mat should canonically know ASL bc it would be easier but if he doesn't that's fine.

Son of Aphrodite

Mathieu had been standing in line for a good five minutes and maybe made about two people worth of progress. He didn't really want to blame the Khione cabin, because he found it wrong to blame people doing their duty. Instead, he found blame in the customers who were deciding to take ages concocting their hot chocolate. A couple of times in the five minute span, Mat reconsidered leaving or just cutting. Still, he refrained from doing either. It was as if the winter holidays had drained away his ability to be a shitty guy. For once, Mathieu was making no attempts to ruin anyone's day.

That is, until his patience was tested by not only the line but a force that rammed right into his shoulder. Mathieu felt his body give the slightest of budges backwards, his foot shifting slightly behind him. However the frame of the boy that ran into him was nowhere near large enough to stumble or even fall backwards. On the contrary, even, Mat was surprised that the boy himself didn't fall.

Narrowing his eyes, the son of Aphrodite snared the kid in his gaze. He was surprised that he was basically looking at him at eye-level. Not many were tall enough to be face to face with Mathieu. The boy had grey eyes, which instantly gave him the impression of an Athena kid. His brown hair reminded him of someone he'd seen at camp before, but he couldn't really remember who. As Mat watched, he could see that the boy was evidently fearful, his eyes concerned and frantic, his fingers fumbling about in front of him. The kind of look that deer had in front of headlights, but just add some weird satanic hand gestures. That's what Mat got.

However, distracted by the hands, Mat was soon to figure out that the hand gestures were not at all random, but patterned. Mathieu, a man of learning, quickly recognized them as an American dialect of sign language. Mat had studied sign language only very briefly, but got a majority of the words down. He'd never really foreseen using it, but the situation seemed fitting.

"Calm down," Mat said, providing both his lips to be read as well as the corresponding hand signs. This kid was seriously a sight to be seen and he was going to freak someone out with his nervous fidgeting. And, although Mathieu was immensely annoyed and probably would have just kicked this guy's ass on a normal day, he was much too tired. Plus it was always nice to use a bit of the knowledge he'd acquired every now and then. "Just excuse yourself and leave."

The signs that read ingredients for hot chocolate were quite far away. The backing itself was smooth, charcoal grey chalkboard, the writing a white script that had obviously been redone a few times over, as there were ghosts or previous sentences below them, like someone had murdered those words because they weren’t good or beautiful enough to be seem by the eyes of the campers. It was a same, really, Archer loved all words both perfect and screwed up, and he wasn’t just saying that because he was half athenian. Words truly did fascinate him, and with his hearing failing him the child had more time to study his love of linguistics now more than ever. In reality, Archer was complete rubbish at speaking other languages, but he could read them pretty easily. So far he had learned Gaelic, Spanish, and a little bit of Italian, not to mention, of course, Greek and English which had been hardwired into his brain since before he was born. Still, Archer had trouble reading the hot chocolate signs from this far away. The boy he had bumped into looked like a guy you didn’t want to mess with; particularly this legend didn’t want to mess with the stranger. Archer wasn’t weak, nor was he as strong as the person he’d rammed into.

Ringing his hands and switching from foot to foot, Archer nodded as if he had decided on what he’d wanted. In truth, he didn’t have so much as a clue other than the beverage wasn’t to be so hot it would scald his tongue at the tinniest sip, and whip cream at the top. But he didn’t feel like talking to the intimidating demigod. For some reason, he was just a nervous wreck today. Now, not all days were good days, and if they were then there would be something seriously wrong with Archer. You couldn’t live your life happy every single day of your life; it wasn’t how it worked. People who were overly happy deserved to have something taken away from them. Apparently Archer had been too happy with his life back home as his family was taken away from him as penance. With Tessa, Archer was the happiest he had been in a long time, and during those precious golden light hours it had shown on his face. It had shown the effect she’d had on him through the twinkle in his eyes, and the joy he displayed on the way he walked, a bounce in his step. However when he wasn’t with his best friend, Archer was either a) a nervous wreck like today b) angry at the world c) sad at everything or d) a mixture of any of those. Today wasn’t any different.

But the scent of cinnamon came to his nostrils, and Archer took a deep breath in. The smell reminded him of homemade gingerbread cookies that his mom used to make for them during christmas. Cinnamon was full of good memories, of him and Landon cutting out little men from the dough and placing them on the tray, of one of them not listening to their mother and eating the leftover dough anyways and getting sick, of burning their little chubby fingers on the tray just as it came out of the oven. Cinnamon was the scent of nostalgia for Archer Thrush, and he was almost instantly at peace. All nervous ticks the demigod had once possessed now just dissolved like salt into water, leaving no trace evidence on the surface. For the first time that morning the boy was at peace, and it was all thanks to the smell of cinnamon and the memories it brought along with it. He turned to the stranger, who now seemed very alluring and enchanting, but Archer didn’t know why. ‘Sorry. Um, that just sort of happens — those panic attack things — I’m fine now. Not that you’d worry. Why would you worry, we barely know each other? I’m Archer.’ The demigod signed quickly, a faint blush appearing on his cheeks as he did so.

Son of Aphrodite

Mathieu narrowed his eyes at the boy in front of him. There was something strange about him. It wasn't that he was deaf, nor rather handsome himself. It was something else, and it nagged Mathieu at the back of his mind. He did not speak, trying hard to figure out what it was, merely staring at the camper. The camper who called himself A-r-c-h-e-r. Archer. What was it about Archer? Then, it hit Mat. It was a quality unique, and had only been seen by some particularly foolish souls. Archer did not seem to be very afraid of Mathieu. That was what was strange about him; he expressed no fear. Sure, maybe a little bit of nervousness, shifting from foot to foot and what not. But, it did not seem like Archer was at all fearful of Mat himself. He didn't really like it.

Anybody who had their wits about them, or had encountered Mathieu before, would probably at this point have dismissed themselves. Especially after Mathieu had given specific orders to do so. However Archer remained standing, tall and fair before him, looking him right in the eye. Mat observed a faint blush tinting the boy's cheeks, and quickly his mind ran through a few reasons. Archer could be slightly drunk. Archer could be slightly embarrassed. Archer could be vulnerable to the could air. Three very likely possibilities, but Mat's rationale behind striking the first one was that, if he were drunk, the hot chocolate booth at camp would not be his first destination.

"Pleasure," Mat signed, looking Archer up and down with a flick of his eyes that indicated that it was, in fact, not a pleasure. He debated introducing himself briefly, but decided for it. "Mathieu. Mathieu Renard." He hardly ever introduced himself to anybody as 'Mat', and this case was no different. He preferred to be formal until there was reason not to be. And Archer presented no sort of value that led Mat to believe there was a reason not to be. "Yes, it is true, we barely know each other. But," a faint smile played on Mathieu's lips, "it's likely that we will soon know each other better." Mat didn't really mean that he was interested in learning about the boy. Rather, the line was quite long, and it was more likely that this unafraid camper would tick Mat off to a violent point by the time they made it to the front.

The radiating heat from the hot chocolate stand almost warmed Archer up. Almost. There was still that little bit of winter air that seemed to get through no matter how many layers he put on, and no matter how great the heat source was. His cheeks were cold from the temperature, and he buried his face a little further within his jacket, smiling sheepishly. He wished he could stick his hands in his pockets, but that wasn’t possible. ‘Mathieu… That’s french, right?’ Archer didn’t know why, but he felt giddy, like he could fly or do impossible things on impossible days. ‘Dad taught me about the french. They’re perseverance is really cool.’

The legend stamped his feet, getting some blood flowing so they didn’t turn blue and numb with frostbite. Archer should’ve come later in the day, when it was warmer out and the lines were shorter. Something told him that he’d be there for a very long time with the strange demigod, but that wouldn’t be all that bad. Archer normally got along with everyone, and even though he sensed Mathieu’s hostile attitude towards him, he hoped they’d soon become friends. ‘That’s good. I think that’s good.’ He waited for a moment before signing again. ‘Um, I mean, not that I would do this, but you could cut in line.’

Son of Aphrodite

Mathieu gave a small sigh at the question and then the lame offering of conversation that followed. He liked french history, but the modern man's view of it was rather annoying. People saw the french as the country that surrenders merely because it caved in very quickly during WWII. However France was much more than that, one of the biggest global powers and even during WWII it had the french resistance running through it. So the use of the word 'perseverance' by the other made him grit his teeth together slightly.

"Yes." Mat signed. "It is french." He made no other comment about Archer's dad teaching him about french, and quite frankly did not really care. At this point, without knowing it, Matthieu's pheromones were secreting a decent amount, and not only Archer but perhaps a few other people in line within their vicinity had taken notice of Matt. He was, however, completely oblivious to the fact, as he could not smell it himself, and was more focused on the line moving faster.

"I thought about cutting," Matt responded, a little tired of using his hands for speech. It was an inconvenience. The only possible bright side to it was that he didn't have to worry about where to put his hands to avoid looking awkward, which hardly ever happened anyway. "But I'm kind of on the counselor's watch list. Three strikes and all that."

For some odd reason, Archer really wanted to kiss Matt. It wasn’t because he wanted to experiment kissing someone, because that was what his high school years had been all about. You hooked up with a cheerleader, kissed her, and then got rid of her when she was needy. Though his friends were about as faithful as a fly, Archer tried to stay with the girl for at least a couple of months before gently dropping her, and he had enough respect for the both of them to wait a few weeks before dating another. It was just… Matt. There was something about him. Maybe it was his hair, how dark and deep and endless it was that made Archer want to spend an entire day counting all the strands. Maybe it was how he held himself, so regally and pompous. That might’ve been a turn-off for most people, and it normally would be for Archer. But he’d make an exception for Matt.

He also made an exception when Matt started to talk regularly. A sure sign that he was getting annoyed with the demigod, and couldn’t care less whether they actually held a conversation, Matt seemed to be the type of guy not to bullshit you. Archer, in the simplest of terms, appreciated that. He appreciated honesty, so he appreciated Matt’s honesty, even if it was through actions. It was lucky for Matt that Archer had taken the time to learn how to read lips. It was fairly easy, and with the scent of cinnamon opening his brain and intoxicating his senses with thoughts of kissing Matt for an odd reason, Archer didn’t have any trouble deciphering what he was saying.

“Lucky for you, I don’t have three strikes, so I could afford to cut through the line. Just say the word, and all that delicious hot chocolate can be yours."

Son of Aphrodite

Mathieu had had just about enough of this boy. Although physically attractive, the other showed no signs of power that could be of use to Matt, which is usually what he created the basis for his allies from. The other was death and awkward and lacked a certain air of strength that Mathieu usually required before he continued a conversation with another. If there was no proof of power, Mat would move on until he ran into someone who genuinely caught his interest. A thin deaf boy did not catch his interest at all. In fact, all of the eye-rolls in the world would not be enough to express Mat's discontent with speaking to Archer. Despite the feeling Mat had towards Archer, there was one thing that kept him from blowing the kid off. Mat didn't know who Archer's godparent was. That was typically one of the largest deciding factors when it came to choosing allies, and the fact that Mat had no idea bugged him. If it was someone as useless as Dionysus or even Aphrodite, Mat would have no problem just leaving. But he simply didn't know, and the question itched at his mind so much that he was just about to ask when Archer signed something that finally caught his attention.

Mat narrowed his eyes at the boy in front of him. Was he really offering to risk getting in trouble in order to retrieve a drink for Mat? It was a tempting offer. Mat really wanted to nab some hot chocolate and skedaddle, and the line was insufferably long. Standing in it with Archer would be like Hades. And then it clicked. Archer wasn't doing this out of the kindness of his heart. The realization hit Mat like a pillow to the face, and everything made sense. The blushing, the incessant talking that Mat hadn't desired in the first place. Mathieu must have been emitting pheromones that he didn't know about. A smile crept slowly upon his visage. An impish smile that could only mean he was planning to take advantage of this opportunity. Brain working overtime to hopefully sustain the pheromone emission, Mat formulated a plan in a split second, and in the next split second he put it into action.

Mat slowly took a step forward. A step large enough to close some distance between him and Archer so that their faces were a more preferable 12-inches apart. Utilizing to the best of his abilities the looks that his mother gave him, his impish smile morphed into one of prince charming, and he tilted his head at a slight angle in relation to the sun, hoping it would give them that picture-esque twinkle.

"You know, now that you mention it," Mat started, voice no longer sharp as a sword but smooth and innocent. "I would give anything for some hot chocolate right now." As Mat signed alongside his speech, he tried hard to put emphasis on 'anything.'

Ever since he was a little boy, Archer knew what he wanted. At the age of five, he wanted to contrast a model replica of the Eiffel tower made entirely out of legos. At the age of seven, he wanted to map out the night sky on his ceiling. At age ten, Archer wanted to join the show choir at his school. But there was one thing the boy lacked. The means to do it. The legos were not achievable because Archer had no money, the night sky impossible because he could not draw, and the show choir a smashed dream because Archer had two left feet. There was ambition in his blue eyes, twinkling like a near star in the night sky. Archer desperately wanted to complete something instead of just half-assing it. And maybe being with Mat could help him do something worthwhile in his life. It was a small thing he could do, getting the hot chocolate. He gave Mat a smile, just oddly wanting to please him. “Well then, say no more. I will get the hot chocolate.”

Archer was a smart boy, being the grandson of a tactician and a trickster, or as much of a trickster could be. Although he’d never done something this drastic before, the boy was sure he could succeed. The smell of cinnamon filled his nostrils, igniting his blood into fire and sending adrenaline down his spine. Archer walked out of line, standing by the crowd, observing his best options. Most people would go around the back and sneak in that way, but Archer knew better. Archer knew that about thirty pairs of eyes would be on you, and you’d be found out in an instant. No, his best bet was to go at it from the side. he walked up, sneakily grabbed two steaming cups, and walked back without being noticed.

“Not bad for a deaf boy, huh?” Archer said, handing a cup to Mat. He had a brilliant smirk on, happy that he had actually completed something in his life other than destroying replica version of his house and successfully wallowing in self-pity. Archer took a sip of his own, relishing the burning sensation as it slid down his throat.

Son of Aphrodite

Mathieu cared little for anyone but himself. His selfishness was definitely one of the less-charming things about him, but was something that most Aphrodite kids were cursed with. Most of what Mat did was out of self-interest, and if he ever did something for someone else, it was because it was something that involved him in some way. Whether it be tying some guy's shoelaces because that guy would run off and get killed so that Mat had a chance to get away, or something so simple as holding the umbrella for another camper so that the camper could remember his 'kindness' and repay him one day. Either way, his actions were always centered around himself. It was something that would, one day, bite him in the ass, but until then he would keep acting in the same manner. Having Archer fetch the hot chocolate was no different. It was something that could only benefit Mat, and if it failed it could only harm Archer and keep Mat out of trouble.

Mathieu's eyes traced the back of Archer's form as the boy proceeded to the front of the line. A few campers turned to look at him as he passed by, but there was no violent objection or anything, and it seemed that Archer was doing a good job of getting to the front without resistance. He watched as the boy grabbed two cups and gave a sly grin when Archer returned. The boy was pathetic to him, really. Being deaf was handicap enough, but being absolutely gullible was enough to convince Mat that the boy had no further use. Snatching a cup of hot chocolate seemed to be the peak of his capabilities, and beyond that had no desirable skill that Matt required in order to form his special... alliances.

Mat snorted with derision when he took the cup out of Archer's hand. "Merci, mon gars," Mat said, lifting the cup in a cheers-like fashion. Then, grateful to no longer have to stand in the line, turned to the side and strode right away from it, leaving Archer to stand by himself. As he walked, he pressed the hot cocoa to his lips and gently took a sip. It was pretty good. The same impish smirk appeared upon his lips.
