| • Caleb Wright •Son of Momus A flash of silver sliced through the air before embedding itself on one of the pine tree trunks. The knife was lodged, half-stuck in the bark. If it was human flesh instead of a tree, the knife would have undoubtedly pierced through the whole skin layer and maybe even damage a major organ or something. Well, thank the gods Caleb wasn't aiming for a human then.
The sun rose, peeking from the hilltops. Caleb paused his practice as he watched the sunrise. How the light and warmth from the sun spread out to the skies, how the previously dark blue horizon became brighter and clearer... The sight was just beautiful. Even Caleb could not deny its beauty. But he shrugged, moving to retrieve his knife from the tree. He had barely enough time for things like beauty. Beauty won't help when he was in danger. Practicing his knife-throwing would.
Caleb gave the knife a harsh tug, annoyed that he was hitting trees instead of target dummies. The arena was still being renovated from the manticore attack. It seemed almost ages ago, but Caleb could still remember it like yesterday. He subconsciously adjusted his glasses. His old pair was broken, so it took him some time to get replacements. Stupid manticore, Caleb thought sourly, before walking ten feet away from the tree to throw his knife again, this time at another tree.
But when the knife left his hand, it was already a second too late. Caleb had just realized that he hadn't looked closely enough, or maybe because his new glasses were a little foggy or had something wrong wit them. But either way, it didn't matter. Because Caleb hadn't been careful, and now his knife was heading at another person.
And if that person wasn't lucky, he would soon be dead. | |
