First Impressions {Sapphire}

Austin plopped down on the beach with a bottle of vitamin water and her book, Daughter Of Smoke & Bone by Laini Taylor. She was just at the good part, where the Karou girl is talking about Brimstone "the wishmonger", when a boy tripped over her legs. She looked over at him. He was cute. "Uh, hi, I'm Austin...Sorry am I in your way?"

Hm, sand. Very fine sand, Jonathan thought to himself as he fell face-first to the sandy ground. He immediately pushed himself up, his back facing the girl. He spat out some of the sand that got in his mouth. Huh, who knew that sand could taste so salty. Jonathan then turned to Austin.

"No, it's fine," he told her, smiling his best. Jonathan brushed some of the hair out of his eyes. "I just wasn't looking... that's all," he said apologetically while rubbing the back of his head. Wow, the girl was pretty, Jonathan could attest to that. "Nice to meet you. I'm Jonathan."

Jonathan's eyes swept over the book Austin was reading. The cover intrigued him a bit. Well the blue mask was cute anyway. "Looks like a good book."

"Nice to meet you too, Jonathan. " Austin slid her bookmark in her book and sat up straight. "Yeah, it's a pretty good book." She smiled and ran a hand through her long brown hair. Her sleeve on her shirt slid down her arm and she quickly pulled it back, covering her wrist. She always wore long sleeved shirts, only to cover her wrists. Austin assumed it was pretty odd for someone to sit on the beach in a long sleeve. She looked up at Jonathan with her big blue eyes. "So, what brings you to the beach?"

Jonathan decided to stay, trusting that Austin was good company. He sat down beside Austin, keeping a respectable two-feet distance. He slightly leaned back, his arms stretched out and his hands planted firmly on the sand behind him. Jonathan was wearing a polo that lay unbuttoned, exposing his bare chest, so that he could easily take it off if he wanted to take a dip in the water. He wore swimming trunks too. Jonathan shrugged, looking out into the vast sea that stretched out for miles.

"Well, I fancied a swim," Jonathan said, half-turning to look at her. Slight confusion flashed through his face as his eyes lingered on her long sleeves. "I'd ask you the same thing. You aren't actually properly dressed to be here. No offense," he added quickly.

Austin got but panicky. Did he want her to go swimming with him or was he just stating the obvious? "Uh, yea. To tell you the truth, I'm not totally comfortable with my body." She admitted. You could see just by looking at her. She had reduced to starving herself 2 years ago and has not quite recovered. She use to cut herself, and now sh has so many scas allover her wrists and arms. Austin shuddered and looked down, ashamed of herself.

Jonathan smiled at Austin, exposing his white teeth. Why wouldn't she be comfortable with her body? He saw nothing wrong with it. Well, Jonathan wasn't the type of person to focus on flaws, physical or not. So basically he saw the best in everyone, even if the best wasn't always hard to see. In this case though, Jonathan just needed one look at Austin to say that she was pretty.

"Well, I think you look nice," Jonathan said sincerely as he ruffled his hair. "I'm not saying this just to make you feel better. It's the truth," he added, in case Austin didn't want to take him seriously for that compliment.

Austin smiled. "Thanks." She had never been complimented before. She took a moment to let it sink in. She didn't know what to say. Was she supposed to compliment him too? She had only had few friends. Kinda funny for a daughter of Dionysus. There was a question! "So, Who's your god parent?"

Jonathan smiled back at Austin. He was glad to know that he made her happy, even for a bit. He was, after all, the kind of kid who liked to make everyone happy. Jonathan stood up, not because he wanted to leave, but because his ADHD prevents him from just sitting still for a long period of time. He flexed his arms while looking out to the sea.

"I'm a son of Aphrodite," Jonathan said as he drew closer to the water, letting the cool waves lick the bottom of his bare feet. He half-turned to look at Austin. "And you?"

"Dionysus, oddly enough." She stood up threw off her long sleeve revealing a black bikini top. She ran and dove into the water. When she surface she laughing. Her mascara was running down her cheeks so she rubbed it away. Austin motioned for Jonathan to join her. It was a bit cold but, that made sense. Austin dunked her head under the water to wet her hair.

"I would never have guessed," Jonathan said. He was slightly surprised to hear that Austin's father was Dionysus. He would've thought that she was an Aphrodite kid, but he knew that she wasn't because he hadn't seen her around the cabin. Smiling, he shrugged off his polo shirt and dove in after her. The water was cold, but it felt refreshing. Jonathan started to laugh along with Austin and shook his hair vigorously, sending drops of water everywhere. When he stopped, he took notice of Austin's arms. He blinked the water off his eyes and made out some scars, and Jonathan had an idea on what caused those marks.

"You cut?" Jonathan asked before he could stop himself, his smile fading a bit at his realization. He couldn't understand why Austin felt the need to inflict those wounds on her own body. But he decided not to judge before he could hear the whole story.

"Well, I use to. I don't do it anymore. My mom died when I was 14. We were really close. Then my step-dad started to spy on me because he knew something was up. I was sent to a rehab facility when I was 15. Thats it....Please don't think that I'm some crazy screw up..Because I'm not. Well, at least I don't think so...Anyway, I don't do it anymore. I stopped because I realized how stupid it was." Austin rubbed her wrist. She didn't even remember what it felt like. She didn't want to find out though.

Jonathan listened intently. "Nah, you're not a crazy screw-up," he said honestly, trying to lighten up the whole thing. The important thing was that Austin had stopped cutting. If she hadn't, then Jonathan would try to force her not to. He hated seeing others in pain, especially if it was self-inflicted.

"Glad to know that it's just a phase then. You got me all worried there." Jonathan floated lazily across the water, occasionally trying to get the hair out of his face.

"Thanks, I don't hear that too often." Austin smiled and splashed some water at her face. She was relieved that he didn't call her crazy or anything. Austin looked up at the sky before flopping into the water. She lay on her back, floating.

Jonathan smiled before he dove in the deeper waters. He swam for a while and resurfaced for air. But there was one little problem. It seemed like his foot got caught in a tangle of seaweeds. His head barely broke the surface of the water, and he needed to keep on paddling his feet to keep it that way. Jonathan gasped before he plunged back underwater to see what was wrong. He was right. His foot got tangled in seaweeds--a lot of them. Needing air, Jonathan tried to go back up, but his face barely reached the surface now.

Oh gods, Jonathan thought to himself, trying to hold his breath. He barely had three minutes before he would drown.

Austin heard splashing and looked to her left. Jonathan. He was drowning. Austin swam over to him as quickly as she could and wrapped her arms around his chest from behind, like they were taught in Life-Guard training. She pulled and pulled but, he wouldn't budge. She swam underwater to see what was holding him down. Nerieds. Stupid sea sluts. She noticed they had seaweed like hair and blue skin. "What The Hell?" She thought. She started to tug at Jonathans leg. She couldn't free him.

Jonathan wondered why he had Aphrodite as his mother. Maybe being a son of Poseidon would be a lot more help in this situation. Or just being the son of a god who actually had powers instead of just looking pretty. These were just errant thoughts however. Jonathan loved his mom even if he hadn't met her, and wouldn't exchange her for any other god. But, looking at the seaweed creature, Jonathan thought that it was not a good time to be a son of Aphrodite.

Then as Austin tried helping him, Jonathan squinted through the salty seawater (which hurt his eyes a lot) and saw that the seaweed had a face--a face of a woman. And she was smirking mischievously at him. Creeped out a bit, Jonathan had a stronger urge to pull himself free now. He tried kicking, but the seaweed was just too mushy. His three minutes were running out... fast.

Austin was getting really fed up. She couldn't get the nerieds to let Jonathan go. She swam to the surface and started to swim as fast as she could towards the shore. Austin ran across the beach and dove for her sword. She landed on her stomach but, quickly scrambled up. Running towards the water, she could see Jonathan's head bobbing. "Stupid Flippin Nerieds!" She mumbled.

"Let go of me!" Jonathan said as his face barely broke the surface of the water. Maybe the Nereid could hear how annoyed he was and let go. He went under again, sealing his mouth shut so as not to drink any of the saltwater. Then he felt the grip on his foot grow slack and he rejoiced a little inside. Maybe the Nereid had realized how annoyed he was. Jonathan swam above water again, gasping for air, but it barely lasted a few seconds before he felt the seaweeds wrap around his foot once more. What the Hades? Jonathan thought as he got pulled back under.

Austin dove into the water. Her sword pointed infront if her, she swam towards Jonathan underwater. She was going to cut off the nerieds hair. Austin reached Jonathan, he was still struggling. Austin grip her sword and started to sliced the nerieds hair. Hopefully that would help. She could feel Jonathan slowly floating up. His head was above water now. It was working.

Jonathan rose up to the water, finally free of the seaweeds. Well, for now at least. He caught a glimpse of Austin and her sword back underwater. It looked like the Nereid was trying to put up some fight. But then, Jonathan didn't want anyone to get hurt, demigod or no demigod. After taking a huge breath, Jonathan plunged back underwater and pulled on Austin's arm. He shook his head at her slowly, bubbles coming out of the corner of his lips. Slowly he started to lead her back to the shore.

But the Nereid seemed to have other ideas. The sea nymph scowled, before heading for the two of them. Jonathan's eyes grew wide and he protectively swam in front of Austin. His best guess was that the sea nymph wasn't too happy with the fact that Austin cut her mushy seaweed hair. The Nereid probably wanted to get revenge. Jonathan didn't want that. He slightly nudged Austin to convince her to swim back to shore, all the while pushing the button on his necklace. Almost instantly, the necklace morphed into the celestial bronze sword he now held in his right hand. Jonathan eyed the Nereid in front of him warily as he held the sword defensively in front of him. He had never tried swordfighting while underwater before, and he could only hope that the Nereid didn't know a thing about fighting.

Austin shook her head. She wasn't going back now. Austin stood next to Jonathan, holding her sword in front of her. She waited to see if the neried would even come after them. The neried screeched and dove under the water toward them. Austin dove over the neried and sliced it down its back.

Jonathan wished he could cover his ears as the Nereid let off a ear-splitting shriek right underwater. He could see some sort of liquid pouring out of the sea nymph's back from where Austin sliced. Jonathan hurriedly grabbed Austin's arm as he tried to swim to safety. He pulled her back behind him as the Nereid, slightly getting over its injury, turned to swim once again towards them. Mentally apologizing for what he was about to do, Jonathan swung his sword in an arc in front of him, closing his eyes as more of those liquid thing gush out of the sea nymph. Feeling sick all over, he started to pull Austin with him back to shore. He collapsed to the sand as his sword fell right beside him. Jonathan's breathing was ragged--he needed oxygen that much.

"Thanks--for back there," Jonathan said in between gasps as he slowly turned his head to where Austin was. "Are you--alright?"

Austin nodded. "Yeah, I'm fine. How 'bout you?" She got up and ran over to where her towel was. She grabbed her beach bag and her umbrella and brought them over to where they we sitting on the beach. Austin put her sword in her bag with the sheith over it. "So, quite the day, huh?"

Jonathan tried to fix his hair as his breathing returned to normal. His hair was stuck to his face like glue because of all the water. He parted his bangs just enough for his eyes to see Austin. He smiled at her.

"I'm good," he reassured her. He spotted his shirt and towel a few feet away and he quickly picked them up. He draped the towel around his shoulders as he softly laughed. "You know, I will never look at the beach the same way again," he remarked, looking at her.

"Same. I've never had a problem with Nerieds before." Austin smiled back at Jonathan. She leaned to her left to grab her beach bag and pulled out her cellphone. "Its 6:30. We should get back for dinner." Austin stood up and put on her clothes. She put her umbrella under her arm and slung her beach bag over her shoulder.
