What Is Love?

What is love?

Is it
The smile on the face
Of the new mother
As she looks at
Her newborn child

Is it
The awe expressed
In the posture and demeanor
Of her husband
As he stares
Transfixed
At the child
His child
All the while
Slyly slipping an arm
Around his girl's waist

Is it
The feeling that simmers beneath
Heated words exchanged
By two young lovers
500 miles away

Is it
The bowl of ice cream
Shared by two sisters
As they hunker down
To watch a movie
That they called truce
From their daily clashes
In order to watch
To enjoy
With one another

Is it
The hands held
By the elderly couple
On the park bench
Or perhaps
The memories shared
Memories of hot summer nights
Of slow dances
To no music
Memories of each other's eyes
And the world fading away
To nothing but eyes

Is it
The flash of anger
On your best friend's face
As she sees
Your red eyes and matted eyelashes
Your ruined makeup
As she marches straight up
To your new ex-boyfriend
And informs him that he just made
A terrible mistake
That you were the best thing
To ever happen to him

Is it
The endless tears
Streaking the cheeks
Of that best friend's face
Her hand pressed to the wall
As she is told
Of her father's death
As you stand there helplessly
20 years later

Is it
The unwavering faith and loyalty
Of a true friend
Even after you've hurt them
More times than you can count

Is it
How quickly
How easily
You can abandon the idea of logic
When it comes to someone
You care about
How from then on
From the point you abandon logic
Abandon reason
You begin to depend
On your gut
On your heart

Perhaps love
Is the unconscious realization
That you would sacrifice anything
Everything
Just for them

Maybe love
Is when nothing is impossible
When there is always a hope
When there is always a will
And most definitely a way

It could be
That love
Can't be understood
That love
Isn't meant to be understood

It could be
That love
Is a part of every human
That love
Is uncontrollable, inexplicable, untamable
Inevitable

It could be
That love
Is just love
That it will give
And it will take
That it will cause both joy
And pain
That love
Is jealous, malicious, merciless
And yet
Incredibly beautiful

It could be
That love
Is nothing
And at the same time
Everything

It could be
That love
Is limitless
That love
Does not know
The meaning of the word
No
The meaning of the word
Never
The meaning of the word
Failure

It is
The brave
The courageous
The noble

It is
The pure
The untainted
The innocent

Perhaps
Love always prevails

Maybe
Love is eternal

It could be.
