| Essie was feeling lightheaded as Leroy took her to the infirmary. "Oh gods." she said, looking at her exessively bleeding arm. "This isn't goo...right?" she asked, looking at him. She wasn't a real good person to be able to look at a lot of blood, which was horrible because she had grown up in places where if you saw it, you knew you were either safe, or had to get the hell away. She was slipping away as her eyes faded. She wanted to sleep. She forced them open and looked at Leroy. | |

| I worked with the newly identified herbs quickly. I had been trying to find a good elixir for this for a long time. This was the biggest cause of death here at Camp half-blood. I frantically ground the juice out of one plant, and at the same time, tried to chop up ambrosia squares to keep Essie at bay. "Keep with me here," I told her. "C'mon...." I breathed. | |

| Essie forced her eyes open for what felt like the millionth time. She didn't know how much longer it would be until she actually gave into the darkness and no pain her body provided herself. She fought with herself. She felt restricted, she wanted to fight it. She couldn't let it take her over. She had to stay awake, that much she knew. She watched, trying to pay attention to what he was doing that would help her. her eyelids were slowly closing, she forced them open again. "I don't know exactly how much longer we have her Leroy." she said, her voice not being able to come above a murmur, from fear and the fact that with every second she felt like falling asleep. | |

| I quickly grabbed the vile, fearing that if I spoke, I would slow down. I poured in the liquid, grabbed and diced ambrosia into extremely tiny pieces. I put two chunks into the vile, put 2mL of nectar in it, and quickly dashed over and handed the vile to Essie. "All you need to do is drink it," I said, cleaning the blood, and dabbing water onto her forehead. "Just take a few sips..." | |

| Essie eyed the glass, she knew it would help her, but she didn't know if she could support herself enough to make herself take a drink. She looked at him, then took a a few sips. She couldn't support herself, she collapsed back down on the bed. She was feeling slightly better. She looked at him. She was soon extremely tired. There had been too much stress for her in that day. She didn't do well in stress, and then mixed with the extra blood-loss problem she just had...she couldn't fight herself anymore, she gave in and passed out.

I sat by her bed, praying frantically to Apollo for help. "Stupid elixir," I muttered. I hope it works, I thought. Every now and then, I cleaned her wound, put on pressure, and dabbed her forehead with water. I could now just hope that the gods would help.

| Essie was nowhere. She couldn't move, she couldn't speak, she couldn't make a sound, no matter how hard she tried. It was making her irritated. The elixir had worked, now she just had to get out of her...fainted state. She tried all she could, but gave up eventually, there was no use. She couldn't make herself wake up. | |

| I sat in the chair next to her bed, staring at the wall. I felt like a failure. My mind wandered and eventually I ended up thinking about why she was in such a bad mood when I had just woken up. I doubted it was the blood loss thing. I crossed my arms, and just waited hopefully. | |

| Essie tried her hardest to move something. That thing just so happened to be her finger. It twitched. She could feel it. Any sounds that might have been happening were faded and sounded like echo;s coming from a million miles away. She wanted to try and talk. She tried to open her mouth and speak, but she guess that she was sill too tired to even do that. | |

| Newborn life replacing all of us, changing this fable we live in. No longer needed here so where do we go? Will you take a journey tonight, follow me past the walls of death? But girl, what if there is no eternal life? I see my vision burn, I feel my memories fade with time. But I'm too young to worry. Seize the day or die regretting the time you lost. It's empty and cold without you here, too many people to ache over. | B E N J A M I N | R E E D | | S O N | O F | T H A N A T O S | Benjamin enjoyed the humid months of summer, and was thankful that the camp borders were capable of blocking out any frigid climate and pesky snowfall. It was easy to work with, especially when you're sent to a camp where you're expected to spend the rest of your life at training as a hero, and proving your worth to your immortal parent. Most of all, he found winter to be absolutely worthless. It was that time of year where everything seemed to be cold and calculating, which would be an odd statement coming from him since he was, after all, the son of the lieutenant of Hades, Thanatos.
There were days when Ben would calmly pace back and forth in the security of his cabin, pondering on why he was so much like his father, but also so much different. He was an introvert, and that trait was clearly evident to all that watched him pass, though there was a side of him that he would share to those that won his trust--the one thing he prized the most, and awarded to the worthy. Those people were the ones that understood him well enough, and never labeled him a freak or a loser. Those were the people he respected.
There were also days when he when he would lose hope in himself, and wonder why he was even born. The only reason why Thanatos tried for another child with Ben's mother was to allow Ben to live, but the only purpose for his existance was to clear up the mistake Ethan, his full-blooded brother, had left. It scarred Thanatos, that was for sure, and the god didn't want to be criticised for his son's failure to defeat a wild boar. Benjamin was chosen to make things right and restore his father's name, and he did just that. Why did he ever loose hope in himself was a mystery to Ben, but he was well aware that every human, demigod or mortal, experienced the same emotion. Doubt--one emotion that can not possibly be ignored, whether you're arrogant or humble. It's always there, lurking, whether you know it or not.
Today was one of those days when the son of Thanatos was pacing in his cabin, pondering. This time, however, he wasn't concerned about his problems that he had to face in his past, but one that recently had popped up. He had a girlfriend. Most wouldn't understand his predicament, and in fact, they might just laugh at him and shake the whole idea off. What was so bad about being in a relationship? Trust. Benjamin never trusted anyone easily, and he wondered why he had given into Essie without almost any hesitation. Usually, he wouldn't allow his defenses to be crossed without his assent, though a part of him did allow it. How could this be? He always excluded himself! He never allowed anyone in his life without a good reason! He sticked to his way of life, and always prevented himself from being fueled by his emotions. Why was it so easy for the Apollo girl?
The floor boards creaked as his plain, black shoes walked across the cabin back and forth. Dead silence filled the room. His cabin mates were all off attending to their camp duties, while he was using his free time to think. Essie. Essie. Essie. That name repeated itself in his mind for as long as he had been pacing. He couldn't help himself--his insides were battling each other once again. When he first met Essie, he followed his usual ways. Show no emotions. Keep calm, stay cool. Why had their conversation taken a different toll was beyond him, and for some reason it ended up turning into a date in New York that followed that afternoon. Ben enjoyed the date--he wasn't afraid to admit that--but his alter personality, if you will, absolutely despised the idea. His 'mask' was now officially apart of him, and believed that it deserved every right to voice it's opinion in matters.
To make the situation worse, Benjamin thought he was going insane. He kept hearing these voices in his head, and these sudden urges to go to the infirmary. It was as if something was beckoning him to follow, and he could do nothing but obey like he was being told what to do by his mother. Gradually, after he made his decision, he strolled out of the cabin into the infirmary.
The sight before him was truly astonishing. A mere coincidence, almost. There he was back at the cabin trying to sort out his problems, while Essie was laying on a cot with blood streaming down her arm. How could he not have known? He was supposed to protect her!
Almost instintively, Benjamin rushed towards her. Worry filled his eyes, but he reminded himself to remain composed and show no emotions.
Block everything out, Ben.
"Essie," he began, a slight crack in his deep voice, "are you... alright?"

| Essie heard something in the distance. She moved, she got her arm to move. She touched something. She felt a persons arm. Her eyes fluttered open after the battle inside of her. She saw...Ben? She faintly remembered Leroy, but not Ben. "B-Ben?" she asked, looking at him, her voice was weak and feeble. She felt like she could not move her other arm, but the blood had stopped...somewhat. She looked at him, "H-how?" her voice cracked a bit. She never was able to speak after waking up easily. She sighed, looking at him, was it a mere coincidence that he had shown up? How long had he been there? Her mind exploding with questions. | |

| I looked over as a kid arrived. I probably shouldn't say 'kid' 'cause he looked older than me. He touched Essie and whispered something I couldn't understand. Must have been Ben. I hadn't seen him around camp ever, so I didn't remember him. And I didn't really trust him. He looked like a good guy, but it was just ordinary brother instinct. I didn't want Essie to get hurt emotionally. I decided it was best not to stare, and to keep quiet, so I shut my mouth, got up, and began mixing the herbs again. I assumed they had worked since she was awake, and the bleeding stopped pretty well. I sighed, and tried to listen in as I worked. | |

It's empty and cold without you here, too many people to ache over. | B E N J A M I N | R E E D | | S O N | O F | T H A N A T O S | Benjamin took a moment to look at the boy mixing what he guessed were herbs. He didn't show it, but the boy seemed to give off a sort of aura that showed distrust in Ben--which he was completely used to--so he guessed that the boy was one of Essie's half-siblings. Did Essie tell him of their relationship? She promised she wouldn't until she was ready, unless she decided she was and went ahead and told. He was fine with it, but the idea made him feel a littel disoriented.
He turned his attention back to Essie, observing her bleeding arm with his coal, black eyes. The boy at the counter seemed to have everything under control, and Ben had full confidence that he knew what he was doing, as he was a child of Apollo. Then again, though, he wasn't that trusting, so a little doubt seeped into him as well.
Ben looked up at his girlfriend, keeping himself from giving her too much sympathy, as he knew she didn't like being pitited as much. That fact helped him also, because he didn't want to show emotions, and that just made everything a little easier for him. At least she understood him.
"You'll be alright," he said, reassuring her. He turned to the boy once again. "She will be alright, yes?"
The question wasn't meant to scare him, but to provide Ben with the optimism he needed. "Right?" he reapeted, concern showing in his tone of voice, but his efforts to sound completely blunt also being exposed.

| I jumped at the sound of his voice. Holy mother function, I thought. Except I didn't think 'function'. That sacred me. And in all honesty, I wasn't sure whether she could be okay or not. Deaths were common here, but I wouldn't allow Essie to be one of them. I breathed. "Yeah," I said, sort of quietly. I didn't turn to look at him as I said it either. It wasn't that I was being rude, its that he seemed intimidating. I finished the drink, but when I turned around, I realized I wasn't sure if Essie was strong enough to drink it again. | |

| Essie rolled her eyes at Ben. "I'll be perfectly fine." she said, looking into his eyes. She could neither of them trusted each other very much. "Well...I'm fine..." she started to sit up,she knew one of them would force her down. She sighed as a small headache came upon her as she sat up, but paid it no attention. She stretched, like she was actually going to get out of the bed. She knew she would have to tell Ben that Leroy knew. She just didn't know how. She wasn't ready to tell huge groups, but she trusted Leroy, he was like a little brother..or an older one, just not age wise. She sighed, swinging her legs over the edge of the bed. | |

| I swept over to her, and handed her the glass. "Drink up," I said, cleaning off my hands on a rag. My eyes flickered to Ben just for a split second. A split second, which was enough for my good eye to scan him thoroughly. I looked back at Essie. I set my hand on her forehead. "Well you feel better," I said, trying not to restrain her like last time. Last time..."Anyways, you shouldn't do anything to open up the wound okay? From the...err," I glanced at Ben again. "Accident." I mouthed the words 'sorry' to Ben, then dashed to the other section of the infirmary, to fill a glass with some nectar. | |

| Essie blinked a few times, "Wait..." she scrunched her eyebrows together, "You're not going to say I must stay here for the next week for recovery, or that I have to stay away from training, or anything?" she tilted her head, "You're just going to let me go?" she still didn't understand how she wasn't actually being restrained, "Like..." she snapped her fingers, "that?" she asked, disbelief evident in her voice. She stayed on the bed, she faced Ben while Leroy went to get something. "I need to tell you something..." she trailed, biting her lip, looking at him. | |

He remained absolutely quiet; not a word to speak, or a noice to be made. A straight face was all that could be seen; emotions well hidden from the public. He was always extra cautious with first impressions, because some people usually don't turn out to be who they say they be. In all honesty, he was just trying to defend himself.
Silence.
He took a quick moment to watch the boy sprint over to the other side of the infirmary to grab a bottle of nectar, but then quickly returned to his thoughts. What was it that communicated with him back at the cabin, alerting him of Essie's injury? Was it just instinct, or some sort of being? The second option didn't seem likely; gods were forbidden to intercede in their children's destinies. Maybe it was just him growing to concerned with the relationship thing, and he somehow discovered a way to connect with Essie through thoughts and impulses.
Ben blinked when Essie turned to him, and he recognized her habit of biting her lip when there was a topic of great importance to be discussed. He slowly walked over to her and kneeled beside the cot she rested on.
"What is it?" | |

| Essie didn't know why she was really nervous about this, "I told Leroy..." she remembered, they didn't really know each other, "The other boy." She bit her lip again, "He was asking and it slipped out when I was in here before..." she stopped talking in a way, now she had to tell him the incident. She sighed, "And we somehow got in a fight about candy...and his arrow accidentally got my arm." she showed him her arm. "It went all the way through." she explained. She bit her lip looking at him, playing absent-mindedly playing with her hands. | |

The secret was out--at least, to a thirteen year old boy. Depending on whether he could keep was mouth shut or not was Ben's main concern. He wasn't embarresed to be with Essie, but he could care less for the questions he would be bombarded with by his half-siblings and cabin mates. If they found out about his secret relationship, they would take it as a joke at first, but then later find out. Plus, weren't relationships supposed to be private matters anyway? Why was it everyone else's business?
"It's fine, Essie," he said, cocking his head towards Leroy. "Does he, y'know, know how to... Keep quiet?"
It was probably already too late now. It was only a matter of time until the whole camp discovered their secret, and the gods only know what the children of Aphrodite and the love dieties would do. He didn't need the attention. He was perfectly fine with being who he was--an introvert, and percieved by many as someone who is cold, dark, and mysterious. That's what he wanted to be depicted as, so that it would be easier for him to stay away from others. It would ruin all that he worked for if he was exposed like that.

| I came back with the drink in my hand. "Here," I said, handing her the drink. I stood there awkwardly for a moment, examining my cruddy shoes. "Am...I interrupting something?" I asked. "Cause...I can go..." I said, as the awkward silence followed me to the door. | |

| Essie nodded, "I made him promise not to tell anyone." she was starting to feel guilty about hiding things from her siblings. She understood Ben enough to know that he didn't want to change his ways though. Essie knew somehow people were going to find out, whether it was an accident or someone finding out and spreading around gossip about how two of the camps quietest campers were now dating. She sighed, "You're fine Leroy." she sighed and looked at Ben, even if she didn't tell, could they really hide it from him? She bit her lip and looked at Ben for help. | |

The mask side of him was on it's wit's end with this relationship. Break up with her. Break up with her. Break up with her now! She's destroying you! He didn't want to leave Essie, and to make everything worse, another side of him was supporting him. No, stay with her. She's what you want. The never ending conflicts that took place inside of him left Ben confused and unsure of what he wanted. How was he going to progress through life when he couldn't even understand himself?
Ben straightened his back, his black-eyes gaze shifting from Essie to Leroy, and then Essie again. He didn't expect her to spill it so early, though he should have been prepared for it. He wasn't sure how he was going to be able to last knowing that one other person knew about him and the Apollo girl. He would keep shut, right? He wouldn't tell anyone, right? His nerves were going haywire, and an uncomfortable feeling formed in his stomach. His head began to pound, and...
Nervousness.
The teenager kept himself foculized. Don't show emotions, no matter what. Forget about it. Just forget about. He'll remain quiet. He will. He has to.
Benjamin looked up to see Leroy standing next to he and Essie. He hadn't heard what they were conversing about, which Ben was extremely greatful for. Essie looked at him for support, and the son of Thanatos understood what she was telling him to do with a simple glance.
"We were talking about last night," he said, easily forging a lie together in seconds. "I snuck out of camp to visit my, er, family, and I was just informing her of what happened."

| Essie looked at him greatfully, she took the drink of water. She felt like she suddenly had to be alone. To think things through. She wanted for the fact of one person knowing not to make things harder, she hadn't meant for it to. She sighed, "So..." she looked at Leroy, "Can I leave now, kiddo?" she asked, raising an eyebrow. She wondered if had just said that because he was scared of her jumping out of the window again...oops. She half smiled at the kid. She wondered how Ben would react if he knew that she had jumped out of the window...? she sighed and bit her lip a small bit looking at him. | |

| I leaned against a wall and shrugged. " I suppose. You can stay here if you want, I'm definitely not going to say 'No' again," I smiled, glancing at the window. "I need to work a shift here anyways. Y'all can both stay, I can talk to the campers an tell 'em that y'all are healing," I said. I hoped they wouldn't mind my slang. I grew up that way. We were 'Texans' even though I had never lived there. I smiled warmly. "Up to you," I said.I went over and hugged Essie. I don't know why, but I was extremely thankful she was okay for now. I stood up and smiled at Ben. "Don't worry I won't tell." I smiled warmly, and left. | |
