| Essie looked at him, an eyebrow raising. "Certain...feelings that are really hard to explain?" she asked aloud. She gulped. She had to admit it. She couldn't believe that this was happening. She smiled at his red cheeks. She looked directly at him, hoping that this wouldn't end up like her mother. "Absolutely." She leaned in towards him, she had no clue what she was doing, it was like something was pulling her towards Ben. An unrecognizable force. She was going into completely new territory. | |

| Newborn life replacing all of us, changing this fable we live in. No longer needed here so where do we go? Will you take a journey tonight, follow me past the walls of death? But girl, what if there is no eternal life? I see my vision burn, I feel my memories fade with time. But I'm too young to worry. Seize the day or die regretting the time you lost. It's empty and cold without you here, too many people to ache over. | B E N J A M I N | R E E D | | S O N | O F | T H A N A T O S | "Yeah . . . Certain feelings that are hard to explain. That's it."
Benjamin's eyes met the ground, averting his coal, black gaze from Essie. From the corner of his eye, he noticed the daughter of Apollo watching him, her lips curving into a perfect smile. His face grew redder and redder, but Ben tipped his hat so that it covered his face, not allowing her to see it. His weaknesses were showing--everything he tried to hide was now showing in one simple blush. The son of Thanatos wouldn't allow himself to loose a battle between him and his emotions. Even if he truly liked this girl, there would be certain precautions he'd have to take before anything about his dark and mysterious appearance was destroyed--the one thing that made him the way he was, and what hid his sensative side of him from the world.
Ben peered behind his gray fedora. His eyes almost widended when he realized Essie was leaning towards him, but he knew better than to expose any facial expression other than his usual poker face. The teenager didn't know whether to run or stay--to leave Essie out in the forest alone with no way back to camp, or to expect what was coming.
Involuntarily, Ben slid his hat back on his head. It was almost as if he was unaware of everything around him, like it all suddenly faded away in darkness. He grew afraid, but didn't cower away. He froze--his body tense. All he could see was Essie--the straight, jet black hair that fell down her back and crossed over her shoulders; her bright, green eyes--one of the only girls that actually had some respect for Benjamin.
Without a moment's notice, he cowered back.
"I'm sorry." he said solemnly. "I don't know about this."

| Essie tried to cover up what she was doing. "I-I was going to fix your hat." she said, biting her lip. She stood up. "Now I see though." she said sadly. She was able to tell slightly where she was, she recognized the large rocks that her and Josh used to play at. She sighed. She started towards the rocks and started climbing. Trying to hide the tears that threatened to fall. She had been stupid, just like her mother was. She closed her eyes when she was at the top of the boulders, letting her hair go against her face as the morning wind blew. | |

It's empty and cold without you here, too many people to ache over. | B E N J A M I N | R E E D | | S O N | O F | T H A N A T O S | Benjamin instantly felt guilty for rejecting Essie like that. He had been so selfish--selfish in a way that he intended to be the best for both of them, but left the half-bloods even miserable than before. He could tell that Essie took it hard too. Why, if he could just turn back time, he would do so for the sake of the daughter of Apollo. She had been so kind to Ben, so caring--yet, he blew her off.
"Essie, I -- Wait!" Ben started for the rocks, gripping each one and lifting himself up gingerly. Once he had reached the top, he planted himself next to Essie.
"Essie, I didn't mean that. What I meant was --" What was the use? Ben had been so careless with his words, even though that's the exact opposite he planned to be. Essie, although appeared to be strong--and even though she was--was just as fragile as he was, he guessed. He didn't want to give up on her. Even though he thought letting her go was a good idea before, he had proven himself wrong in a lackadaisical manner.
His eyes, for once, filled with sorrow. How could he care for someone he had just met so much, and feel almost nothing for the death of his brother? The question was nearly irrelevant, but instantly popped into his head as he began his apology--he couldn't help but contemplate on it.
The situation at hand was much more important, however. He took a deep breath and sighed. It relieved him of the tension in his thoat and stomach, therefore giving him enough strength to speak.
"Essie, I'm sorry for what I said. In truth, I do like you. I was just . . . Afraid."
Ben's words seemed to hang in the atmosphere. It actually made him feel a bit better, releasing that one thing that was holding him back. Now what was he to do? He wasn't expecting Essie to forgive him--she had every right to--but he still longed for her forgiveness.
"I truly am sorry. If it is your wish, I will leave you now and never see you again." His own words clasped his heart so tight that it just might burst in anguish. "I am sorry, and I hope you can forgive me."

| Essie looked at him, hurt in her eyes as she quickly tried to cover it. She closed her eyes tightly and looked into his eyes. They were filled with sadness, she didn't expect him to show emotion, he hadn't the entire time. She sighed looking at the sky. "I-" she stopped, if she did end up like her mother. She already felt like what her mother did. She hugged him,"Don't leave." she said, looking up at him begging in her eyes. She didn't know if she could stand for something like that to happen to her. "I forgive you." she mumbled into his chest, closing her eyes. She needed him, she knew that. If he left, she would fall apart. "Just...don't leave." she said quietly. | |

He stroke her hair, a smile plastering his face.
"I won't. I promise."
Ben thanked the gods that Essie forgave him. In all honesty, he wouldn't know what to do without her. Sure, he had met a few friends that understood him as well, but not as well as Essie did.
The son of Thanatos disregarded his 'show no emotions' motto and let his smile grow wider.

| Essie looked up to see him smiling widely. She smiled, he wouldn't leave her. That made her smile even more. She sighed, she could see where in the camp they were from up there...but she didn't want to leave really. She liked it here, with Ben. She sighed nin happiness. "Do you want to go back?" she asked, looking at him. She didn't really want to, but they had been gone for a while. | |

He wiped the tears away with his sleave, and then scanned the horizon.
It must've been almost twelve o' clock. The forest below them wa dark--to dark for anyone to see, so it was almot as if it was a pool of black. The moon luminated the night, the only light in the sky other than the stars. He found the evening peaceful, relaxing; everything was at peace, including himself and Essie.
"I'd rather stay here," he replied in a soft tone. "I don't really want to go back to my cabin yet." Ben looked down at Essie, his eyes smiling with nothing but utter joy. "Besides, I'd rather be here with you."

| Essie blushed at the comment. "Good, because I want to be with you too." she smiled at him, his eyes were expressing nothing but joy. She sighed, "It's nice out tonight." she said, looking at the stars. "You don't see this in Brooklyn..." she paused and bit her lip, "Not really many places actually." She closed her eyes and leaned against Ben, listening to his breathing. How late was it? Was it so late that someone would go searching for them? She thought not, no one in her cabin paid attention to her...maybe people paid attention to Ben though. She sighed, she was getting tired, but she forced herself awake again. She hated sleep. | |

His cabin mates and half-siblings would eventually find out, then they would crowd around him bombarding him with the usual questions: "Who is she? Where did you meet?" He simply didn't have the patience for such interrogating, and he certainly intended on hiding it--of course, he respected Essie's opinion as well. He wouldn't mind if she told others, but that wouldn't stop him from acting the way he was now, or in this case, percieved to be.
"Yeah, it is." Ben couldn't help but count the stars, even though it was impossible to do so. There were numbers of them--numbers that people believed to be the number of souls that watched over the mortal world.
His attention returned to Essie. "Well, Brooklyn has a lot of light pollution," he explained, recalling a few scientific facts that he read in a book. He didn't venture further into the subject, knowing that Essie would become uncomfortable talking about her history.
"The month a satyr picked me up and brought me to camp, I would look at the stars every night. They sort of just . . . Captivated me."

| Essie sighed. She loved being with Ben...but did she want to really tell her siblings, in all honesty? She shook her head at herself, then turned her attention back to Ben. "I sort of just stayed inside as soon as I got here after...meeting a few certain people." she admitted. She closed her eyes again. Did she really just bring that up? Maybe Ben wouldn't bring it up, but...no one could resist the curiosity of what she meant. | |

He probably made the wrong choice asking. He knew well that Essie didn't like talking about her past, or at least, that's what he thought. He understood--it was difficult, especially when you're a half-blood. The ones that didn't have anything tragic happen to them before their years at camp were, in fact, the lucky ones.

| Essie sighed, "It's a...long story." she said quietly. She closed her eyes, "I guess it's not that long...but it has a lot of other explanations attached to it." she admitted. She couldn't get it to come out, it explained why she was messed up in certain areas, why people she knew from when she was little stayed away from her. Why she barely talked to any of her siblings. | |

| Essie sighed, "I do trust you...It's just...I don't like it." she said, sighing. She shut her eyes tightly while she explained, "When I came here when I was nine, there was one half-brother of mine that actually noticed me enough to help me out. He became like my actual family, considering I never actually had a real family." she opened her eyes and looked in the distance. "The short way to explain this is some Ares kids saw me training one day, and started to pick on me because I couldn't hold the sword. Josh got in between them and they got mad. So they continued to pick on me...almost everyday. Things got worse and Josh got really, really mad. So he stood up for me...and t-they killed him, in front of me." she felt tears threatening to fall. "I punched one of them and ran..got lost in the woods, and ended up getting really depressed." she finished the story suddenly because she couldn't say anything else without crying. She had to show him...she couldn't keep a secret that big away from someone who trusted her, and from someone she trusted. She would wait...wait for him to say something before she showed him. | |

Well, the camp expected that sort of behavior from Ares children, but some of them at least had the decency to back off when necessary--though, that did cease the son of Thanatos' rage.
"You're alright now, though, yes?" he asked calmly, holding back his actual emotions. He knew well his limitations, and if he got up and burst into a fit of anger right now, things wouldn't be pretty, especially with the abilities he was gifted with at birth.

| Essie swallowed, "I'm fine now..." she said quietly, she had to get up the nerve to tell him. "But...there's a bit more," she paused and took off her jacket quietly. Her bare arms becoming visible in the moonlight. Scars went up her arms, covering her arms. "Like I said...I got depressed..." she took a breath. She didn't like admitting what she did. She hated what they drove her to doing. "I stopped now though." she said looking at him, putting her jacket back on. She understood if her didn't want to talk to her, she was a freak with problems. She had lied, she still suffered from cutting herself, only if she got really mad at herself though. She put her head down. 'I will not cry.' She said, over an over again in her head. She prayed for once to her father to ask him to help Ben not to be to angry at her. | |

In a sense, he grew infuriated, but not at Essie; at the Ares kids. If they hadn't killed her friend Josh, or teased Essie, then the scars on the Apollo girl's arm wouldn't be there.
"What?" He gritted his teeth, but calmed himself before he made Essie think that it was her he was mad at. "It's good that you stopped."
Ben placed Essie's hands on her lap. "I wouldn't want you hurting yourself--I couldn't let you do that."

| Essie swallowed. She gave him a hug. "I'm sorry." she mumbled, tears were about to fall. She felt stupid for ever doing that. "Don't be mad at anyone...please?" she asked, looking at him, begging him. "They stopped about a year ago. Don't hurt anyone." she said quietly. her head going down. She sighed, putting her head on his chest. | |

Benjamin became even more concerned for Essie's safety, but not too concerned, as in a clingy sort of way. What if, for some reason, she started again? Wasn't it as her partner to ensure protection, and keep her out of harm's way?
"You have to promise me something as well. Please, whatever you do, don't start again. Alright?"~ I'm absolutely useless at night.

Essie gulped. "I-I promise." she said. She said sighing. How long could she hold in her tears. With every minute she felt like she was going to cry...she wouldn't though. She...she let one tear fall, then another, until they started coming down together. She put her head on His shoulder. She was useless. She was showing a weakness, crying. She hated it.

What could he do? Perhaps words of encouragement would be a good start, but then again, how long would that last?
"Go ahead and cry." This would be a shocking statement coming out of Ben's mouth for anyone that knew him. What, show emotions? Him, show emotions? "It makes you stronger."
Benjamin wasn't sure whether he would heed his own advice, he had remained in solitude for so long. Plus the fact that he didn't even want to listen to himself, and would rather remain the way he is now than change.~ It's okay, I'm getting some of my muse back. xD

| Essie looked at him. confusion on her face. A tear or two fell. "I don't like what I did Ben. I don't." she said quietly. Looking down again. She remembered when Josh had taken her here when she had just turned ten, they had slept there that night. She had fallen asleep on the very same spot that they were sitting in now. She sighed. "I hate my dad, I hate Ares, and I hate Hades." she said, sighing. She leaned against him, silently crying some more. | |

| Essie sighed, "I know." she said simply, shutting her eyes.
Essie nodded silently. "I hate him." she said quietly. "I hate what he did to my family." she said sadly. "He's the reason I had to drop out of eighth grade. He's the reason my mom was never home, and when she was..." she sighed. "I just...hate him." she finished.
