Essie snapped out of her thoughts, "Um...n-no..." she sighed, she couldn't lie to him, "Yes...?" she said quietly.

'Is there something on my mind?' she asked herself. Essie sighed, too many things were on her mind, she didn't really want to say it all. Like, her just having her first kiss, not knowing what he thought of her now, not wanting to end up like her mother, if he really meant what he said earlier about never leaving... so many insecurities were locked inside, it was hard for her to get them to come out. She had kept them hidden in the deepest darkest part of herself, that she no longer knew how she could et over them, or even how to explain them. "A lot is on my mind." she admitted after a while. She bit her lip hard enough that it barely bled. Anyone could tell tat she was nervous.

Benjamin tried to desipher Essie's thoughts through her body language. She seemed uneasy, her emotions clearly escaping to the outside world, causing her muscles to tense. Maybe it was a half-bloods common ADHD? No, that wasn't the case. Something was off about her, like something had struck her right in the face and brought her down completely.

Dead silence. Owl and crickets filled the gaps between the two teenagers, and it was the only sound heard from miles. The campers were aound asleep in their cabins by now, whether they had snuck out after curfew or not. No other voiced could be heard, and the creatures of the night roamed freely through the trails of the forest.

"A lot is on my mind," Essie said, breaking the reticence between them.

"If you need to talk, I'll listen." Ben was growing a little worried that Essie didn't fully trust him yet. Relationships were all about trust, yes? Perhaps she needed more time. "That is, if you want to tell me."

She sighed, "It's not that...it's just a stupid thing to wonder." she said truthfully. She licked her now bleeding lip. "It's just that...you meant it when you said you wouldn't leave..." she looked at him, trying to hide the memories from showing on her face and failing,"right?" she asked, she sounded like she was little child again, like she was nine. She remembered asking her mother the same thing the night before she died. She gulped. She was thinking too much about her mom, she had to stop. She bit her lip again, and old habit that she had picked up from Josh when she was little, now she always ended up bitting her lip too hard.

Benjamin wasn't sure what motivated Essie into asking such a question. The words rang in his ears, taunting him by repeating the inquisistion. He stared at her in bewilderment, his mouth ajar. He couldn't help but speculate. What made her doubt his statement? Was she recalling laborious childhood memories? What was going through her head right now?

Ben became curious, but also concerned. What if for some reason this whole 'them' didn't work out? Was it just the insecurity, indecision, and hesitancy that held her back? He could see why she would be so worried for her own safety--he was, and still is--though it put him down to see that maybe he hadn't earned her full trust yet. The road for this relationship might just be a little more difficult than most.

The son of Thanatos took a deep breath and said, "I promised I wouldn't leave, Essie, and I mean that. Why would you question that?"

Ben put his poker face on once again, hiding any sign of emotion and weakness. He didn't know what was coming, so he might as well be prepared for it.

Essie sighed, "My mom...after apollo left she was really depressed I guess, and when I was nine..." she bit her lip again, "s-she killed herself." she finished quietly. "I- I guess I just don want to think about ending up like her." she said, her voice held barely above a whisper.She sighed she didn't know how her mind thoght of all these doubts, it was like the inside of her depressed self was trying to keep her away from actually bein happy. She was fighting with herself, she tried making a mask, but it failed her true emotions showing though.

Benjamin's love for Essie was abundant, therefore it wasn't such a shock to him when he realized how concerned he became for her. Her mother commited suicide? Was that really what this was all about? Of course! That explained why Essie was so apprehensive. How could he have not have recognized the patterns! Almost every demigod had a tragic past--one that administered pain and fear, which would then eventually develop a different personality for that half-blood. Though Ben never really developed his 'mask' personality due to the tragic events of his own history, but rather crafted it for the use of his own security. Anyone that attempted to cross his walls without permission would immediately be annihilated. He could only ponder on the reasons why Essie had dwelled on her past for so long. Was there more to the story that she wasn't telling him?

It wouldn't have really been substantive if she told him the full--if there was more to be told--story of her past. Yes, he cared for her; deeply, though he understood well the boundaries others put up for protection. He was cautious with the emotions of others.

"I am sorry to here that. Is there anyway I could help you?" Ben pulled her close, remembering that Essie didn't really enjoy being pitied for her misfortunes, but he wanted to remind her that no matter what, he would be there for her.

Essie sighed, and wiped her eyes from small tears that had formed. "I just need to try t-to forget about it." She knew there was nothing he could help her with, what was done was done, but it caused her so much doubt in her life. She wished that she could forget everything about her childhood, forget that her mother was deranged, forget that she lived in the worst places possible. She wanted to forget. "Can we..." she closed her eyes tightly, preventing anymore tears. "Not talk about it anymore?" she asked, hoping that she didn't sound rude. She didn't want to have to explain how she lived in the most horrible housings you could think of in Brooklyn, or how she barely saw her mother, or whenever she did see her mother, it was right before she left for days. She sighed, she didn't want to talk about that, not now anyways.

She sighed, she smiled slightly at Ben, he cared so much for her. She could tell. She could tell he paid attention enough to know that she hated being pitied, she loved that he actually, truthfully cared about her. She leaned against him

Benjamin observed Essie wipe the tears from her eyes. Oh, those eyes! Eyes greener than the greenest of grass, softer than the most delicate of clouds. The way her straight, jet black hair fell down her back perfectly... Marvelous. It was still a mystery to him how could he deserve such a magnificent creature. He had done nothing but avoid his fellow campers, and his cabin mates whenever he had the chance. Was the moment that he and Essie met destined, or a coincidence?

The son of Thanatos snapped back into reality as soon as Essie began speaking; listening intentively as a gentleman. Once she mentioned that she didn't want to speak about her past any longer, Ben simply nodded; showing both concern and understanding in his facial expression.

Ben figured that after the night-- er, morning was finished, it would be appropriate for him to do something nice for his girlfriend. Girlfriend--the word was still fairly new to him, and he thought he'd never think nor speak it in his life. There were many guys that could easily wrap a girl around their fingers, and the only thing he ever did was listen and speak; a few others would usually manipulate.

"I'll tell you what," Benjamin began, "this afternoon, I'll take you out of camp for a little bit. You know, a- He could only muster a few syllables until he fully said the word. "Er, date?"

Essie turned so that she could fully face him, she had a small smile evident upon her face. She looked at him, how did she get someone that understood her? how could [i]she]/i] of all people in the camp, get someone who didn't try to manipulate her, someone as wonderful and caring as Ben. If any girl gave him a shot, or even if he spoke more...she was sure he would have someone better than her. She listened to him, right as he started talking, she smiled some more as he stumbled on asking her the question. She looked at him and gave him a hug, "I'd love to Ben." she said, quietly, looking at him smiling.

Benjamin nodded. "Okay. Were would you like to go? I mean, I've never really done this before, so..."

He stopped himself from trailing on, and waited for Essie to respond.

Essie smiled at him, she had never done this either. She bit her lip, "What about going to..." she sighed, what was somewhere sort of close, but not New York? She thought of her answer, "Can we go to New York?" she took a breath, "Anywhere but Brooklyn and Harlem?" she asked, looking hopeful. She hoped that maybe she could go, but she didn't want to run into anybody that knew her, which meant she would have to stay away from where she lived.

Benjamin considered the idea. He wasn't aware of anywhere in New York that he might no of, and with the fact that he never left camp for seven years, he probably lost all sense of direction he posessed.

"Yeah, we could try that."

Ben knew best to definietly stay away from Brooklyn, as it was where Essie used to live, but was also one of the 'bad' parts of New York. He didn't plan on getting jumped by a bunch of looneybins.

"Would you prefer dinner?"

"If you don't mind it." she said smiling, happy that she would get to see New York again. She leaned against him, a small yawn coming out of her mouth. She covered her mouth and sighed. It was probably somewhere around 3:00 in the morning, she had been gone since 4:00 the last afternoon, not like anyone would care. She looked at him, "I know some really cheap and awesome places in Queens." she said quietly. Sleep was definitely taking over. She tried to fight it, but her eyelids were shutting. She yawned again. "I'm tired." she mumbled, still leaning against Ben.
