Finnegan paces back and forth for a few minutes before finally stopping to shove the note under Toby's door. Inside the note are a set of carefully printed instructions telling Toby to meet him in the large clearing in the middle of the forest at six o'clock. It doesn't say what for, but that's not important. All that's important is that Toby shows up, without Toby the whole thing will be absolutely pointless. After he leaves the note, Finnegan quickly makes his way out of the cabin so Toby doesn't see him. He's got a lot of things left to do and it will be easier to do them if he doesn't have to talk to Toby.
After leaving the cabin, Finnegan heads to his cabin where he picks up a picnic blanket and basket. In addition to them, he grabs a box off of his nightstand and tucks in into the pocket of his flannel shirt. Now that he's gathered perhaps the two most essential items he heads towards the messhall. He's still got about two hours before Toby's supposed to meet him, but he doesn't think it's too early to get the food. Making his way to the kitchen he sets the open basket down on the table and begins to fill it with various items of food such as fruit, crackers, sandwiches, basically traditional picnic food. Which this time means no poptarts. Once the basket is full, he picks it up and carries it and the blanket to the large clearing in the middle of the forest.
Finnegan and Toby had discovered the clearing on a walk through the woods and from the look on Toby's face when they discovered it Finnegan knew it was the perfect place. Setting the basket down on a tree stump he spreads the blanket out on the ground in the middle of the clearing, before moving the basket to rest it on top of the blanket. Hopefully it will remain undisturbed, the clearing isn't exactly a popular destination and he's pretty sure the nymphs won't eat their food.
Standing up, Finnegan leaves the clearing for one final trip. This time he goes back to his cabin where he picks up a large shoe box that's sitting on top of his bunk. Inside of the box he's gathered several tea candles, a box of matches and a couple of flash lights. It's going to get dark out and they'll need some way to see, he just hopes that the tea candles will prevent a fire from starting. He would hate for the evening to turn into a repeat of the last time they went on a picnic.
When he reaches the clearing again, Finnegan begins to places the candles around the blanket, arranging them so they are still able to move about without having to worry about catching on fire. He doesn't light them as it's still light out, but he does set the box of matches down next to one of the candles. Once he's certain that everything is ready he takes a seat on the picnic blanket as he waits for Toby. He's incredibly nervous about tonight, and it's pretty justified seeing as most of his attempts to plan dates end in failure. But not this one, this one is going to be perfect. No, it has to be perfect.
After what feels like hours, but is really several anxiety filled minutes Toby finally arrives. Smiling, Finnegan stands up and slowly moves over to Toby. Taking his hand he quietly leads him to the blanket, before sitting down again. "Hi"he says quietly, as he stares at the other male. "I've got plenty of food, and I don't think anyone will be interrupting us"he says with a smile as he gestures towards the picnic basket. The whole time, Finnegan's eyes don't leave Toby's face.

Son of Hecate
It was only about noon when a small sound told Toby that a piece of paper had skidded across the floor. The boy had taken advantage of the empty cabin and the cool breeze coming through the window to do a bit of a home work-out. Nobody would walk in on him awkwardly, and of course he could always work out outside, but there were a lot of people out there to judge him, many of whom probably worked out a lot more often than he did. Out of mere social anxiety, he remained in his room, now on his third and final set of curl-ups. After his last, he crawled over to the sheet of paper and opened it, carefully reading it, a look of concentration on his face. Then, he read it again. And again. And slowly but surely, a smile made its way to his face.
Just before six, Toby stood in front of the bathroom mirror, heart thumping in his chest. Why? He was always so comfortable with Finnegan. They'd been on dates before, they've told each other everything about themselves, there isn't a thing that Finn doesn't know about Toby. Nothing to hide, and all emotions are straight forward. Except, why was Toby nervous? It was mostly because when Finn wanted to go on a date with Toby, he would usually just ask. It wasn't ever very formal, especially not enough to the point where a note was given instead of a face-to-face invite. Wearing what he hoped was appropriately handsome but not overly formal, Toby tweaked his hair ever so slightly with the tips of his fingers, doing just about nothing, before he decided that he was presentable. Letting out a sigh, Tobias Wilson left his cabin.
As he approached the clearing that the two had discovered the other day, he saw already the orange flicker of flame and instantly his heart beat a little more rapidly, remembering their last candle-lit picnic. And if things went wrong this time there was no beach water to save them. Still, Toby had to not let it get to him, and continued at a confident stride, although his fingers nervously played with the front of his shirt.
"Hey," Toby called out, seeing Finn approaching. The other looked appealing as always, but the glow threw shadow over parts of his face and neck, highlighting the curvature of his collar bones and cheekbones, giving off an even more aesthetically pleasing look. Again, Toby's heart beat a little harder, and he really wished he could tell it to stop. "What is all of this, Finn?" Toby asked, placing his hand into the others and allowing himself to be guided over to the picnic. It looked overall like the boy had planned out such an elaborate evening that the other candlelit picnic seemed slightly silly in retrospect. Toby took a seat beside the other and scrunched up his hands into fists, nervous to touch anything before Finn did.

Finnegan finds himself mindlessly patting his shirt pocket, checking to make sure the box is still there. If he's lost it, he might as well give up now. This entire picnic is pointless without it. Luckily he still has it, which is good. He doesn't need it now though, no that part comes much later.
Finnegan grins as he looks over at Toby, "Can't I just surprise you with a picnic?"he asks with a laugh, "Do I need a reason?"he asks as he raises his eyebrow. Oh he has a reason of course, but he's not ready to tell Toby yet. Actually it's not that he's not ready, he's just too nervous. This is a big step, and he's not sure Toby will want to take the leap. He sure hopes he does, but demigods usually don't live long so he's not sure how Toby will feel. He just hopes that he says yes, otherwise he's not sure what he'll do.
Still smiling, Finnegan leans over and opens up the picnic basket and begins to pull out the various items of food. "Come on, let's eat!"he says as he gazes up at Toby. At the same time he removes a carefully wrapped peanut butter and jelly sandwich and places it in front of himself, followed by a bag of chips, an apple and a bottle of water. He slowly opens the sandwich and takes a bite of it as he watches Toby. All he wants to do is just watch Toby, but he realizes it might be a bit too weird. So instead he focuses on eating his sandwich.
"I figured we'd stay until it gets dark"he explains as he takes a break from eating, "Light a few candles, maybe stargaze"he continues with a small grin. "Maybe we can even stay out here all night?"he asks as he turns to look at Toby, waiting for his approval. He hadn't planned to stay out here, but now that he thinks about it, it sounds like a pretty good idea. While he waits for Toby to answer, Finnegan picks up his sandwich and continues to eat it.

Son of Hecate
"I suppose you can," Toby mused. It wasn't like Finnegan hadn't done something like this before. Sure, he wasn't really the person to make up elaborate plans like these all that often, but he was always full of surprises and it wasn't out of the realm of possibility that Finn was doing this just for a bit of romance. If that was the case, it warmed Toby's heart to know the boy cared so much about him that he'd put this little ensemble together. Toby had kind of let their love-life drift to the back of his mind recently. Not that he began to love Finnegan any less, but he had just sort of taken it for granted. He'd come to accept the fact that Finn loved him and he loved Finn, and the two would be together without worry, and therefore making up these cute little dates and things became less important to him. Instead, he just basked in Finnegan's company. Seeing this arrangement made him feel a bit bad for letting everything lull.
Toby leaned forward and peeped into the picnic basket, examining the contents for food that he might like. It all looked like stuff that the boy could get out of the camp mess hall, but he didn't say anything. He wasn't unappreciative. He withdrew a wrapped sandwich, cheese and crackers, and a bottle of apple juice, sitting back on the blanket and beginning to consume his little meal as the other did.
"That sounds like a good plan," Toby said, after taking a sip of juice. He loved the night. He knew that Finn probably wasn't too fond of it, but the son of Hecate had spent countless hours in it's shadowy blanket and had come to feel extraordinarily comfortable in it. "I don't know if we can spend the whole night, someone might find us," he said, worriedly. "But if nobody does, then we definitely can," he tacked on quickly, in case it seemed like he was saying he didn't want to spend the night lying in the stars with the other.

Finnegan smiles as he watches Toby, "Well then let's not get caught"he says with a laugh. He then moves his hands to his lap, where he clasps them together in order to prevent them from shaking. He's somewhat surprised that Toby has mentioned his odd behavior, he must be doing a better job at hiding his nerves than he thinks. Either that or Toby doesn't care enough to point it out, he hopes it's the first.
With that he returns to his food, picking up his sandwich he takes another bite out of it as he quietly watches Toby. He can't help but smile as he does so, something about being with Toby just makes him happy. He's learned not to care about what other's think when he's around Toby, he knows that everything will be okay with him. Call it cheesy, but he feels safe and completely free to be himself.
As he continues to eat, Finnegan can't help but think about what he's planning to do. When should he do it? How? He planned out the picnic and everything, but never exactly how to go about doing it. He just sort of forgot, of course he forgot the most important part. He's such a goddamned idiot. Letting out a sigh he tries not to let out his frustration, out of fear of giving himself away. Quickly he returns his focus to his food as he begins to scarf it down.
"Do you remember when we got together?"he asks quietly, his voice barely above a whisper. "You we're so adamant about not being into guys, I had to convince you otherwise"he says with a laugh. "I'm glad I didn't give up on you"he adds, "I knew you were special, and I didn't want to pass up letting you into my life"he explains, starting to ramble. He's vaguely aware that he's most likely not making any sense, but he doesn't really seem to care.
As he takes a deep breath he reaches into his shirt pocket, his hand grasping the box as he slowly pulls it out. He's careful to keep it hidden in his hand as he moves it under his leg, for easier access. "What I'm trying to say is, you've changed my life Toby"he says quietly as he looks into his boyfriends eyes. "You've given me a reason to actually try being a normal person, not just some robot who spends all of his time reading. Although granted, I do read a lot"he laughs, "Thank you for giving me a chance"he finally says, as he begins to pick up the box once more.
Taking a deep breath, he moves the box into view as he slowly opens it to reveal a simple yet elegant ring. "Toby Wilson, will you marry me?"he asks with a nervous smile spread across his face as he watches his face for a reaction.

Son of Hecate
Toby wasn't really sure what Finnegan was doing. He watched innocently, sipping from his juice box. He figured Finnegan was probably just trying to bring up a time in their lives that, upon reflection, was foolish and they could laugh about since ample time had gone by. So, Toby nodded and grinned, all the proper reactions for the reminiscent mood that Finn was establishing. He almost began to reply, to say that he was glad that he didn't give up as well, but Finn kept going. Toby was a little bit surprised, but he was more intrigued with where this was going, so his eyes just focused on Finn.
"What is that?" Toby whispered, unable to sit quietly. He'd noticed the boy move something from his shirt to his leg, but hadn't an inkling of what it could be. His first thought was something picnic related. A food item? A candle? Perhaps it was a gift for Toby? A watch or something big that Finn wanted to precede with a picnic in order to build up the moment. Giving up on guessing, he tried to focus on Finn's words and found them to be incredibly touching. Not just the 'aw' kind of touching, but the kind that made Toby unable to stop smiling, his heart filling more and more with love for the other. He was glad that he had had such a huge impact on Finn's life. He wanted to tell Finn that he changed his life as well. In so many ways. He wanted to say that deciding to be with him was the best decision he's made in his entire time at camp. But, Finn kept going. And Toby kept listening. Suddenly, it hit him like a fly-away baseball.
A thousand things happened at once. Toby's stomach dropped to the ground, his heart felt like it rammed itself repeatedly against his rib cage, a ball the size of a grapefruit formed in his throat. His hands began to sweat, his vision became blurry either from tears or dizziness. He realized what was happening and his emotions went haywire. He wanted to cry. He wanted to curl up in a ball and start sobbing. He wanted to scream. He'd never thought anything like this would happen to him, and now that it was his entire future was shifting beneath his feet. But most of all, he wanted to smile. He was so incredibly happy that all the other emotions were just passing thoughts. They were like little fish and happiness was a blue whale. Toby's eyes slowly rolled down to the box, and he knew that the blurriness was definitely from tears. As he blinked, he felt the hot saltwater trickle down the side of his face.
"...." Toby opened his mouth to speak, but the catch in his throat was so large that he couldn't bring himself to form words. His tongue was so dry and his heart kept sending huge pulses of feelings with every single beat. All he could do was nod.

His fingers trembling, Finnegan takes Toby's hand in his and slowly slides the ring onto his finger He then re positions his hand so he's able to hold Toby's, squeezing it tightly. Words are completely unnecessary, just being together is enough. He's not sure he's even been this happy, actually he knows he's never been this happy. He just proposed for Hades sake, something he never really saw happening until he met Toby. The other male has changed his life, and he couldn't be more grateful. He's actually made it worth living, and Finn wouldn't give it up for anything.
As he turns to look at Toby, his face is engulfed in a smile. "I love you"he says quietly as he leans in to press his lips against Toby's. He slowly moves his hands to the side of his face, gently cupping it in his hands as his eyes flutter shut. He wishes that this moment would never end, staying here like this with Toby would be the best thing he could ask for in life. Because for once everything would be absolutely perfect.
Of course Finn knows he'll have to face reality at some point, and with that there will be some big responsibilities. Such as a wedding, what they're going to do after the wedding. He'd like to leave camp and move somewhere with Toby, but he's not even sure it's possible. Oh gods, he needs a job. It's this type of thing that even though it makes him worry, he's looking forward to it because it means he's finally accomplished something that means a lot to him. He feels successful in life.
