Guard duty. Something Emily hated a lot. She had asked Chiron if there was anything left for her to do and he had said of course, guard duty. She had said yes even though she didn't want to. Now she wished she could've said no. She didn't know who her partner was and she hoped it was someone she could actually stand. She didn't want any more drama, she had had enough of it already. There was one person who she really hoped wouldn't be her partner. Tobias. She hadn't seen him in a while and she wanted to keep it that way.

Emily grabbed her sword before making her way towards Half Blood Hill. Luckily, it wasn't that long a walk and she'd be there early. The moon sun was setting when she had finally made it to the top of the hill. Her partner wasn't there yet so she sat down next to Thalia's pine. The more she thought about it, she realized that she hadn't been on the hill in a while. Come to think of it, she hadn't been anywhere lately.

While she was waiting for her partner, she thought about her mom. She hadn't called her in a while. She wondered how she was doing, probably better off without her. Hopefully, no hellhounds had attacked them. She wouldn't know what to do if they did. She told herself then after guard duty and some sleep, she would call her mom. She hoped no hellhounds would attack camp while she was on guard duty. With her luck, they probably would and that was just make this night ten times worse. As she saw a figure approach the tree she said, "You're late."

Tobias hadn't really put his head on when he signed up for guard duty. Normally he would pair up with a friend or half sibling, but he had signed up without a partner, which meant it could be anyone. A murderer, a monkey, anything. He was just about to sleep for the night before one of his brother reminded him of his previous agreement. Groaning, he slid on a sweatshirt and pants before making his way back out into the crisp summer air. His knife was between his fingers as he twirled it, still jogging over to the hill.

A soft mist spread over the grass as the moon rose in the sky, lighting his way to the meeting point of guard duty. Whistling on his way, the boy's dark eyes shone, soon finding the form of a female near an opening in the trees. Hearing a voice, he instantly responded, "You're just early." It was only after he spoke that he realized the person he was speaking to. Emily. Tightening his grip on his knife, the teenager sneered. Her? Why did it have to be her? Tobias thought he had done well in avoiding her, and hoped to keep it that way.

"I'm sure you picked this hour just to see me, right Steel?" he asked casually, a smirk growing on his handsome face. He leaned against the tree he was nearest to, crossing his arms over his chest. "It's okay, I would want to see me too," he added with a chuckle. Tobias grinned on the outside, but observed her as she stood. The last time the demigods had been in contact was when he put her to bed after one of her drunken episodes. Remembering how that had ended, his smile vanished, running his fingers over the blade of his weapon.

Emily had rolled her eyes at the response before seeing who the figure was. Tobias. She immediately stood up with her sword in hand. Did it really have to be him? Of course the gods had decided to make her life miserable. She sighed. She only had to last a few hours with him. She couldn't remember how long considering she hadn't don't guard duty in a while. Hopefully it wouldn't be that long because she wouldn't be able to last that long and it would be awkward. She remembered their last meeting.

Emily scowled at his comment. She remembered that nickname, steel. He had given it to her the first time they met. That was a while ago and lots of things had happened after that. "Don't call me that and I did not. Chiron told me to do guard duty." She said a bit angrily. She had a few other things she wanted to say that weren't too nice, but instead kept them to herself. She wanted to be a bit more mature. But maybe she wasn't that mature considering what happened at their last encounter. And the one before that. The second to last one wasn't her fault. She hadn't been flirting with another boy. However one question kept bothering her. Were they dating at the time? She had just thought they were considering they had kissed at the capture the flag game.

They last time they had ran into each other was her fault. She took full responsibility for that and she regretted every time she thought about that awful night. She had tried to forget but she couldn't with people staring and whispering about her almost all the time. She wished she hadn't been so stupid. Emily had been so drunk she could barely remember what happened. She felt bad for Tobias who used to like her. But of course, none of this would have happened if it weren't for him. If it weren't for the New Year's Eve battle. If only she would've never went to the party. She sighed "I'm uh sorry for what happened last time. I just-" She paused. She didn't know what else to say. "I don't have an explanation for what happened." She said before looking away.

Tobias glanced over at her, any compassion and kindness free from his eyes. He didn't care. She had done enough to him, or maybe it was the other way around, he wasn't entirely sure. What he did know was that every time they seemed to meet, something went wrong. Someone got hurt. And honestly, the demigod was tired of pretending that he didn't care about it. He'd rather avoid her, it was so much easier.

Glancing over at her smaller form, he smirked at her disgusted expression. He prided himself on few things, his looks, sarcasm, and his ability to make others irritated. When Tobias had given her that nickname, he'd have never thought it would've stuck with her this long. If anything, it was an insult. "Sure, sure," he muttered, raising an eyebrow at the daughter of Zeus. After looking at her for a moment, the demigod determined that she was in better condition that the last time he saw her. That night was still clearly written into his mind, everything from the laughter of Aphrodite girls to the smell of whiskey on Emily's breath.

Sticking his knife into the side of the tree, the demigod turned back to her as she spoke. He smiled as she tried to find the right words, and came up with no explanation. In all honesty, it was eye opening to see someone so powerful at their worst. Of course, he never wanted to see her like that again, but it was something. Tobias watched her lips as she continued to speak, sighing as he tried to look down at the misty grass. Did she remember that night? Some of it? Any of it? He couldn't be sure. "Whatever," Tobias muttered casually, waving it off as he grabbed the hilt of his knife back from the tree's trunk. "Next time, don't have me picking up your mess," he spat bitterly, unable to look at her. The teenager had convinced himself he had moved on, but now? He wasn't so sure.
