'think you had it rough? (Vina)

Skyler was on watch duty - again. He really hated having to go hang around that god damned pine tree for four hours and watch to make sure that there weren’t any new campers. There never were. He resented Chiron for making him go do this. There were tons of other campers that did nothing, and Skyler didn’t want to have to make up for their laziness. He had to get up too early (Skyler was the kind of kid that would stay up until 3 am and sleep the rest of the day), before the kitchen was open, and sit there half starved watching the sun go up.

So on this muggy morning, he trudged up half blood hill feeling bored and eager to get out of there. Skyler had brought a book, but the fog was awfully think and his terrible eyesight meant that he probably wouldn’t be able to read anything. This was extraordinarily frustrating for Skyler. These watches were never interesting and only a monster would spice things up. At least he could smash around his sword (which he carried by his side) without waking anyone else up.

Skyler’s eyes were bloodshot and encircled in a large mask of blue skin. He looked similar to a racoon, if racoons got into fistfights. His hair was uncombed and messy - Skyler didn’t really care to brush it out if he was just going to sit on the hill from 6 am to 9 and no one was going to see him. Still wearing a white tee with several moth-bites in it (the same one he had been wearing at one am earlier that morning as he made his first friend in years), Skyler quickly regretted that decision.  The cold pierced his skin and the damp air condensed on his bare arms, leaving the boy shivering. Yet he made no move to huddle. Skyler was used to being uncomfortable and the cold didn’t bother him enough to make himself show weakness.

After focusing on his feet, which were monotony carrying him up the hill, Skyler looked up. In the distance, surrounded by fog, was an unmistakable figure. One Skyler had not seen for three years. Her curls, precisely a shade lighter than his own, bounced on her shoulder and Skyler stood in shock. He could not believe that he would ever see Isabelle Carstairs again. Just his luck.

And then there was a girl's shriek and Skyler groaned. There was nothing worse than a shrieking new camper. Yet her voice sounded very familiar - as if he had heard it before. Skyler frowned. Her dialect sounded very british for the states, but too dulled to be british, very much like his own.

And then Skyler was shaking. Shaking with fear and disbelief and he could feel tears streaming down his face and he felt so goddamn pathetic. His whole life was a lie and he knew before she called his name and he knew before he saw her face.

His family was alive - or was it just Isabelle? Had she somehow escaped from the monster that killed the rest of them? Skyler shook his head. He could remember her body on the ground - or was that just his imagination too? Skyer clenched tightly on his sword - so tightly that he would have marks on his hands for weeks to come. His family was dead. They were dead and he was imagining this and it was a bad dream and he would wake up to Kat and the rest of his life and eventually forget.

His eyes were red now and even if this was just a dream she could see him cry and that was the last thing he needed. So instead of wiping the tears from his eyes, he ignored them. Skyler could not prevent himself from shaking. He knew he looked angry and Skyler wanted to look angry - after all he was. Deception and lying was useless - Isabelle was the type of girl to think that she knew everything when really she knew nothing.

She didn't know of how goddamn lonely Skyler always was and even though he liked to be alone could they just try? She didn't know how cut off he was she didn't know of Kat (his best and only friend), she didn't know he smoked or drank or did all of that stupid stuff that he did because he really didn't have that much to live for and she certainly didn't know he was a halfblood. "Isabelle? Skyler said and his voice shook almost as much as his body.
