that's where my demons hide,
the library was the last place june had ever imagined herself being during a zombie apocalypse, yet there she sat. right in the middle of the library—shivering, starving, and filthy. blood covered her clothes, some of it her own, some of it belonging to the undead, and some of it being other demigods, kids on her side who had fallen close enough to june to muck up her outfit. not that what she was wearing was nice. she had a black tank top on, choosing the color because it hid blood best, and her only pair of jean shorts, unfortunately high waisted. she had a jacket, but it was buried somewhere in her blankets and pillow mound, which was on the other side of the library and she felt glued to her spot by the fire.

books burned before her eyes and all june could think about was her clothes. she' never been like that. maybe she was finally going crazy. like, crazy crazy. maybe killing her best friend in zombie form had pushed her off of the sanity cliff and into coocoo lake. probably. it was likely.

her vain thoughts were interrupted by a loud rumbling in her stomach. the library was suffering from a major food shortage, and june hadn't eaten in two days. it was making her grogy and causing her to lose focus, which didn't happen very often with the usually hyperaware trained warrior. shutting her eyes and turning to whoever was next to her, june whispered. "do you.. have food," she mumbled, her voice weak from underuse. squinting her eyes, june tried to smile. "i'd trade you anything. you want a knife? i've got three." the cabin leader's mind wandered back to how she ended up in the library and she practically growled. she had been with a search party for her cabin, but had been attacked by a couple zombies and the library reluctantly let her in, but wouldn't let her out, no matter how many times she screamed and threatened their lives.

she could use some company. she needed someone to talk to, really. about normal things. normal worked for june. normal was different, and she needed the change of pace. "i've tried leaving so i can go back to some place with food, but whoever's guarding the door apparently isn't afraid of the infamous june prenston." scrunching up her face sourly, june wiped he hand across her forehead, smearing some of the dirt that was there. or maybe it was blood. or maybe it was both. "in any other circumstance i would have all my crap together, but.. this has just not been my zombie apocalypse."

Zombies. His first memory ever and it had to be zombies attacking. Not only that but books were burning. Cody didn't like fire, and he was blocked off by one. He didn't exactly know why he came in here, he just did. Upon observation he had seen the library nights before, noting that during darkness, the windows burned bright with flames. Cody decided it was best not to go in here. But yet he did, feeling brave. Cody wasn't brave. He wasn't a hero. He almost didn't hear a girl's soft voice next to him. She asked for food and would give him knives in return. Cody looked at her. The black tank top she wore was obviously soaked with blood, though it was hard to tell. He would pity her, but he didn't know her story.
"I uh..." Cody thought for a moment. Considering his options. Giving her the little food he had would result in him going hungry for the night. But if he didn't, she clearly would be his enemy for all time. "Yeah. I do." He said, and forked over the last of his trail mix. He watched them sadly pass into the other girls hand. "I don't need any weapons. I have my sai's," Cody said, whipping out his forever frosted weapons. They were not made of metal, as the other campers swords and daggers. They were made purely out of ice that would never melt and could only be touched by Cody. It was ingenious, really.
The girl talked some more, breifly saying that her name was June Preston. She also hinted that she wanted to go to a place with more food. Cody couldn't help but agree. Usually, the memory-less boy was of no help to anyone, but tonight was his lucky night.
"I think I know a way out of here," Cody said, standing up on wobbly legs. Fire made him weaker, and the flannel shirt he was wearing didn't help in the slightest. "There has got to be a hole in the wall or ceiling somewhere. We find it, break through it, and we're free." Cody really hoped this wasn't a stupid plan. What did he know of the library's structure? Even if they did get out, the zombie's would surely get them once they stepped foot outside. Good thing that Cody had powers.

i feel the love and i feel it burn,
june gratefully and a bit greedily grabbed at the trail mix the second it was offered. she probably would have taken the food even if it hadn't been offered, she was selfish that way, but it went down easier knowing that someone was helping her. for once, there was someone on her side. things didn't feel so hopeless when you didn't feel completely down on your luck. "i don't.. it's hard for me to express gratitude because of... personal issues ... but i'm grateful right now." june didn't want to tell the boy about her illness, her mental disability, her label, but she wasn't going to eat the food and not say anything. she didn't say sorry, she didn't say thank you, and she certainly didn't give compliments. it just wasn't something she thought was much of a priority. now though, she couldn't afford any more enemies.
as she ate, smacking loudly and chomping down on the small amount of chex left in the bag, june listened to the boy talk. she was pretty relieved that he didn't want her knives, those reminded her of caleb. she needed to keep them. one of them was his, actually. the newest looking one. that thought burned painfully in the back of her mind as she stood up, following the son of khione. "tell me what it is, first. i'm not doing something stupid that gets me killed." or anyone else. june didn't feel the need to add it, it wasn't good for her image, but she was done with people dying because of this stupid attack. june crossed her arms boldly as she popped her hip to the side. "i'd rather starve in here than die a fool." maybe that wasn't true. june had adhd just like everyone else, on top of her sociopathic tendencies. she was active. she didn't like sitting around waiting for death to find her.
"i can break it, if we find it," june immediately offered, flexing without realizing it. she didn't have much muscle, but she was so strong. stronger than the average boy. "stronger than the average bear" she remembers once joking. back in the good day. before all this darkness. "we should take anyone who wants to go. we have a better chance that way," she added, her leader instincts kicking in. she had a desire to protect. these people, her siblings and the others, were practically pack. and june was an alpha.

Cody wasn't sure if he was selfish or not. Ever since he'd woke up in the ditch a couple of miles from camp half blood, all he had known was his name and how old he was. He barely even knew what he liked, which was cold things, and what he didn't like, which was hot things. All that Cody needed was an escape from this fiery land of paper and ink, and he could continue searching for who he really was.
He looked above him, trying to find a weak spot in the roof. The windows to the library were open, but he wasn't about to climb through those. They'd be easy targets for the zombies below. June said she could break a hole in it if Cody could find it. Which was fine with him. He wasn't all that strong. The powers he had were abnormal, but that didn't mean that he was physically strong. Plus, the powers he had were controlled by emotion, not summoned like normal.
June wanted to take others. Cody didn't. What if the zombies did get to them below and they didn't survive? He would never be able to live with the guilt and thought of causing their untimely deaths or turning them into the undead. But he merely shrugged the idea away. June was right. They would have a better chance. Cody ignored the comment about dying a fool. No matter what half-bloods did these days, even if it was mildly heroic, there was always a mishap that made you a fool before you died.
"There," Cody said, pointing to the middle of the ceiling. Smoke had curled around a big spot, making it turn grey and black. "the heat must make the ceiling soft. We could get up there and you could break it." As much as he hated the idea of climbing through the ash and fire, he had to do it for his ultimate survival.

june silently followed the boy as he examined the ceiling. "if we're not careful, we could cause all of the roof to collapse," she mumbled, pacing back and forth slightly. this wasn't a good plan, but it seemed to be the only chance they had. "help me move that self," june barked, nearly running towards one of the shelves that wasn't being burned in the fire. the fire was a stupid idea. everything about the library was a stupid idea, which shocked june, considering it should have been where all the intelligent people were gathering. oh, that's right. the entire athena cabin was in her cabin, with food and security. that's where she needed to be.
were they doing okay without her? it had just been a few days, and they still had james and faye, but june liked to think that they were struggling at least a little bit without her vicious guidance. snapping her head towards the khione kid, june gritted her teeth. he was going to help her get out, and she needed to become accustomed to that fact. "ready? push." june threw most of her body weight into the shelf, panting and feeling her legs shake. the shelf started moving, though. that was all that mattered. june's lungs filled with ash as she took deeper and deeper breaths, and her head started spinning. closing her eyes june gave in, just for a moment, before remembering caleb and needing to get away from the books. he would have liked being near all the books. he would have complained about them burning them. he would have wanted to leave, too.
for a moment june really went crazy and started to believe that the boy next to her was caleb, he was acting similar, really, but that was the smoke and physical strain getting to her head. "we really need to get out of here," june moaned. they weren't attracting much attention, considering everyone was sidetracked and suffered from vision distortion because of the ash in the air. it was growing worse and worse the closer to the fire you became.

If Cody was June, he'd be skeptical about his idea as well. It wasn't as if he was the brightest kid here, as there were probably some Athena kids in the library. Cody was at a loss for words. He wasn't going to say 'Just trust me.' because he didn't even trust himself. "Well, we'll just have to be careful." He said, before she barked an order for him to push a bookshelf. He didn't see how he could be much of a help, seeing as he was skin and bone, with barely any muscle. Still, with their body weight combined, they managed to push it. Cody felt lightheaded, his throat and lungs on fire. And then it happened, one of his many powers came to him in the front of his mind like a rushing tide. The air around him became considerably cooler, feeling nice on his skin.
He didn't know how long it would last, and once they got to the part of the ceiling, it would certainly extinguish. Cody hoped that it wasn't to cold for June. Being a son of the ice goddess, you could handle extreme freezing coldness. Other campers, not so much. It wasn't like he was purposefully trying to give the girl frostbite, he just couldn't control his own powers that well yet.
"Agreed." Mumbled Cody. His vision was getting hazy with smoke. He clambered over the toppled bookshelves and unattended fires until he got to what he hoped was the weak spot. He hoped that June followed, because he couldn't break down the ceiling on his own.
"Climb that," Cody ordered, pointing to a mishapen thing that could be used as a ladder. "Use whatever you have to break it." He remembered what she had said about rescuing other campers. "I'll get others that want to come." The air became colder still, every second he stood still made the atmosphere around him a winter wonderland. Well, if he was going to die, this was the way to do it.

i'm just doing what we're told,
june was already climbing up the shelf when she felt the temperature drastically drop, and before she realized what was happening, she found herself clinging to the shelf for dear life. it had caught her so off guard that without even realizing it, she had nearly lost her gripping completely. after surviving so much, enduring so much, this was not going to be the way she was going to go. falling off of a bookshelf. that was pathetic. the shelf wasn't extremely tall, but if she fell from where she was desperately clinging to the corners of the shelf, at the angle she would fall, it would be enough to kill her.
wrapping her arms more solidly around the shelf, june started to inch up, sucking in deep breaths as she climbing slowly. her toes dug into her sneakers which dug into the wood of the shelf, and she felt it shaking as she herself shivered. her muscles were locking up in the cold, and she was having to work ten times harder in her new awkward climbing position. "you couldn't have activated that little power earlier, mr. freeze?" june groaned, never missing an opportunity to complain or give out a nickname. almost everyone she had ever talked to had a nickname. it helped her not to get too attached. only in one case had nicknames made her feel ever closer to someone, but she couldn't even think about caleb when she was in such a compromising situation.
like a koala hugging a tree, june slid up the shelf slowly, finally reaching the end and throwing herself onto the slat surface of the top of the shelf. she panted heavily but the boy's powers didn't seem so insanely cold when they weren't causing her to slip off of a high ledge. "i'll do my best," june whispered, nodding at the boy before climbing the stepping stools that were stored on top of the shelf. usually they were used to reach books. now they were being used to escape them.
a smile spread across her face when she heard what the khione kid said last. he was going to get others. she instantly dropped the smile though, before anyone could see, and nodded firmly. her hand was already clenched into a fist and she was feeling for a weak stop in the ceiling. she would have to hit just to the side of the weak stop to prevent ceiling collapse. turning back and nearly losing her balance, june gritted her teeth. "wait—" june shouted, her eyes tearing up from the smoke and her lungs filling with it. she coughed several times before going on. "i don't even know your name."

"My powers." Cody explained. "I can't control them. They just come and go with my emotions." Though why the temperature dropping one decided to show up now, he had no idea. Just like everything else in his life, he'd figure it out later. He watched June climb the stepping stools to get to the weak spot. He stood there for a moment, contemplating on whether or not to help her. He decided against it, besides, he had already said that he'd go get others. As he turned on his heel, he heard June call out, he turned back.
"If we don't die, I'll tell you." He shouted back. And with that, he ran off back into the burning library.
It would be stupid of him to call out 'hey we're climbing out the roof, join us!' so he told himself to go up to smaller campers that were alone, and ask them one by one. He turned a corner, skidding on his heels for a quick stop. Really. He thought to himself. Are people that idiotic? I mean, some campers sure, but Athena children? Up above him, he saw that a large beam in the ceiling had caught on fire, and it was quickly spreading from corner to corner. It wasn't a supporting beam, so if it fell, the whole roof wouldn't collapse. Still, if he wanted to save people, he would have to do it fast.
He saw four children, not much older than ten, alone. Cody jogged over to them, hoping that the coldness that surrounded him like a wintry aura didn't scare them. He told them what he and June were planning to do. They all nodded in agreement, and he directed them to where June was. They all ran off, and Cody felt a sense of pride in himself from helping them. After all, if the library burnt down because of reckless stupid people, they wouldn't have to suffer that fate.
The fiery beam above them gave a shuddering sound, and Cody only had time to look up before it fell, the flames being extinguished by the air. It fell on the young Khione camper before he had time to move. He was unconscious before he hit the floor, with the heavy wooden beam on top of his legs.
