but i know i'll die happily,
Cambley stared up the tree the turned to Elijah. "I've never actually been to the treetop village," she confessed, knocking on the tree. "Too many spiders for my liking. But it should be fun, right?" Cambley was nervous. Running into a spider more than fifteen feet in the air? There was no way that would end well. It wasn't even the height Cambley was afraid of, it was the damn arachnids that inhabited forests everywhere.

Cambley had dragged Eli to the forest, wanting to bond with the boy that she knew so little about, yet talked to on such a regular basis, but she hadn't exactly thought her plan through. It wasn't that she was a wimp or anything, but if there was anything Cam was afraid of, it was the eight legged miniature monsters. "Never mind, I'll be fine," she self-assured, straightening out her camp shirt and flashing Eli a smile. "My birth father would laugh at me, being so scared of something I've hardly ever made contact with." The Athenian's voice was slightly more hushed when she talked about the dad she left behind, the one who surely worried himself sick for years, who probably blamed himself for losing his daughter that one day in the pub. She missed him, sometimes. She didn't really talk about him to anyone, because most people didn't understand, but she think about him a lot.

"You were adopted, right?" Cam shouted over her shoulder as she began climbing the ladder that led to the tree houses. Eli and her were more group friends. He was someone she hung out with when her closer friends wanted to hang out with him. It wasn't often they were alone, and Eli—as she discovered pretty early on—wasn't very open about his personal life. Cambley didn't have a problem with that. There were things she didn't talk about either. Most her friends didn't know anything about her past, only that she wasn't born when they were and some modern things still confused her. Especially computers. They were far too complicated for her, even considering her Athena brain. Her dad would have liked them though, especially because they gave normal people access to sites like ebay. "I was, too... adopted, I mean. But.. um, you probably knew that." It wasn't really a secret that Cambley was a Lotus Casino kid. Most of them were pretty well known around camp, and surely it had come up in small talk conversations she had had with the boy. People usually wondered. There was something different about her that people some how always picked up on.

"I miss my dad," she stated boldy as she climbed, too far up to back down, now. "But there's something about adopted parents. It's like family you can chose, you know?" The way Cambley spoke, it was obvious she thought about this a lot. She sounded well aware of was she was saying, rambling but not quiet rambling because every word was spoken with intention. "Well, you can't exactly chose your adopted family, but there's still choice. I like that."

never taught me how to heal the pain
Seeing as he wanted to spend nearly every minute of his waking minute outside, Elijah had jumped at the chance to go out with Cambley when he had realised that his brothers and closer friends had been busy. He just needed to get out while the sun was still out and shining high, and he wanted nothing more than to do so. He just looked up when Cambley spoke, squinting at the high canopy yet squinting as the sun glared through the cracks. "Really? This was one of the first places I came when i got to camp." he admitted, throwing her an eye roll, "Whimp."

Rubbing his sweaty hands on the leg of his tracksuit bottoms, Eli didn't do much more than follow after Cambley as she led him into the forest, his brown eyes flickering around the surroundings that he knew all too well. He just offered the girl back a smile - which was crooked, I may add, due to the fact that Elijah had a wonky jaw - yet he looked over at her when she went on to talk a little quieter, his gaze inspecting her for a moment as he tried to understand why she had dipped the tone in her voice. "Would he?" He questioned, trying to keep the conversation flowing yet not trying to seem too curious as he didn't really mean to pry, "Most people are scared of things they've hardly ever made contact with, though, right." Wasn't that why they were scared of them; because people fear what they're not used to?

Cambley started climbing the ladder ahead of him, yet Elijah reached down to tighten the shoe laces on his sneakers for  quick moment before he chose to follow on after her, closing the gap she had made quickly and being just a metre of two behind. He was fast and nimble on his feet, thanks to his God-parent, but also he didn't mind venturing higher. It reminded him of back home where he would practically live in the woods, so he always felt comfortable around woodland. But Cam's questioned startled him a little as he didn't really talk about himself - which was understandable, seeing as he had been through a lot - so he hesitated tentatively on the step his was climbing up. "Um, yeah, I was." Eli answered, taking another moment of silence in before figuring he had to go on a little and explain himself, seeing as Cambley was just being friendly, "Yeah, I heard that. But, uh, I was. I have two Dads. It's alright." He left out the bit in which they thought he was currently lying in a ditch somewhere, most likely dead; running away didn't help your concious when you had an imagination.

"Me too." He stated thoughtfully, the small yet personal sentence just slipping out and not even realising that it did. he nodded along with what Cam said, even though she couldn't see the action, and just continue to clamber up behind her, "I don't know my 'mom', but - from what i've heard - i'm glad that i got my family now instead of being stuck with her. She probably couldn't even look after herself."

i'm addicted for life, no lie,
Cambley gasped, trying to sound offended but failing miserably and mostly just sounding dumb. She hated sounding dumb. "I'm not a wimp," she sighed dramatically, offering Elijah a bemused smile. "There's spiders up there," she whispered suspensefully before she silenced herself to stare at the system of rope bridges above her head. It was all extremely fasicanting to her architecture-oriented, Athenian mind. The genius to the place was mind boggling.

Cambley nodded without turning back to look at Eli, her stomach tying itself in knots. "He would call me silly for not being afraid of the British yet being terrified beyond my wits of a few treehouses." Cambley shut her mouth quickly but it was too late. The British comment had slipped out all too soon. That happened sometimes, when she got lost in her own thoughts. "Of course, this is the 1700's we're talking about, so things were different. Just a little." The redhead scoffed, but she smiled genuinely. She liked talking about her past, but talking about it led to getting caught up in it, and the hurt that came with missing her father was the most painful kind. "I mean for starters we didn't have Apple." Brush it off, nice Cam, nice.

Cambley smirked to herself upon finding out that she had been correct in the adoption assumption, proud of herself forr remembering the little detail about Eli. That was a good start to a friendship, remembering things, and while Cam could remember almost everything, it felt really nice to get something about a person right. "I didn't really know many gay couples from my original time, but my parents were friends with a few," Cambley offered, not wanting to make too big a deal about it but feelings compelled to say something. Something to show that she wasn't going to make fun of Eli, at least. "My parents were basically professional demigod adopters. My big brother, and I've heard there was a brother before him, but he..um.. I think he died." Cambley made a face but she kept climbing sturdily. She had never been told this, but she was really good at picking up on details. Sometimes it was a blessing—her intelligence—but too often it was a curse.

Cambley risked looking down to offer Elijah a comforting shrug. "My dad and I didn't really talk, I didn't really talk at all to be honest. He was a good man, but.. we weren't close," Cambley lied. She didn't want to gush over how much she missed her father. Lying was easier, and she could at least pretend to relate to Eli. She did like her adopted family, she liked being able to pick them, but she hadn't had any say in leaving her dad and that was the problem. "How're your dads?" Cam asked, always curious and always prying.
