Quinn Myerz
The light peeked through the top of the trees causing the floor to be speckled with interesting patterns of those above. I kicked a few rotting leaves to the side and shoved my hand grudgingly into my pockets. My left hand brushed against rough leather of the small notebook I carried around; my right felt the tang of the cold metal of my pocket knives. My fingers curve around the larger of objects, shifting the tool in the position that would be easy to whip out the blade and fight. It's not that I was scared, oh no. It was the fact that I didn't trust these words, nor the people in them. I didn't trust a single living soul, except maybe nature. With nature, if they die, you didn't have a close connection to them that could trail you down more. Forming a close bond with something like a tree would be completely ridiculous. It didn't talk back, it didn't joke around, and most importantly, it couldn't hear.
I was in a feisty mood. That's why I had decided to take a walk in the cool forest. It had been a sudden idea, so I was still in my long jeans, my polo shirt, and my light grey beanie. I felt slightly out of place among the trees in this attire, but nobody was around to judge so it didn't matter too much. Dragging my left hand out of my pocket, I brushed down my dirty blonde bangs, pushing them closer to my dark blue eyes. I paused in my walking, taking a deep breath. Everything was quiet except for the twirping and calling of birds in the distance. I was about to continue when I heard the snap of a twig. In an instant, my right hand was out of the pocket, my knife was drawn, and I was standing stiffly. The sound had come from behind me. Turning slowly, I swept my gaze between the trunks of the trees to see if they were on the move. "Well, hello there." I called out crookedly. "Can I help you, or are you content with just checking me out?" I let out a small chuckle, a smirk sliding across my lips as I started to face another challenge, one that I could most certainly face and win.

RAZIEL SWIFT✰
Raziel looked down at her open palm. The small many-petaled flower lay in her hand in full bloom, golden like the sunlight peeking through the canopy. She watched it warily for a few seconds, her lips set in a tight line. Then she brought her other hand up in a lazy wave and flames obscured the marigold in a rush, turning it into a ball of fire crackling merrily in her hand. The once yellow petals melted into black ash that trickled down Raziel's unharmed flesh before settling on the forest ground. Raziel sighed as she shook the last sparks off. Her unique way with fire amazed her and - as much as she didn't want to admit it - scared her at the same time. Fire was unpredictable, hard to tame. It hated control. It runs wild when left unchecked, a growing force that is difficult to subdue. Fire was much like Raziel herself.
The forest was eerily silent as Raziel plucked another flower. Most creatures had learned to avoid her at all costs, what with the fiery games she played. Running her thumb across the soft petals reminded her how dangerous it was to let herself loose in a place like the forest, but it just had so many things to burn. It gave her room to practice without being watched. It was a lot less pressure on her shoulders when campers were not throwing her cautious looks every time flame roared to life. Here in the forest she could let go, dancing with the flames that were her friends, studying how to rein them in if they went too far. Granted, there had been a few close shaves and a little part of her wouldn't be too surprised if a forest fire happened, but that made it even more urgent to learn. Raziel had to learn control.
The twig crunching under her Nike jolted her out of her thoughts. Raziel cursed under her breath at the lack of subtlety. She didn't really know why she was sensitive to the sound, considering that no one usually ventured to this part of the forest, but it didn't take long for the feeling to make sense. Her ears picked up the slightest swish of a knife cutting the air and she whipped around, spying someone past the tree trunks before her. She could tell that he wasn't appropriately dressed for a leisurely stroll in a forest of all places but she wasn't one to talk - what with the smugly-fitting shirt and jeans she wore. The air grew tense and so did she, boldly stepping out of the thicket to make her presence known.
"No, I'm not satisfied with just checking you out." Raziel smirked, her eyes fixed on the delicate flower she held as she walked. She came to a stop a few yards away from him and finally looked up, appearing completely unfazed by the weapon pointed at her. "Might I ask why a fine lad like you would wander off alone in this dangerous place?"
