| ace ashfield son of hades It was almost as if Ace had never left and no time had passed at all.
The same short, messy black hair, the same perfect posture, the same stern storm sky eyes, and the same ever-present scowl on his face. He sat casually on a certain daughter of Nyx's bunk, looking completely at home as he flipped through a short novel. In the other hand, he flipped a slim, oval-shaped dark stone between his fingers. It was roughly the side of half his hand and sparkled as he flipped it.
In the three months he had been gone, he'd mainly done a lot of thinking. But he'd done it in Australia. That's where he had gone for the majority of that time - Australia. His skin was a little more tan and he even had a small sunburn on his nose which he scratched at idly, scowling as soon as he did. Savannah had wanted to go with him but she still had to go to school and their parents seemed to strongly oppose the idea of even just him going, so they didn't push it. Ace loved it. It surprised him because he hadn't been expecting much from the trip at all, but he loved it he did. It hadn't been too hot like he'd thought it would be. And he was alone. It had been a long time since he'd had some time entirely to himself.
But he did miss some things. Some people. And he knew fully well that he couldn't stay in Australia so he had packed up and returned to America two weeks ago. He spent some time at home and thought things over a little more before, inevitably, returning to camp. He thought he hadn't belonged, but the more time he spent away, the more it just felt... wrong, like something was missing. Maybe in his case, that someone was missing. Ace prided himself on his self-awareness so he meditated on it a little bit before heading over to the Nyx cabin immediately.
His guess was that Colby would be mad. Livid, even. She wouldn't want to talk. But she was going to have to listen to at least a minute of his blathering before she threw him out.

| Colby was in a pretty good mood dispite being mid summer. She normally would 't be eager to get up around this time of year but after breaking records of sleep lately she had gotten before Kaia, her dobermin, wanted to go out. After getting sidetracked, and taking her time it took maybe two hours until she finally returned home. Colby entered her cabin and released Kaia who ran off. Then Colby kicked her runners from her feet before she even noticed him. Once she actually looked up at her bunk and seen him just sitting on her bed Colby went though many thoughts on how to handle the situation.
She thought she had been coping, it had been three months, she had surely gotten over her emotions enough to think clearly. What she meant to do was calm approach and demand he explain himself, apologize, and leave at the same time. What she did do is back herself closer to the door and threw a shoe at his head. Granted it wasn't the best of ideas, she wanted to leave and wait it out until he left even if it took days, but he obviously seen her. Colby couldn't really speak enough to yell; however, she felt herself quickly getting over it. Glaring hard at Ace she crossed her arms very tightly over her chest calming her rapid heart rate and unsureness. It would be so much easier to be angry at him if she wasn't so relived to see him. Jerking her head away from him she got a handle on her words. It came out harsh and shakey.
"Nope, you left, you're not suppose to come back if you leave."
Colby swallowed the knot in her throat and blinked away at her eyes. Her eyes were definitely watering from anger and happiness it was hard to tell which one was more prominent. She didn't want him to leave, not really, but she didn't want to go through losing him again either. Backing up away futher until her back touched the wall she once again tried to regain her composure. She could yell at him to leave, he may listen but then again it's Ace he may take a nap on the floor until he was forgiven. She could tell herself she could force him out but would be a lie. Still refusing to look at him she decided to stand here and wait him out.

| ace ashfield son of hades Now that he was actually facing her, all his plans and confidence melted away. As soon as he heard her voice, Ace was hit by a wave of remorse, at once so stifling and suffocating that he struggled to breathe. Why had he ever run away and left her behind? A wrinkle formed in his brow and he stared at her intently, the hand tossing the stone stilling. After everything, he was surprised but unsurprised to find that she was still exclusively and exquisitely Colby. Still dark-haired, green-eyed, ivory skinned, beautiful Colby. Even so, Ace regretted being away for so long.
"Colby," He exhaled, quietly, carefully. He stood up tentatively but kept his space from her. Even though he wanted nothing more than to hug her and never let her go again, he was afraid she might push him away and then run and he'd lose his chance to explain. He'd chase her, of course, he wouldn't let her go that easily but he didn't want to risk making her more angry than she already was.
"I know you probably hate my guts," He started, tossing the stone nervously in his hands again. "But I'm going to make a pathetic attempt at explaining myself now, and even the barest minimum of your attention would be appreciated because I'll just repeat myself however many times it takes if you don't listen this time." He sucked in a breath and began to explain. "I don't know where to start, so I'll start here." He placed a hand over his heart. "Sometimes I just get so angry with it all. The gods, the expectations, camp, everything. I've been thinking about it for such a long time, and I guess in March, I just made a decision."
"I'll admit that I left because I was going to join Kronos." Ace didn't falter or look away as he spoke, looking Colby right in the eye. "But in the Army, everything is all anger and pain and... Maybe the gods aren't perfect but they're better than whatever future Kronos has to offer, if that's any future at all. I couldn't join him, it wasn't right. Plus," He swallowed and closed his eyes. "I thought about what it would be like if I met you on the battlefield. You on one side, me on the other. And in the end, that was the deciding factor. So that's why I'm back." He finished, opening his eyes and staring at her steadily.
"I'm not going to apologize for almost joining Kronos, but I am going to apologize for not talking to you face to face before I left and for leaving you the worst letter in the history of letters. If you hate me I completely understand." Even though I love you.

| Colby was still overwhelmed by Ace standing in her cabin. Keeping her arms crossed tightly and her eyes focused anywhere but him she shifted her feet to move around the room. Maybe she could escape this encounter without getting to upset. At the sound of her name she looked up for a brief second, quickly drawn to his stern grey eyes before darting away again. Ashfield Colby silently replied. She looked back at him when the springs creaked and Ace stood up. Soon enough he started to speak and Colby found herself watching him fiddle with some type of rock or stone. Her own fingers rubbed raw circles into her upper arms.
That's not a bad assumption, is it? She immediately thought as he started and wrinkled her nose as she often did when she had an opinion or thought. Colby had spent so much time just wondering what possessed him to leave and if he was ok. Hearing it now, putting those thoughts to rest and stirring up new questions made any attempt of disinterest futile so she met his stare with her own. Kronos’ army. Colby knew Ace always held a bit of a grudge against the gods, especially Hades himself. Her eyes probably gave away most everything she was thinking as he continued. If I met you on the battle field ' the idea was painful itself but she wasn't sure if she accepted that reason. When Ace's speech ended Colby was quick to drop her gaze away from him again.
She was silent for a long moment before deciding to speak again . "I don't hate you. I hate what you did; I hate you left like that. Gods know I hated that stupid letter. And myself for feeling so hurt over it all." Her eyes were still watering but she refused to uncross her arms to wipe them away now. "I - I wish you would of said something more. I knew you weren't always happy, but not so much that you would leave like that. And to join one of the many things trying to destroy this place" that lump in her throat was back and Colby paused. He may have hated camp, wanted out, she did to, in fact most everyone here was tired of being here. But it was also her home; it was home for a lot of campers. It wouldn't be easy to overlook that. Her nails were digging into her arms now but she hardly noticed. "I understand you not joining it, but coming back? Why come back?" Ace could have done something else. He could have went somewhere far, ran away from everything happening.
Even if he tried he didn't do a very good job because he was standing right there, and although she wanted nothing more to embrace him she wasn't sure she could. She wasn't sure it was still her Ace standing there. She moved a little farther across the room, getting closer but still far out of reach. Glancing at his face she took a few seconds to enjoy the familiarity of it. Defined features, scars, messy hair, he looked the same but it wasn't enough. "You're right though." Colby's voice was quieter, cracking a little but lighter toned then it had previously been. "That was a pathetic apology, you're supposed to actually ask to be forgiven."

| ace ashfield son of hades His heart thumped painfully when she moved away. Ace didn't know what he would do if she thought he was some kind of monster. Her words stung but he didn't go back on what he said. "I don't hate camp, but I hate everything it represents." He shook his head. "I'm sorry." There was still so many things to apologize for - how could he even try to be specific?
"I'm not entirely sure why I came back," He said, his voice thick. "I was in Australia and it was great, having time only to myself, not having to do anything I didn't want to do. But I couldn't stay there forever, and I knew that." He swallowed. "And Savannah and mom and dad were still here, and they would have to suffer the consequences of whatever happened, and it killed me knowing that. Knowing that I was running away without even trying."
Ace had never run away before. Not from a fight, not from home, never. It was his thing, he was steady. As steady as a rock. He thought to himself pensively. He had never even considered running before a few months ago. And he knew why now. Because running away wasn't escaping. Everything you left behind was still in your heart and you couldn't run from that. Maybe you could train yourself to forget, but it was always there - in the back of your mind. And inevitably, you came back. But you had to deal with the consequences of returning.
When she moved even farther away, Ace sighed. "Still a smart ass, I see." He allowed himself a small laugh although it quickly died. He walked over to her carefully. He pressed the stone into her hand and wiped the pads of his thumbs over her cheeks to wipe away her unshed tears. "That's for you - a black opal from Lightning Ridge. I'm so sorry, Fiser, and I sincerely hope you can forgive me. I missed you."

| Colby nearly cracked a smiled back at his comment. She had been deprived of all interaction with him. From their petty arguments to soft touches and left with a letter and a lot of time to think of the best and worst. While she had not wasted all her time, spending it was her friends and pets. Strict training and a hand full of adventures from camp there had been a hole left. It wasn't like she didn't understand his reasoning, she could. She couldn't relate very well, but she understood.
When Ace finally closed the distance between them Colby couldn't help but flinch back just a bit. She did allow him to wipe her eyes and accepted the stone, but otherwise kept a bit of distance. Now it was really her time to talk. Her first reaction was to ball her fist and punch Ace square in the shoulder. Looking up at him with her arms at her side Colby begun. "Do you know how much danger you put yourself in first off all? You could have gotten hurt or eaten for all I knew and I would of never known. I'm sure it wasn't a spur of the moment decision and probably very hard to do. I mean it's not the first time you disappeared. Last summer you went back your family. That was ok; you didn't have to say anything to me." Colby the stone tightly in her hand and moved her other hand she had previously used to hit him. "But Australia. How hard would it of been to send some type of 'hey I’m ok'."
She didn't mean to go off like this. And really she could have been much worse, but there were things that she needed to say. Her arms still had imprints from where she had dug her short nails in. Standing barefoot in her cabin and nearly yelling at Ace it was no wonder Kaia ran back to stick her head back into the room. Amazing no one else had stumbled in yet as well. She shook out her hand again.
With her emotions high a wave of lightheadedness hit her; the room seemed to spin slightly. Dipping her head down and biting her lip to clear the sudden dizziness, Colby had to pause. Summer still had its affects and most everyone who lived in this cabin had experienced them. While it had been better lately, the events had obviously been over whelming. When it passed she looked back up but with less fire then before. Reaching her hand out to his arm she gave in and leaned her head against his chest wrapped an arm around him tightly. " I'm sorry. But I missed you so much, and I couldn't help but worry about you. I'm still not ok with everything. But I am glad your back, even for a little bit, Ashfield."
