A r y n n B e a u r i f t “You’re mad, absolutely bonkers. But I’ll tell you a secret. All the best people are.” - Alice in Wonderland, 2010
Craziness by Jason Westlake
Uncertainty lies on the path ahead Many events I don’t want to deal with Are sure to question my fearless resolve My heart I know will be wrenched many times
I may lose my faith and lose my way Submitting myself to certain torture Mountains loom ominously in my way With signs of “death to those who enter”
I gasp for breath just thinking about it Sweat beads down my face as I look on How drunk was I to choose such a path? What madness possessed me to go this way?
Why am I not relaxing on the couch Sitting safe and sound in my ignorance? I sure feel like claiming insanity From purposely subjecting myself to this
But my reason, my ‘why,’ yanks me off the ground It drags me by the arm and throws me out the door Purpose makes me feel crazy at times But it keeps me going when I don’t want to
✠ B A S I C I N F O R M A T I O N Birthday: December 1, 1994 [16]
Gender: Female
Greek Deity Parent: Dionysus
Mortal Parent: Alessi Beaurift
Pets: Never has she considered adopting a pet. They’re troublesome and sure to die under her care.
✠ S P E C I F I C I N F O R M A T I O N A Brief History: People have their own definition of what a mistake is. Things never meant to happen, things never meant to be. Others warp the meaning. These people call a mistake something that they did, but refuse to look back upon. For Alessi Beaurift, a daughter of a famous vineyard owner, her child is what you call a mistake. She was born mad, you see, delivered only half sane. Dionysus says the poor girl was cursed- even he could not reverse its effects. It was the type of mental disease that the victims had to overcome by themselves. So Alessi gave her daughter up. A few months after Arynn’s birth, she was given to an orphanage.
They locked her up in a cold, dank, and humid room. The grayness was monotonous and there was hardly ever any splash of color around. Caretakers would leave food for the shivering child, but that was all they did. Someone helped her get dressed until she was of age. And attendants would check her every few months or so. The other children heard screams coming from that room every night, sometimes even murmurs and pleas for help. They didn’t dare answer lest the headmistress punish them. Eight years of Arynn’s life passed until she could not take it anymore. During one of the monthly attendant visits, she lost it. Arynn mentally tortured the employee to unconsciousness. A month after, the orphanage sent her away to the mental hospital saying she was dangerous and beastly.
She was, of course, put under heavy attention. Therapy and daily visits to the doctor were part of her agenda more than anything else. Another three years passed until Arynn finally learned how to control her emotions. Her fits rarely occurred after these thirty-six months of learning how to open up. The doctors and nurses grew rather fond of the child and would often stop by her room even if she wasn’t their patient. She, however, never told them of her talent to control people’s minds. Arynn was afraid they would send her away again.
The rest of her days in the hospital were spent for education. History, Math, English, and Science. Her room was always cluttered with papers, and somehow the hospital wing Arynn occupied was brought back to life. Why, all the staff members knew her. Though, like all things, she couldn’t stay forever. Dionysus brought Arynn to camp on the day of her fifteenth birthday.
Physical Appearance: The doctors in the hospital described her to be really pretty. Thus they took the chance to dress her up and teach her some beauty basics. Naturally, Arynn strives to look neat. She braids her vibrant red layered hair with purple ribbons that sort of match the thick strands’ violet undertones. The braid- which is usually a french braid- reaches just below her shoulder blades. Her full side fringe is never clipped because she’s trying to cover the fading remnants of a deep gash on her forehead. Too bad she can’t cover the different scars decorating both her arms. Arynn used to scratch herself with overly long nails when she was in the orphanage, so she has a wonderful variation of different sized scars ranging from pink to brown in color. Oh joy. Other than the hair and arms, Dionysus told her she was the spitting image of her mother. Deep set almond shaped eyes that look like an icy shade between blue and purple, a straight nose of normal length and lips that are somewhere between full and thin, all framed by an oval shaped face. Even their bodies were roughly the same in proportion. They were the same type of slender with subtle curves, and the same five foot four inches despite age difference. Arynn, however, refuses to wear make up unless it’s a special occasion. She settles for keeping her skin clear and dewy. Before they went to camp, Dionysus not-so-gingerly gave her money for shopping. Arynn came back with a load of skin care products. “You could pass off as an Aphrodite child!” he chortled before clearing his throat. For this demigod, taking time to feel good and look good is another form of therapy to soothe tension build-up.
Personality: Through Arynn’s first year in Camp Half Blood, several people have learned- the hard way- that she keeps to herself most of the time. It’s been a difficult adjustment for her. Up to now, the culture shock is still quite intense on her emotions. She’s learned to stay away from others when angered. There was this incident where she accidentally sent three campers to the infirmary because she had one of her fits. Apparently, they were teasing her because she didn’t know much about Greek Mythology. The three campers didn’t wake up till two days passed. Arynn apologized, oblivious to the fact that people were being more cautious around her since she was also being cautious around everyone else. So the feeling is mutual. When it’s your first time meeting Arynn, she’ll seem cold. She’ll take you in with her calculating gaze and only reply when necessary- usually with nods and small flicks of her hand. First impressions are obviously a big thing for her since it’s hard to gain her trust. Despite the hospital’s treatment, she’s still very sensitive. Arynn takes the smallest things very seriously, even if it’s just a completely harmless joke that wasn’t meant for insulting anyone or anything. Because of her time in the orphanage, Arynn is afraid that people will lock her up again; never heard, disregarded, and in utter solitude. So she strives to get her message across. Just don’t agitate her too much otherwise you’ll arouse an anger which even she has no control over.
Arynn only gives bits of herself to the people she becomes close with, never fully or wholly because she doesn’t want her emotions to be tossed around like some kind of ball. She is an extreme handful, but fiercely loyal when you’ve won her over to join your side. After all, a lot of the things worthwhile are things worth waiting for. Not that she’s that fantastic. Rather, befriending Arynn can teach you all sorts of lessons. Think of it as a blessing in disguise.
Fatal Flaw: Her flaw is her quick temper. It’s exceedingly short and unpredictable.
Demigod Abilities:
Unlike her siblings, Arynn can’t control vine growth. She can’t make wine or any other drink appear in front of her, she could try but failure is almost always guaranteed. Her mind control skills are a bit more powerful and dangerous though. Not to mention uncontrollable. You see, she can only use these abilities in full power when she’s having one of her insane fits. If not, well, the effect is more limited but powerful nevertheless. Arynn can pass out after continuous usage.
Weapon/s: She has an arm length sword which she rarely uses. It’s made of Celestial Bronze, but painted over with a glimmering silver coat of paint. The hilt is studded with deep violet gems and the weapon itself is surprisingly lightweight. Its name is ζήτημα θέλησης or Zitima Thelisis. Directly translated, it means ‘Mind over Matter’.
✠ O T H E R S
Arynn has always dreamt of owning a glittery dress- the ones you see in fairytales. Yes.
- Spoiler:
"Who's she?" "What's with her hair?" "Oh, that's Petra."
Patrice "Petra" Osborne "You have just been Petra-fied! Zap!"
Birthday: November 11, 1993 [17]
Greek Deity Parent: Zeus
Mortal Parent: Alexis Osborne
Brief History:
Believe it or not, Petra came from humble roots. Her mother, Alexis Osborne, was a dance teacher employed in Juilliard. Time and time again, she’s tried to convince her daughter to take up ballet, saying that dancing was in her blood. And Petra did, though only for a few quaint years. Afterwards, she just settled to watch her mother dance on stage or in the small rehearsal room in their apartment. Alexis always made dancing look easy; like she danced on air, and felt no pain whenever she went en pointe. Still, this life was monotonous and bore Petra. School, home, school, home, school, home. The cycle just kept going on, until the day she found out she could control the flow of electrons in their home appliances. Her mother had no choice but to bring her to camp at the age of thirteen.
Personality:
Petra has always had this sixth sense for adventure. Raised in an apartment, studied in an ordinary high school and never really went out of the country with her mother, she’s always had some sort of longing to get out. Camp Half Blood offered that chance for her. Since that fateful day three years ago, she’s had her eye on one thing. Not a boy, music album, piece of clothing or jewelry. Surprisingly nothing material, since they all come and go. And finding love isn’t exactly appealing to her. The one thing Petra has had her eye on is receiving a quest. She’s trained countless hours just to prepare herself for what she hopes will come across her path soon. Plus, she has a gut feeling that there’s something greater out there for her. Like there is actually something worthwhile to do with her life and abilities. Something that will leave her with a feeling of contentment, or fulfillment. Petra possesses a different kind of determination- bravery or courage, if you will- that keeps her going everyday. Some like to call it hard headedness or being delusional. Well, whatever it is, it’s what sets her apart from the other campers. It’s her most observed trait.
When she’s not sparring or doing activities that only require her self-presence, Petra finds time to talk to her fellow demigods. She’s not biased or stereotypical, so she basically talks to anyone. Then again, she is quite ignorant when it comes to judging others. As long as she manages to get along with everyone else, she’ll be happy. People who’ve met Petra can tell she has this easy-going and goofy air about her. Sometimes it has a little fiery kicked into it, but that’s only during some occasions. Most of the time, Petra is dismissive of faults and often tells others to calm down or ‘chill out before they explode’. She likes making witty comebacks and sharing horribly corny jokes that repeatedly end up making her laugh instead. Alright, she’s no good at sarcasm. And she isn’t a top notch comedian, but at least her sense of humor is- even if it’s barely- in tact. However, Petra has also learned the importance of being serious and getting the job done. The war going on has definitely left her on edge and taught her how to prioritize events and schedule activities in order of urgency.
Being a child of Zeus has its perks. You get awesome powers, weapons that blow your mind away, and a pretty cool reputation. But there are times when this all gets into your head and leaves you too self-assured. Petra has a tendency to be over-confident. During these times, she thinks she’s the right one and will stand up against anyone who proves her wrong. There are several instances where she’s too thick-headed to admit her faults and will usually end up debating with the campers- or deities (yes, this can happen)- that contradict the ideas she shares. Petra, being who she is, is exceedingly capable of bearing a larger than life ego. It’s best to nod and agree with her if there are instances where she’s flaunting something off, otherwise she’ll be over dramatic and display a very unnecessary fit of anger then eventually swear to hold a grudge against you. She will apologize though, just give it time.
Physical Appearance:
“She’s just being creative. You know that stage during adolescence, I’m sure.” Petra’s mother would always reply with a shaky laugh to her co-performers whenever they’d inquire about her daughter’s fashion sense. You just can’t seem to picture Petra in a tutu or pointe shoes anymore. She used to carry her mother’s grace and regal look. Brown hair up in a bun, atmospheric steps and soft movements, and pastel colored clothes. Sadly, Petra has grown out of that stage. She only recently had her already layered hair dyed a soft platinum blonde, and went to the same salon to add baby pink and magenta in some strands’ ends. Whatever she does to try to flatten it doesn’t seem to have any effect. Her hair always seems to be on end, looking like she teases it daily for volume, but she really doesn’t. In fact, you can even see sparks of blue static electricity running through it when she’s extremely angry. Truly electrifying. Petra also has a full side fringe to cover her forehead which she believes to be large. Thankfully, her crown of platinum hair doesn’t seem to look too dry.
Other than her hair, the only thing that’s undergone massive change is her wardrobe. Petra now enjoys wearing oversized brightly colored shirts/ tank tops, shorts, and simple slip-ons. Back home, she usually wore layers of jackets and corduroys. So you can imagine her mom’s shock when she came home with a bunch of shorts instead of the familiar velvety material of corduroy pants. But, of course, her almond shaped icy blue eyes, slender five foot five stature, and oval shaped face have remained constant. It seems the only facial features she inherited from her mother are her arched eyebrows, and a straight nose of normal length. At least there’s some similarity, right?
Fatal Flaw:
Petra tends to become too prideful of her achievements.
Demigod Abilities:
In fairness, her progress in three years is impressive. Petra has managed to fully utilize the flow of electrons within her body to send static shocks of any controlled amount throughout an opponent of any mass. She can also hover a few meters away from the ground for a maximum of fifteen minutes before passing out in exhaustion. As for weather control and summoning a strong bolt of lightning from the heavens, she could try but with only a half chance of success.
Weapons:
Petra has a gold locket which, when thrown into the air, turns into a double sided axe. It’s made entirely of Celestial Bronze and has been painted gold to a fine polish. The handle has a single Greek word carved on it: απολιθώ which translates to ‘Petrify’ in English. Petra would rather call it ‘Petra-fy’, actually. She uses this weapon to channel her Electrokinesis during battle. It’s also rather lightweight.
Pets:
Arvid is a bald eagle who is, strangely, completely white. He does have a few cluster of golden feathers and black spots here and there-- not to mention a sharp beak! His eyes are a molten gold with light brown flecks and his talons are quite sharp. Unlike most pets, Arvid isn’t caged and is free to roam around wherever he pleases. You can be assured he’ll fly back to Petra when she needs his assistance. She doesn’t really need to call him out loud, he somehow feels it.
Other:
She calls the monster’s she’s paralyzed with static shocks ‘Petra-fied beings’.
Awaiting Approval Accepted Characters on Hiatus/Need Their Layouts Edited- Spoiler:
Catherine Heartnet Daughter of Demeter Female 16 years of age/May 5, 1994 Years In Camp: Two years. Year rounder, occasionally visits her hometown. Mortal parent: John Heartnet Physical appearance: The family’s nursemaid back home always said that Catherine is a perfect depiction of innocence and youth because of her short (5”2’) and slender stature. To further emphasize this, the nursemaid would try to braid Catherine’s long chocolate brown hair with laces and flowers. They’d both end up laughing as the braid turned out looking like a messy ponytail. Catherine was- in truth- rather pretty. Fair skin, long brown hair, flushed cheeks and rich mahogany colored eyes that always seemed to sparkle and laugh. Her father said that she took after her mother’s looks. But Catherine doesn’t know how her mother looks like. Personality: Catherine was raised in a small townhouse that overlooked a creek. It was a lovely Victorian styled home with pale yellow walls and white lace curtains. Just in front of the house was her father’s ranch. They owned several livestock and horses; Catherine was even given the liberty to name some. If she wasn’t out in the fields with her father, she was probably trying hard to read a book through her dyslexic sight. It took a long time to finish a single book, but she managed. And when a book was finished, Mr. Heartnet would drive off to the closest bookstore and buy another.
No, Catherine wasn’t spoiled in the least. If she was, her personality never showed it. She’s a very liberal minded girl with a calm facade and a heart of gold. Her head may always seem to be up in the clouds, but she’s always ready to lend an ear or a hand. Probably, the value she gives most attention to is the value of integrity; Catherine always strives to be respectful, ethical and honest. It was a habit she inherited from her father. Though there are times where she can be too ignorant and end up drowning in a pool of self-pity, she’ll always strive to look at the bigger picture and pick herself up. Pets: She owns no pets, for she believes herself to be too impulsive to own any. Weapons: It isn’t exactly a weapon, rather it’s a tool- if you could say that an enchanted bangle is a tool. The mystical accessory was given to Catherine anonymously, and, yes, she did have her theories on who the generous benefactor was. When she saw it on her bed back home, it came with a note that said the bangle was dipped in the River Styx then purified to counteract the effects of the water on the metal. So, instead of draining the life off Catherine, the small silver bangle absorbs large amounts of Nature Energy then distributes it to her whole body in small amounts; making her last longer in battle. In fairness it does look fashionable. Abilities: Catherine’s chlorokinesis skills are well developed because of helping her father with the corn fields in front of their home. But, of course, she’s still learning to use them in battle; for quicker defeats and larger monster casualties. Her baking skills aren’t half bad either. Other: Recently, she’s been borrowing chemistry and engineering books from the Athena Campers. Who said that Demeter kids aren’t allowed to do research on alternative energy and fuel?
