Jinan was born in a small village in Morocco called Oued El Marsa. It was a very traditional, Muslim-dominated village on the coast. Jinan's family, being Hindu, faced a lot of prejudice in their village They were often criticised for their religious practices and this is the main reason why Jinan is weary to openly admit to being Hindu today. She was only a small girl when they left Morocco, boarding a ship to Canada. Her father got a job in Cape Breton working as as a crewman on a fishing boat. This left Jinan and her older sister, Yasmin, home alone often. Their father would be out of contact with them for weeks, sometimes months, at a time. His excursions slowly became more drawn out, longer affairs. Jinan stayed as busy as possible to take her mind off of missing her dad. She took up archery which she practiced in the forest near their home. She would bring rabbits home for dinner, sometimes even fish if she was lucky that day. Yasmin wasn't the biggest fan of the gory sights but, it kept them from having to use the small amount of money that their father left for food. So, this kept her from complaining too much.
Until Jinan didn't come home one night. Yasmin didn't worry for the first couple hours, but it soon became dark and Jinan never stayed out past sunset. She quickly set off to look for her. This took Yasmin deep into the forest in the dead of winter, which was not a very forgiving space in Cape Breton. Freezing to death was common, falling through the ice was common, death was a very real concern for her at this point. This realisation set Yasmin's nerves even more on edge. She whipped through the forest as fast as she could with her huge winter boots weighing her down. Little did she know, Jinan was right around the bend of trees Yasmin was following. A rustle in the dead trees startled Jinan and she let go of her notched arrow, listening carefully for any sign of impact. Yasmin gasped as a sharp pain shot through her neck. Looking down, she saw the long piece of metal protruding from her throat. A scream escaped her throat, partially muted by the blood that was pooling her mouth and spilling down her chin. Jinan recognized the sound immediately and ran in her direction. Yasmin died moments later, endless apologies falling from Jinan's lips into her older sister's hair as she clutched her tight to her chest.
