Faye McJean | Faye needed to clear her head. The people around her, that really mattered to her, tried to understand what was going on, but it was hard to communicate what she was feeling. Part of her was too proud to admit that she was struggling, and the other part of her was begging for help. She was torn, but said nothing about the subject. Everyday she simply woke, studied, trained, ate, and slept. It was a healthy routine, but her relationships and mental state were far from healthy. And she knew that. She just didn't know how to fix herself.
So she, as any child of the wisdom goddess would, set out on an intellectual adventure. Rain poured from endless grey clouds as Faye drove through the city of New York. Her destination was the American Museum of Natural History. She hadn't ever been, and she figured now was as good of a time as any to go. Faye was looking forward to having time to herself, but she also knew she was only stalling herself. Hopefully the architecture would be worth her time.
Parking was impossible, but eventually she was in the back entrance, gazing up at a smaller version of the solar system. Galaxies covered the white walls, sending Faye spiraling into their false oblivion as she absorbed the information available. A younger version of the demigod had dreamed of exploring the space beyond earth, but now she had decided that she would leave the stars to those that could reach them. After about an hour of exploring she sat down on a bench, flipping through the pages of a flyer absentmindedly. outfit bby

craving their blood
James skirted around the corner, not only almost tripping over his ankles but skidding nearly into the path of oncoming traffic. He risked a glance over his shoulder to see if the gang were still in hot pursuit and, upon realizing they were right behind him, set off with all the might in his body. He barged into person after person as he barreled down the sidewalks, cutting through alleys and trying to shake those chasing off his trail quickly. who would've thought they would be so offended over a passing remark about their 'btec' clothing.
((james really had to stop being such a smug jerk and start balancing his responsibilities more)).
A quick spark of motivation set him hurtling up the stairs to his right until he was suddenly bursting through doors in a last-minute escape plan. He knew there was little chance of the gang following him in here, seeing as they would definitely be stopped by security, so he made his way over to a bench to catch his breath and relax for a second after all of that. He didn't want to attract too much attention - living out in NYC for nearly a year had taught him that too much attention caused distractions and slip-ups - yet a brief glance at the girl besides him sent a cough spluttering out of his throat in a smothered surprise. "F-Faye??" he frowned, not really believing what he was seeing. "but what are you doing here?"

Faye McJean | Faye hadn't spent much time in New York recently. The big city had lost its charm years ago; now it only held lost dreams and painful memories in the busy streets. She knew she didn't have it bad, people had worse experiences in New York. However Faye's memories always seemed to associate themselves with places and smells. That one highway. The scent of a hospital. The forest in the springtime. Everything brought her back to a past experience. She hadn't ever visited this museum before, though, so everything here was fresh. She could fill this place with new memories: happier memories.
The demigod was speed reading through the theater presentations for the day when she heard someone take a seat next to her. Faye wouldn't have looked over, but the person was breathing rather heavily, as if they had been running. Her eyes instantly widened as her mouth opened, the name James on her lips just as he sputtered out the name Faye. She hadn't seen him in months and now that he was in front of her, she didn't know what to say. "Learning," she muttered, eyes still scanning his face. Was this really him?
Her lips eventually curved into a half-smile as she whispered, "What are you doing here?" Faye always dreamed up a laundry list of things that she would say to him whenever she saw him again. It always seemed horribly cliché in the moment, though, so she kept her most private thoughts to herself. Anglining her body towards him she added, "I've missed you." outfit bby

At the first, the demigod was skeptical that faye was even sat here in front of him, seeing as the chances of him just running into her like this were very slim. But when it finally sunk in, and he heard her return with his own name, he knew that it wasn't just his imagination running wild. He closed his mouth and sat up straight, swallowing the lump in his throat noisily. He didn't know if the Fates could be playing one huge and cruel trick on him, but he approached the situation with as much hesitation as he could muster.
It took a moment for James to process her reply within his mind, yet when he did, he frown turned into a roll of the eyes, "learning, of course. how could i forget, nerd." He didn't want faye to think that he was staring at her, but his uncertain curiosity could not stop his eyes from scanning every part of her: he had tried to dwell little about her since moving away from camp again, because he had realized that staying at camp had not helped him in any way, so he would have to leave camp and faye in order to fix himself.
((that was his justification, at least, no matter how selfish)).
With his hand, he pushed back stray strands of hair from where they had escaped during his chase, and rubbed the back of his neck with an uneasy laugh, "oh, you know me, i'm always game to spend my time in..." he paused for a moment, his eyes flickering to the signs around the room with a dumb expression, "uhhh...wait, where are we?" though clear that he was not the sharpest tool in the box, he shook himself out of it and pressed his lips in a small smile as he looked dead at faye once more. "i've missed you too." he admitted, clearing his throat deeply after as he felt slightly out of his comfort zone (it wasn't like he had really been in the presence of someone important to him in a long time).

Faye McJean | Her mind instantly registered his once familiar scent. It was faint, but it was him. The entire world seemed to freeze as her eyes continued to trace over his face until she was sure that this was actually James Carter. The process took longer than she had intended, but she couldn't help it; here was the boy she had admittedly loved, right in front of her, and she couldn't believe it. Faye could, however, feel an invisible wall between the two of them. She knew her side of the wall was painted with deep, repressed emotions that she hadn't been able to share. The demigod wasn't sure what color his side was.
She decided she wasn't going to ask.
Faye couldn't recall how long it had been since she had seen those icy blue eyes roll at something stupid she had said. It sent an angry wave of guilt and want rushing down her body. She wanted desperately to take his face in her hands and kiss him - just to prove he was really there - but she wouldn't (especially not with him inspecting her so intensely). A laugh escaped her lips as he asked about their location. "The Hayden Planetarium," Faye answered. "It's a branch of the American Museum of Natural History."
His smile melted her insides and warmed her cheeks, but still she wondered - had he really? Faye wasn't one to talk though: she was planning on leaving for university next fall. The two of them - destined for one another or not - could never really work. They were a true Greek tragedy. "I'm glad," she replied, her smile never faltering, but never growing. outfit bby

The initial shock of seeing Faye here in the first place was wearing thin, and it left the eighteen year old feeling an array of emotions that he had suppressed from a long time, one of them being the anxiety that sat in the bottom of his stomach. He didn't feel like he was really ready for this, especially without any preparation beforehand. He had barely gotten himself a place to stay with a few old half-brothers in the city, getting his money from relatives and the odd couple of times he would win a large sum at poker night, so to have bad memories brought up suddenly didn't sit easy with him.
((it wasn't that faye was just a bad memory to him, but seeing her reminded him off all the bad things they went through)).
James could not stop the corners of his lips curling up into an even wider smirk when the girl besides him laughed, the sound ringing through his mind as it had many times before. He didn't want to admit that he had no clue where they were or what the building she was mentioning actually was, but he decided that it would be best to just nod his head in agreement, brushing it off completely.
"so am i." he murmured, scanning fay'e expressions softly. in the past, he would not have even hesitated to reach out and brush his fingers against hers, but now the idea just worried him a little, so he tried to keep his hand close, "how have you been? At camp, I mean. you're still there, aren't you?" He knew that she was still there, of course: he had his little brothers and sisters keep tabs now and again, just for peace of mind.

Faye McJean | A younger Faye would've wondered why James had left. But this Faye knew that Camp Half Blood wasn't for people like James. It was for people like Faye, who felt as if she owed the camp for saving her from the outside world. It was for people who needed to protect themselves and looked to others for that protection. Faye had once felt safest at Camp Half Blood, but now she knew that safety was an excuse. She was growing away from the cabins, the woods and the training arena. Faye wouldn't belong there much longer.
The demigod could still feel the unspoken tension, even as James smiled. Faye didn't know what it was, but the feeling in her gut told her that something, something was off. She looked down at her fingers. They were close enough to his that if she wanted to she could've grabbed his hand. But she didn't.
James' question caught her off guard, despite the mundaneness of it. How had she been? "I'm fine." Faye chewed the inside of her lip. "I mean, I'm doing alright. Camp is pretty boring," she clarified, her shoulders shrugging as she gave him a weak, toothless smile. "I'll be going to University next fall, though." A weight lifted itself off of her shoulders the second the words came out of her lips. She was going to continue her education. There was a life for her after Camp Half Blood. "How have you been?" This small talk was toxic, but Faye didn't feel like she could say anything else. outfit bby

then the uncertainty came, and james sat there without a clue on how he was going to act. a part of him wanted to leave completely and panic alone and another wanted to stay as long as she please. but james wasn't so much of an idiot to see that she was being as distant and wary as he to her. despite this, his natural smug nature couldn't help itself from remarking, "that's because i'm not there." once he had said it aloud, he felt a heavy weight on his shoulders at the reality and brutality of his words, and immediately wished he could take it back, but only gritted his teeth and frowned in another direction.
before he could even begin to answer faye's next question, two familiar faces in a large group caught his attention, and it took his slow mind to take a second to realize that two of the gang members chasing him had taken their hoods down and followed him in. 'That's just cheating!' He knew that they hadn't saw him yet, but he hoped to move away from the lobby as quickly as possible. He knew that he would probably be fine in a different section, but this was pretty 'peak*'.
James knew what had to be done; he turned to faye with a slightly uneasy but unwavering smile again. he didn't exactly want her to know that he was currently being man hunted by a gang, because then she would see that all his time in nyc meant nothing and he was still getting himself into trouble. don't gamble and then refuse to cough up, kids: even if it's petty cash that barely deserves a battering. "i'm, um, doing alright. same old same old, haha." his collar felt tight. was it hot in here or was it just him? "but do you want to go see another bit? i heard that the, uh, paintings here were...good?" this wasn't working out well. james bravely just ploughed through and tried to smirk his way to the finish. "i mean, we are both here and we both want to, uh...learn, so we could just go see that...now."
ooc;outfit *peak; urban dictionary definition: "Bad luck, gutted. When some shit goes down that is bad on your behalf, peak for you. When something bad happens to a mate , peak for them. Effectively meaning bad luck / proper gutted. English street slang."

Faye McJean | The odds of this encounter had been terribly slim (Faye would know, she could do the calculations herself). She knew she should have been feeling ecstatic at the mere probability of seeing her long lost almost love, but she wasn’t. The teenager had wasted so much time imagining a world where time was irrelevant; in that world she would have plenty of moments to tell James exactly how much she meant to him. But in all those fantasies she had forgotten just how lonely she had actually become. Camp was no longer her home filled with ones she loved. It was the opposite of the place it used to be; her loved ones having transformed into empty shells of the people they used to be through years of mental and physical strain, Faye included. The unfortunate truth was: seeing James reminded Faye of all that had changed, all she could not control.
His words didn’t catch her off guard, but she still averted her gaze from his icy blue eyes. She knew he was war from her once-home, but a part of her pretended he wasn’t. “I’m sure that’s it,” Faye replied smoothly, casting an easy smile his direction. Hoping he didn’t know - or hadn’t meant - the implication of his words, she continued to page through the booklet she had acquired. As she glanced upwards again she found his smile and forced herself to calm down; she hadn't realized she had been holding her breath.
She began relaxing her shoulders as he sputtered out a reply to her question. Faye knew that tone of voice; something was amiss, but she wasn't planning on saying anything about it. Knowing full well James didn't particularly care for learning, but not particularly caring about that fact, she nodded. "Uh, yeah, sure." The teenager stood, attempting to read the signs plastered along the stairway. "Want to go check out some mammals?" Faye asked, turning to him with a teasing smile. "The hall should be up those stairs and to the left," she stated, referencing her booklet for directions.

Spotting someone in such a busy place like this should be like finding a needle in a haystack, but James was unlucky enough to be quite distinct seeing as he was the only one with only half an arm. He didn't think that focusing on the negatives of the situation would help his case though, so he stood up just as quickly after Faye did, turning his back to where he had seen his attackers.
Despite the rush of emotions and panic going through his mind, he couldn't help himself from studying the side of Faye's face when she started peering at the signs, another reminder of the cute little things he had missed. He bit the inside of his cheek - hard - to try and stop a smile presenting itself again, but found his attempts futile when she turned to him with her own. "Cool." he murmured, stealing a quick glance over his shoulder before nodding. Mammals? "Plants are cool I guess, let's go." Without waiting for her to comply, he started towards the directions given, knowing that once he was there, there was lesser chance of him becoming roadkill. ooc;outfit real bad post u deserve better than this

Faye McJean | Little elementary school student Faye had loved museums just as much as the current Faye did; she could remember when her father gave her tickets to a new exhibit on many a Christmas morning. Everything had been so simple back then - compared to now, at least.
She observed James as he rose to stand next to her. It wasn't that he was of poor health (she wouldn't know if he was or not), but the demigod was surprised by his sudden speed. Eventually she located the correct sign, pointing up to where the halls of large stuffed animals were. Faye caught the smile on his face, her grin mirroring his own. Her heart dropped as her mind chastised her, saying "you know this isn't going to last". Ignoring her better judgement, the teenager decided that she was going to take this opportunity and run with it.
"Mammals are animals," she called jovially as she jogged to catch up to the already-moving James. Faye was soon parallel to him once more, scanning through the booklet in her hands. "The coolest room is the Rotunda, I think. Its got dinosaur skeletons and this awesome ceiling - " She glanced over at him. "Is something wrong?"
'tis chill, I was just glad to see you posted!
