a hand pushed into his back, the wresting of the large group overbearing the son of ares. he turned quickly, his wide and startled eyes searching for an escape from this claustrophobia. Finally, he found a gap between two faceless boys, pushing through and tripping before his feet. suddenly, the scene of new york around his spiraled into the living room of his apartment back in london. something was cold and solid in his hand, and he looked down to find pistol clutched beneath his cold fingers. his head slowly moved up to find ace kneeling a foot away from where he stood, his mouth begging violently yet james heard now sound. no. without having any power over his hand, the next thing james knew he was holding the nozzle of the gun against the boy's head. he pulled the trigger- jolting up in his bed, james panted violently. it took his a good minute to realize that it was just a dream, his short curls sticking with sweat to his forehead. four nights in the last week he had had the same dream now, and everytime he relived it, it was like a bullet to his own head. he couldn't handle this anymore, and he felt like he was being shut in within the room of his cabin. jumping out of bed, james pulled on a pair of shorts and a shirt before quickly leaving into the dead of night. without really realising where he was headed, james found himself climbing through the athena cabin's window, still shaking from his dream. he needed to find one of the few he actually trusted now, not even paying attention to the fact it was little over three-am. silently moving through the 'enemies' cabin, he quietly opened the door to faye's room. he caught a glace at his reflection in the mirror illuminated with the moonlight, and he stared back at the pale, sweaty, shaking ghost of himself. "crap." his whispered, before moving over and sitting on the edge of faye's bed, poking her arm softly and gently to wake her up. "faye, please." he begged, the desperation clear.

Faye McJean
Faye used to enjoy sleeping, before nightmares plagued her mind and invaded her dreams. She envied those moments, when sleeping was an enjoyable pass-time and not something to fear. A plain dream catcher was positioned over her bed frame in a naive attempt to rid herself of the reoccurring horrors. Needless to say, the dream catcher wasn't quite working yet.
Her nightmares ranged from mildly traumatic to downright terrifying. Tonight's was neither of the two, and instead - heart wrenching. Faye saw herself sitting in her living room, across from her now twelve year old brother Carter. He was mumbling to her, the words lost but his feelings clear. Anger. This boy was one of the calmest she knew, why would he be yelling? She was confused, and that only seemed to make him worse. "You never cared about me!" he screamed, throwing his copy of Hatchet over her head. The demigod shook her head in denial, but nothing came out of her mouth as she attempted to defend herself. Carter's screams filled her ears just as she was ripped from her dream.
"Carter," she muttered, rubbing her eyes to see what woke her. The image she saw confused her at first, until the person came into focus. "James," Faye restated, sitting up in her bed. Running a hand through her messy hair, she observed the slightly shaking figure in front of her. "What is it?" she asked softly, her eyes looking to meet his. The demigod's mind was buzzing from her nightmare, but she had a feeling it wasn't the time to discuss her problems. outfit

James thought that the girl was addressing him when she said 'Carter', not really thinking anything of it and allowing a shaky "yes." pass through his dry lips. It was weird how he felt about this girl, but he was certain that it was more than anything he had felt for anyone before. They hadn't established what they 'were' yet, although James didn't think that they really needed to put it into word. he really liked faye, and he knew her and how she really liked him. she was the person he went to in times like these. knowing that he had to be quiet so he didn't wake her siblings, james ran a hand through his still-sweaty hair. he didn't want to talk here, and the slightly-selfish demigod couldn't stop himself from asking "can we please go for a walk?" he didn't care that it was slightly dangerous to walk around camp at this hour, or that they would get in trouble if caught. he didn't care. he just needed to clear his mind, and if faye helped it would easier for him. feeling like she wouldn't agree to going on at this hour - because she was a good girl in comparison - he took her hand once it had left her hand, running his thumb gently over her knuckles. "please." ooc; outfit

Faye blinked, the sound of her brother's muffed yells still ringing in her ears as the room came back into focus. She could hear Livia's steady breathing in the bed across the room, and hoped that her sister was a heavier sleeper than she was. The idea of her half sister waking up to this after the event at the Mess Hall... well, the demigod didn't want to consider what would happen. She needed to repair her relationship with her sister, this was for certain, but Faye had been procrastinating on that subject for a while now. The only relationship she was stable with at the moment was her relationship with James. It was confusing, yes, but good things always are.
Straightening up in her bed, the covers twisted around her legs like coils of snakes, she listened to James' request. If it had been anyone else, she would've said no, but with his thumb rubbing over her knuckles, she couldn't think of anything else she'd rather do. "Yeah - I'll just grab a sweatshirt," Faye mumbled, breaking their physical contact to rummage through her dresser. Finding a decent pullover - her batman printed one to be specific - she tugged it over her hair and reached for a ponytail holder. After tying up her hair, she bit back a yawn that threatened to escape past her lips. Faye rubbed her grey eyes and turned to face him again, hoping she'd wake up before their walk was complete. "Lead the way," she whispered, reaching for his hand. outfit

when james left the bed, he let his hand leave hers and move up to rub his own face, trying to quickly compose himself. the dream had been anything but pleasant, and he knew for a fact that he had tried to hide this part of his recent past from this girl. he had probably heard rumors, but he hadn't spoken of it once. he just stared at the space where faye had been, waiting. he guessed he would have to talk about it now, and he almost wanted to confide in her, but it made him so angry at himself and he was scared that she would be disgusted and leave him. that was his biggest fear, because he knew how much he was disgusted in himself. he was pulled from his thoughts when he saw faye reach out her hand, letting a small and empty smile reach his lips. standing up, he took it in his own, silently choosing to lead her through her cabin, stepping over clothes and masses of scrolls. when they arrived outside, the cold air was refreshing on his warm body, and he pulled her down the steps with him. walking in some silence for a while before they were out of earshot from the cabins, he decided to speak, slowing down as they walked together. "are you ever ashamed of me?" he let out, his voice soft as he allowed himself to be genuine and sensitive for once, leaving the cocky facade behind for a moment, "like, do people ever tell you stuff about me? what do they say? honestly." he looked across at her, his blue eyes shining. ooc; outfit

Faye had learned never to question James. When he called her a nerd, she accepted it. When he decided to go out and battle zombies, she followed him. When he came back from camp after months, she was there to welcome him home. She never questioned any of it. In her opinion, James was still whole, despite his missing appendages. The demigod had absolute faith in him, and would be there for him until she couldn't be anymore. She had told herself this devotion is naive, but Faye was beginning to realize her judgement kind of sucked when it came to relationships and feelings.
Following him out, she attempted to avoid stepping on piles of scattered clothing and stacked books that crowded cabin six's slim hallways. A blueprint caught her eye, and reminded her that she hadn't completed her project on ancient structures. Her pace never slowed, though, and soon the pair was out in the open, three in the morning, air. Faye's eyes instinctively flew up to see if she could spot any constellations. Noting the archer in the sky, she pointed upwards with her free hand. "There's Orion, his arrow points East," she stated softly. The moon's light blocked any other formations from her sight, so Faye fell back into silence as she matched her footsteps with his.
When James spoke, his tone sent her back to many months previously, to when they were both recovering in the infirmary. She almost missed the implication of his words, but averted her gaze from his when she figured it out. "Oh," Faye whispered, taking a quick breath. To lie, or to be honest? She had no doubt that James could take anything she said to him, but she wasn't sure if she could handle speaking the rumors. "I'm not ashamed of you," she said swiftly, taking a quick glance at his piercing eyes. "They ah, say something about a boy named Ace." She took another breath, dropping her gaze. "They said he's dead now... because of you?" As soon as the words fell off her lips, she met his gaze again. "I - I don't believe it, of course, you're not a killer," she stammered out, trying to find reassurance in his eyes. outfit

the son of ares looked up as faye pointed out the stars, although studied her face when she spoke. he found it weird how they could be so good together - when they weren't in a life-threatening situation - yet they were complete opposites. she found interest in knowledge and people, whereas he found the same in violence and fighting. when he let himself, they could be quite similar, although james very rarely let this side of himself shown. from her first word, james knew the worst; she had heard the rumours, and this sent him in a place where he didn't know whether she had heard worse or she had not believed them. he just looked at his feet, starting to panic once more at the thought of her leaving him. he kept holding faye's hand, however, just in case this was the last chance he would get. it scared him, because she probably understood him more than anyone else ever would. but when she looked at him, his dead eyes just kept the same broken look, holding little warmth. he stopped where he was, stopping her with him and standing across from him. "faye..." he started, before frowning and finding a lump in his throat. he didn't know how to word this properly, and his body was screaming at him to stop there, but he knew he had to continue. like pulling off a plaster, he tried to make it as quick as possibly, bluntly whispering, "they're right." ooc; outfit

A soft summer breeze blew past her face, sending a shiver down her spine. She was thankful that James' hand was warm, even if he didn't notice, it kept her nerves alert and her mind awake. The night's atmosphere kept her awake as well, but for all the wrong reasons. She used to picture the moonlight as a beautiful thing, but now she expected to see an undead eye staring back at her behind every shadow. Still looking at him, her heart stopped as their walk did. Fays let out an exhale, her mind rethinking the scenario as the truth finally slipped out. There had to be some mistake.
"What?" she breathed, her grip on his hand tightening for a moment before casting her gaze down to the grass, as if an explanation would be written there. Licking her lips, she opened her mouth to speak, but nothing came out. There had to be a reason. "Was he working for Kronos?" Faye asked, hoping that that was the answer. She noticed the dead look in his eyes and exhaled, pressing her eyes shut. "He was mortal," she concluded. Gods. Releasing his hands, she clenched her fists together. This was fine, she had to kill Vinnie, this was fine. "Why?" Faye asked, opening her eyes and turning to look at him. Her voice was strained, pleading for some logical explanation. This was not fine. outfit

he saw as faye tried to make a sense of it all, and he nervously scratched the back of his head when she let go of his only hand. he knew this had been a bad idea - but the dark and pressing dreams had been eating james alive so often lately that he knew he would have to do this eventually, and now seemed like the perfect time. how could he explain it? he had no other choice, yet the more he had replayed it over and over in his mind over the last two years, he realized that maybe he could've figured something out that could've spared his life. "he was mortal." he nodded, not making eye contact with her any longer. he didn't want to see her eyes turn to disgust when they looked at him, looking at the sky. "there was a group of us in the city about two years ago. a demeter kid, his girlfriend, my ex and i. we got into an argument with this kid, ace, but it turned out that demeter knew him. they wanted a fight, and a good large group of them came onto the four of us in the middle of the street. we could take them, yeah..." he stopped for a moment, trying to control his breathing as he felt it increase, "but then ace pulled out a gun. we kicked it away from him, not wanting it to go too far, but the next thing we know...i know, he's grabbed zach around the neck and he's holding a knife to his throat." james continued to glassily stare off in the distance, but just the bright and vivid recollection of this dark time make him start to shake up again and, ashamedly for him, his eyes started to water ever so slightly. "i didn't know what to do. they were going to kill him. i picked up the gun and...and they started screaming at me. they started shouting shit at me and zach was screaming at me to just do it and then the blade went so close to his throat and...i just shot him." he looked at faye finally, studying her face in the moonlight. touching the middle left of his chest with his index finger, he told her "it hit him right there, barely touching zach. the fuzz came, and we hid in a motel. i started to breakdown and not even taylor could make me feel better..." he realized that this girl probably didn't know these people, but he was too preoccupied to stop now. "and i handed myself in after a day." ooc; outfit

Faye stared down at the grass, wishing it would give her some sort of reasoning, or something to ease the knot twisting into her stomach. She felt like acid was twisting down her throat and invading her mind, bringing back thoughts she assumed had been muted. The demigod hadn't ever regretted anything she had done in wars before. Then again, that was before the zombie apocalypse. That was before Vinnie's corpse was nearly reanimated in front of her. That was before she feared the night and the shadows it brought.
She listened as he spoke, not interrupting or moving as the story evolved. Faye grew up in Minnesota, a region too close to Canada for there to be any street fighting. The idea of fighting in camp, or around it, was normal for her. But battling it out in the eyes of normal people? Innocent people? The idea was nauseating. Maybe it was her parentage, but she avoided fights as much as possible. She avoided the outside world as much as possible, but that wasn't because of fighting. Weapons and battle plans made more sense to her than the outside world ever could.
Looking up at him as he described the last bit, she could feel herself cringing, like her skin had become uncomfortable. Swallowing as he completed the story, she bit the inside of her cheek, casting her eyes down at her flip flops, damp with the dew. So, he had saved a life by taking another. It made sense. Her eyes flicked upwards, following his index finger as it traveled to where the bullet hole would've been on his body. Faye noticed the pressure he placed on the name 'Taylor', and wished she could've wiped away the small pang of jealously she felt. Two years ago. "I would've done the same thing," Faye said firmly, her eyes traveling up to meet his. "You did the right thing." The words tasted like bile in her mouth, only because she had repeated them so many times to herself before. Vinnie's dead, but you did the right thing. You killed him, but you did the right thing. You could've saved him, but you did the right thing. outfit

the seconds in which he waited for faye to react was painful for james. he thought she was going to flip out, or push him away, or swear at him, or yell, or turn around and walk away. this was a weight that had been pressing down on him for the last two years. he was just a mortal, and james could've probably saved his life. he didn't even like zach. he had to save one, but it still made him feel disgusted at himself, and now he was waiting for faye to feel the same, because he was sure she would. so when she told him he did the right thing, he could not handle the relief he felt. the only person he had ever really cared about hadn't shunned him away. he stared at her for a moment, and he felt himself breaking for the first time since that time in the infirmary. the water that had gathered in his eyes toppled over the edge, and one started to slowly slide down his cheek. he would normally avoid crying at any cost, but it was understandable in this position he thought. with his arm, he impulsively reached forward and hugged himself tight to the girl without thinking, burying his face into the nape of her neck like a child would. "thank you." he whispered, clenching his eyes closed as he continued to lean down into the girl. "i thought you were going to leave." he admitted after a minute, pulling away slightly so he could see her face, opening his eyes once more. "i see it happening again and again all the time. seeing him go down. it's horrible." he pressed his forward against hers, looking her straight in her eyes, "i thought you were going to leave, faye, that's why i never told you." without thinking about it, and the second time he thought he had ever said it, he sighed, "i love you so much." ooc; outfit

Watching the relief flood into his eyes cleared any negativity that had passed through her brain. She doubted she could've been so understanding on the subject unless she had done worse. Vinnie's death was a favorite topic of her nightmares, and something she knew she could never forget. The demigod didn't want to forget, heck, more importantly she didn't want to lose James. He held her together, despite if he was by her side or not. Faye hadn't ever gone very far into the subject, especially not verbally, but she assumed James knew.
The sight of him tearing up, whether from grief or joy, brought water to her eyes as well, her lips forming a smile. She was about to brush the tears out of her eyes before they fell, but then she was crashed into the hug. One handed or not, he was still strong enough to temporarily knock the air out of her lungs. Faye tilted her head to the side, to make room for his, feeling a sudden dampness through her sweatshirt. She wrapped her arms around his back as he straightened up, nodding slowly. "You're welcome," she whispered.
Rubbing the tip of his right shoulder blade with one hand, she continued to smile. "I'm not going anywhere," Faye promised softly. Patiently listening as she felt a forehead against her's, she looked up, staring into a sea of ice. Some might consider his eyes starling or terrifying, but the daughter of Athena found them gorgeously intriguing. "I see things too," she breathed, her words hesitant. "My sword, it's like I can't get his blood off," Faye's words broke into a choked sob as a tear slid down her moonlit cheek. "It's not even red, it's this black awful color that - " she broke off as he sighed an 'i love you'. "I love you, too," the demigod agreed, slipping under his head to bury her face in his chest. Her grip on him tightened, and she really hoped he didn't mind, because she didn't plan on letting go anytime soon. outfit

faye seemed to be saying all the things that james needed to hear, and that made him so happy. they had both been through a lot, and james sometimes felt this overwhelming darkness flooding over him at the strangest of times. he thought that it might be a backlash of what had happened before: when the undead had taken a bite into his arm, and the venom has started to move through his veins, that he was still affected sometimes by that. he didn't ever say anything to faye about it, because they had been through too much then to go back to it; she had been through a lot with killing vinnie, before then having to cut off half of his arm herself to stop him completely turning. it was haunting, but like everything, he was just trying to get over it. he felt a pang of guilt in the bottom of his stomach at faye's promise; he had left her before, when she had needed him. they never talked about it, even liv had had a lot to say about it, but he knew that he might've done a lot of damage to this girl. thinking for a moment, he honestly told her, "neither am i. not again. not unless you need me to." it took a lot for james to make such a serious promise, but he knew that he meant it. it was his turn to listen then, and he did it perfectly, holding faye a little tighter when she spoke. again, he would have to be careful with this subject because he didn't want to hurt the girl. their relationship had started with hatred, and his jokes about her a vinnie - and his insults - still rang in his mind. that was behind him now, and he had to respect the history that had been between the two. "i know." he just murmured, trying his best to be comforting, "i know. you're so much stronger than me." tilting her head up to face his gently, james brushed his lips again hers for a second before stepping back, reaching his hand out. "come on, let's find somewhere warmer." he smiled softly, his tears having dissapeared as he started to become the usual james once more. ooc; outfit

Finally admitting her inner demons was a large step for Faye, despite her caring and compassionate nature. She didn't want to burden her horrors on anyone. Then again, she was sure no one else could handle them, except the boy standing across from her. Sure, Liv would try and listen, but the most recent battle had changed her into something that Faye didn't feel she should empathize with. People do change, James being a stunning example of such feats. Occasionally the darkest hours bring out the best in people, herself included.
She smiled into his chest as he said he wouldn't leave. She believed him, without any hint of doubt in her mind. If they could tell each other anything, one would hope they could be honest with one another. After gushing out one of her nightmares, she felt better, like a weight had been lifted off of her chest. The demigod hoped he didn't mind her talking about Vinnie, the incident had scarred her more than she was willing to admit. It was one thing to kill an enemy, but it was another to kill someone who meant so much to her. Faye bit back her 'I'm not actually that strong' comment, deciding to accept the compliment.
Tasting the saltiness of tears in their brief kiss, she smiled, knowing her tears would be dry soon. Faye was grateful to be able to see this side of James, the side that was soft and genuine. They might be broken when separated, but together they are whole. "Yeah," she agreed, brushing off any extra terms with the cuff of her sweatshirt. The teenager took his hand with a smile, glad that it was warmer than her's. outfit
