Subject: Trying to skip rocks on the ocean. (Libby) Tue Feb 04, 2014 10:30 pm
I look around the beach for a flat, smooth rock. Finding one, I throw it out at the ocean trying to make it skip. It gets taken by a wave and disappears in the surf. As if I wasn't annoyed enough. Firstly, I haven't been claimed yet. Secondly, I haven't heard from my dad in ages. And thirdly, I am terrible at skipping rocks. I push my glasses farther up the bridge of my freckled nose, then run a hand through my sandy blond hair and sigh. "Is there anything I'm good at?" I ask the wind.

Caleb was out taking a walk. He had just got done with combat practice so he was a little sweaty. Today they worked more with unarmed combat than anything else. That was good seeing how Caleb didn't have a weapon. He hadn't been in camp long, but he still recognized his siblings very easily. His jog on the sand found him standing behind his brother. Then he questioned whether or not he should be standing there. His brother started a little self condemnation pity party, and Caleb couldn't help but put in his two cents. "Well. Your mom's the goddess of wisdom. You can think on your feet, so you're probably one damn good fighter." He said smiling. He was still trying to catch his breath, but he always had time to chat with a brother.

I scramble back. "Whoa- what? What do you mean? I haven't been claimed yet. And who are you? Don't you know it's not cool to sneak up on people?" I cry, readjusting my glasses and flipping my head a bit to get the hair out of my eyes.

Caleb rolled his eyes. This was almost sad. Mom hadn't claimed him? Maybe Caleb just had a knack for these kinds of things, but there was no way he was anything but. Caleb kinda rolled his eyes and whipped the sweat from his forehead. sweating in this icy cold weather was dangerous. "Dude. First off. Man up. Seriously, just grow a pair." He said to try to stop the whining. This guy wasn't eight. He was also a man who was born to die a slow painful death. He should stop pitching hissy fits over being startled, and start assuming a combat position. "Second. There is not a chance you are anything but my brother. Take a look in a mirror. Our eyes and even cheek bones look alike." Caleb said again. The sentences were coming out smoothly now that he wasn't panting for breath. His brother, sorry, the kid had about a year and six inches on Caleb, but he was still a little bit weak. This camp would either change him for the better or beat him to a pulp.

"I know that Athena is my mother, because it's obvious, and I mean my dad, seriously, but I'm not claimed. I'm just annoyed today, and a little out of it," I state, sounding annoyed, looking for more rocks to try to skip. I didn't want to tell the guy that I am just easy to sneak up on, and I didn't want to seem like more of a baby than I already do. I sigh, "Sorry I flipped out on you, man. I'm Carter. Who are you?"

Caleb stared at Carter in disbelief. How had mom not claimed him yet? The only thing that would effectivly tip of everyone as to who Caleb's parent was happened to be the eyes, and that wasn't fool proof. This dude, with the grey eyes, long sandy hair, thin build, and glasses looked like almost every one of his sisters. Caleb would've thought brothers, but most of them had short or no hair, and tried to look as muscular and manly as possible. Intimidation was a way they chose to keep from being bullied. It worked most of the time too. Then Carter said something about being out of it. Caleb could only think of his first day in combat training. He said the same thing to the instructor.
"I'm just having a bad day." The instructor promptly gave the son of Athena a shove sending him flying in the dirt. "You can't have a bad day." The large demigod shouted. "You're new so you get some slack. But you're a demigod. Demigods can't have bad days. You have a bad day and you're dead." Caleb was trying to stand up until he received a boot in his chest. "Bam! Enemy demigod. Sword through your heart." Caleb coughed a few times and tried to stand up again. Another boot to the rib cage. It instantly was harder for him to breath but he wasn't ready to admit defeat. "Harpy. You now have claws pulling your intestines out." Caleb tried getting up using a pushup but the instructor placed his boot on Caleb's spine. Caleb fell back into the dirt. "Hell hound. That's three tons of force scattering pieces of you all over this room" He yelled again. He rolled Caleb over using the tip of his boot. He placed the heel gently on the center of the son of Athena's chest. It wasn't with pressure, just enough to show dominance. "This is what happens when you have a bad day. This was me taking it easy on you too. You no longer can have bad days. At least not if you want to live to tell the tale."
Caleb didn't totally agree with how he was taught, but he thought it was an important lesson. He wasn't going to go and break his brother's ribs though. He thought he'd let it slide unless it came up again. Carter finally introduced himself, and asked for Caleb to identify himself. "I'm Caleb. Likely your half brother." He said kind of leaning back on his heals. "Don't worry about not being claimed. You might not want to be." Caleb said raising his shirt. It exposed the scar of his mother's mark. It was very clearly burned into his skin forever. There was no way he could forget.

Carter looked at the scar curiously. "What's that? Why do you have it? Where'd you get it? If I'm claimed, will I need to get it too?" he asked quickly, his need for information growing. Carter looked his likely half-brother up and down. Caleb seemed younger than him, and obviously shorter, but since Carter didn't have much training, Caleb could probably best him in a fight. Sure, Carter had taken fencing, but that's not the same as actual fighting. In hand to hand, Caleb could still possibly win, even though Carter's dad had made him take self defence lessons when he found out Carter was being bullied at school, because Carter had only taken it for a month or so before he quit.

"It's a scar. Mom gave it to me." Caleb said. He didn't like thinking about it, but he had no choice. He though. He always would remember it. He stared off into space remembering that day.
It was close to midnight. The cabin was packing up and getting ready to sleep. Caleb walked into the bathroom to brush his teeth and hope in bed. He had fixed everything but before he actually got the brush in his mouth his shoulder felt hot. He set down the brush and splashed cold water on it. It helped for a second, and then it got worse. He had to hold on to the sink, to stand. Then even leaning on the sink didn't help. He collapsed to the floor screaming in pain. Even his shirt was beginning to burn off his skin. Then his cabin mates rushed in. A few of them ran to the Apollo cabin, and the rest helped as much as they could. The Hermes kids picked him up and rushed him to the infirmary. He was there for quite a while before they let him out.
"Let's just say it wasn't the best way to be claimed and leave it at that" He said lowering his shirt He turned around and face Carter. "So how long have you been in camp?" Caleb asked trying to keep the conversation going. He did kinda interrupt the dudes quiet time. The least he could do is keep the conversation going.

"I've been here for four months now, I guess. My dad dropped me off here and hasn't contacted me since. That's normal though, I guess, I just don't know when he'll take me back. I miss my friends, and my woods, and the Smithsonian. Have you ever been to the Smithsonian? My dad works at the American History Museum," Carter sighed. "He'd take me to work with him every day during the summer, when I wasn't exploring with my friends." Carter sighed inwardly, not wanting to really tell Caleb how homesick and isolated he was. It was unmanly. Carter, why do you have to be such a dweeb? Maybe mom hasn't claimed me yet because I'm such a loser.
