Tobias was jogging around the camp, clad in a cutoff from his old basketball team and shorts, with his running shoes. The sun was beating down heavily, even though it was fall and only around seven in the morning. He had a feeling it was going to be warm, and wanted to get his daily run in earlier than normal. Running was one of the few things the son of Hermes actually would work towards, like sports and other things. Athletics, that was his territory.
Taking the earbuds out of his ears, the demigod slowed his pace before stopping at a bench in front of the basketball courts. Tobias grinned, the reckless grin that could only belong to a son of Hermes, and he decided he might as well practice that as well. Sweat clung to his skin, making it reflect in the beams of light that peaked through the oak trees surrounding the courts, while he made his way to the half court line.
Picking up a basketball, he dribbled in between his knees, down low, up high, and shot, several times. Tobias could never be bored with this time killer, it being one of his favorite hobbies. However, after a few minutes, shooting to himself was getting old. His brown eyes scanned the area around the courts, looking for someone to join him. Spotting a guy, who looked around his age, the demigod smiled.
"Hey! You up for some one on one?" Tobias asked a little breathlessly, a grin spread over his features.

JACE HOWARDS
son of dionysus
Jace tried to sleep in this morning, but as always, his ADHD got the best of him and he got up at an hour when most of his siblings were still sleeping from the party last night. That was what you did in the Dionysus cabin: Party until you passed out. Though Jace had the good senses to fall asleep, he was still extremely tired from only 5 hours of sleep. Dawn had just broken through as the demigod sprinted out of his cabin not dressed at all for where he was headed. Most kids when working out wore a track suit or at least a ratty short sleeved shirt. But Jace was a spoiled brat and so he wore dark skinny jeans and a leather jacket over a blue shirt at accented his brown hair nicely. When it came to looks, everybody followed what Jace wore.
Normally he would have headed to the camp store or the mess hall to eat or get other things that he idled with during the day. Jace was a needy boy, and also a jerk. He wasn't afraid to admit that at least and he despised people who didn't say what they were. Like his mother, Martha. He loved her and thought very highly of her until he found out he had cheated on his father. Angrily, Jace ran down the path, burning off his anger towards his family in footsteps. Finally, he reached his destination: The basketball courts. He hoped it was empty so he could shoot hoops and scream and shout as he pleased without being disturbed, but that obviously wasn't the case.
There was already a boy there about Jace's age. Undoubtedly a basketball player because of his attire, which Jace thought was horrendous. Maybe he would make that heard over the sound of the birds chirping in the early morning sun. But it was unlikely. Jace wasn't at his most jerkiness level today, but it was pretty up there. He liked to measure out each day how mean and sarcastic he was. Yesterday was a three, and so he figured that today was a seven or eight. The boy turned to Jace after making a couple of shots. The demi-god had to admit, he was a worthy opponent to be facing. He asked Jace if he would like to play.
Jace pretended to look at a watch on his wrist that didn't exist. "Eh, yeah why not. You've got an hour and then I'm going to do important things like sleep in a hammock." Yeah, it was going to be a very jerk filled morning. Jace looked at the boy and saw his smile and he returned it, cocky and full of himself.

Tobias observed his opponent, paying attention to small details. Such as the likelihood that the demigod in front of him could be a good basketball player, which he assumed. The tone of the older guy's voice was something familiar to the son of Hermes. Cockiness, the feeling like everything and anything you do will be perfect and the best. Tobias heard that tone every time he spoke.
However his smile seemed friendly enough, mixed with pride and selfishness that the demigod found familiar. "Cool, I feel you, that's where I'm headed after this," Tobias said with a shrug. He always slept after he exercised, but it was still early enough to do something productive. Setting the ball in the crook of his elbow and leaning it against his body, the demigod grinned.
"The name's Tobias Kelly, Hermes," he introduced himself, holding out his free hand for a handshake. He may be a jerk, but he knew how to make new friends. The mornings always seemed to early for his other friends, who preferred to sleep in late and not go running with him. A part of Tobias didn't care, knowing that he couldn't care. As a public figure of cockiness, he couldn't care. The other part enjoyed listening to music pounding through his ear drums, letting the nature soak him in.

JACE HOWARDS
son of dionysus
"I'm Jace. Dionysus's kid." Jace introduced himself, taking up the offer for a handshake. He didn't use his last name much anymore, it didn't matter here. Back in California, everyone knew who he was and it was necessary to give his full name. It came as a shock for most people when they found out they were right smack dab in the presence of the famous Jace Howards, known for his outrageous parties. Here at Camp Half Blood, however, if you didn't go on some high and mighty quest, you were a nobody.
It didn't matter if you were the prettiest, or the smartest, or the bravest. You were a demigod. Those those things didn't matter. They mattered to Jace though. Well, not the bravery part. He wasn't much for standing up against 10 armies of hellhounds, armed with only his sword and the standard armor and shield that they all got. Fighting was one thing Jace never could get the hang of, though he loved to sword play and throw daggers at dummies. He was good at racing cars. Life was meant to be fast, not slow, and Jace lived his days to the fullest because he never knew when it might be his last hour to play a game of basketball, or fly down an abandoned street at 110 MPH.
Jace looked at Tobias and thought if he wanted to associate with the Hermes boy or not. He seemed like a jerk, but had that sliver of niceness that they all had, but somebody had to bring it out. Jace was not going to be that person. He wasn't going to change for anybody, so why make somebody change for him? Besides, Tobias seemed pretty cool. Jace decided to befriend him.
After letting go of Tobias's hand, Jace raised one eyebrow and smiled. "You my friend, are about to get crushed."
