| Astoria got to the beach early, not wanting to miss her co-guard coming. She'd been assigned the job of lookout, and lookouts came in twos, so one could fight while the other would run off the warm the camp. As long as she could remember, she'd been placed with demigods from stronger cabins, like Ares and Athena, and they all figured that a puny child of Demeter could never be a formidable fighter. She might have been tall, but she hadn't built up bulk like others had.
Astoria sat in the sand, and plucked an apple from a branch that seemed to come from nowhere. Apples were her favourite, and it helped when buddying up to the pegasi too. Finally, she saw someone coming in the distance, hair blowing wildly in the wind. She stood up to meet her.

Natalie gave a sigh as she neared the beach and saw the lookout post with a small figure, dark against the sunset. It was her duty evening, and she was not looking forward to it. Hours of boredom till the next shift took over. Joy. Cali sure has a sense of humour, Natalie thought dryly as she got a closer look at her co-guard - especially what the girl was doing. Then the conversation with her cabin leader earlier drifted back to her mind. Please don't ditch duty again, Natalie. If someone complains to Mr. D, you could get into trouble. Anyway, I'm sure you'll find today's pairing interesting. Natalie didn't like being told what to do, and most people wouldn't force her to - due to obvious reasons, which led her to ignore most commands from people she didn't respect. Still, she did respect her cabin leader and decided it was probably a better thing to go. Not because she thought anyone would dare to tell, but Cali's last statement had got her curious. And now as Natalie mused about it, stopping a few metres from her partner, it did seem ironic that she was being put with a child of Demeter, given her particular abilities. She blinked at the girl, her face showing none of her emotions inside. She knew that the girl would most probably dub her as insignificant. Whatever, Natalie thought, dismissing that conclusion, she'd know soon enough anyway. OOC: Oh by the way, Dar, they haven't met yet.

| Astoria smiled brightly, closing the gap between the two girls. She offered a hand to shake. "Astoria Maverick. Nice to meet you," she said. Friendliness was Astoria's main charm. It worked on most people.
Astoria'd heard that the girl didn't show up for duty often. She wondered why they girl had come now, but company was company and Astoria didn't look a gift horse in the mouth. She was pretty, with curly brown hair, and piercing grey/ blue eyes. She was petite, and seemed like a sweet, harmless girl. Her posture said something else. She looked like she didn't really care, like she was so over the whole thing. Her mouth was turned in a scowl, as if she'd decided that she didn't like Astoria much.
She sighed inwardly, grin never wavering. The girl seemed difficult, but harder nuts have been cracked.

Natalie tilted her head at the camper's words, before replying in kind. "Natalie Hunter. Interesting to meet you." Her voice was soft with a tinge of a French accent, yet was lined with something else, something intense, as if every word spoken had a hidden meaning to it. She then looked down at the hand offered, contemplating something, before saying mildly with an innocent smile, "But I don't think that's a good idea."She strolled towards the edge of the forest that separated it from the beach, staring into the dark abyss. Then she turned and watched Astoria, a slight playful smile on her lips. Anyone who knew Natalie well would know that it wasn't exactly a good thing to be on the receiving end of one of those smiles. She probably looked like some china doll, maybe even an airhead who thought of only clothes, but Natalie certainly was nothing like those. "So, how long have you been here?" OOC: Dar, xD Nat's face shows nothing. Its like uh, curious and expressionless. She doesn't look like how she looks in the picture xD Its just a reference. (: Nat's basically a brat though, but a cunning one at that.

| "It's been four years," Astoria replied. "I can't leave now. Camp is home too."
A peculiar smile played on Natalie's lips. Astoria's own was becoming more forced by the second, a polite smile, as cookie cutter as she was. Natalie appeared as though she had something up her sleeve. Natalie was playing her. Despite her perfect looks and innocent act, only an idiot wouldn't be able to tell that Natalie was a bad enemy. She'd planned something, and Astoria didn't like that. She felt like prey.
Astoria fingered with the clay beads that were strung on her leather necklace. She'd seen only one on Natalie's cord. One year of being a camper. Yet she wasn't like the others at Camp Half-Blood. She fought mind games, something only Athena's children did. But they didn't do it like Natalie did. Because Natalie was far more unfeeling.
"Apple?" she offered hastily. That was her defence mechanism. She gave out apples. Unfortunately, it wasn't a very good shield, not against Natalie.

Natalie stared at the apple curiously for a few moments, then decided, "Nah, I'll pass." Being brought up in a rich family, she was appalled at the stuff American people did, especially American kids in a a relatively unsupervised camp - not that the daughter of Hecate would want any more supervision than the normal teen. But Astoria probably didn't even wash that thing.
She turned her attention away from the girl and towards the ocean. Then without warning, she plopped down onto the sandy beach. "Ugh, what a mundane job," she groaned. Natalie poked the sand, watching the grains slide into the hole. "Hey, how do you even cope with this duty?" she asked Astoria.

| Astoria shuffled behind Natalie after her apple was rejected. People didn't just turn don't Demeter's children's fruits. Few could resist them- after all, their mother was the goddess of agriculture. And here Natalie was, refusing an apple. A small gesture, but it had too many strings attached. Her co-guard asked how she coped with duty, having seated herself in the sand.
Astoria shrugged. "I guess that I did it at first because I had to. I do it now because this is home."
Whatever happened, Astoria wouldn't let Camp Half-Blood be hurt. When you spend four long years in a place, and you build a life there, it's hard to leave, and it's hard to imagine it destroy. Being on duty would prevent that.
"Wouldn't you protect camp too?"

Natalie considered the question seriously. "Hmm.. I suppose so," she said flippantly, shrugging. Then she paused, glancing towards the daughter of Demeter. "Have you ever wondered why we support the gods?" It was a simple statement, yet it implied so much more. What exactly did she mean?

| She stared at Natalie. That was the toughest question for a demigod. Why the gods?
"I could never hate them enough, you know? Sometimes, I lay awake in my bed, wondering why I couldn't just have a normal mom, a normal life. Like, why did Demeter have to let me be born, knowing that I'd be in constant danger? And the fact I have so many siblings, that seems to cheapen whatever she did have with my dad. I loathe her for not being here," Astoria rambled on, completely sharing herself to this virtual stranger.
She paused. She was so sure that just about every demigod felt this way. "Yet, I don't hate her enough to want the gods to fall. And whatever it is, she's still my mother. So I'm always going to support the gods, no matter what."
She took a bite of her apple, which had almost been forgotten. She felt terrible. Astoria knew she shouldn't feel the way she did, because there was still camp, right? It wasn't as if the gods had left to fend for themselves completely.
"How do you feel?" she asked, an uneasy glance etched in her features.
