Amber took his point into consideration, surveying their surroundings. It would be pretty obvious, she thought.

"Perhaps you could choose something that wouldn't look too out of the ordinary if I worked my magic on it?" She suggested, looking back at Blake.

Blake looked around, trying to find something that Amber could work her magic on. Biting his lip, he paid close attention to where the polar bears stayed.

"Umm . . ." he started, thinking of what she could do. "I don't know. Uhh . . . make a fish jump out of the water? Break a part of the ice, maybe?"

He almost face palmed himself. That's really amazing, Blake. Real smooth.

Amber raised an eyebrow. Fish?

"I would, but can't. Seeing that there are none. At least, I can't sense any. The keepers must have fed them directly. I'll try the ice part." She said, lips lifting into an amused smile.

She fixed her eyes on the ice beneath a sleeping polar bear's paw, imagining it thinning layer by layer from the bottom up, into water. Amber then raised her hand, reached for her magic and snapped her fingers, releasing it.

The ice seemed to melt downwards and disappear entirely into a neat rounded-edged hexagon hole. The polar bear's paw dropped into the freezing cold water unexpectedly. It awoke abruptly, growling in distaste and lifting its soaking wet paw out of the water.

She smiled in satisfaction. Suddenly, a grey object fell into the hole with a Splash!

Then Amber widened her eyes, for that was the exact bear Cinder was lying on.

Oops.

Blake clapped his hands, grinning widely at Amber. "Fantastique! That was so, err, how do you Americans say it?" he paused, tapping his chin. "Wicked?" he tried, although it came out sounding confused.

But something caught his eye. A small, grey thing fell into the freezing water. Was that a cat? He turned to Amber, motioning to the water. "Did you see that? It looked like a Korat cat fell into the water."

If it had been there all this time, he had to learn how to be more observant. Being unobservant was a bad thing, especially being a demigod. Who knows? A monster could be in the room right now. The thought made Blake stop what he was doing and looked around. He sighed in relief when the nothing seemed unusual about the surroundings.

"Thanks! Your accent is so cute by the way." Amber replied, forgetting Cinder for a moment.

Then his comment made her look back at the water.

Dang it. I'll get so nagged by that cat.

"Yeah, something like that. Don't worry about it." Then another thought occurred to her. "Say, how much do you feel like meeting a mythical creature?" she asked, shooting him a mischievous smile.

Blake felt heat rising to his cheeks, tingling them a light red. He never got compliments back in France. He was the subject of all the teases with a nickname like his. America was like a clean slate for him. He decided he wouldn't be the same guy he was back in Europe.

Feeling a little daring, he winked. "Tu es mignon." You're cute. A small part of him hoped that she didn't understand this so he wouldn't make a fool out of himself.

"I won't get eaten or anything, right? I'd hate to be this creature's loaf of bread." Blake looked at Amber like he was unsure about meeting this creature.

She winced. Where are you?

Don't worry, I'll find you soon enough, Cinder replied grumpily, thoroughly annoyed.

"She won't eat you, that's for sure. But whether you'll be turned into bread or not, that would depend on what you do, wouldn't it?" she winked at him in a just-kidding manner.

"By the way, is there a place here where we can go about without almost every tourists' eye on us? "

Blake nodded. "There's a place where they hold birthday parties not far from here. I'm pretty sure it's vacant at this time. Come on"

He didn't know what to expect about what Amber was about to show him. Blake felt the color drain from his face. Holy Zeus. What if she was an evil demigod plotting against the campers
and decided to kill him next?

He walked towards the room, checking if Amber was behind him. You're being stupid, Toast. She just told you that she was from Camp Half-Blood. There's nothing to worry about, right? Besides, he had his retractable sword in his pocket. Nothing to worry about.

When he reached the door, he twisted the doorknob. "It's locked. Do you think you can use your powers to unlock it?"

She followed him nodded in answer to his question. Amber reached into her flow of magic, then changed her mind, and instead, reached her mind out and touched the doorknob mentally. She felt for the keyhole, then delved deeper into the structure of the lock. Finding the link, she pushed the lock into the 'unlock' position.

It swung open with a 'click'.

"Merci," Blake said, smiling at her. He stepped into the vast room. The room was jungle-themed, the walls being decorated with drawings of different animals. He stopped walking in the middle of the room and turned to face Amber.

"Okay. What is it that you want to show me?"He was curious. Would this creature kill him or not?

"Just leave the door half-open." Amber requested, then leaned against the wall and waited for a minute or so. Finally, a grey kitten stalked in, fur fluffed out, as if it had never touched water in its life.

It glared at Amber.

I'm sorry, she apologised. Entirely an accident.

The cat flicked its silvery tail dismissively. And who's this?

Uh, Blake. He's a demigod too, Amber replied hurriedly, eager to change the topic.

That I can see, Cinder replied grumpily, fixing topaz unblinking eyes on Blake.

"Say hi, but be polite. She's older than you." Amber suggested.

Blake gave Amber a look, as if saying "Are you kidding me?". This cat was the mythical creature she was talking about? The one that fell into the water? He was expecting a pegasus or something.

"Umm, bonjour," he greeted the cat, shifting awkwardly. Okaaaaay. This is completely normal.

"I'd be careful if I were you. You don't meet many creatures of magic around. And when you do, you wouldn't want to upset them - no knowing what they might turn you into." She caught his look and warned him, "Though rather reliable to watch your back in battles. Cinder is one of the um... nicer ones. "

She cut herself off before she could say 'tamer'. Were-cats can be very temperamental, they don't like to be contained, she thought privately, keeping that mental note in mind.

Enchanté,Cinder replied rather drily to Blake mentally so that both could hear her inside their heads.

That surprised Amber. Wow, I didn't know you could speak french.

Not only French. But I'd rather not tell you or you'll be insisting that I translate everything to and fro.

I most certainly would.

Cinder sniffed disdainfully.

Blake was taken aback. The cat just spoke to him through his thoughts and in French. "Parlez-vouz Français? Je suis vivement impuressioné." It was true; he was impressed. This cat could speak French? Awesome!

"What kind of mythical creature is Cinder?" he questioned Amber. Blake has never encountered mythical creatures, aside from the ones at camp. Cinder intrigued him. He was so excited to be actually acquainted with one.

That was true. Cinder was a companion and friend to Amber, but she most certainly was not a dumb animal, nor was she exactly Amber's pet.

Wanting to avoid another cutting retort from Cinder, Amber cut in, "She's a were-cat."

"I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a were-cat. A werewolf, oui. But what exactly is a were-cat?" Blake frowned, shoving his hands into his jean’s pockets before adding for Cinder’s sake, “No offense.”

Cinder informed him that she was smarter compared to other animals. He wasn’t sure whether or not she was telling the truth or just bragging. Blake bit his lip, looking down at his sneakers. Cinder was kinda scary and intimidating.

Cinder smiled, baring her teeth. We are a special race of cats. Intelligent enough to turn you into stone or stop the beating of your weak hearts. You mortals have such short lives, not enough to do anything.

"Um, yeah. That pretty much summarizes it. She did collapse an entire tree on a hellhound before." Amber added, wincing at Cinder's harshness. She hoped that she wouldn't lose her new friend. Perhaps letting Cinder meet him was a mistake.

But she would them later, if I hadn't come to wait for her. And she might have a worse temper by then.

“Uhh, that’s awesome.”

Blake’s gaze shifted from Amber to Cinder. He wished he had a pet or a companion. It seemed cool to have one, aside from other campers as friends.

“So, if you’re ready to leave, Amber . . .” his voice trailed off. “I’ll give you two some, uhh, privacy.”

He turned around and surveyed the walls. America was so odd.

Cinder then padded over under a chair and lay down, closing her eyes.

"Oh... Sorry. I guess you're bored of this.. " Amber trailed off uncertainly, unsure if Blake was offended by Cinder. "Maybe we should get going before a security guard comes over and finds us here?" She suggested, hoping that he wasn't too affected. By whatever it was.

Blake raised his hands up in a defensive way. “No, I’m not bored! No worries! I find it really cool that you have Cinder as your, err, companion.”

“Alright. Where do you want to go next? The sun’s setting soon. Why don’t we go to one last tourist spot before our day ends, ey?” he asked.

He planned for them to go to Rockefeller Center. He heard stories about it being absolutely beautiful when the sun was setting. You’d see the different buildings of New York light up as the sun went down. If France had the Eiffel Tower, America had the Rockefeller.

Amber brightened a little, glad he wasn't tired of her. She liked him as her friend, he seemed so interesting somehow.

“You’ll see,” Blake said, a twinkle in his eyes. He opened the door out for Amber and led her back to the streets of New York and into the subway.

Once at their stop, he grabbed Amber’s hand and walked over to the Rockefeller Center. The tall building stood before them and Blake couldn’t help but stare in awe. It was so tall!

Inside, he bought them tickets for the Top of the Rock observation deck and together, they went up to the 102nd floor.

“Wow,” Blake gasped. “The view’s amazing.”

The sun was setting in New York City, leaving the sky with beautiful streaks of pink and orange. Buildings were lighting up and the commotion was barely audible from the streets below. It was a different kind of beauty. Definitely not the historical beauty France had.

Amber followed him up the building and was taken aback at the view. Wow was an understatement.

It was simply magnificent.

You could see almost everything from up here. She had never been so up high before. She admired the scenery, before realising the sun was already setting. I've spent too much time outside, my siblings would have noticed me missing. I have to get back to camp ASAP. With a bit of luck she could most likely get back in unseen and make up a story about being in the other side of Campus.

"Do you have to go back to camp?" Amber asked him.
