The Branch
There was no way this could be happening! My life was out of control, I was on the verge of death with my two best friends and there was one way out. The problem: Only two people could use it. Let me back this up a few hours. My name is Cody Marshall. I'm a fit 16 year-old. My two friends, Anna, 15, and Seth who is 18 (they were brother and sister), were out jogging with me when we happened upon a strange glowing object that, at first glance looked like a meteor. It was glowing, but something odd was happening. It made me want to sing! I shot a curious glance at my friends who both had far off looks in their eyes like they were in another place.
“Err guys?” I said snapping my fingers. That's when I got worried the meteor had just done the strangest thing in the world. It had started playing show tunes. The music was so entrancing I wanted to reach out and touch it, but something was holding me back. My concentration broke and I grabbed my two friends who were also reaching to poke the strange rock. The second I made contact with them they returned to normal.
“What's that music?” Anna asked drifting back towards the stone, then suddenly remembered it's power while back.
“I don't know but it's creepy,” I said “We should go tell someone..”
“I agree. Let's get going!” Seth responded. We all tried to step but we weren't able. I looked down and saw a horrifying site, the ground was literally swallowing my feet. It was happening so slowly that none of us had noticed it.
“Ditch the shoes?” We all said in Unison
“Yep!” I said and quickly tugged my feet out of the shoes. My friends did the same and we took off running back towards town. “Uh, Guys? Is it just me or is the ground still trying to eat us?” I said, noticing my feet seemed to be sticking slightly.
“Yea I noticed it too” said Anna a nervous tone in her voice.
“I think it's getting worse” said Seth “I think we're sinking faster”
“The tree's are safe. Look!” I said. We had just cleared the forest and reached one branch tree, It was the only tree for miles around. The ground directly under it had not been disturbed at all. “Quick let's climb up.” I said, hoisting myself up the branch with my friends close on my tail. Once we were all on the tree branch we got a good look at our surroundings. The ground all over the field was bubbling like it was a boiling pot of water. Things were disappearing into the earth all around us. The meteor was still in it's place a few hundred yards away unmoving. Then the greatest sound I'd ever heard started approaching. It was the deep thrum of helicopter blades. It was a rescue chopper, and relief swept through my body. But it was short-lived. Instantly, a feeling of dread swept over us as our tree branch started cracking. “No.. No NO” I stammered.
“Oh God we're too heavy...” Anna said trailing off.
“I'm getting off.” Seth said stony faced.
“NO.” I told him firmly you take care of your sister “I'll be alright. Get the chopper down here as fast as you can but we are not all going down.” I said beginning to jump.
“Cody we'll get you back” Anna said starting to cry. That's when I jumped.
