Amara was on her way to the camp store, partly because she had nothing else to do. It was pouring outside, and there was the occasional thunder and lightning. No one was outside. If you just arrived, camp would look deserted.

Amara kept her head down low as the rain bounced off her leather jacket. She didn't have a hat or umbrella, but she didn't particularly care if her hair got wet. It wasn't like she would she anyone else at the camp store. She could barely remember the last time she went there. The only thing stopping her from going to an actual store or mall was that she didn't feel like driving there. The camp store was convenient, and she wasn't searching for anything in particular. When she arrived, the only other person she saw was the cashier who was about to doze off.

Amara went to the food aisle to grab a few snacks as she planned for a movie day with some of her half-siblings. She was tempted to just steal the snacks, but something was holding her back. She turned around to grab something else when she bumped into someone. The food in her hands dropped to the ground. She instantly went to her knees to pick it up as she apologized, "Sorry for bumping into you."

When Carter realized he'd bumped into a girl, he quickly bent down and started helping her pick them up. "The fault is all mine. I backed up without looking where I was going," he replied as he handed them back to her.

Upon inspection you would see his orange camp shirt, wrinkled like he didn't care, clashing terribly with his blue vest, but again, he didn't much care. He smiled warmly as he stood back up and held out a hand to help her back up."It happens a lot. I always forget to look behind me."

Amara smiled at the boy. She wouldn't ruin her one chance at making a friend. "It's fine, nothing to worry about." She responded, shrugging it off. She took her things from him while still smiling. She took a step back to take the boy in. He looked around the same age as her, but she couldn't guess his god parent. It definitely wasn't Ares because they were too arrogant for their own good, and it wasn't Hades or she would've seen him around the cabin. "I'm Amara, daughter of Hades." She said, introducing herself. She would've shaken his hand, but both of them were full of items.

Amara couldn't help but think, Why is he here? Last time she checked, campers barely came here. No one else was there except for the two of them and the cashier who was already fast asleep. "What are you getting?" She inquired. Amara didn't see the harm in asking, if he didn't want to tell her he didn't have to.

He just smiled and waved his new notebook."Notebooks and pens! The notebooks here are really thin so they don't last very long. I'm Carter, son of Athena. It's nice to meet you," he replied warmly as he put his hands back down. To be fair, he practically used one a day, filling them up with information about the camp and the woods and anything he came across, just because he liked to categorize and study everything.

It was a habit he'd taken from his father who worked for the Smithsonian network and would take Carter to work with him, and planted the seed of his love of studying. Now, he wrote down everything. He knew no one would read it, nor could he let his notes fall into the wrong hands, but, if his chances of growing old enough to become a historian were as small as he'd heard, he would do his best while he was around.

It was refreshing to Amara to finally see someone smiling. It instantly uplifted her mood. Everyone here looked like they weren't happy. Amara learned one thing when she was younger: if you're alive, be happy and enjoy it because you don't know how much longer you have. Because of her background, she was taught to enjoy every small moment of every day. She tried to as best as she could; it was definitely hard to when the threat of monsters was always looming over her head. She didn't need to take any chances, she still needed to take care of Adriano. He was her brother, she'd risk her life for him no matter what.

It was typical for an Athena child to be buying notebooks. Amara didn't understand why though, what was so interesting to be taking notes on? "What do you need them for?" She asked as an attempt to carry on the conversation. She was determined to make a new friend out of this no matter what happened. Besides, he seemed nice. It was rare to find a rude and arrogant child of Athena. She wouldn't let this opportunity slip away.

Carter's eyes lit up when she seemed curious about his notes. He excitedly pulled out some of the notebooks from the breast pocket of his vest and flipped through them quickly,  showing her how much he'd written. "I write notes on everything! I explore the woods a lot and write about what I see. I write about camp too, but I know how those could fall into the wrong hands so I hide those as well as I can. These ones are maps, monster things, a few things about camp. I'm getting new ones so I can go out exploring again," he said, showing her certain pages as he explained.

He hoped his notes would be noticed and found useful some time, so he tried his best to be as detailed as possible. The thought that his work could be helpful excited him to no end, even though it was highly unlikely to ever happen. Carter was a hopeful kind of guy. He tried to be cheerful and inspiring, feeling that positivity was the best way to help tense situations like they were in. It was a difficult place to live in right now, but you can't dwell on the negativity, could you?

Amara couldn't help but smile as Carter talked about what he took notes on. The way his eyes lit up when he started talking about it made her suddenly happy. She was never that engrossed in something to love talking about it. She didn't like what she was usually doing for her father and brother: selling drugs, stealing, shooting people. Not something she was proud of. However, she'd rather do it than her brother. She wouldn't know what to do if her twin got hurt doing something like that. She'd blame herself, but she knew she could only protect him so much. She had to stay at camp, he could be doing something bad right now, and she wouldn't be able to do anything about it. That thought made her feel... useless. Her mother tried to protect Amara, but it was too late. She already knew too much, but she might be able to shelter Adriano from some things. Se tied her best to make him go to high school, but he didn't appreciate it the opportunity to become better.

"That's really cool." She said, and she meant it. "I've never seen anyone do this before." She added. Amara looked at the pages and tried to read some of what he wrote. It was pretty interesting and very detailed, more than she could've written about the woods at least. "How often do you go out exploring?" She asked curiously. The only question that stuck in her mind that she wasn't going to ask was, What are you going to do when there's no more woods to explore?

"Oh, whatever days my schedule permits me to! Camp stuff is more important than my hobbies so I do what I have to do, and go out when I have time, so about... well I try to go every day but usually every other day, or every three days," Carter explained, resting a hand on the back of his head above the neck, trying to resist the temptation of going deep into thought at the moment because when most of your brain processes are focused on thinking about something, it was very hard to hold a conversation.

Currently, his brain was trying to get him to go deep into thought about the girl he was talking to. She didn't seem like an average Hades kid, and it stirred his curiosity. He didn't know much about the kids in that cabin, rarely going and asking them things, but he had a lot of questions about them. Carter doubted they were all dark and gloomy like people said, Amara certainly wasn't!

Amara continued to listen as he talked about how often he went exploring. He seemed to enjoy it a lot. When he talked about camp stuff, she couldn't help but laugh. She didn't do half of the stuff she was supposed to, partly because she didn't care. Training was boring, and she knew how to fight. She'd been in fist fights, knife fights, you name it and she's probably been the cause of that fight. She wasn't dead so that proved her point even more, she knew what she was doing. "Camp stuff? What camp stuff are you talking about?" She inquired with another laugh. Amara nodded her head along as he kept talking, to let him know she was still listening."How long have you been doing this for?" She asked with an encouraging smile.

Carter thought about it. "Well... you know... archery, crafts, the climbing wall, stuff like that," he replied, sounding slightly confused. He wasn't sure how she could not know what he meant, though he knew he had a habit of using his own slang for things because he spent so much time in his own head. Carter brushed off the thought and smiled brightly.

"Oh! I've been doing it since a wewk or two after I got to camp... so I'm not sure. I'm bad with time," he laughed and scratched his head. "A few months? A year? I can't remember!" Carter smiled brightly at his new friend. She seemed like such a nice person. He was very excited to keep new people in general, especially nice people.
