it had been a long time since the ares boy had been within the perimeter of camp, and he did feel a pang in his stomach as he passed over the border of his home. everything looked so peaceful and calm: the meadows were long and vibrant with summer colour, and flowers nestled into the earth. the evening sun rippled over the lake in the distance, and shone behind the family cabins that belonged to him and his peers. but james quickly reminded himself that this wasn't the place that he once knew: he was as unsafe here as he was in the real world, and this thought had caused him to hastily escape after hearing the news of the death of a daughter of zeus. he had tried his best to stay and protect those he loved, but he wasn't emotionally strong enough to sustain all the strain and fear and stress. so he ran. he ran again and left behind those whom had needed him.

he didn't really understand why he was back; there always seemed to be a force that made him return to camp even after running and hiding, yet every time he came back he realized that he was still not ready to be the person that he had been before. he was too broken: damaged goods. no one could see this, of course - except for maybe her - but he truly had convinced himself this time that he was ready to try it all over again.

(little did he know that he was more broken than ever)

he had gotten within three meters of the entrance to camp before an arrow torn past his thigh, threatening to tear a hole in his denim jeans. he quickly jumped to the side, throwing his hand (and his left forearm) up in a surrender motion, flailing wildly and shouting to his attacker behind him, "don't shoot, jackass, i'm a camper!"

Daughter of Khione

Sentry duty was a lame occupation of the camp. It was important, yes, but Belle never understood why the duty had to fall upon her of all people. She had a list of other things she could devote her time to. The job could be performed by any foot-soldier in the entire camp, and yet she was chosen. Belle stood watch at a tree nearby Thalia's, a neighboring pine that cast enough shade for her to go a few paces without becoming victim to the sun's rays. Being a daughter of Khione, this was important for she hated the heat. It was a foul beast that desired little more than to burn the skin. With the sun and the job of standing watch for something that would likely never come, Belle was quickly losing patience. Therefore, at the first sight of intruding life, she was ready.

Bow in hand, she notched one of her infinitely-frozen arrows onto the string. Her legs moved into a stand that made her strong, one foot back and one forward, her bow arm hefted the bow up quickly to shooting position, and the string drew back to her jaw. And then, she waited. Her icy blue eyes analyzed the scenery for another glimpse at who was approaching. Their form was obscured by the pine trees, a shadow weaving between the trunks. When just enough of the shadow was visible for a long enough period of time, Belle recognized a humanoid figure and shot her arrow. The arrow zipped towards the figure's leg, but it jumped aside and the arrow embedded itself in the ground. Belle was already reaching for another when the figure ran into her line of view and yelled to her. It was a boy, young-ish, brown hair, striking features. Belle let the arrow slide back into her quiver.

"Mes excuses," Belle called, straightening up her form to stand tall, looking not embarrassed for having shot at him but rather collected and purposeful. "I was not aware who you were."

james did not like to deal with people, and had not had to deal with many for a long while, sticking with the few friends and acquaintances within miami and new york for the last few months; so it's not surprise that he found his fist curled at being shot at by a stranger. her jaw and muscles quickly slacked once more as he turned, not being able to find the anger that was so familiar to him anymore. his body and mind were too tired to feel angry, and he felt like he didn't have the will to fight anything anymore.

his soon encountered a familiar-looking blonde girl holding the bow high, almost looking proud that she had nearly caused serious damage to his leg. His cold blue eyes analysed her as he straightened once more, a automatic reaction to assess all of her weak spots if he needed to take her down. seeing as he was a son of ares, this was built into him, and his years of fighting had only made the reaction quicker.

"well who else is going to be walking around here at this time." he snorted sarcastically, cracking his knuckles as he stared out once more upon camp. he was almost scared to talk even closer, scared of who or what he was going to face upon his arrival: talking to his attacker seemed like a good way to put off going down, "is this how paranoid camp has gotten now? Jesus. do you go shooting innocent people all the time, blondie?"

Daughter of Khione

Belle watched the boy approach skeptically. Trust didn't come easily to her, and it probably didn't help that she was doing a job that required objective judgement. Immediately, she began to examine everything and anything about him. How he walked, how he carried himself, his facial expression, even his feet. She noticed that his hands, or hand, was bunched up into a fist suggesting hostility. Therefore, her grip on her bow didn't loosen, and her crystal eyes did not wander from him. His missing arm was probably the most striking thing about him, and she noted that a physical struggle could probably be easily avoided, or at least kept short. He seemed not to be carrying any weapons. Altogether, he didn't look threatening. And yet, he had the audacity to taunt Belle Neige with names and an attitude.

"I'm sorry, how silly I must be. I forgot that someone attempting to invade a summer camp would likely give you a nice and neat time and date of invasion, just for our convenience." Belle didn't like his attitude, so she matched it, easily. Typically, she would treat a stranger with a certain amount of respectful distance. She omitted the 'respectful' part of that equation until he earned it back. For now, she wasn't impressed with him nor pleased. Her apologies for attempting to shoot him we inching their way towards apologies for missing.

"Innocent people aren't usually entering the camp, they are already inside. Might want to explain where you've been to someone important. Preferably not me," she added, not interested at all in his story or excuses. Rather than questioning where he'd been, she decided it best to just let him deal with it himself. If he was responsible enough, she didn't know, but she made a mental note to ask Chiron later if he'd met with a camper fitting James's description. "If you want to eat, you should hurry. They are closing the Mess hall in about ten minutes."
