WE CAN SWIM IN SILENCE, YOU CAN PULL ME UNDER
i will drown until you care

Sunday, 2:01pm, and Robin stared at the two-meter stick in her hands as though it had come from Mars. She tried moving it but damn, the stick must have been infused with iron because her arms turned into lead the first ten seconds she paddled. Without her help, the canoe moved in slow circles around the water. One minute into the race and they already fell behind. Robin gulped and tried once more, putting all her strength into forcing the water back. It didn't make much of a difference. Though she could have sworn that the canoe turned a few degrees towards the right way before it went back to a circle.

Robin bit her lip and looked at her partner's back for guidance. It was only the two of them cramped together in the canoe, with her in the back. The best part of the whole thing was that Robin had let her partner sit in front. That way they still moved, albeit in circles.

Laughter filled the air, buzzing in her ears. Ignoring the sniggering audience, she took a deep breath and dared ask, "Um. Do I paddle in the left side or the right?"

Her partner probably thought her to be an idiot by now. Maybe even wondering why and how they got stuck with her out of all the campers joining the race.

Unwittingly, she glanced at her watch. 2:02pm. The rest of the canoes were already starting to disappear into the distance. Oh no.

crystal frost
the cold burns brighter than you'll ever smolder.
The first few seconds of the race started off fine, but when the canoe began spinning, Crystal knew something definitely wasn't right. They had agreed to paddle at opposite sides, obviously, otherwise the canoe would not move. But now the camper behind her was either not paddling or paddling on the wrong side.

Crystal disregarded the former option almost immediately. Who on earth would participate in a canoe race and then refuse to paddle? Was her partner... toying with her? A flicker of confusion swept across her face. Perhaps it was a just simple misunderstanding. Undeterred and choosing the most efficient course of action, the daughter of Khione quickly stopped paddling and switched her paddle to the other side.

They managed to move about three inches before the canoe resolutely started turning again.

Crystal paused in surprise, her paddle skimming the waters' surface. Didn't the girl, Robin, suggest that she sit in front presumably so she could steer at the back? And she had said it with so much confidence too. So why wasn't she steering? Or actually paddling for that matter. They were far behind the other campers now; Crystal could see bright flashes as the dozens of paddles brought up a sparkling spray in the distance. Their only companions now were campers who had a wrong start or had overturned, and even they were getting on better than the forlornly rotating duo.

Then the question made her freeze. Starting to get annoyed, Crystal looked back to give the mass of orange hair a piercing stare. "What do you mean?"

Crystal's voice was sharp enough to cut steel. Her eyes weren't a pleasant sight either. Robin quailed under the glare, shoulders hunched. "Um, I was just... wondering..."

The hostility robbed her of words - quite an achievement, come to think of it - and her heart hammered hard and fast, making it hard to breathe. The pressure threatened to squash her flat, because this was her first time in a canoe dammit and she expected paddles to be, you know, lighter. But the intensity of the blonde's gaze quenched the complaints that would have slipped out. Just the sheer weight of her stare dragged Robin down to the pits of please-I-want-to-be-anywhere-but-here.

It could be worse, right? Well, at least I'm not the one in front, leading...

Robin gulped and gripped her paddle tight enough that her knuckles shone white. It was resting on the edge of the canoe, hardly touching the water, mostly because she was still unsure how to do the alternate-paddling thing. What if she accidentally hit Crystal's head when she switched sides? Maybe it was a bad idea to take the back seat after all. But, then again, Robin couldn't expect herself to actually do the steering.

Robin swallowed the lump in her throat and spoke in the meekest voice she could manage, "Just, um, tell me which direction to start. You're the driver."

Smiling nervously, she hoped against all odds that her partner wouldn't decide to throw her off the boat. If looks could kill...

crystal frost

Robin was obviously starting to get nervous and Crystal could almost feel tremors coming off the camper in vibes. It was also extremely distracting.  Just when she thought the situation couldn't get any worse, it did.

"I'm the driver?" Crystal's voice came out sharply incredulous. If both her hands hadn't been busy holding the paddle, she would have slammed a hand into her face in utter disbelief. "The one at the back steers, flamehead."

Then something else occurred to her. If Robin didn't know that basic information, she probably also knew next to nothing about canoeing. It was clear to Crystal now that she was in a canoe with someone who did not know how to paddle, much less steer. Frustration at the prospect of being last in the race threatened to drown her in a swirling vortex. That is, if the lake didn't do it first. At the rate they were progressing, she wouldn't be at all surprised if her partner ended up toppling the boat.

"Hold the paddle," she demonstrated irritably, "and then just row it. Opposite mine." Crystal wasn't aware that her instructions were so vague she might as well not have said it at all. She was more focused on the fact that they were way behind everyone else. Yes, their canoe was currently moving forward, but that was due to the elements than any sort of effort by its riders.

"Relax and hurry up," Crystal commanded, as if expecting Robin to do both at the same time. "It's like you're frozen."

Wait what.

Stunned, Robin stared uncomprehendingly at Crystal, cold dread spreading from her chest to the tips of her toes. What Crystal said couldn't be possible. Didn't drivers take the front seat? It was always that way with cars. Okay, so the concept of backseat drivers existed but they weren't literally steering the wheel. But then...

"Oh no. Oh no no no... I'm not in a car. I'm in a boat," Robin finished her thoughts aloud, her voice faint.

She flushed, becoming a total flamehead. She grew aware of other sounds, like the laughter from the crowd. And although she and Crystal weren't exactly the cause of such laughter - a fellow competitor ten feet away had capsized... again - Robin felt like all the jeers pointed to her. And that, coupled with Crystal's growing annoyance, made her chest tingle and her stomach squirm so bad that she felt like throwing up.

She held herself together, but only barely. She dunked the paddle into the water and sent splashes everywhere.

"I'm sorry. I-I thought the one in front steered. I-I've never really done this before." The paddle no longer weighed her down - the embarrassment had injected adrenaline into her arms. Later, her arms would kill her. But then, Robin realized that she was rowing in the same direction as Crystal. "Omigods-I'm-so-sorry" - she heaved the paddle to the correct side, and in her haste she almost hit Crystal - "sorry!"

Red-faced and sweating bullets, Robin kept her gaze on her paddle - which still moved at a gradual pace since, let's face it, she wasn't the strongest demigod in the block. She tried her best though, and in Robin's standards this already was some pretty fast rowing. The best thing that could be said was that Robin followed at least one of Crystal's instructions: to hurry up.

"...I'm not in a car. I'm in a boat."

Crystal bit back a dry reply. No shit, Sherlock. Instinctively casting her eyes to Zeus' domain, she released a short, irritated breath instead.

And then Robin finally told her the something she should have said right at the start. This time, Crystal suppressed the sigh but not her comment. "That much is obvious."

The boat lurched as Robin switched sides twice and started paddling in a frenzy. Crystal grabbed the sides in alarm and shifted her weight to prevent it from overturning.

She was starting to get thoroughly exasperated at her partner. First, Robin couldn't figure out how to paddle, and now she was going too fast. Crystal swallowed rising resentment, trying to work out a way to co-ordinate with her partner by herself. If she had stopped to consider, that method would have made no sense. Instead, all that filled her mind were impossible solutions and that this was exactly why she disliked working with others. They were either too stupid or too slow. Rarely could she find anyone who had similar thinking or mindset.

Crystal thought a splash might wake the camper up. A cold one would be most effective, she decided. After all, she had told Robin to relax, and the girl hadn't done as Crystal said. Why couldn't people just listen to instructions? With the next quick thrust of her paddle, the daughter of Khione sent half the spray aimed at the back of the canoe, but not before lowering the temperature of the water around them to almost freezing.

"Stop. Apologising." The words were a teeth-gritted hiss now.

Still, Crystal felt a twinge of guilt. Perhaps it was a bit mean, but if she herself had been lagging like that, she'd definitely appreciate someone shocking her into reality too. Besides, methods that worked with her, would work for everyone else, right?

WE CAN SWIM IN SILENCE, YOU CAN PULL ME UNDER
i will drown until you care

Cold cold cold cold cold -

Robin gave a little start. Thank the gods it was little because if she had jumped even a bit more, the canoe would have overturned. Water droplets trailed down Robin's cheeks and neck, soaking the top of her orange camp shirt. Even though it was her face that got most of the splash, the icy needles creeping down her skin sent shivers through her whole body. It didn't even cross her mind to drop the heavy paddle - after wiping her face with her forearm, she hugged the stick to her chest to preserve what little body heat she had left.

The wake-up call worked though. The boat went back to its idle state.

Now if you set aside all the shivering and teeth chattering, Robin was in a state of confusion. First, she felt irritated. The emotion was just human nature of course - how else would one feel if they were suddenly subjected to an ALS Ice Bucket challenge without warning? But before she could act on impulse, Robin realized that she probably deserved it. It was her fault that they were falling behind. Her fault that she picked the backseat, her fault that she joined this race without even knowing how to paddle. The guilt overpowered the anger quickly enough. But the question that confused Robin the most? What am I supposed to do?

Robin squinted through the droplets clinging to her lashes. She could hardly make out the back of her annoyed partner.

"S-S-So - "

She bit her tongue before she could finish the apology. She didn't think she could survive another blast of that icy water. And the breeze wasn't making it any easier - the very air was an enemy, making her shudder every time it passed. Robin's shaky breaths punctuated the next few seconds. Frozen and unsure, she was afraid that any new movement would finally make Crystal explode.

The daughter of Khione had almost gotten used to the new pace when —the shock of her splash, presumably— caused Robin to stop paddling altogether. Crystal had to stab her paddle vertically into the water to prevent her own paddling from spinning the canoe. Their boat wobbled to a stop, and they were back at square one.

"Well, I see you're finally calm," Crystal muttered acidly.

So the small splash apparently had not worked. Maybe Robin needed a bigger or colder dose. Thankfully for her, just as Crystal was making her mind up as to which one exactly, a large splash of water —regular temperature— mercilessly doused them both.

Spluttering, Crystal turned to see a familiar face, though sopping wet, grinning at her in the lake like a maniac and bobbing beside an overturned canoe. It was of course, as fate so conveniently dictated, the absolute last person she wanted to see right now.

Her snarl could have belonged to a cat. "You."

Calm was not the right word. But then, Robin thought, Crystal did sound rather sarcastic. Robin still shivered every few seconds and her heart was nowhere close to slowing down. The pressure to do well in the race mounted and if it did not stop soon, Robin was going to be sick.

Splash.

Robin spat out another burst of water - not as cold this time, thankfully - and blinked the droplets out of her eyes. The second splash did help regulate her body heat. Quickly getting over the transition from freezing to normal temperature, Robin perked up at Crystal's snarl and soon saw a familiar boy floating beside an overturned canoe.

"Oh hi!" she called, smiling and waving like her usual cheerful self. Robin didn't know the boy's name, but she remembered how he helped her skate in the winter festivities from way back.

Another head broke the water's surface, this time on the other side of the overturned canoe. He spurted out a stream of water like a fountain and clung to the side of the boat. "The fish are in hysterics," he wheezed at his partner, grinning widely as he slicked his dark curly hair back, "They've never seen people so bad at canoeing that they overturn twice in two minutes. Good job."

Crystal almost couldn't believe it. Of all campers, Seth's boat had to be the one in their area. Then again, he did have the tendency of appearing as and when he liked.

"Me."  He agreed with her, hazel eyes hidden cheerfully under a mess of brown hair. His speech then took on a jesting, posh accent. "How fare you today? It's a bit wet down here. And,"  Seth's grin turned slyly innocent as he flipped a splash toward his partner in the water, "I see its wet up there too."

Crystal was about to reply exasperatedly with something along the lines of no thanks to you when he turned to the back of the boat. Now he waved a hand at Robin's greeting, incidentally sending droplets of water flying through the air in every direction. "Hey there! Robin, isn't it?"

Great. Now all they needed was for Seth to start flirting and they'd be stuck in the middle of the lake till the race ended. To take her mind off their dilemma, Crystal shifted her attention to the other kid who was also wading in the water, albeit in a better mood than one should be if their partner had just dumped them in a large body of water without warning. He had a friendly face and spoke in an animated fashion. All at once, she felt a little less tense.

Perhaps she had been taking the race too seriously, but then again, whoever Seth hung out with probably took everything less seriously than they should, so that was no judge. Crystal could also sense fights breaking out in the distance and between the other straggling boats behind them. Was this how this meeting would go?

Considering its participants, any fight wouldn't be that antagonistic, but she was certain that it was pretty much going to get very, very wet.

Robin chuckled as the dark-haired boy got another faceful of water. He just laughed it off and sent another splash toward his partner, then righted their overturned canoe. The movement caused another spray; Robin's shoes were about a half-inch deep in a thin layer of water now.

Nodding at skating-rink-boy, Robin gave him a sheepish grin. "Yup. Nice to see you again."

Robin sighed wistfully. She wished that she had partnered with either of the two boys. It wasn't that she hated Crystal... well, maybe a bit. But hate was still too strong a word.

The other boy had now clambered back into their wobbling canoe. He gave both girls a slight nod in greeting, a wide grin still playing on his lips. Dripping wet, he shook his head like a dog and used the top of his paddle to nudge the back of his partner's head. "Hey, Seth -" oh that's his name, thought Robin - "wanna bet how long we'll last before we fall in again?"

This reminded Robin that they were still in a race, and she snuck a furtive glance at Crystal. She was still in a bad mood. Seth seemed to have worsened it somehow, but... did she perhaps see Robin's sigh? Could Crystal read her thoughts? Still pale and cold, Robin tightened her grip on the paddle and meekly asked, "Should... should we get going?"
