June Prenston
june bit her thumbnail mindlessly as she sat on one of the hollowed practice dolls she had finished "defluffing" ever so expertly just moments before. with no friends, no power, and little ambition, june had been finding it increasingly difficult to keep focused on a task—no matter the importance or gravity—and the arena was the only place she found her thoughts clear. even so, the once familiar thrill of mastering weaponry had become another mundane task forced upon her (by herself) to keep her head on her shoulders. june had this tendency, you see, to go insane with a little push. she had gotten significantly better at playing sane since arriving at camp, but the amount of tragedy she had experienced in a few short weeks seemed all targeted at her weak sanity. she had been shocking everyone, herself included, with her dull response to life's injustices.
sometimes, it felt like all of camp was watching her. she could make headlines with her sob story that had managed to absorb so much attention campwide. ex-cabin leader, literal sociopath, waging wars on the gods, surviving death, escaping death, living with death, doomed to perpetually be reminded by the death, queen of death, frequent crier. the stories had mostly been blown out of proportion but they all spoke some bit of truth. mostly the crier one. june wasn't good at dealing with occasional waves of emotion. all the talk used to bother her. she didn't like people prying into her personal business, but eventually it had begun to empower her. she liked defying odds. she had a certain knack for it, she'd discovered.
although, she was doing little to "defy" any "odds." as she sat in the arena all she could think about was the twitch in her hands, the slight ache in her temples, the burn in her nose that she was sure would never go away. june had never had a drug problem. she had been a bit of a drug splurger, always pushing her small body to its limits, but only for the "standing on the edge of a very deadly cliff" feeling that had helped her through the roughest patches of recovery. (because june had always considered the few months after caleb's death her recovery period. those were her darkest days. she hardly remembers most of them.) now she was quitting cold turkey, not allowing anything to alter her thinking, because she was a big fan of being in control. she didn't always have the power of control. it was new, and she didn't want to stupidly throw it away. she didn't like being under constant medical surveillance. she was already under some sort of "celebrity watch" around camp, not unlike so many others. camp was weird like that.
the twitching stopped when she picked up a knife and sent it twisting towards another one of the dummies she had destroyed that day. it wasn't her fault there was someone standing a few inches from where the knife landed. it wasn't her fault people were dumb enough to get close. (are we still talking about the boy next to the dummy here?)
####sorry this is all over the place i haven't written in a while and its late im lame

craving their blood
The son of Zeus didn't like to be up and around doing any physical exercise unless it was skateboarding, so the fact that he had been dragged to the area was not putting him in a rather brilliant mood: Chiron thought that with a little - or a lot of, Mav started to complain - practice, he would finally be able to use his electrokinesis as a weapon without it tiring him too much. Yet, after trying for at least an hour not on a volunteered son of ares - he liked the pain of the shock, or something weird like that - mav had just ended up with beads of sweat across his brow and a level of fatigue holding down at his body. He was glad that he had tied up his brown locks into a bun today, or else he would be even hotter than he already was.

"Can we pause for a second." Maverick asked, but he wasn't exactly looking for a reply, choosing to take a break anything. He held his head up straight, his forehead creased as he started to pace, his hands on his hips as he panted. To create the energy from his hands was more effort than anyone would be able to comprehend, and he felt like he was close to collapsing, so it was so wonder that he nearly snapped when a girl threw a dagger that nearly cut at his arm. His head shot up, incredulous, "Oi! What the hell do you think you're doing?! You could've hit me then!"

June Prenston
June rolled her eyes heavily at the boy's mouthy response, standing up to appear more level, slightly excited by the fight she could hear in the boy's voice. She didn't get back talk much anymore. Anything other than pity was quite refreshing, honestly. "No, I couldn't have. I'm not an amateur, I know how to throw a knife." June snapped back, lips curling slightly up and face blushing. She sure knew how to throw a knife when she stabbed her undead best friend in the head with one, didn't she? That thought forced a laugh out of her. Her eyes were carefree, heart heavy.
Suddenly it hit her that she enjoyed the fact that this boy didn't know her. Perfect. The last people she had been close to all knew her far too well. This was a clean slate. Sure, their meeting hadn't been great. June despised being looked down upon and the fact that this boy could sass at her meant he didn't see himself as subordinate. She didn't appreciate attitudes, and she had this beef with the entire human population, but there was also something about the boy that she found interesting. Maybe it was a self absorbed interest, being unknown, but she liked it. Craved it, the more  she thought about it. "I'm June," she finally announced, smiling slightly and body relaxing. "Are you practicing your sparky thing with my brother, Peter, over there? Peter's a creep, interesting choice." June wiped her brown and sat down on the dummy she had been resting on before. "You look tired. I am too, tired I mean. Although I've been doing actual physical exercise." June raised an eyebrow at the boy, ready to judge his next move, constantly examining his responses to get an accurate reading out of him. She had to be picky with who she spent her time with, these days. Recently, they had this annoying habit of sticking around.

craving their blood
Mav had never really spent much time or energy learning who's who at camp: he couldn't really care less. He recognized a few faces here and there, and he was able to remember his friends and siblings names, yet he would rather just not really attach himself to anyone else that attended the camp. so, there was no wonder that he had no clue who this girl was, until he pointed out that the kid he was practicing on was her siblings. even then, he could only tell that she was a daughter of ares.

Looking over his shoulder at the kid that eh was practicing on - who looked very proud of himself and happy, like this was how he got his kicks - maverick shrugged a put either hands on his hips, looking back at June. "Maverick." that was his way of introducing himself. how charismatic. "your bro, huh? yeah, he seems like a right freak. he volunteered to be pumped with a bunch of volts of energy. how weird."

Her next sentence made Mav raise an eyebrow, scoffing slightly as he shook his head, although he was still out of breath, "look, june, you don't understand how tiring that is until you've done it. i've done some physical exercise in my time but it ain't nothing in comparison to that."

brush off the dirt and

LET MY CHANGE OF HEART OCCUR
June tried to repress the shiver that threatened to tingle down her back at the word "freak" but she was, for the most part, unsuccessful. She'd been called the word enough times to feel the venom in it's truest meaning, even when it was spoken so casually. No matter what part of her old life she had ever managed to leave behind, freak always seemed to stick. It was unfortunate. She didn't feel like a freak anymore, but she knew she must be. Her subconscious was uncontrollable at best. Her emotions? Powerful. June wasn't as sane as she felt, she didn't kid herself about this. In her best attempt to play off the probably awkward response, June scoffed. "You know, I should be shocked, but I'm really not in this slightest." Then, thinking back on her choice of words, she groaned quietly. "Pun not intended."

Picking at the packed dirt on one of her knives, June raised an eyebrow without lifting her glance to look at Maverick. He had an attitude. He was quickly becoming more and more interesting. "Really?" she hummed, disbelief dripping from each syllable. "Poor Zappie." June cracked a smile at the dumb nickname, almost immediately feeling more like herself.

"Hey.. Maverick, right?" June looked up then, warmth practically glowing in her dark brown eyes. The change in her personality was immense as she grew excitable. "Show me. Show me the sparks." She was a freak. She had to be, but she wasn't asking for the same reasons Peter had been asking. She didn't find joy in pain, she had suffered through enough pain to last a lifetime, but suddenly, she just had to know. "I mean, don't, like, hurt me or I swear I'll kick your ass, but I'm curios now. You gotta show me." Waggling her eyebrows subtly, June pat the space next to her on the torn up dummy. "I'll even let you sit by me."

Remembering something important, June gave Peter a sideways glance. "You can go, dipsh*watch yo profanity june*." Peter knew June. Peter fled. "Ex-cabin leader perks," she explained simply, before Maverick could ask about Peter's immediate obedience.
