The mortal world isn't the safest place for demigods. One someone is outside of the protective barrier at Camp Half-Blood, there's nothing to stop a hellhound or a fury from tearing them to shreds. You'd probably be surprised to see a demigod walking down the streets of New York, but that didn't stop Carter. He walked down the street, passing hundreds of ordinary citizens that were completely oblivious to what he really was and what he was doing. What he was doing was hunting.

Camp, while it may be the only safe place for demigods, was crowded. Ever since the gods promised to claim their children, more and more half bloods had come pouring in, filling cabins to the brim and making alone time... Difficult. Carter needed space to breathe, and eventually the only was to get it was to take a trip. He was experienced enough that it wasn't too much of a risk, but he knew that he had to be careful. His eyes darted through the crowd, scanning faces and looking for any indications that there might be a monster walking along side the mortals. His spear was slung over his back, ready to be drawn as soon as he needed it. Thanks to the mist, however, it probably appeared as a backpack or a pipe or something. The average demigod would go out of their way to avoid monsters, but Carter was far from average. As the son of Epiales, he had had his fair share of nightmares. The way he figured it, nothing in the real world could compare to the things he had faced in his dreams.

Movement. A shadowy figure across the street caught Carter's eye. It was moving fast, pushing pedestrians out of the way. Carter couldn't identify what it was, but he refused to let it get away. He burst into a sprint, crossing two lanes of traffic and almost getting hit, following the figure as it moved into an alleyway. "There's nowhere to run now." He said, drawing his spear and readying himself for a fight.

DAYDREAMING ALL THE TIME
we used to be half alive

It wasn't the white hair that struck Isaac odd. It was the backpack.

He initially dismissed it as a hallucination. Being Isaac though, he couldn't help but risk a second glance. The air shimmered. One moment, it was a regular-looking bag. In the next, it was a white celestial-bronze-tipped spear.

Isaac launched into a run.

He weaved in and out of the crowd, across the streets, nearly colliding into innocent bystanders. The cold wind whipped at his face but he felt only warmth, mostly thanks to his worn-out black hoodie. His speed nearly caused his coffee to spill - clutched in his hand was his hard-earned Starbucks capuccino, the brown liquid already streaming down the cup and to his fingers. But he couldn't slow down. Behind him thudded an equally quick set of footsteps apparently set on chasing him. Cussing under his breath, Isaac veered into the first backstreet he saw, almost toppling a baby stroller in the process.

Big mistake. It was a dead end. Isaac skidded into a stop, the inertia causing more of his drink to spill. Hissing curses, he shifted the cup to his other hand and vigorously shook his scalded fingers. At that moment, the white-haired boy appeared. His spear was drawn. Now in full view, the sight of the weapon sent adrenaline pumping into Isaac's blood.

Isaac flicked his hood off and held both hands up. One still held his coffee. Really, it couldn't have been a more comical match-up. Spear VS coffee. The thought didn't relax Isaac though, and he met the boy's eyes with the sharpest of gazes. He didn't know if this was a friend or foe, didn't really recognize the face from anywhere. Worst case scenario was if this was one of Kronos' minions. Just his luck, if that was the case.

As White Hair prepared for a fight, the corners of Isaac's lips twitched into a grimace. "Obviously. What do you want?"

To say Carter was surprised would be an understatement. The figure he was chasing turned around and practically surrendered. Monsters didn't surrender. "Who are you?" Carter questioned, not lowering his weapon. Being a child of Epiales, the god of nightmares, he had a sort of sense for creatures that are the stuff of nightmares. If this boy wasn't a monster, there was certainly a monster present.

Then he noticed what the boy was holding in his hand. "Is that... coffee?" Carter asked incredulously. He lowered his spear, still gripping it tightly but no longer using it to threaten his quarry. While he knew monsters could manipulate the mist, he highly doubted that one would be ridiculous enough to turn a weapon into a hot drink.
However that begged the question: If Carter wasn't a monster, and the boy wasn't a monster, where was the monster that had led them to this alleyway in the first place?

Carter got his answer more quickly than he would have liked. With a loud roar, a large form pounced at them from the back of the alleyway. Carter rolled to the side, dodging the attack and swiping out with his spear as the beast flew past. Unfortunately, his efforts only resulted in a shower of sparks as a celestial bronze tip scraped along the hide of the beast. When it landed, he finally got a good look at it. It's golden coat glinted in the rays of sunlight that beamed down into the alley. It's mane shook, and the creature practically radiated power.

Cursing under his breath, he quickly turned to the boy, saying "Get out of here. Now." In the moment that it took to give the order, the Nemean lion pounced again, flying through the air towards Carter.

DAYDREAMING ALL THE TIME
we used to be half alive

Isaac's eyebrows furrowed. He hadn't banked on White Hair to respond with a question - two questions actually - especially when he didn't even answer his. Isaac lowered his arms. "It's cappuccino. You can relax."

Then, a roaring Nemean lion leapt from behind him. So much for relaxation.

Isaac backed into the wall, out of the lion's path, and shielded his eyes as sparks burst out. White Hair's spear didn't even dent it. Its fur shone gold and bright in the dark alley. It stung Isaac's eyes just to look, and he barely heard White Hair's order to get out. However, Isaac had his own order to give: "Move!"

Acting on instinct, Isaac ran towards the lion and, tearing the cover off his cup, hurled his coffee at its face. Bull's eye - the hot liquid washed all over its eyes and nose. Another roar shook the air, making Isaac's ears ring and the hairs on the back of his neck rise. Temporarily blinded, the lion lost its momentum. Isaac bought a few seconds - if White Hair was quick, the lion wouldn't be able to stop itself and would crash into the building behind him.

Isaac slid his way to the other side, his back to the fight, and heard a satisfying thump and crack as the lion met its mark. Hopefully, it was the wall and not the other boy. Panting, he promptly drew his three-foot celestial bronze sword and faced the fray, wondering if his effort paid off. It should be worth it because damn, that cappuccino was expensive.
