Fey walked to the Athena cabin whistling a song he had heard on the radio last night. He didn’t know what it was called or the lyrics, but the tune was catchy enough to stick in his brain over night and still be there in the morning. He had a backpack slung over his shoulders with a few things in it. A couple of changes of clothes, a video camera, both mortal and demigod money, and assorted weapons made of different things. Sebastian opened one of the windows easily, sneaking in. Most of the campers, he saw, were still sleeping, and that was fine. Fey was only here for one person anyways, the others could go die in a hole and he wouldn’t care. He saw Emma in her bed and the demigod smirked to himself. He always wanted to do this, but he’d never had the chance before. The campers in the Hera cabin didn’t exactly like Sebastian and stayed well away from him, and for good reason. If they hadn’t, their fate would be as bad as Emma’s was going to be this morning. Fey reached for his megaphone that was strapped to his backpack and pressed the button, wincing at the feedback. He looked at Emma, hoping that the noise didn’t disturb her slumber. “YO EMMA, WAKE UP!” Sebastian screamed into the megaphone right by her ear. “THERE AIN’T NO TIME FOR SNOOZING WE GOT SOME FREAKING GHOSTS TO CATCH RISE AND SHINE GIRLY!” He quickly dodged out of the way, knowing that many campers had weapons in their bed.

Daughter of Athena

Emma looked around. Nothing. The other way? Still, nada. No matter which way she turned her head, she could not see past the suffocating darkness. She wasn't even able to see her hand when she raised it in front of her face. Dropping her arm to her side, she fished the tiny cylinder from her pocket. Pulling it out of her pocket, she readied it in front of her. She felt the cylinder tube suddenly change form, and a few seconds later, a faint glow was given off by the celestial bronze baseball bat she held. The glow was dim, but just enough that she could now properly see her arms.

Emma slowly set a foot forward... and then another... and another. She crept forward, eyes darting everywhere, almost uselessly. There was nothing stirring in the darkness beyond, and if there was she couldn't tell. So where was she? Suddenly, her head snapped around. Somewhere to her right, she had heard something. A sound that she had definitely not made. What was it? A radio? A television? It sounded like the static of something electronic turning on.

Emma's eyes flew open, head jerking to the side. She is not exactly a very deep sleeper, so the sound caught her worse than it would have caught others. Her dark curls thrashed around as she scrambled across her bed, escaping the horrid noise. Her heart beat as fast as a rabbits if it were being chased by a hawk. There was a continuous ringing in her ear as she grabbed a pillow and helplessly threw it in the direction of the noise. And then, she recognized the voice. Fury bubbled inside of her, replacing the fear.

"Fey, you utter and complete ASSHOLE!" Emma's voice was dangerously sharp, but also at a decibel level considerably lower than that of the megaphone. Although the ringing in her ear had not ceased, she picked up sounds of her bunk-mates waking angrily. A door shutting somewhere down the hall told Emma that the boy was heard through the walls. "What the HELL were you thinking?!" She slid out of her bed and advanced towards the boy. Her fingers curled into a fist and swung through the air, making firm contact with Fey's humerus.

"Get. Out." She warned. "I will meet you outside in five minutes. Just get out," she said, the fury not subsiding in the least.

The demigod laughed as Emma woke up, not in the least bit guilty that he had woken some of the other campers up. That was just apart of life, being woken up when you found it really bloody inconvenient. Fey just wanted to introduce them to the sucky part of mornings, where golden sleep dust still tainted their eye lashes, and the brain was still groggy from dreams. Of course, if they really wanted too, Sebastian could put them to sleep for a couple more hours, he was the son of the sleep god, after all. Besides, his powers were getting a little rusty from lack of use. Fey really only put himself and his ageing cat to sleep, and that was only when they had pulled all-nighter after all-nighter and their eyes were bloodshot and they could barely function. “Yep, that’s me. Asshole numero uno.” Fey said. He liked doing this to his friends, and they should be happy that Sebastian did this, because the things he had in store for his enemies and people who bullied him were far worse. A venomous snake in the bed here, shards of glass in shoes there. It was extremely spiteful and mean, but Fey got his revenge and that was all that mattered. So really, being woken up by a megaphone wasn’t bad. It was good, a sign of friendship.

“Well at first I was thinking about breakfast and how I should get some blueberry pancakes and ditch you and just go to the haunted house myself. But then I decided to come and get you because we are friends and screw food.” Sebastian said, mirth bright in his blue eyes and an eyebrow raised. He doubled over in laughter as Emma punched his arm, rubbing it as it had already begun to redden in the few seconds her fist had laid contact with his tan skin. “You can’t deny that wasn’t funny. You should have seen the look on your face, Emma. Priceless.” Sebastian continued as she told him to get out of the room, where the demigod knew he’d have to face angry Athena campers. That was no matter, he could take on any number of sissy intellects and live to tell the tale. Still snickering, Fey left without another word, knowing his cocky sentences could and probably would land him in more trouble than he already was in.

Once outside, Fey sat on the wooden floor of the cabin, smile decreasing less and less until it was a vicious frown of sarcasm and hurt. He didn’t like these people. They all gave him dirty looks, and honestly the boy didn’t think he deserved it. What he did was just a joke, nothing to be taken to heart. There was no harm done, so the campers should give him ice old stares that sent daggers shooting straight into Sebastian’s heart, which was just as frozen as the grey irises of Emma’s half-siblings. One boy had even dared to pause and look at Fey for an extended period of time, which the demigod didn’t like. “Go away, freak.” Fey whispered like a deadly dragon, his voice low and threatening. The boy obeyed. He waited a couple more minutes, and when he thought that 5 of those minutes had passed, he pounded on Emma’s door.  “Let’s get a move on! The house ain’t gonna investigate itself! Get out of the room, princess!” Sebastian shouted at his friend through the door way. It was evident that Fey Williams was not a patient and calm demigod.

Daughter of Athena

Emma's eyebrows remained scrunched together, her face dead-set in an angry expression. Not only did she hate being woken up, but by a megaphone. That was a horrible way to be woken. She still heard a high ring in her ears, and her body simply shook with a mix of fright and rage. Emma heard Sebastian snicker as he exited her room, and, in one last surge of emotion, she grabbed a pillow off of her bed and hurled it at his head. She then stomped over to the door and shut it behind him, careful not to slam it, even though she would have enjoyed that.

Sighing, Emma turned to the open room to find the unhappy faces of many of her siblings glowering at her. She closed her eyes and pressed her fingers to her temples, massaging them slightly. Sebastian was one of the most annoying people Emma had met at this place. But, believe it or not, he was also one of Emma's favorites. The main reason was that they hated the same stuff. Emma also kind of admired his no-care attitude, something that she herself was never able to obtain. No matter what she was doing, Emma always had worries piled up ten feet high on her back.

When she heard her roommates settling back into their beds, Emma opened her eyes. She padded over to her bed and bent down onto her knees. Her arms slipped under her bed, and she rummaged around in the dark for a moment. Then, she produced a small suitcase. She proceeded to fill it with an ample amount of clothes for the trip to Iowa.

Emma had done plentiful research towards the trip that they were doing. Although, it was more of Emma's planning that prompted the trip. Sebastian sort of just talked about it but didn't act. Anyway, the two were taking a plane to Iowa to stay in the Villisca house. In 1912, a family was gruesomely murdered within their own home. The walls still protect the identity of the murderer or murderers who bludgeoned to death the entire family of Josiah Moore and two overnight guests on June 10,1912. Almost 97 years later, her secret continues to draw many visitors to her door. The people say that the house is a haunting little plot, and stay away from it. Emma and Sebastian planned to do the opposite. Although it was rather expensive, the two had split the price and saved up for a while, and then they were ready to take the dive.

A violent knocking at Emma's door made her jump, interrupting her thoughts. Although irrational, for some reason she thought that she was about to meet the same fate. Upon hearing Sebastian's voice, her nerves were somewhat numbed and replaced with the same annoyance that she had had before. Emma quickly zipped up her suitcase and grabbed the small bronze cylinder from her bedstand and tucked it into her back pocket. She then rolled the suitcase to the door and pulled it open.

"Shut. Up." she hissed, before blowing past him and out the door of the cabin, knowing that the boy would not linger in there long. She expected that he despised her siblings. Although her brain had no logical answer, her gut told her that he felt a little bit humbled by his own stupidity in the presence of her siblings. But, that was psychology. A field for which Emma had no patience or respect. "Did you ring up the cab?" she asked, turning around to face Sebastian.

By the time that Emma came out of her room, Sebastian had taken the chance to lean against the doorframe, biting on his nails. It was a bad habit of his, but he didn’t feel like breaking it. Actually, come to think of it, he didn’t feel like breaking any of the bad habits he had. Biting his nails, overspending, snacking if he wasn’t even hungry, but one of the worst habits Fey had was lying. He lied to Emma a dozen times over, telling him his real name was Fey. He supposed it wasn’t a big deal that she didn’t know his real name, but apparently some girls freaked out over that little fact. Fey just hoped Emma wasn’t like that. He chose her to be one of his exclusive friends for no reason other than Fey liked hanging around Emma. She reminded the young demigod of the many friends he had before his mother had gotten sick and he skipped school so many times he lost them all. It wasn’t like she was replacing them, because she wasn’t, but it made Sebastian feel a little better knowing he wasn’t as lonely as antisocial as he had once been before knowing her. Even having Emma as a friend was odd to Fey, because he tried to limit the amount of social interaction he had even if it pained him to do so. Sebastian was trying to minimise the amount of casualties, so to speak, but Emma seemed like a strong person, Fey just hoped he hadn’t misjudged her.

When she came out of her bedroom, Sebastian smiled at how annoyed she seemed. The demigod was annoying and pitiful and just overall no fun to be around because of how outrageous he was and how inconsiderate he could be, but Fey didn’t want to change his ways. He enjoyed being a sarcastic asshole who most of the time got by by his snarky comments and handsome, devilish looks. “I shan’t!” Sebastian shouted as Emma walked past him, and Fey could almost see the storm cloud of annoyance above her. “You love me, come on, admit it.” The boy teased as he caught up with her. Fey shrugged his backpack higher on his shoulders and followed her. They were quiet until Emma breached the subject of a taxi. Sebastian scoffed at that idea.

“I don’t know it might have slipped my mind at some point or other.” The boy said vaguely as they continued to walk towards the camp’s small and overgrown parking lot. If he owned his own car, they might have driven to Iowa. Sadly, however, Fey didn’t own a car, although he knew someone who did, but he knew that the person in question would murder him for even bringing up the possibility. So Sebastian and Emma took their chances and got a plane ticket. “Yeah, I rung up the cab, relax, Emma.” Sometimes Fey just wanted to take his friend by the shoulders and tell her to quit worrying about everything all the time. Live life, take a little risk, have some fun for gods sake. Maybe he could get her to loosen up on their trip. After all, plenty of chances to make jokes.

Daughter of Athena

"I'm sure that I don't know what you mean," Emma retorted. She straightened her back. She didn't like being really outward with her emotions, and she gave an attempt to reel in her anger a bit. In no way did Emma 'love' Sebastian. In fact, there were specific reasons that he was her friend. For one, Emma was smart. Like, insanely intelligent. She knew the people of the camp, and she knew the chaos that went on. And she knew that Sebastian was one of those in camp who took great pleasure in ensuring that that chaos took place. Befriending him because of that was her logical answer. Another reason was that Sebastian could actually make a formidable friend. Emma didn't have many friends. In fact- it would even be safe to say that she didn't have any. But she had a suspicion that if it came to it, Sebastian, although seemingly unlikely, would prove loyal. That was her gut's answer to why they were friends. When it came to it, she much more preferred the first answer.

One other downfall of Emma's was that she did not catch sarcasm very quickly. She was strict about her own word choice, using only words that had importance and relevance and truth. Although she was not above lying, she didn't do so often. Especially if there was no point to it. In her eyes, sarcasm was almost like lying, and she found it as an ineffective form of communication.

"What do you mean it slipped your mind?" She asked quickly. If he hadn't called a cab before this, it might take it quite a while to get to their location. Stress was causing her muscles to bunch up, and her face was set in a stone-cold look. Hearing that he had indeed called the cab did nothing for her stress. In fact, when she realized that he had been sarcastic with her, she made a clicking sound with her tongue that suggested she was dismissing his attitudes.

'Relax' wasn't exactly at the top of her list of priorities. It was to make this whole trip go smoothly. Maybe it was what awaited her at the other end of the plane ride that was causing her to be so uptight. Emma didn't really believe in the whole notion of ghosts or any form of spirit after death. She had seen and handled a human skull and various animal bones enough to know that there was nothing spiritually significant about them. They were just physical remnants after death, which, during life, aided the body with creation of blood cells and provided structure. Still... there was something at the depths of the crevices in Emma's mind that made her frightened to step foot in the house they were going to.

Emma's thoughts had allowed there to be a small and eerie silence between her and Sebastian. She knew full well that if she did not fill it, Sebastian and his megaphone would be happy too. Gathering her wits, she gripped the handle of her suitcase tightly.

"Fine. Let's go."

Sebastian Williams

Fey rolled his eyes at Emma, as he looked on down the road for any sign of the taxi that would take them to the airport. His backpack felt incredibly light on his broad shoulders, thick with muscle he would not otherwise have if he were not at camp. Months and months of useless, countless hours of training had given Sebastian solid muscle under his skin. That was what you did as a demigod; come to camp, train, die in some horrible battle. You barely got to leave once you were inside the magical boundaries. Sebastian himself hadn’t left in years until today, and he was just itching to get inside of a car, no matter how shabby the interior would be. This trip was important to him, not only because he’d finally get out of this hellhole where he’d been forced into a disastrous greek army full of hormonal teenagers, but also because he got to be with Emma. Although he’d never state it, this daughter of Athena was Fey’s best friend in the entire world. She went on adventures with him, and he couldn’t ask for more. He thought them partners in crime. At her comment, Fey gasped, putting a hand over his chest. “I am offended.” Fey replied in a playful manner, a joyous glint in his eyes and a smile on his tanned face. Fey really hoped Emma knew he was kidding about love. No one loved him. How could they? Sebastian Williams was a narcissistic asshole, with a company to his name and an old backpack strapped to his back. “Everybody loves me.” He assured both of them. That was his first thought in the morning and his last thought at night. Everybody loves Sebastian Fey Williams.

The demigod shook his head at the girl, muttering under his breath. Even if Emma was his best friend, she was distant and somewhat cold towards him. Of course, that could be because he did shit like wake up her entire cabin by shouting into a megaphone, but Fey didn’t think that was the reason. “What did I just tell you? Relax.” This trip was about unwinding, laughing, and teasing the other tourists. Or at least that was the plan in Fey’s mind. See, the demigod didn’t believe in ghosts, not even as a child. His mother had told Sebastian at a young age that no such things existed, and she’d never lied to him before so he believed her. That faith of his had served him well throughout his years, and neither the dark nor horror movies could scare the boy. “It’ll be here shortly.” Sebastian said, trying to calm his impatience. The demigod never had enough patience and too much of a temper. Maybe it was because he had been a spoiled child in his youth. Again, he didn’t think that was the cause for his personality flaws.

The cab did arrive sooner rather than later, and Sebastian gestured towards the car as if to say see, didn’t I tell you? Aren’t I always right? He vaguely acknowledged the driver, nodding towards Emma to give him the directions to the airport. Gods knew she had a better memory than he did. Fey could barely even get the place they were going too to stick in his sleepy brain, which processed things at the speed of molasses. He placed his suitcase in the trunk and then got in the backseat, making himself comfortable as if this were his own home or car. Sebastian didn’t care about privacy or about other people’s personal space and things. The demigod always got what he wanted, and right now he wanted to stretch his legs out and put his hands behind his head and close his eyes, so that’s exactly what he did. “Emma come on don’t make me yell at you again get in the car let’s go.” Sebastian muttered, too lazy to actually put force behind the threat.

Daughter of Athena

Emma might have cracked a smile at Fey's dramatization of being mock-offended. Yes, that's right. A legitimate grin found and chiseled it's way onto her stone-cold face, otherwise void of outward emotion. Except for her eyes. Emma's eyes might be the only one thing that could reveal her thoughts. They were deep and meaningful. One look into them and you could easily tell if she was fond of you, or looked at you with distaste. One look into them and you could tell if she was pained or enthused. But one thing is for sure; her eyes always looked like she knew exactly what she was doing.

Emma doubted the legitimacy of Fey's words. She began to think about what he had said. He first thought was that his voice sounded uncertain. She had known Fey this whole time to be someone cocky and full of self-confidence. When his voice held the tiniest hint of uncertainty just then, Emma's eyes snapped onto him. Her second thought was: Who loves Emma? Certainly not everybody. Who even knew who she was? Would she be missed on this trip?

The brief moment of her insecurity let images flood in. It was Christmas. She was so eager to come downstairs to the presents that she had caught her Dad packing his things. She didn't think much of it. After all, at the time the excuse seemed legitimate. She did not know anything better. She spent the Christmas day with her neighbors. And the day after that. And after that. And her father never came home. And she missed him. So, if she did not come back to camp, would anyone miss her?

Finding herself breathing rather shallow, she forced herself to pull into reality. The images faded into the back of her mind, and she looked around, but couldn't find Fey. She turned around, fear creeping up into her of yet another abandonment, but she noticed that a somewhat new car had appeared in the parking lot. She heard his voice yell at her from inside the cab, and she let out the breath that she had been unconsciously holding.

Emma had been told before that over-thinking would get the best of her some day. She took small things and blew them up in her mind. She frequently had panic attacks that she would never admit to. Being wound so tight had caused her to fret over small things so much that she might not have been able to handle anything too big going wrong. But deep inside of her was also her courage. That small flame of courage, once tapped into, could ignite any big adventure into Emma's life, and she would face it full-on.

She gripped the handle of her suitcase and wheeled it over to the car. She hastily tossed it into the trunk and slid into the car seat next to Fey. She repeated the directions to the airport that she had memorized after a single glance at a paper a couple of days ago.

The car began to pull away from camp, and she looked out the window, watching the small lot begin to fade away down the road. Once out of site, Emma struggled to push it out of mind. She focused on the plan ahead. Get to the airport. Fly to Iowa. Stay in the house in which people were hacked to death. It seemed all spectacularly bright and cheery. It was exciting, and Emma looked forward to it. She didn't exactly believe in ghosts, but she couldn't be too sure. She was smart, and she knew that just a couple of years ago she doubted the existence of any sort of deity. And then she learned that she was the daughter of a greek goddess. Supernatural occurrences couldn't be blocked totally out of the picture.

Emma remained quiet as she stared out the window, looking at the dark street sliding by. The sun had not yet risen to reach above the trees, but the sky above them was no longer black, but a deep dark blue, signaling the arrival of morning. She was a little bit dreary and didn't feel like initiating much of a conversation with the boy next to her, not having much to say anyway. When Emma wasn't talking about sciences, she was a girl of few words.

Fey

How Emma was one of his best friends and trustworthy confidants, Sebastian would never know. She was cold, serious, and much too quiet for his tastes. However, maybe that was why he liked her so much. He needed someone to tie him down to earth, to call him a reckless endangerment to the whole of demigod society when he was planning on rushing head first into battle without so much as a shield to protect him from blows. He needed someone to tell him when he had gone to far with jokes or being egotistical. Fey needed someone to be his friend that had the complete opposite traits of him, and Emma was just the person for the job. He thought of her as the little sister he never got nor wanted, and Sebastian took it upon himself to teach her to be all high and mighty and awesome like he was. Sadly, he was failing.

When Emma stared at him, Sebastian raised an eyebrow and crossed his arms, though he didn’t say anything. To Fey, Emma was like a creepy owl in the dead of night, blinking but silent and probably judging you or herself and her life choices, and if he said anything it would scare her off or make her hit him again. Her hits hurt, Sebastian didn’t want to get hit again. Then he was in the van, and Fey could notice Emma breathing quite quickly, as if she was having some sort of attack. But he didn’t say anything about it, because if there was one thing that Emma was, it was brave and strong. If she needed help Sebastian hoped she would come and talk to him, but other than that he left her past well alone and left her to help herself when she looked panicked. He watched her silently with wide blue eyes, opening his mouth to say something but then thinking better of it. Sebastian watched the scenery out his window for the entirety of the car ride in silence.

| | |

The ride to the airport was shorter than Fey anticipated it to be, but soon they were there and he got out of the car to get his suitcase. The weather was nice for New York, and at least it wasn’t raining or snowing. Sebastian had long since gotten used to the decreased temperatures of the state, and now he no longer had to wear a coat in 50 degree weather and look like an idiot whenever he went outside, which in all fairness wasn’t that often. Fey made sure Emma was right beside him, thanked the taxi driver, and promptly walked inside the airport.

It was big and airy and quite loud, which was all the things Sebastian liked in a building. If things were too quiet the demigod felt strange and awkward, but the volume was loud here so he had no problem walking up to a worker at the front desk. Fey got right down to business and asked the man for their tickets, gave one to Emma, and went to the luggage drop off. “I never trust these things.” He told Emma as he put the suitcase on the conveyer belt. “One time I was going to Nebraska with my mom for this huge conference and I lost my favorite stuffed monkey so I threw a big tantrum and almost got detained. I know, big ambitions for a three year old.” Sebastian looked at Emma and smiled, hopefully getting her to be more happy and open with him.
