NikolaiWINCHESTER
New Years Eve had always been a favorite holiday for Nikolai Winchester. Sure, the fireworks were great and the parties even greater, but that wasn't why he loved it as much as he did. He loved New Years for one soul purpose. He made it through another year alive. With only one emergency trip to the clinic this year, Nikolai considered this a banner year for him. His eating habits improved (though only slightly), and so had his outlook on life (though this had improved greatly). At one point in his life, Nikolai had acted like Vincent Van Gogh, all sad and depressed and mopey, that is, until he found a girl. That girl for Nikolai was Livia Malcolm. And unlike Van Gogh, who had his heart shattered into a million pieces and never really got over it, Livia made Nik want to be a better person.

And so, in thanks for that, Nikolai was going to take her on a picnic to celebrate the New Years. He had a backpack sung over his shoulders, packed full with a blanket and food and drinks. Nikolai couldn't cook to save his life, so he had 'borrowed' food from the camp store and mess hall. Hey, if anybody said that that was the wrong thing to do, Nikolai would have countered it was for a good cause. And it was. He wanted to do something nice for Liv today. Nik waited on the beach, feeling the water lap up against his worn orange chuck taylors, soaking the thin canvas fabric and sloshing inside his shoe. That was the only thing bright about his outfit. Nikolai wore black and white, a white shirt, and a black peacoat jacket, with dark jeans to match. He also had on glasses like the ones that sterotypical nerds wore, but with fake lenses. Nikolai was a nerd at times. Nik's sword was hidden away in the pocket of his jeans, disguised as a charm. One could not be careful enough at night, especially if you were a demigod such as he was.

He silently wondered what the night had in store for the two of them. Only time would tell, but Nik hoped that it would go according to plan. He heard someone approaching him, and Nikolai could only assume it was Livia. His heart beat wildly in his chest, and Nik hoped he wouldn't royally screw this New Years Eve picnic up with some stupid line. He had a tendency to mess things up. Like his life. He had messed that up pretty badly. So he turned and smiled. "Hey," Nik said. It was lame, but it was better than nothing.

Livia,

It seemed so funny that one person could make a difference - one stranger, two words. I care. Livia couldn’t imagine herself getting over the ZA so quickly. She could barely remember herself laughing. The last time she smiled was with Nik - and only because he made her.

But this was new years and it was time to forget and hide herself from everyone else. She let Nik in, but he didn’t deserve those guilt trips placed on him. They were part of the past now - and Livia had found a different coping strategy. Ignoring it. And that was what she did. Tucking her sword into her belt - Livia never went anywhere without it now - it no longer gave her shivers as soon as she touched it. In fact, she wanted it with her. That way she could fend off the bad guys. And maybe my having that by her side - she knew she was strong. She was proving it to people who didn’t really care. In reality Livia was proving it to herself.

If Livia wasn’t constantly keeping herself strong she would fall to pieces. And even Nik couldn’t pick her up then. She shook the thought out of her head as Livia walked down to the beach. She was barefoot - her flip flops were nowhere to be found and Livia didn’t mind walking around barefoot. The sand didn’t bother her feet anyways. Thankful that her brushed hair (for once) was braided and away from her face, Livia tugged the short remainder of bangs from the braid as she placed one foot in front of the other, focusing on the dark clad figure that was Nikolai Winchester.

Livia never normally brushed her hair. But her ADHD had finally won and she had to spend every single free moment doing something otherwise she would implode. Livia guessed that wasn’t such a bad thing. People who had just met her no longer saw that sad pathetic girl she used to be. They saw a distant and haughty figure, seemingly incapable of feeling.

Livia sat down next to Nik, letting the water lap at her bare feet. It didn’t get close to wetting Livia’s impractical clothing (as always), as her jean shorts barely fell halfway down her thighs and her sweater was only getting dampened by the wet sand.. It was cold, but Livia didn’t really care and she liked the feeling of being completely free and careless - as if she could forget her problems for just a second and everything would be alright and she would be free for once and for all.

Grabbing a twist bottle of a slightly alcoholic bubbly drink, Livia took a chug, and then placed it in the sand. ”Hi.” She said softly

NikolaiWINCHESTER
Nikolai was good at forgetting. It was how he made it through the past two New Years. Remembering meant unwanted memories, and unwanted memories could cause an array of things that Nik wasn't ready to bring up again, mostly Anorexia Nervosa. But also forgetting drove monster Nik away. He hoped that Liv was trying to forget too. Murdering someone was horrible, but if you were really sorry about it and you admitted it, Nik thought you should be allowed to forget about that. If Liv was really sorry (and Nik really hoped she was, because he didn't want a murderer for a girlfriend) she should let go of those awful months when Nikolai was in rehab.

He watched as Livia took a bottle and drank some of its contents. Nik did the same thing, knowing full well what the liquid had in it. Nikolai Winchester was no stranger when it came to alcohol. He had picked up his first beer when he was ten, when Cas offered him one in their garage. When the bullying got tough, Nik had resorted to drinking to wash away his problems, to forget, even if it was just for an hour or two. Nikolai remembered the night Sam found him downing a bottle of vodka and got through to him just in time to make him stop before he did any permanent damage to his preteen body. That was before his eating disorder, but after monster Nik had won, craving perfection and spitting out anything less. Was Nikolai proud that he drank at such an early age? No, he wasn't. But it was a way for the world to recede along with the problems and worries of everyday life. It was hardly good for him, but then again, neither was Anorexia, and that had continued on longer than his life of drinking every night had.

While Nikolai was deep in thought about his childhood and how horribly morbid it was, he failed to notice Liv greeting him until long after the chirp of the crickets and the lap of the waves overtook the two demigods like a big cotton blanket. Nik looked at Liv again. "You look nice tonight," He said just as softly as Livia. His voice was oddly strained. This was the first girl he had a crush on, so really Nikolai was new at this stuff. He looked at his watch. 11:59 it read. Soon it would be 2014, and Father Time would shed his old skin like a snake and be reborn into a brand new baby, giggling and bright and beautiful and innocent. Though, that wouldn't last forever. In 2014 there would be wars. Big wars. Wars that would consume both mortals and demigods alike. Nik couldn't understand why there always had to be evil in this world. Of course, without evil, he wouldn't be Nikolai Winchester today.

There was rumbling off in the distance, and Nik took it for early fireworks or deep dupstep beats shaking the ground and disturbing the dead millions of miles below them. "You know," Nik started to say. If he wanted this, he would have to do this fast because midnight was almost upon them. "I've never had a New Years kiss before." Nerves took over the young boy and he closed his eyes and leaned in, almost regretting his decision. Nik could only hope Livia would laugh in his face stand up and point at him. He'd been having that nightmare for the past three days. It was only his past coming back to haunt him at such a good time in his life, but Nikolai was determined not to let it ruin him, or his chances with Livia.

Then there was shouting. Not the shouting that came with joy of the new year, but fearful shouting like the kind in horror movies. Nikolai pulled away, opening his eyes and scanning the area around him. Monsters were coming. The once hopeful, peaceful start to 2014 Nik had planned for was ruined and smashed. He grabbed the charm in his pocket which turned into a sword. "Oh my gods," He whispered as he looked at Livia, wide eyed. "Look, I really care if you die, so please try not too." There was only one thing to be done at a time like this (It didn't include Nik sweeping Liv into his arms and kissing her before running off into battle to defend her like the movies portrayed. Nik knew full well Liv could defend herself.) and so Nikolai Winchester charged into the mass of monsters, some of them he knew, others were strange to him. The picnic was forgotten as one thought raced through Nik's brain: Shit. I don't know how to fight.

Livia,

Livia was glad Nik said nothing about the alcohol. She offered it to Nik and soundlessly, he took some. The alcohol was concealed inside a thermos, illegally smuggled in by some of the Hermes campers. Livia had asked for it and they had obliged. She had always been in good standing with the hermes campers and they willingly gave it to her, complete with a goofy grin. She knew that the others were using it for fun. Liv never really liked alcohol as a kid. Her father drank it a bunch (not enough to be considered an alcoholic, but still) and the taste never appealed to Livia. She was pleased to note that her taste hadn't changed as she took another swig of it and almost spat it out before answering Nik's compliment. Swallowing and letting the rough drink sting her throat, Livia smiled at the ground.

"You too." She said gently. For some reason, Nik was one of the few people where she lost her cold, hard demeanor with. Maybe it was because she loved him; but not in the way she loved Quell and Faye. This was different.

And suddenly, without realizing it, it was almost new years. The fireworks seemed to be rumbling in the distance. And Nik was admitting that he had never kissed anyone at midnight. Liv nodded. She had never kissed anyone; although she though she might've had she gotten the chance. And they were leaning in together; their lips met and Livia could feel her heart beating in her chest - a violent electricity ran through her veins and she was running on pure adrenaline. She could hear Nik's heart beating too. Hard. They both seemed to have no sense of remembrance of what actually to do. Their lips fit together so perfectly, as if they were modeled as one and Livia wondered why she had never noticed the softness of his lips against hers. Her lips were dry and cracked, but it didn't matter. Nothing did. And in that moment, Livia felt so free from all her responsibilities and obligations.

Then they parted and Liv turned away, smiling at the ground. And it was new years, it was 2014 and suddenly the rumble of thunder in the distance became a reality and hundreds of monsters were charging at the and Liv grabbed her sword which she had carried around just for this reason and sprinted towards the battle after Nik. She wasn't really ready to fight; the ZA had left her untrained and frisky, but for some reason, imagining was worse than the actual thing. Her nightmares wandered but Livia was strong and she wouldn't let them take a hold of her reality.
"Don't worry, I'm not going anywhere." Livia grinned, impaling a large doglike monster with the blade of her sword held outward. It was a different fighting style than Liv was used to but the monsters just disintegrated and Livia had not time to react. They were not like the humans she had killed in the ZA.

NikolaiWINCHESTER
Well this was an excellent way to start off the New Year. First a kiss, and then you were thrown into a battle where you got your ass kicked. Nikolai fought as hard as he could, stabbing left and right, getting sand in his shoes and blood in his hair. Monsters died at his hand, and Nik would have hated himself for doing what he was currently, but they did mess up his first date with Livia. They had to pay. The monsters were slow and stupid and clumsy, which made them an easy target for Nik to kill. If only Monster Nik could be like that. But Monster Nik was fast and swift and deadly like an assassin born and trained to kill a political leader. Nikolai was never going to get rid of him, no matter how hard he tried.

And no matter how hard he tried, Nikolai Winchester couldn't shake off the real monsters in front of him, piling around him like a circle. He wasn't a fighter. He wasn't a warrior. He was just Nikolai, and he was going to lose this battle. Maybe it was because he knowingly skipped classes. After all, he was stuck here for a couple more years, there was no way monsters were going to get into camp. Nik groaned at his stupidity. Maybe part of him losing was because of the fact that his mind still lingered on the few seconds where he and Liv actually kissed. It was perfect, exactly how he imagined it to be. It wasn't a fake kiss, at least, not for Nik it wasn't. He really did love Livia Malcolm, and he really did love kissing her too.

Nikolai dodged a blow from a ugly minotaur. Gods, it was hideous, and he wondered when the last time it practiced good personal hygiene. At least when Nik was in the clinic all depressed and mopey he still took showers every other day. Nik stabbed the monster, and felt all the bones and blood and skin of the minotaur turn into gold dust that surrounded him. Because of how many monsters Nik and Liv had killed, you couldn't tell regular sand from the sand of dead monsters. Nik was surprised that blood hadn't turned the entire lake a crimson red. As Nik prepared to charge into another battle with a different but equally nasty monster, he tripped on a log, sending sand flying around him, the little pebbles taking flight for a few seconds. He was blinded momentarily, and that perhaps was the reason why Nik couldn't see a monster, one he couldn't quite name, charging straight towards him, a deadly spear poised in its hand. Nik started to get, and the monster threw the spear and it hit the young demigod in the stomach, the steel hard tip buried in his body.

Nikolai looked down, awestruck, trying to form words but unable too. With his fleeting strength , he pulled out the spear and fell down, crying out in pain, letting his scream echo throughout the beach. Blood pooled around him, and Nik's vision started to go dark. "Liv," He barely whispered, hoping she could hear him. Then, there was nothing.

Livia,

It disgusted Livia how easily she seemed to pull her sword in and out of these monsters, trying hard not to watch them crumble, stumbling after Nik. Livia didn’t know how much fighting experience the boy had and she wasn’t about to let him die. Not on her watch he wasn’t. Livia tried to keep her eyes off the monsters surrounding her, her head on Nik. ”Keep him safe,” Livia whispered to herself, stabbing another monster in the back.

Wiping monster goo off her cheek, Livia’s hand whipped over her lips, wiping all of Nik’s scent away. Livia bit her lip, as if she was a schoolgirl and stabbed a monster in the chest. Oh how funny it was that she could still feel emotion when Livia was killing things right in front of her eyes. Soon Livia was just trudging along piles of monster guts. She wished they would disintegrate into dust, but for some reason, some of them weren’t. Or maybe it wasn’t monster parts that spread across the ground. Maybe it was her fellow half-bloods. Her siblings.... Quell and Faye! Livia’s eyes shot around. She saw Quell further down the beach, bleeding slightly, but otherwise fine. And limping.. He gave her a grim smile before tearing a monster off his bad leg. But Livia didn’t have time to worry about her brother. He was fine on his own.

Nik didn’t have such luck. The world seemed to be slowing down around Livia. ”NO!” She cried, horrified at the thought of Nik’s body, a spear shoved into his stomach. A tear dropped down Livia’s cheek but she ignored it, running towards him and catching Nik’s shoulders. ”Nik? You can’t die on me now, not now.” A tear landed on Nik’s small body. He looked so fragile. The monsters seemed to clear a path around them, but that was only for a second. Livia knew she would have to move Nik and fast.

Fumbling in her pocket for a bandage, a piece of ambrosia, nectar, something. Of course, Livia’s pockets turned out empty. She couldn’t go searching for them now. Pumped with adrenaline, Livia tried to lift Nik. He couldnt’ve been that heavy to lift, but for some reason Livia couldn’t do it. Instead she held Nik in her arms, keeping his head up with the crook of her elbow. Everything seemed so distant now, everything but him. Shaking, Livia reached into her jeans pocket. There were a couple squares of ambrosia. Breathing sighs of relief, Livia gently pressed one to Nik’s mouth. ”Please.” She said, her voice cracking.

NikolaiWINCHESTER
Everybody died, in the end. You couldn't avoid dying, it was inevitable. Only the gods, high and mighty on their thrones up in Olympus could cheat death, and sometimes even that failed. They were immortal. Humans were not, and that included demigods. So by default, that made Nikolai prone to death. He had always wanted to die, and once or twice he had tried to end his own life. Obviously those plans had failed, but it did manage to bring unwanted attention both at home and at school. But now that Nikolai had everything, everything he could have ever wanted, now he had to die. Fates were cruel, once you had something, they took another thing away. This time just happened to be Nik's very life. He couldn't stop dying, he couldn't stop the descent into Hades no matter how hard he tried. He couldn't do anything but lay there among the sand and the pool of his own blood, feeling his life trickle out by the seconds. Nikolai's eyes were still closed, fluttering here and there, but they couldn't open.

And then there were hands under Nik's arms, and someone was holding him. Nik didn't even need to think about who it was, he already knew. Liv. It was Liv who had caught him just seconds before he gave into death. She was crying, and Nik wanted to jump up, his wound gone, and he wanted to kiss the teardrops from her face and say how sorry he was for tricking her into thinking he was dead. But he couldn't. So instead of doing that, he just talked, even though it was hell for him too."Don't, don't cry, Livia. Not for me." Nik said, his voice barely a whisper. He was going to die. "It's okay. Please... please don't cry."

It was getting harder to breathe, like his chest was being pushed on by 5 million tons of rocks. Nik had to gasp to get the right amount of air. Even though he knew he was going to die, that wouldn't stop Nikolai from being here as long as possible to be with Liv. Liv was all he had in this world that kept him from becoming a monster. Without her by his side, Nik would have been dead a long time ago, overcome by the need to be perfect. But the good Nik was dying faster than monster Nik, and the goodness inside him was deteriorating quicker than he could've ever thought possible.

He turned his head to the side when Liv put the ambrosia to his mouth. Nikolai wasn't hungry, and maybe that was a side effect of dying, he wasn't sure. "I can't." He uttered weakly. This was true, how was he supposed to digest something when he got stabbed in the stomach? Ambrosia wouldn't do much good, he thought. Then again, Livia probably knew more about healing than he did, after all, Nikolai did skip all the classes he could. It was his own fault, really. If he wouldn't have been so stupid and actually watched what was happening around him, maybe he wouldn't have gotten stabbed. But he wasn't worried about dying. He had already accepted his fate. He was worried about the grief he knew he was going to cause Livia when he was gone. "Liv, I love you." Nik said, and he wanted to open his eyes and see her face one last time and give her one last reassuring smile before he went. His eyes however, wouldn't grant him that simple wish.

Livia,

Livia could feel her heart rate rizing, her body heading in the direction of shock and panic. Nikolai was dying, and Livia shook as she held him in her arms. Livia tried to stand up once more, and although Nik was lighter than she originally thought, it was hard to lift anything, especially a fragile body when you were shaking as if the world was moving beneath your feet. However, Livia did it, safely (or as safely as possible) moving Nik to the dunes and resuming her position over him there. Oh darling, perfect Nik. She had thought him immortal, but in the back of Livia’s head, something told her a demigod. All mortals had to die one day, all demigods were prone to dying soon.

Livia wanted to go screaming to the fates, screaming to Hades to save Nikolai, even to her mother, who could do nothing to interfere with the lives of her children. Maybe just this once, although running screaming to Olympus and beating any god who got in her way into a bloody pulp was not the best way of doing it. Despite this, Livia found herself muttering words in Greek in the general direction of the sky. She wasn’t really sure what they meant, but Liv knew it was a plea for help. ”Μητέρα Ξέρω ότι μπορείς να με ακούσεις. Εάν μπορείτε να κάνετε τίποτα, παρακαλώ να το κάνετε. Παρακαλώ.” Livia finished and quickly redirected her attention to Nik.

He was dying and, in her state of panic, Livia had forgotten what was most important here. Him. Why would Nik not eat the ambrosia? Livia started to shake again, her momentary calm replaced by an anxious disposition. ”You can’t die now. Nik... Please.” Livia said slowly, quickly reaching around into the small pocket on the inside of her boots for a minescule flask of nectar. She had kept that on her since the ZA. Livia didn’t need another person to die because of her. Surely Nik would drink that, if not the ambrosia. Without waiting for reassurance, Livia tipped the flask down Nik’s throat, holding his head up so he wouldn’t choke. When she was sure that he ingested at least some of the liquid, Livia dropped the now empty flask. She brushed the hair out of Nik’s face, gently touching his cheek. Livia didn’t bother concealing the tear streaks on her face, slowly streaming down. Nik’s breathing was shallowing, and Livia realized the probability of him dying were very high. Suddenly Livia wished she could transfer the pain from Nik to herself, like she had seen in a tv show or book, a long time ago. She wanted it so badly that Livia found herself gripping Nik’s shoulder, as if that would take away his pain. Livia gave Nik a small smile, through her pain and tears. If he was going to die right here, at least he could see her smile. ”It’s gonna be okay. It’s going to be okay.” Livia said, although

Suddenly Livia heard the loud sound of someone running up the dunes to help them. It was a boy she had never seen before, about her age. Silently, the boy motioned for her to move, his friend hurrying up behind them. Livia got the message that they wanted her to step back, but Livia gently removed herself from underneath Nik’s body. The two demigods seemed to have it under control, but Livia steadied her shaking legs and stood up. ”I can do it.” She said firmly, picking up Nik’s shoulders while the boy got his legs. They stumbled toward the infirmary together.

Nikolai, though all the pain and death and blood, was vaguely aware of Livia, always consistently by his side. She was his constant, his north star, so to speak. Nik was very happy that she chose to stay with him, because if he was going to die, he wanted to die in her arms, even though that would damage her beyond belief. He didn't want that to happen to her. He didn't want to go, not when he had finally found a purpose in life. It wasn't fighting monsters. It wasn't foiling Kronos, it was making sure that Livia felt safe and secure and happy, because after Nikolai had met her that fateful day in the cabin courtyard, well, nothing else really mattered to him, not really. He only saw Livia inside of his mind, though he felt the pain of so many things. Nikolai felt the sharp stab of the spear, of course, but he also felt the taunts and jeers of his former peers.

Everything was slowly slipping away from Nikolai. Every sense, every everlasting thought, every breath that left his body seemed like his last. He didn't need anyone to tell him to hold on, or to not die, because he had already tried that. Nik couldn't possibly hold on for any longer than he had too, that wasn't how life worked. You lived and you died. You didn't have any say of when you departed, even though personally Nikolai thought that was bullshit. He wanted the option of dying to be open to him whenever he wanted. Though, if he had his way, he would have been dead a very long time ago, and he would have never met Liv. So he thought that Hades was finally doing him a favour, letting him stay for as long as he did. Nikolai's sense of sound was decreasing rapidly, and he could barely hear Liv speak in different tongue than he was used to, but he knew it was Greek.

Nikolai Winchester was scared. Oh gods, he was scared. He shivered weakly in his paper thin skin, making his glass encased skeleton shake. "Liv, don't let me die, please. I'm scared. I- I don't want to go." Nik didn't accept it now, as he did moments before. He had grown to love camp, he had grown to love the people inside it. It wasn't fair that he would lose it all now in this instant, because of a simple, stupid mistake. But not dying wasn't an option. Nik was going to take the descent to Hades tonight, and every second placed more and more fear inside his weakening form. "Please don't make me go." He cried. Nik hardly ever cried, he hardly ever seemed broken nowadays. But dying stripped you of your defenses.

And then his head was lifted up a little bit, it caused him an extreme amount of pain, but he didn't scream or cry out, Nik just merely shut his eyes tighter. Liquid was poured into his mouth, and he was forced to swallow. It tasted warm and delightful, like the apple cider he used to have as a little kid. He gave a half smile as he recalled those memories back to life. His childhood wasn't completely horrible, it seemed. There were some good parts, like the freezing winter nights when Sam, Cas, their father, and Nik would all sit in the living room with popcorn and cider and candy watching movie marathons as they were all wrapped up in fuzzy blankets. Nikolai realized what it was: Nectar. This was hopefully going to heal him.

But the nectar had barely passed down his throat when Nikolai Winchester stopped breathing.
