TAYLOR BROOKS
STANDING FROZEN IN THE LIFE I'VE CHOSEN.
The chilly winter air whipped hard at Taylor's face the moment she opened the cab door. Her white boots dug deep in the freshly fallen snow. A sigh escaped her partly open lips, out of relief or contentment, no one could really tell. Taylor herself didn't know what to feel, and she was still a little out of it when a rough male voice called her back.

"Are ya sure yar stopping here, missy? Ain't nothing on top of that hill."

Jeez, I know what I'm doing, Mister, was what Taylor thought, but she put on a smile and said, "I'm sure. Thank you."

She didn't even look back as the cab sped off, her attention now on the snow-capped hill. A few months ago, she didn't stop to look back. She just raced down, her bag in tow, her eyes set forward. No goodbyes, no nothing. Taylor vowed never to give it a second glance. She didn't want to.

And look at you breaking your own promises, chirped a voice at the back of her mind. Typical.

Taylor sighed as she started the lone trudge up the hill. In a few moments she would see it. She would see everything she turned her back on, staring at her and being like 'oh hey, I thought you didn't need me anymore.' She didn't, not really. She just wanted to be here for a short while. She wanted to spend the holidays with some company, not in an empty mansion that probably housed the ghost of her dead father. The father that I don't even remember that well...

But she cast that thought off, along with the many others that took hold in the past few months. She had to get rid of all the negativity. Her memories were gone, and scornful thoughts about them weren't going to bring them back. It was time to move on. Time to grow up.

Her lips tugged in the faintest hint of a smile as she stood there on top of Half Blood Hill. Finally.

She saw the dragon Peleus sleeping in a bed of snow, the Golden Fleece shimmering brightly behind it. She saw the Big House in the distance, its roof now snowy white, and for a moment she wondered if Chiron knew about her absence, or if he even cared. With so many campers around, how the hell could the old centaur keep track?

Shaking her head slightly, Taylor shrugged off her winter jacket. She didn't need it now. Campers didn't need to ask why she was not wearing a jacket in this season. They knew before she could say a word, they could tell that she was a daughter of Khione.

Daughter of Khione, she thought in a mixture of amusement and disdain. But, like all others, she shrugged it off.

Taylor swung her jacket on her back and faced it all. Realizing that she was alone, she gave a derisive snort. "Welcome back, Taylor."

the cold never bothered me anyway [private] Tumblr_lat302zswn1qc4g8vo1_r1_500

Obviously pushing my cat off my bed had been a bad idea. It wasn't like it was all my fault though, not really. If Smudge hadn't decided to jump up onto my bed with his big fat furry body (Overstatement, ok, fine, I'll admit that. Smudge was as far from fat as could be. Still furry though), then he wouldn't have been pushed off in the first place. I wouldn't have even minded if he'd jumped up at the end of my bed, cause at least he would have kept my feet warm. But no, he decided to jump right up by my head. Worse still, while I was asleep. Needless to say I'd woken up straight away. And the first thing I did when I woke up? Push the good for nothing cat off my bed and fall asleep again. It had evidently been a bad idea though, because when I'd woken up an hour or so later- Smudge was nowhere to be found.

    Stupid cat.

He was probably the stupidest cat I'd ever come across, honest to Gods. He made this big deal about it being snowy and not being able to go outside and then annoys the hell out of me for the few days it had been snowing, but as soon as he gets pushed off the bed? Straight out into the snow, where he was gonna get cold and wet (If he hadn't already) just to spite me. Well, if he thought I'd be all cuddles and towels to dry him off with when I finally found him slash he found his way back, he had another thing coming. Let him be wet and cold, he jumped up onto my face and ran away cause I gave him exactly what he deserved. And not only was he now punishing himself, he had achieved his goal and was punishing me too. Not like I could just leave him out there and not do anything (Ok, so I could, but jeez, animal abuse much?). So I had been forced to go out and look for him.

It was so cold, that was my main problem with going outside. I wasn't a Christmas person- actually, I wasn't a holidays person. I didn't like Easter and Thanksgiving and all those things, so Christmas was just another one of those things I could put on my hate list. Not only was it a crap holiday though, it was also one of the only holidays it snowed on. And I didn't like snow. I didn't like any cold thing, to be honest. Or anything that was wet. One reason why my cat was gonna have to sit by a fire for like seven hours before I'd even consider stroking him. If I could even find him. Except for his little smudge mark on his fur, he was pure white. Not really perfect conditions to see a pure white cat? Shivering slightly, I pulled my black winter jacket closer around me. Damn that cat. I was gonna kill him. Horribly.

    Wait wait wait wait.

Was that a glimpse of a tail? Against the red paint of the Ares Cabin? Stalking a little closer, I tried not too make to much noise (Kinda impossible with the crunch of snow, but hey, can't blame a girl for trying). Peeking around the corner, I studied the snow at the bottom of the Cabin... pawprints.

    GOTCHA!

Or not. No sooner had I reached the back corner of the cabin, my stupid, stupid cat came hissing and spitting out from around the corner, zooming past and not even giving me the tiniest bit of a chance to catch him.

'Smudge! I am going to kill you!' surprise the cabin's windows didn't shatter from the noise level of my shout after the damn cat.

I was wearing snow boots, so I was pretty confident it was impossible to fall. Which was why, like an idiot, I went tearing after the cat. I ran past countless camper's all doing snow stuff, even a little kid making a snow angel (Delighted to see that Smudge had gone tearing through an earlier attempt at a snow angel, wreaking the little snow wings and stuff). But no sooner had I left the U of the Cabin's, I started to run out of breath. Idiot cat. He was running straight for the hill.

Slowing to a lovely little walk at the base of the hill, I stuck one gloved hand into my pocket and pulled out the pack of extra-strong's I'd bought yesterday. Only a couple left- damn, had I gone through the 20 pack already? It was possible I needed to start getting like 40 packs or something, cause I couldn't keep spending money like I was. Anywho, I pulled the lighter out of the worryingly empty pack, and lit one of the fabulously strong cigarettes. Taking a deep puff, I started the long climb up the hill, my breath coming in little pants. Running took a lot out of a person, especially when they were concentrating on not slipping. (Had nothing to do with the excess amounts of cigarettes I'd been smoking lately. Nope.).

But jeez, if I'd thought things couldn't get that much worse, they did. Cause no sooner as I'd crested the hill and gave myself a congratulatory puff of cigarette smoke, I heard her. The voice was unmistakable.

    "Welcome back, Taylor."

Oh great. Oh thank you Gods of above, this was exactly what my already dismal life needed. Cause sure enough, as soon as I turned my head, I spotted her. Not even that far away. Enough I could speak and she'd hear it. Possibly get a little startled, cause I was behind her (Oh please, let her be startled. Maybe if she fell I could have a nice little laugh).

'I don't know Popsicle. I wouldn't be welcoming you back anytime soon.'

At least not out loud, snort.

'Long time no see. Shoulda known that you'd return to your natural habitat as soon as the first hint of snow graced our beautiful Camp though.'

TAYLOR BROOKS
STANDING FROZEN IN THE LIFE I'VE CHOSEN.
"I don't know, Popsicle. I wouldn't be welcoming you back anytime soon."

Of course. Of freaking course. Taylor's jacket swished as she whipped around, one eyebrow arched and her lips mashed together - looking like they were fighting off a smile.

"Really? Natural habitat? You make it sound like I'm a penguin." Taylor couldn't help but snort. "Well, nice seeing you again, Rana."

Rana Jackson, the daughter of Eris. For days (or weeks or months - hard to tell) they had been locked up in an almost airtight underground maze with another demigod - a son of Hades. Until now, Taylor was uncertain as to where they stood. She was sure as hell that Rana didn't count her as a friend. Fate pushed them together and they had to work together to survive, but that's it. Nothing but the work of nature and quite possibly instinct. If the threat of death didn't hang over their heads, Taylor would bet that they wouldn't have done the things they did.

Through it all, the sight of Rana here in camp still brought Taylor a slight sense of confusion. It was unnerving to see her under the fading sunlight, with no dim torches and smoking twigs. It was unnerving to see her not as a forced ally, but a normal-looking girl caught up in the familiar tangle of demigod lives.

Taylor gave her a once over, her eyes lingering a second longer on the stick clipped between her lips.

A faint memory surfaced, one that involved a fallen cigarette and a satisfying stomp on Taylor's part. The cheeky grin she had been trying so hard to fight now spread across her face.

"You haven't changed much, I see."

Then she made a sudden motion - in one second she had taken a step towards Rana, her hand made as if to grab her cigarette. But Taylor only groped the air a mere half-inch from it, her fingers not even touching the thing. It was the kind of move that would startle anyone, or at least make them blink in surprise. But this time, as Taylor let her hand fall, Rana's cigarette was still safely tucked between her lips.

"I'm surprised you're still alive," she said, smirking. "No signs of lung cancer yet?"

and we'll never be royals, royals,
    it's not in our blood,
that kinda lux just ain't for us,
we crave a different kind of buzz,
let me be your ruler, ruler
you can call me queen bee,
and baby, i'll rule, i'll rule, i'll rule, i'll rule...
    let me live that fantasy.

She swung around (Teehee, looked like I'd startled her.), and for a second, I needed to actually... study her. What happened to the red? Her hair was auburn now, an all too natural looking auburn. Was that Taylor's actual color? No. Way. I'd always thought she was a blonde, truth be told, but wow. Auburn. Actually, that wasn't the only difference... I couldn't put my finger on it, but it was like the Daughter of Khione had changed in some way. Not just the hair color, though that must have played a part in my perception of her. But no, there was something else too. It would probably take me a while to work it out, but I was determined to find that change, cause... well, cause it was a change I knew was there but couldn't quite see, and it had my interest and damn I just wanted to know.

'I believe that you, be not-so-dear girl, have earned yourself a new nickname! I like the ring of "Penguin", don't you?' what was her list of nicknames now? Popsicle, icecream, penguin, a couple others?, 'Hey, I see you haven't lost that unattractive snorting habit. You might wanna get that looked up, it could be an early sign of something.'

Maybe it was just the hair color that changed.

I considered, wondering what I could say in this situation that wouldn't imply actually caring. Then a little mental shrug. Whatever.

'Guess it isn't so bad to see you either Taylor.'

I had nothing else to say though, so instead I just allowed myself to sink back into thoughts. This time though, they weren't anything to do with Smudge the idiotic cat. Instead they were more about the damned Labyrinth. Still had no idea how long we'd been down there. Time didn't matter much to me anyway, but jeez, it had really sucked down there. You couldn't tell anything, whether it was day, whether it was night, whether an hour or four hours had passed. And even though I wasn't claustrophobic, it had been horribly closed in down there. The thing that really got to me at first though? Certain demigods, not mentioning names- cough taylor & alec cough. I don't work well with others, what can I say? But after a while... well, they both sorta grew on me, I guess. Like mould. Or that thing that grew on the side of ponds, whatever it was called. I didn't count them as friends, ahahahaha that was a ridiculous definition for what I thought of them. But jeez, I didn't hate them? Not that they would ever know that, hahaha no. That wasn't even a possibility. Both were insufferable. Maybe they'd gotten less insufferable during the whole Labyrinth 5 star full experience. Maybe.

It was weirdly relieving though, knowing that Taylor actually hadn't died or you know, been injured. Cause that would have sucked for other people, you know, people who cared. She'd just disappeared, so surely some people would be happy to know she was alive and kicking and all that stuff. Not me though. Nope, definitely not me.

Raising an eyebrow, I couldn't help my own little derisive snort.

    'Speak for your-'

Her very quick step toward me and motion as if to grab my cigarette startled me alright. The memory of her stepping on my cigarette down in the Labyrinth resurfaced all too quickly, and I blinked from the shock and stepped backwards, although there was no need. Her outstretched hand wouldn't have reached it anyway- but she must have known that. Or else she would have stepped that little bit closer. Dammit. Taylor actually had some sense of humor. Enough that I smiled slightly, the smallest upturn of my lips.

'Lung cancer is so overrated. I smoke in moderation, thank you very much. And hell, if I did get it? The world sorta sucks, if you hadn't noticed. Maybe I'm better without the whole world thing,' smoking in moderation, snort. I hadn't smoked in moderation since... well, since the whole thing with him. Damn Zombie Apocalypse. Not something I liked to remember, 'Actually, speaking about being alive, it's more of a surprise for me that you're alive. Where'd you disappear too?'

WORDS?! 720. FOR A SECOND THERE I CONSIDERED APOLOGIZING FOR THE LENGTH CAUSE I THOUGHT YOUR'S WAS LIKE 800 AND SOMETHING BUT LOL I JUST REALIZED I'M LIKE 300 OVER YOURS?

TAYLOR BROOKS
STANDING FROZEN IN THE LIFE I'VE CHOSEN.
The comment about her snorting habits had Taylor rolling her eyes, which actually was another habit she imagined Rana would pick on. These symptoms multiplied whenever the daughter of Eris was around. There was just something about her that Taylor couldn't place - perhaps it was the sarcasm, or the aloof way she held herself, or the words she uttered that made her want to facepalm.

Another memory wandered back to her. All hail the mighty stick.

Taylor bit her lip to prevent the snort that was about to come, and returned to the present where she was being christened with another one of those stupid nicknames. "Not like it would stop you saying it if I said no. Call me whatever - see if I care."

Huh, she might actually start calling me 'whatever' now just for the heck of it...

Taylor sank deeper into her thoughts, studying Rana as she had been studying her. It was still a little disarming to see her aboveground, but she ought to get used to it. Hell, she should be thankful that they were finally out of the damn labyrinth. They all survived, at least. Now they can get on with their petty little lives like the rest of the world.

Taylor couldn't help the guffaw that came out once Rana stepped back, and she could've sworn that the corner of her lips tugged upward in the smallest of smiles.

"Pfft, you? Smoke in moderation? Doubt it."

Back in the labyrinth, she pretty much snatched the thing and stomped the fire out but now... well, it wasn't like they were in a closed area anymore. Rana could smoke all she wanted, not that Taylor approved, but she decided to let the girl go on with her business. It wasn't her life, and Taylor sure as hell wasn't Rana's mother.

The sudden question took her aback though. She didn't expect Rana to ask about her whereabouts in the last month. Hell, she didn't even expect her to realize that she was gone. After the whole labyrinth ordeal they pretty much went back to, well, sort-of-strangers? They simply went on their own ways. Taylor hadn't really talked to either Rana or Alec since the whole thing.

Anyways, now that Rana asked, Taylor found herself pursing her lips as she groped for words. "The outside world, where else?" She pulled on the strap of her bag, hiking it higher on her back for emphasis. As if that wasn't obvious enough. "Can't stay in camp forever. I'm surprised Chiron hasn't kicked me out yet, actually... oh well. Not that I'm complaining." She paused, throwing a rueful look at the snowy landscape. "Besides, I'm not staying long. I have a job and a life to get back to."

Maybe it was obvious in the way she spoke or the way she chose her words, but Taylor had matured. If it was because of the labyrinth or the apocalypse, or even her amnesia - she didn't know. She woke up one morning remembering her old address and it was at that point that she realized, she had to leave camp. In one way or another, she had to face the reality outside.

Not that camp wasn't reality. But Camp Half Blood wasn't a permanent home. It was a place to train for what would come after you finally left. And for Taylor, she knew that it had been her time to leave.

She turned back to Rana. "Well, what did I miss?"

What could I say? I enjoyed christening people with nicknames. Sometimes they were better than peoples actual names. And it was obvious people had problems with them, which made it even better- not to mention, more interesting. Something that was even better though? When they actually gave themselves the nickname. You cannot throw a bone at a dog and expect it to not take it. Likewise with me. You definitely cannot throw a potential nickname at me (Cough Penguin Cough) and expect me to not pick up on it. Jeez, that was just stupidness on your part.

For a moment, I pretended to consider her sentence. "Call me whatever - see if I care". Ahaha, that could be taken two ways. Maybe I should start calling her whatever, just to annoy her. That would be absolutely hilarious (Maybe not for her, but ha, who cares what she finds funny? Taylor seems to have the same sense of humor as... well, a Popsicle.)

'I can think of like a dozen things you would not like to be called, Popsicle,' I smirked a little and continued, 'Be careful what you say around people like me. Ya might just end up with one of those downright rude nicknames some people find amusing.' Some people. Haha. Me.

It was rather... well, odd, really, to be studied by someone like I'd been studying them. I was used to sticking to the shadows (Metaphorically and not so metaphorically), and being that strong, silent (Also amazingly beautiful and desirable) type who actually had opinions on other people before I met them. When people turned around and studied me, like they actually were studying me (If that made sense), it was a weird feeling. Right now, it was enough to make me shift slightly- kinda nervously- on my feet.

Okay. Fine. Maybe she doesn't have the sense of humor of a popsicle. She's still not funny though. Not funny at all.

It was a surprise though, a big one. Not many people would have had the guts to take my cigarette the first time it happened- nevermind squash it on the ground. It had been a shock the first time she did it in the Labyrinth, but at the same time, when I thought about it later (When I'd recovered from my serious smoke inhalation problem), I realized I kinda admired that. Cause no one else would have done it (Scardy cats). Yet she did. And here she went and had a little laugh at my expense, making out she was gonna do it again. I found myself admiring it all over again, not that I'd tell her that.

'Excuse you. I smoke in moderation. Moderation is my middle name- no it's not it's Midnight- but that's not the point, I definitely smoke in moderation, ok?'

I resisted the urge to snort yet again at her words, but I couldn't stop the fact I had words which I needed to say (Early sign of something possibly?).

'Um, where else? You could have been stuck in a hellhounds stomach and no one would ever have known- there's wishful thinking.'

Not really. But she didn't need to know that.

Okay, I couldn't resist the urge for long. It was just way too funny. I snorted, and I raised an eyebrow for good measure, cause her last sentence was just hilarious.

'You have a job? No, no, you have a life? Pinch me, cause I think I'm having a nightmare where you actually became something.'

She turned back and I shrugged, losing the sarcasm for a casual tone.

'Oh, you know, not much has happened. All the Winterfest stuff began- lemme just make it clear that it is all ridiculous and not worth time or effort- and before that, there wasn't that much. Fire lanterns, etc, etc, oh, and you know, that whole zombie thing. I'm sure you'd know bout that though? Weren't you holed up in a safe house during that?' or maybe I have my dates and times and all wrong. That happens.

:/:/OOC: Idk how many words that was or anything sue me I wrote it real quick during I'm a Celeb's ad breaks. Ooh I like Royals tho it's like my fave song right now with let it go

TAYLOR BROOKS
STANDING FROZEN IN THE LIFE I'VE CHOSEN.
Taylor ignored the nickname comment. She didn't care too much about it really. Perhaps the time she spent with Rana in the Labyrinth made her get used to everything Rana-ish. Like the nickname-giving. The snorting. The smoking - well, she tolerated it now, because it was pointless to get her to stop. She just got used to it all. Not that the daughter of Eris grew on her or anything. Pfft.

"Whatever you say, Midnight," she almost sang, even smirking a little, because if there was one thing she was 100% sure about Rana it would be the fact that she did not smoke in moderation. Not now, not ever.

What kind of name is Midnight, anyway? she thought shrewdly. That's like naming a kid Morning... or Noon... Huh, maybe that's what her siblings are called, if she has any...

It was then that she realized that she really didn't know a lot about Rana. The girl was obviously an open book - snort, not. Taylor's knowledge was limited to her experience with said person in the Labyrinth. She didn't have a single clue about her past, if she had any family outside camp, nothing at all.

But then again, I could say the same for myself.

She dismissed the thought quickly, putting it in an airtight jar and locking it in her mind's deepest chambers.

Then she snorted (again), because the next thing she said was just too funny. "Me, stuck in a hellhound's stomach? You wish." The smirk grew a little wider. "Yes, I do have a life, surprise surprise. Maybe you should get one sometime."

Her eyes lit up at the mention of Winterfest, and she almost missed the rest of it. She hoped she missed the rest of it. Ugh, zombies. She cringed. "I was in the Treetop Village, having the time of my life. Not." She hesitated, and continued in the most uncaring and snarkiest tone she could manage, "Glad to see they didn't get you then - well, not that glad, but yeah. The world doesn't need any more Ranas."

She flipped her auburn bangs back and looked off to the landscape. She could see the lake from here, small little dots racing on top of it. Unless people suddenly developed the ability to walk on water, Taylor would bet that it was part of the Winterfest. She made a good decision then, coming back. Imagine spending the holidays inside silent walls, musing to yourself as you sip on hot chocolate. How sad it would have been.

"And I wouldn't call it ridiculous," Taylor said with another eyeroll. "Just goes to show that you lack any sense of fun whatsoever."
