TWISTING THE KALEIDOSCOPE
"Fight it, take the pain, ignite it. Tie a noose around your mind loose enough to breathe fine and tie it to a tree. Tell it, 'You belong to me, this ain't a noose, this is a leash, and I have news for you, you must obey me.' " - Tyler Joseph of Twenty One Pilots

matches just to swallow up the flame

The hum of cicadas rang through the pitch dark night of sweltering Virginia summer. A thin slice of moonlight cast an eerie glow on Calla's chestnut skin. She lay in grey cotton sheets, body still and eyes wide awake. Her dark eyes scanned her room, as if the memorize the detail of it. She was growing anxious, getting just a bit too jittery to try sleeping. Minutes passed before Calla tore the sheets back languidly, hastily slipping out of her pajamas and into more appropriate clothes. Her keys jingled in her palm as she snatched them from her dresser. The door to the old flat clicked behind her as she stepped out into the humid night.

Nights like this made everything seem electric, as if the excitement of it all was airborne. Calla strode coolly over to BMW, swinging her key ring over her nimble fingers. It was an old model, probably a good twenty years old. The raven paint job reflected sinisterly in the midnight gloss. Her BMW was her pride, her favorite possession. Calla cherished this old car with her entire being. Her fingers wrapped around the handle and ripped the door open roughly. Sinking into the familiar leather, she put the key in the ignition and raced out of the parking lot.

With the windows down and the night air whipping her rough curls to resemble a cyclone, Calla felt like a god. A snake of a grin spread across her lips as she pulled up to the oh-so-familiar crossroads at the same time an oh-so-familiar Miata screeched to a halt next to her. She met Ming's eyes, grin growing as Ming's lips stretched wickedly as well. Green light spread over them both as the sped down the deserted streets. Calla quickly took the lead, BMW hollering with the energy of it all. Ming had fallen behind but was catching up all too quickly. She shifted and was at Calla's side in an instant. This was not allowed. Calla shifted also, rushing off with her middle finger stuck into the midnight air. Ming tried to keep up, shifting and shifting until the Miata couldn't take it anymore. Calla cheered victorious, doing donuts in the empty road. She could hear the faint cursing and the chug of the broken down Miata. It left a whirlwind of streaks on the pavement as it came to a painful stop. Ming practically threw herself out of the door, shouting at Calla as she drove away. Calla's laugh echoed through the night, triumphant and full of glory. "See you on the streets!" she shouted back, ripping off back towards her flat.
