Shirley happily scraped a quarter of her pizza to offer it as burnt offering to Hecate. It felt silly praying holding a tray of food, but every demigod managed, including Shirley. The smoke rose, smelling faintly of roses and pepperoni, and Shirley closed her eyes.

'Mother. Summer is about to end. I hope you will give me your blessing to find the man in black.'

Then she opened her eyes, and nostalgia hit her like a freight train. Their meeting with the man in black was so brief, but that was the only time Shirley felt as if she was loved. It seemed silly. Shirley knew that. But as she walked back to the Hecate table, she didn't waver any centimeter. She sat on her bench, followed by her other siblings. Then she began slicing off a portion of her pizza, and nibbled onto it.

The taste was so off Shirley almost barfed. She grabbed her glass of milk and chugged it down. Already feeling down, what with the cloudy weather in camp--of course it never rained--Shirley slumped on her seat and pouted.

Her mind trailed on its usual train of thought. The man in black, the very minute she met him. Shirley remembered the memory as clear as glass. Smiling faintly, yet sadly, the orphan daughter of Hecate twirled a strand of her hair...

"ATTENTION EVERYONE!" the thundering voice of Chiron the centaur said. The buzzing mess hall turned silent, all eyes on front. Shirley stared at him, bored. "Say it," she muttered under her breath. On cue, Chiron started speaking. "So," he grumbled, "In Mr. D's consent--" he pointed at Mr. D, the camp director, who was reading a wine magazine atthe moment "--we obliged every one of you to write your prayers to your parents in one sheet of paper. We will hang it on the Cabin Courtyard for free access."

Dead silence. Shirley's mouth dropped open. What was that he said? Write? Seriously?

Then everyone came back to life and started talking. As for Shirley? She put her head on her arms and moaned. Not that she was afraid of revealing her prayers--it was just, everyone would find it silly. Shirley tried to tell it to someone, yet that someone just laughed at her. What had gone to Mr. D's mind?

Echo Twist- Daughter of Demeter

Echo sat at the Demeter table, twirling her pasta absentmindedly, while her so called siblings laughed and talked and offered food to their mother. But Echo didn't think of Demeter as her mother. Her mother was Cyndi Simmons, and she was miles away from here, in a normal suburban home. But the girl got up anyways and offered part of her dinner to Demeter anyways. It smelt of burnt tomatoes, and Echo's pretty features twisted into those of disgust.

She sat back down and stabbed a meatball continuously. Echo wasn't hungry, she wanted to be out in the strawberry fields, tending to the berries and grapes.

Then Chiron bellowed over the mess hall, calling attention to the campers. It went silent and Echo swore you could hear heads move toward the centaur. When he was finished with his announcement Echo thought she was going to puke. Write letters to your parents? What was she supposed to say? Dear mom and dad, thank you for dropping me off here. Though I haven't made any friends, I know I'l find something I love. Sorry about the house. Love, Echo. Or a letter to Demeter? Dear Demeter, See how I didn't call you mom? You aren't my mom. You never took care of me or even acknowledged that I was there. Thanks for nothing, you're estranged daughter. At any rate, Echo wasn't excited.

She got up and turned to leave, wishing only to go outside and feel the air on her face and climb trees. As Echo passed the Hecate table, she saw a girl with her head in her arms, moaning.

"Hey, are you ok? You seem a little down..." Asked, Echo, stopping beside the girl, If her parents had taught her anything, it was that you should be nice to every living thing, no matter what. Why should the people at this camp be any different.

She was afraid of getting laughed. She was afraid of revealing to anyone else the secret she swore to keep to herself. Shirley doesn't want to obey Chiron. And yet, her mind kicked into gear and started considering the good outcome if she did oblige to Mr. D. Someone might read her note, and somehow might know information about the man in black. In all the years Shirley was searching, she hadn't find a single clue. This might be the chance to have even the smallest hint. Who knows, she might get a traveling partner for the search!

Wishful thinking, she said. It wasn't enough to make her wave on her promise. Everything was muted with her head in her arms, but a voice of a certain girl caught her attention. She lifted her head to look at the person.

She was oddly familiar, with wavy brown hair and a beautiful tan. With a little effort, she managed to remember what cabin she saw the girl--Demeter's cabin. She shook her head. "It's just a little gloomy," she said in defense. With a heavy sigh, Shirley knew she can't downplay play this. "Okay, yeah, a little. What had gotten into Mr. D? Is this some kind of a joke?" Shirley crossed her little arms, and glared at Mr. D's reading figure. Normally, he was not happy, but today, he seemed to be having fun.

"Prayers are supposed to be kept to yourself," Shirley added. "Not displayed into public. This is so inconvenient," she ranted, looking up at the girl. "I mean, do you want to write your prayers down on paper? I don't." She was beginning to sound like a whiny little brat, and so she took a deep breath and stood up. Maybe she was the only one looking down about this--everyone else seemed to be quite happy to pick something they could write from their prayers. She looked at the girl, weighing if she was one of those 'everyone.'

Echo Twist- Daughter of Demeter

The girl seemed to be hiding something when she remarked about the weather. Echo wasn't going to make the girl tell her anything. If you didn't want to talk about a certain subject because it hurt to much, Echo got that. Being in a foster system, you learned things pretty quickly. What to talk about, who to talk to, what conversations to avoid. But the most important rule Echo ever learned was don't make people mad. This was no exception to the people at camp. More than half of the Ares kids could take off her head if she said the wrong thing.

But then the girl opened up and complained about how stupid this whole thing was. and Echo nodded her head, agreeing with the girl.

"Prayers," Scoffed Echo. "They're more like spilling your troubles on paper, hanging them where everyone can laugh at how ridiculous they are, and yet, you know, deep down, that they won't come true. Of course I don't want to write my prayers on paper, no one with a brain would want to! Besides, I don't even know what to write..."

Echo completely agreed with her new found acquaintance. She had no clue why Mr. D wanted the campers to do this. He was probably angry at somebody and decided to punish the whole camp. Or maybe it was a joke. A sick twisted joke that wasn't meant to be taken seriously. But as Echo thought that, she saw many campers whip out pens and paper, scribbling on them like there was no tomorrow. Some campers just went out the door, ignoring the letter writing. Echo wanted to do that, but she didn't want to make any teacher mad, especially Mr. D. Her adoptive brother, Dustin, often made fun of her because she didn't take risks. But Echo just hated getting yelled at, so she followed the rules. Still, her heart told her not to. She didn't want to write the stupid letters that were pointless.

Kamille had just finished writing her prayer on the small slip of paper, slowly inserting the mechanical pencil into her pocket. Nearly everyone had immediately whipped out the proper materials and written theirs, as if they’d known it was going to happen. She glanced around the mess hall, her gaze landing on two girls who had seemed to have done nothing with the assignment. She bounded over, taking her seat on the bench beside them.

“Haven’t you written yours and handed them over yet?” she asked.

Actually, her wish hadn’t been completely honest; how could she let the whole camp know her prayers? They were supposed to be private. If they couldn’t be kept that way, what was the point? Precisely, there wasn’t one.

She sighed, awaiting a response from the two girls.

Echo Twist- Daughter of Demeter

Echo looked at the new girl that was now sitting beside her. She saw a piece of paper in her hand, no doubt her prayer. Echo didn't actually think that anybody with a sliver of common sense would actually do this. She had decided against writing the letter, and for once in her life, Echo felt like a rebel. Sure, this was the first time she'd broken the rules, and it wasn't a very big offence because it was likely to go unnoticed. She felt something like an electric jolt shoot down her spine. Is this what excitement when you've done something wrong feels like? Echo asked herself in her mind, she didn't expect an answer back from herself.

"Why would we? It's completely..." Echo searched for the right word in her wide vocabulary. "Why it's completely idiotic! There isn't any point in it. Did you write yours?" Her deep chocolate brown eyes looked at the paper in her hand. "Don't answer that... No, I'm not writing mine. Demeter and I aren't exactly close. And my parents back at home, well, if we're hanging them in the courtyard, they'd never get the letter, so whats the point? Mr. D just makes us do this stuff because he knows he can."

Echo wished more than anything to send an actual letter to her parents, but not tonight. She missed them deeply and if she truly needed to get a hold of her adoptive parents, she could always call them on the cell phone that she had. Echo just didn't want to bother them with her homesickness. She hated being annoying and she hated not following the rules. But this time... it actually felt good to break them, like she was now free from being in a cage. Now, Echo could fly. Fly back to her home.

Shirley nodded enthusiastically, and snapped her fingers. "That's what I'm talking about!" She grinned, completely up from her down mood a while ago. Finding someone who agrees with you on a topic really helped to boost morale. Especially on this matter. But when the girl said something about prayers not coming through, Shirley smiled uncomfortably and said playfully, "You've got to have some faith in the Olympians." Glancing at the reading Mr. D, Shirley leaned in closer and whispered, "You're going to ditch? Let me come with you, please?"

"Oh, by the way, I'm Shirley. Nice meeting you."

Ditching sounds good. Looking around, she saw other demigods doing it. It's okay to break rules sometimes, right? Grinning, Shirley started her way towards the exit of the Mess Hall. She looked back, wondering if the girl would come with her.

But before Shirley can even take a step, another girl came, and asked them. Shirley's face puckered, but she politely concealed with with a light smile. "I'm not doing it," she said honestly. As her other companion said her disagreement to the other girl's question, Shirley nodded in agreement. "I can't agree more." Shirley's eyes went down to the girl's paper, and knew the girl had written her prayer. Sooner or later, it'll be hung in the courtyard for everyone to see. Shirley felt bad for the girl.

Shirley's heart fluttered delicately. Well, this is a first. Her first time to break the rules. But thinking of the outcome, her decision would not be wavered by anything, or anyone else, even a god. She wouldn't post her prayers for everyone else to see, and for it to be laughed at. Shirley crossed her arms, waiting for the girl's response. Their hostility might have offended the girl, and Shirley waited for her possible rebuff.

Kamille looked at the slip of paper in her hand and shifted a bit.

“Yeah, I wrote it,” she muttered. “I wasn’t completely honest. This wasn’t my actual prayer. I just changed it a bit; not into something I wouldn’t take, though. This is pointless, anyway. The last thing I want is for Mr. D to read what I really think.”

She shook her head, stuffing the paper in her pocket. It’s not like she’d have thought her mother would actually do anything anyway. They’d never spoken, not in the years she’d been at camp. All her prayers before every meal always went to waste. Her many attempts to contact the goddess of love and beauty all proved inconsequential.

“So, you guys are ditching, presumably? I'm Kamille. Mind if I come with? Better not to give Mr. D what he wants,” she winked.

Echo Twist- Daughter of Demeter

Echo smiled, glad that she had found people that had agreed with her on this matter. She made the girl named Shirley happy, and that was Echo's goal in the first place. She liked helping people and making them feel like they deserved a second chance in life. The only person she had failed at was Dustin, but she knew from the start that he was a lost cause.

"I'm Echo," She said, introducing herself. "Echo Twist. I'll ditch, but it's my first time, so I might not be the best. Kamille, if you want, you can join Shirley and I. I don't know what we're going to do, exactly, but it won't be writing letters. Maybe we could go down to the bonfire and throw stuff into it?" She said, her mind traveling back to the suburban home she had lived in before the monster had destroyed it. Echo and her adoptive parents, Cyndi and Mark, would write down angry letters about other people and throw them into a bonfire, letting their emotions of anger and sorrow and frustration go with the ashes in the wind. It was a great way for Echo to get her feelings out without talking and troubling other people.

Then she had an idea. "Hey, what if we write the letters, but we burn them? That way, we won't give Mr. D what he wants, but we can write down our anger or whatever feelings you may have about anybody."

There was one other thing Echo wanted to burn if they went to the bonfire. It was her camp T-shirt, the one that she never wore, despite everyone calling her off for it. But this wasn't her home. So why should she support it? She'd never tell Shirley or Kamille about this secret of hers, she wouldn't want them yelling at her that that would offend the gods or something. Seems like, Echo thought, that the gods get angry over nothing.

“Sounds good,” Kamille smiled brightly. “It’s brilliant.”

She could trash the fake note she had planned on giving Mr. D, and write a new one; one with her actual feelings, her actual complaints. The chance of her mother reading or hearing anything she said was slim, so why bother with the praying? Echo’s was a brilliant idea, nonetheless. To burn all your feelings, to relieve them from yourself, to stop them from eating you alive… it was a beautiful thing. She was more excited for this than she ever had been.

Ditching the mess hall, Chiron, and Mr. D was a big rebellious action, more rebellious than the recent event of her dying her blonde hair blue in order to be different than her bleak brothers and sisters.

“Shall we, then?” she asked, standing from her spot on the bench.

Shirley's face brightened a bit more. Echo's thinking is great--it fits the bill right now. Besides, Shirley had already prayed to her mother about her real prayer, and she was glad she had a choice other than complying to the wine god's orders.

"I'm coming," Shirley announced, low enough for Kamille and Echo to hear, but not others. "This is also my first time. Let's go burn our hatred towards the Olympians." Grinning, Shirley tucked her hands in her pockets, and jerked her thumbs towards the exit of the mess hall. As Kamille stood up, Shirley walked alongside her after she glanced at Echo and flashed an encouraging smile. Echo looked nervous, and so Shirley. It was fun doing new things, though, and Shirley was definitely up for this.

Trying not to look suspicious, Shirley looked around innocently as she made her way out of the mess hall, hopefully with Kamille and Echo following behind. Figuring out they caught a lot of attention, Shirley tried to make up for it by starting a conversation. Hopefully a conversation that sounded normal to others. Her heart thundered. Only now did she realized how dangerous ditching was.

"So, Kamille and Echo," she started with forced enthusiasm to mask her nervousness. "Which cabin do you reside? I haven't seen you two... uh, near Hecate cabin, I mean. Because I'm a daughter of Hecate." They probably noticed on her seat on the mess hall, but still, Shirley thought it was proper to say it formally. Friendship starts with honesty, they say. Somebody said that, Shirley believed.

The trio had snuck surprisingly easily from the Mess Hall, though she was sure they had caught the eyes of a few curious campers. Nonetheless, they were moderately free, heading towards the bonfire. 

“My mom is Aphrodite,” she answered Shirley. 
 
Once she looked back again, she was certain nobody from the Mess Hall could see them. She hoped nobody had plans of following them to their destination.
 
“Should we stop off at our cabins? To get things we want to burn?” she inquired.  

A complete list of things she wished to burn and never again see ran through her mind. If the memories that went along with those futile few objects would burn as well, that would be absolutely splendid. Immediately, she disregarded the simple thought. Of course that wouldn’t happen, and she felt stupid just thinking about it. Kamille sighed and continued along the way with her newfound acquaintances.

Echo Twist- Daughter of Demeter

Echo left with Kamille and Shirley, walking outside into the cool crisp night air. She looked back once more and looked with deep sad brown eyes at the campers who had obliged to write what Mr. D wanted.

"I'm a daughter of Demeter, but I don't feel like I'm her daughter, I have a mom that is back in a suburban home, finishing the house that I didn't mean to wreak. My dad is probably cooking his barbecue ribs..." Said Echo, looking at the ground. She felt a pang of homesickness in her stomach. She wondered if Shirley or Kamille felt it too. Nighttime had fallen upon the three campers quickly. The only source of light torches and the silver stars above them.

Shirley had said something about the Olympian gods and goddess, about burning their hatred of them. Echo couldn't agree more, but a gut feeling told her that Shirley was most likely just kidding about that. Echo didn't like being a half-blood. The only perks were making friends like Shirley and Kamille.

"Yeah, I think we should go to our cabins, Kamille. I'll grab my stuff, and you guys grab yours, then we'll meet at the campfire and burn stuff." Echo said, already planning what she would bring: Pens and paper, but her camp T-shirt and her beaded necklace. She didn't like anything here- besides the people beside her- so why should she support the camp?

(Oh gods, that sucks D:)

Kamille walked toward her cabin at a steady pace, seriously contemplating what she was to bring. She scanned her bags, and the bathroom case she always kept hidden in a drawer. Immediately after, she lifted a small purple perfume bottle her father had gotten her when she first moved into camp all those years ago. The two were no longer on speaking terms; the previous year, they had gotten into a fight about the Camp. He demanded she not go, but Kamille held her ground and refused to allow him to tear this small piece of life she had. Though there were bullies, and many people who picked on her, Kami was more than glad to call this place a home; a family. She knew her siblings actually cared for her, even if just a small bit. And she was glad for that.
 
“Burn the past, make room for the future,” she muttered to herself, shoving the bottle into an empty small, blue package she managed to snip from another Aphrodite camper. 
 
She also threw in a few other things here and there. She was more than glad to be rid of the glue-filled soap bottles the Hermes campers had planted on her cabin only a short time back. Soon, she was bounding back to her friends, whom were waiting patiently outside the U of cabins.
 
“Everyone ready?” she asked, a pained smile of nostalgia on her face.

Demeter and Aphrodite? That was unexpected. Shirley stared at the two, hoping to get a resemblance in them from their mothers. That should have been wrong, though. Not all Olympian parents leave a mark on their children just to drill in their minds that they were demigod, god of a certain Olympian god. Shirley dismissed the thought, and just nodded.

Unlike Echo, Shirley didn't feel that much of a regret being an Olympian goddess's child. In fact, she was grateful. Growing up as an orphan is a depressing thing, and knowing you had a parent, even the one who does not see you is great. It made her feel wanted. But she won't pry against other's point of view. "You can go back," Shirley suggested out of the blue. "Once you've reached eighteen, you can go back. Until then, I think you should bear with the camp a little longer and make friends."

And just like that, they were out in the mess hall. Nodding once more to Kamille' suggestions. Before she raced to her cabin, Shirley waved goodbye, shouting, "Be right back." Then she picked up speed, and in less than two minutes back at Cabin 15. Flashing smiles and greetings and answering a few questions, finally, Shirley was able to get in her bunk.

Huh. What should she burn? Echo and Kamille--no, she said herself she will burn her hatred for Hecate. But what should she burn? Frowning deeply, a dozen thoughts passed her mind. Then she saw the vial. Not just one vial, but vials.

Anger fumed inside Shirley. The vials. Yes, the vials that contained the poison that monsters wanted. Another evil son of Hecate, probably from Kronos' army, gave it to her saying it was a gift from Hecate. Because of that, Shirley was chased by monsters even though she was only a minor demigod. That's it, she thought. She snatched a paper bag, and put all the vials inside. With a grim smile, she dashed outside, and immediately saw her friends waiting.

"Yes, ready," Shirley said once she stopped running. She held up the paper bag that contain all belongings she wished to burn. "These were vials containing poison that attracted a lot of monsters. I think Hecate purposely gave it to me through one of my thwarted siblings." Sneering, Shirley held the paper bag away from her as far as she could.

Echo Twist- Daughter of Demeter

Echo raced to her cabin, and shut the door behind her. She walked to her bedside table and went through the drawers. There were many knickknacks and things that she had collected. An acorn here, a leaf there. Hidden in the shadows was her mickey mouse hat from when she went to Disney world with her parents. They had to pay extra money just to get her name etched on there because 'Echo' was such an uncommon name. She wondered if Cyndi or Demeter had named her.

She thought of what Shirley had said, about leaving when she was eighteen. Did she really want to? Echo shook her head. Of course she did, there was no question about it. But was it the best thing for her or her parents? No, probably not. If her parents wished it, Echo would stay to keep them safe.

She pulled on a tan jacket with fake fur on the hood over her green shirt. The jacket had pockets, making easy storage for the things she wanted to burn. She stuffed them with pens and paper. She looked in the drawers one more time and grabbed her necklace. The bead was brown with a green tuft of grass on it, signaling her mother was Demeter. Yes, she wanted to burn it, she felt like she was being branded like cattle. Echo, of course, realized she was overreacting with the whole demi-god thing. It wasn't so bad, you got some perks. Maybe Echo was just mad at Demeter for not keeping in contact with her.

She grabbed some sweetgrass and her camp t-shirt and headed out the door, saying goodbye to her siblings. She saw the others waiting for, their stuff already with them.

"I'm more than ready. Last one to the campfire's a rotten egg!" Shouted Echo, sprinting away from the girls and leaving a trail of dust in her wake.
