Adam Charles Lewins

Normally Adam would have kept to himself and stayed in his cabin and napped for a few hours, but today he decided to venture out in the world and take a gander. He hadn't been outside in... eight days? Yeah, it had been eights since he'd seen the sun and he was feeling weak, so his cabin leader sent him outside. More like threw him out into the cold and told him to go do something. Meet some girls, have a picnic, roll in the snow, eat the snow for hell's sake. Just do something. Adam had merely just frowned at his cabin leader and wandered off into the snowstorm to the library, another one of his havens. It was true, Adam had safe havens all over camp. They were all public but they were places that usually no one ever visited. Like the library. It had been establish recently, but hardly anybody was there, which was exactly how he liked it. Adam had wandered into the library, given the Harpy librarian a smile and went for the classics section. Despite never having going to school and learning from anyone, Adam was naturally good at reading and storing information in his brain.

Now he was curled up by the winter fireplace, watching the flames dance around in front of him kind of wishing he was nestled up in a ball inside of those flames. Not to burn or anything, just to be warm. Adam always felt like he was cold. He figured it was just a Morpheus thing, though. Adam glanced back down at the book in his hands, regarding with a slight feeling of annoyance. He didn't feel like reading anymore. He felt almost like taking a nap again. Adam gently closed the book, keeping one finger on the spine--for fear of the spine cracking anymore--and he set it on the side table next to him. For a moment, Adam just sat there in the huge, leather chair and pondered his life choices, feeling majestic and philosophical and then he let out an amused snort. He was Adam; he was about as majestic as a dying sea lion. Becoming quiet again, Adam twisted his body in his chair and rested his feet out in front of him, attempting to dry off his shoes. It had been a long walk to the library from his cabin.

Within twenty minutes of his attempted nap, Adam was already moving around in his chair, squirming if you will. He just couldn't get comfortable. Frustrated, he slid around even more and before he knew it, he was rolling around on the floor confused as all hell.

Nicole's hand moved flawlessly across her notebook and left a trail of words behind. As minutes ticked by, she kept glancing at the centuries-old encyclopedia that had made her sneeze a couple of times now. The thing looked like it would fall apart at any time but Nicole had to grit her teeth and bear it because she had to learn which Greek monsters were poisonous and which were relatively harmless. It did irk her a bit, how she needed to spend some time studying while the other campers had the time of their lives outside in the winter festivities. But then, she'd rather be here than her own cabin, as some of her siblings had taken to pushing her around while describing her as a 'docile' child of Ares.

Still, Nicole was glad that even the library had attained that Christmassy feel. Reaching for a gingerbread cookie, she twirled the pen around her fingers and continued reading. Lamia, a vampiric demon which preyed on children. Her eyebrows knotted as she chewed. What a depressing thing to read during the holidays. Casting that thought aside, Nicole had just gotten to the part where Zeus removed her eyesight when a muted thud broke the otherwise silent atmosphere of the library.

Surprised, Nicole looked up only to see a boy squirming on the floor by the fireplace. Before long, she found herself leaning over him, an arm stretched out to help him up. "Hey, you okay?"

Also surprised, Adam glanced up into the face of a girl with dark hair. His eyes were round in confusion as he took her hand, hauling himself to his feet. "I'm fine, thank you," Adam replied quietly. He was never very good at accepting help. Adam brushed the dirt and dust off his shirt and gave a small smile to the girl who helped him up. The smile held no warmth, but it was the best he had to offer. "I'm Adam," he found himself introducing himself, as if he weren't controlling his actions. He felt like he was having an out of body experience. He was watching himself reach out to shake hands with a perfect stranger.
Adam stretched his hand out to shake hers. Hopefully she'd oblige and he wouldn't be standing there like an idiot with his hand hanging out. While he stood there, his gaze danced over her face, studying her features like she was an art exhibit. A very pretty art exhibit, the thought struck him like a brick. Adam had just met the girl. He wasn't up for anything of the kind of things he was thinking about now. As a normal teenager, he knew it was perfectly normal to think that girls were pretty. Or even beautiful, but being stuck in his early twentieth century mindset, he tore his gaze away, a thin pink blush spreading across his pale face.

There was something odd about the boy. His smile, for instance, seemed almost... empty. Although a little troubled, Nicole managed a smile back all the same. "I'm Nicole. Nice to meet you," she said, shaking his hand once before quickly letting go. Gods forbid that her fingers still had some leftover crumbs from that gingerbread cookie. The last thing she wanted to make was an awful first impression on the unfamiliar but rather good-looking boy.

Keeping that small fear in mind, she stilled when Adam looked away quickly with his cheeks a very light shade of pink. Did she have something on her face? More gingerbread crumbs, perhaps? Wait, was he checking her out? Nicole immediately brushed the thought off. Staring doesn't mean checking out, she told herself. Well, maybe sometimes, but you have to stop assuming these kinds of things.

Feeling a little too self-conscious, Nicole pasted a smile back on her face and willed her fingers to stop their mindless fidgeting. "I haven't seen you around before. Are you new?"

Eh, small talk. Nicole wasn't that good at it. But it was better than silence.

Shly, Adam shook the girl's hand. "I'm Adam, it's good to meet you, too," he replied anxiously. Although she was brand new to him and he was brand new to her, he still had trouble making a first impression. Adam had trouble with this for everyone, so it wasn't like it was something totally new and foreign to him. Adam gave her a brief smile again and looked down at his thumbs. Now what? He didn't even know what to do. Adam looked around, his bright blue gaze flickering back to his chair. He plopped down in it and glanced back up at the girl who had introduced herself as Nicole.
"Are you new?" She asked giving him a warm smile. Adam replied in that same quiet tone, "Yes, I've been here for a few months now."

Nicole honestly didn't know if Adam preferred to be alone. Was just too nice to ask her to leave? But he just looked so... sad. As if he wasn't used to human contact. As if he had just been relearning how to interact again after a long time. Gods, Nicole, she thought to herself, stop overthinking things. Adam was probably just nervous. Nicole certainly was.

Her fingers crept up to fidget with her necklace. The charm was a silver locket of some sort, a family heirloom she'd heard, passed down through generations. She couldn't even remember when her grandmother gave it to her. The old lady had loved it so much that to this day, Nicole couldn't understand why she had let it go. Not that she was complaining of course. It had become the only thing that reminded her of her past. That there had once been a point when she didn't treat her family members the same way she did her mother.

Snapping out of her thoughts, it took Nicole a few seconds to realize that Adam had spoken. She was still playing with the necklace - a nervous habit she had picked up over the years - when she replied, "Oh, me too. The mythology thing took a while to get used to though." A short pause. "Do you know who your godly parent is?"

ooc;; my layout inclines me to write more than i need to so no.

Watching Nicole as she stood around awkwardly fidgeting with her necklace, Adam gestured to the old, leather incliner next to him. Although it was worn with age and the leather was begining to crack, it looked rather comfortable. "Sit down," he stated attempting to give her a warm look. It's not that he didn't know how, he just felt like he was incapable after being put through so much in his eighteen years of life. Even though it had almost been ninety years ago, Adam had spent his last Christmas in battle.

Watching her fidget with her necklace brought Adam to assume it was a nervous habit--just like his nail biting. Soon enough, he found himself chewing on his stubby nails. Gods, the two of them together were just a complete nervous pair. Adam thought this to himself with a slight smile, although he hid this from Nicole to avoid getting asked anymore questions than she was already asking. Not that he minded the questions. He just didn't like talking. Adam preferred a quiet afternoon alone with a good book or movie.

"My god parent?" He repeated to himself more than to her. "Oh, Morpheus. What about you?"

Nicole released a breath she didn't realize she was holding. At least now she was sure that Adam wasn't just being too polite to make her leave. "Thanks," Nicole said, plopping down on the incliner. It was more comfortable than it looked, thankfully. Settling in her seat, she crossed her legs and tried not to think about the old encyclopedia she had been reading. This was much more enjoyable than studying monsters that were too scary and depressing to read about.

From the way Adam bit his nails, Nicole confirmed that he was really just nervous. What a pair they made. Had the Fates thought how interesting it would be to throw the two shyest people in camp in the same room together?

Dragging out the time she had before answering his question, she pretended to inspect the seams of her locket charm. "Ares," she replied quietly, a little ashamed of her lineage. Children of the war god usually didn't come with a good rep. Would Adam judge her for that? Hastily fumbling for a change of topic, Nicole continued, "So... Morpheus, god of dreams. Guess that means you can control dreams, huh?"

Without thinking, Adam replied, "You're too pretty to be a child of Ares." He hadn't even thought about it. It just came out. Adam's face reddened in the soft, dim library light. He opened his mouth to take back hide statement, but something inclined him to just leave it hanging in the air. Maybe she'd ignore? Who knew? All Adam knew was that he had either just scared her away for good, creeped her out, or flattered her. He hoped for the latter.

Adam's bright blue gaze flickered to the dying fire in the fireplace and he almost got up to their more logs onto the flames, but he figured that could wait a while. Just sitting there in the silence was a lot nicer than he thought it would be, especially with a stranger next to him. Adam snuck a glance at get when he thought she wasn't looking. Her dark brown hair was definitely a feature from her father, as he'd only seen brunettes sired from the god of war. She had darkdark, green eyes, but the way the fire light was hitting her, they looked almost golden in spots.

Adam turned his gaze away, fearful he'd been staring. A few more seconds ticked by before Nicole spoke again, this time asking him about his powers. "Yes, I have the slight ability to control dreams." The word slight was an understatement. Not only could he control them, but he could tap into others' minds, build dreams, and practically live in his subconscious if he so chose to.

Within a split-second, Nicole turned as red as the boy who had just spoken. Did she just hear it right? Had Adam actually complimented her on her looks? She opened her mouth but no sound came out. This happened a fair few times and soon she shrank back in the incliner, nervously playing with the ends of her shirt. She twirled her fingers around the loose threads, eyes darting towards the floor before flickering back towards him.

"Thanks," she said softly, giving him a small smile. She couldn't put it in words how much she appreciated his gesture, but maybe a smile, albeit a shy one, would suffice. Actions speak louder than words, right?

Nicole drew in a deep breath, only vaguely aware of the silence only punctuated by the occasional crackling flames in the fireplace. Barely realizing how her fingers continued their mindless fidgeting, she stole glances at the son of Morpheus and wondered if she should say something nice about his blond hair, how it seemed to shine under the dimming light. How his eyes were seemingly undecided on what color they should appear. How the dying fire highlighted the golden flecks in his ocean eyes - something one wouldn't notice if they weren't looking close enough. But then, Nicole feared having to sound stupid, and the two of them were flustered enough as it was. They appeared to be, anyway.

Luckily, she was saved from having to speak her thoughts when Adam revealed his ability. She smiled in spite of herself. It wasn't hard to miss the fleeting humility in his voice. "Seems like a great power," she said, slowly growing back whatever bits of confidence she had left. "Is it like - um, what do you call that? Oh - lucid dreaming? But instead of doing it on yourself, you can do it on others and wow, that's amazing. Contolling dreams. It sounds like it can help a lot of people." A dreamy look crossed her face but it only lasted for a few seconds until her smile faded. "A lot of campers have problems with nightmares, after all."

adam charles lewins

Staring at the fire for a while, Adam kept his comments to himself. He couldn't really think of much to say without coming off as a braggart or someone who was ashamed of his powers. He was neither. Adam was more indifferent to his powers than anything. His powers had never bothered him and had never done anything to harm anyone--yet--so he was very indifferent to them. He found them to be very tricky, and confusing, personally, but he didn't want to go around bragging about them so he let out a simple, "Thank you."
The son of Morpheus folded his hands neatly in his lap and cleared his throat, about to attempt to prod some information out of the girl who identified as Nicole. "Any particular topics that you're interested in reading about?" It was a simple start for Adam, but better than most. You see, Adam wasn't particularly good at speaking to other people and when he did it wasn't most people that he spoke to. When Adam spoke, he spoke in short, clipped sentences that made people either think he was arrogant and condescending or just shy. Truth was, Adam was just socially awkward and a little broken.
He was genuinely curious in the type of literature that Nicole was interested in, though. If there was one thing that Adam loved and that hadn't changed from back in his original time, it was literature. Sure, the writing styles had changed and new ideas had developed, but there was nothing on Earth like the feeling of holding a book in your hands and smell the new paper, and touching the newly bound, leather spine. Nothing in the world. Adam couldn't even imagine what life would be like had the invention of a book been replaced with some other modern marvel.
Lost in his thoughts and shaking them away, Adam turned his bright, turquoise gaze back to Nicole and gave her the slightest smile.

Nicole's eyes lit up at the mention of reading. "Oh I enjoy a lot of novels. Nicholas Sparks is one of my favorite authors. And my... mom... wrote a lot in her free time." She took in a deep breath before continuing. "Thrillers are also great. John Grisham's works, especially. Sci-fi and fantasy make for amazing reads too..."

Nicole stopped herself before she could ramble on about all the authors she could name off the top of her head, settling instead for a heavy sigh. "It's just so timeless, literature. Goes to show how much people love to tell stories. My nana used to read me to bed a few years back," she said, eyes turning a little glassy at the recollection. When was the last time she visited her grandmother? It was so long ago that she couldn't even remember and she felt a small pang of sadness. She missed her terribly. Nicole suddenly found herself speaking once more at the memory of the old woman's smiling face. "She wouldn't read me those normal kiddie stories though. She would tell me how her life was back in her own time. She lived during the Great War, you know? And you wouldn't believe how many times she would tell me about her brother. How brave he was for going off to war, things like that..."

She caught herself before she could continue. "Wow, sorry for that. Got a little carried away." Nicole offered him a warm apologetic smile. "How 'bout you? What do you like to read?"

Adam Charles Lewins

Adam took in Nicole's speech, listening intently and letting each word linger in his brain like the last drops of a dry wine. She was very lively when she spoke about literature and it made it very clear to Adam that she was passionate about books and lit. The boy sat back in his chair and gazed at the fire, still listening, but taking his eyes off of her. Afterall, he didn't want to seem creepy. You see, Adam was developing a bit of an affection for Nicole already and he really didn't want to scare her away with his creepiness.

At the mention of the words 'great' and 'war' in the same sentence and strung together, Adam's head perked forward, indicating that he was now fully listening and grabbing on to every word. She had a grandmother whose brother went into the Great War? A brother... with a sister. That sounded a lot like his old situation. He'd never actually met his sister after the Casino fiasco. He'd figured that all his family was dead and gone and he was the last of the Lewins clan. "Forget what I like to read," Adam said, with a certain twinkle in his eyes. "Did your nana ever tell you what her brother's name was?"

Well, of course he was interested in Nicole's grandmother's brother. There was a possibility that they could've served together. Possibly even been on the front line together. The latter was a long shot, but it was still a possibility.

xNicole placed two fingers under her chin in deep thought. It slightly took her aback how he seemed interested in this but she paid it no heed, dwelling instead on his question. What was the name of her grandma's brother again? To be honest, there had been some times when she dozed off in the middle of Nana's stories, but she was pretty sure that the name got mentioned more than once. Well, actually, it got mentioned a lot. Nana was just that passionate about her brother. Once, Nicole had even suspected that she still missed him, shedding tears when no one would see.

But enough about that. Nicole had to remember the name. "Um... I think it started with a C. Something like... Callum? Wait no. Caine? Ah, Charles! That's it!" She beamed. "Charles. Nana liked calling him Charlie."

Then she tilted her head to the side. "Why do you want to know?"

Adam Charles Lewins

With this new information swimming around in his brain like little tadpoles, Adam sat back in his chair with a studious expression on his face. Lucy used to call him Charlie and so did his mother. In fact, Adam always just went by Charlie back in the day. It was only when he'd come to camp that he started going by his first name. Adam's gaze flickered over to Nicole's face for a moment, drinking her facial features in slowly. Was it possible that this was Lucy's granddaughter? Nicole didn't look anything like Lucy or anyone in his family at all. Then again, it was possible that she was just her father's daughter. Ares did have dominant traits in his blood.

Adam dropped his gaze to the floor and spoke softly, "I like to read old literature. Farewell to Arms, The Great Gatsby, The Beautiful and The Damned, The Sun Also Rises. You know, stuff like that." Adam did love the Lost Generation Writers, but he enjoyed newer fiction, too. "My favorite book is The Grapes of Wrath, though," he admitted.

But, what Adam kept to himself was that he read to learn about the ninety years he'd missed while living in that wretched Casino. He'd missed out on so much and now all he could do was read books about it. He'd missed out on so many wars and so many great presidents, and so many events and so many paranoid presidents. Not only had Adam missed American history, but he'd missed the greatest time period of the world in general. And he was a little upsetted by that.

xNicole watched Adam for a few moments, not missing how his expression suddenly shifted to serious. Was it something she said? The way he looked at her also made her squirm a little in her seat. It was not stern, his gaze, more like inquisitive. As if he was drinking in her features like a thirsty man. The thought brought a slight tinge of pink in the girl's cheeks along with a quick dash of insecurity.

Shrugging the feeling off, Nicole listened to him and frowned. He had not answered her question. She shrugged that off too. Probably not a big deal, right?

Anyway, she recognized the titles he mentioned. Farewell to Arms, The Beautiful and the Damned... written around the 1920s if she remembered right. Well, there was no doubt Adam was talking about really old literature, the kind they made you read in school. "The Great Gatsby, we did a report on that back in school," she said, nodding. "I failed that one because my dog Max pooped on my homework the night before I was going to hand it in."

Smiling, she continued, "The Grapes of Wrath? What's it about?"

Adam Charles Lewins

A smile crossed Adam's lips and he folded his hands in his lap ever so neatly. The boy took a breath in, relishing the calmness and the easiness in the air all of a sudden. The atmosphere had taken what felt like a dramatic turn from heavy to light and conversational. Not that the previous moments hadn't been conversational, but this new question was a lot easier for Adam to talk about. He enjoyed literature a lot. "Well, The Grapes of Wrath is about the Great Depression in America, shortly after the time period that I grew up in, as a matter of fact." Adam's fingers traced the line of his jaw as he spoke.

"To keep you from falling asleep in your chair, the book is just about The Joads and how they move from Oklahoma to California, in search of a better life. You see, in the Great Depression, tenant farmers like the Joads usually were uprooted from their entire lifestyle in the Great Plains because of the Dust Bowl that went along with the Depression. The Dust Bowl prevented the famers from farming, and as a result most farmers went broke and had to look for work elsewhere. It's a bit of a sad novel, but I like John Steinbeck's writing. It's realistic and it keeps me in touch with American history." His blue eyes sparkled in the dim firelight; it was clear that he loved literature and loved speaking about it.

Adam couldn't put his finger on it, but as he gazed at the floor, he realized just how easy it was to talk to Nicole. He didn't usually speak to the other campers out of a slight fear, but mostly because he didn't know how. With Nicole, it was totally different. He just felt like they'd been friends for ages and that he already knew her.
